Wednesday Special Spotlight Annie Stiles A Match Made in Heritage View
Shines on
A Match Made in Heritage View, Heritage View Series, Book 1
By
Annie Stiles
BLURB:
Despite having been raised by a man-eating, social-climbing mother, Genevieve Garnier is a hopeless romantic. She has successfully parlayed her sentimental nature into a prestigious Manhattan wedding planning business, but cannot make it down the aisle herself.
As another hectic wedding season winds down, Gen finds herself burned out and at a crossroads in life. She retreats to the charming Hudson Valley town of Heritage View to reinvent herself as girl-next-door “Jane”, complete with a charming cottage and apple pies baking in the oven. Gen is determined to simplify her life in Heritage View and keep her wedding business humming, without letting the two worlds collide. Michael Carlisle waltzes in and turns her plans upside down.
Michael is smart and successful, with enough guarded-heart intensity and magnetism to curl any woman’s toes. He stays out of the social fray in Manhattan, so he doesn’t recognize Jane as socialite wedding planner Genevieve. It’s a good thing, because he hates pampered socialites and avoids them nearly as much as he avoids girl-next-door types. That leaves our heroine 0-for-2. To make matters worse, it turns out that Michael is dear friends with the Hunter family, “Jane’s” new best friends. He has relationship baggage of his own to battle, but Michael can’t seem to stay away from Jane.
Will they repeat the mistakes of the past?
EXCERPT:
“The way you’re wielding that wooden spoon, I can see that I’ve startled you.” He held his hands up in mock surrender, the twinkle in his eyes making way for a smile that completely spoiled his attempt at appearing contrite. “I mean no harm. You have no cause to spoon me to death.” He was teasing her openly now, and Jane stifled the unwelcome romantic image that he’d just unwittingly conjured.
“Oh, I’m so sorry.” With a nervous chuckle, she lowered the spoon she was still unconsciously grasping. “Force of habit, I’m afraid. I’m from the city.” Why had she told him that? Wasn’t incognito her goal? Clearly, the FBI wouldn’t be soliciting her for undercover work anytime soon. She smoothed her disheveled apron moaning internally at the cheesy move in light of his obvious sophistication. Buck up, camper, you are acting like a freshman in high school.
“Ah, yes. I should have recognized the paranoia and aggression. Comes with the territory, huh? Whereabouts?”
At her blank expression, he prompted, “Where are you from?”
“Where? Err, New York.” So much for witty repartee. Good grief. Really, Gen?
His smile was openly curious and more than a hint amused, the effect so potent as to be more than a bit butterfly inducing. Her brain sounded an alarm of recognition. Her heart began to sink. Not particularly original, but clichéd or not, butterflies in her stomach were her own early-warning system. Butterflies in the stomach were not technologically advanced and rather akin to plucking petals from a daisy in sophistication but nevertheless, flawlessly accurate at predicting trouble of the masculine variety. Did women still swoon nowadays? Swooning was like fainting, right? She’d have to remember to look it up. Gen had read about swooning women a million times, but this was the first time in her life she had understood the impulse.
“Yeah, the city.” He winked at her. “I think we’ve established that.”
“I—”
“Let’s start over.” He moved forward a step and held out his hand to her. “Hi, Jane. I’m Michael.”

Playing Favorites – Author Confessions
by
Sara Daniel
With the reminder that every child is different, parents are often admonished not to play favorites. The same advice can often be applied to an author’s books. Each book is different and develops in a slightly different way. Sure, because they’re part of the same family (i.e. written by the same author), they share certain characteristics. But no matter how equally the author approaches them, they each turn out a little bit differently.
There’s the book that’s so fun and interesting that you’re sucked into the world and the characters. Before you know it, you’re writing a series.
There’s the book where you think you’re doing everything right, but nothing’s working out until you chuck the original premise (and the hero!) and start over.
Then comes the book where you feel like you finally got it right and you know what you’re doing, but you had to work hard to get there.
Oh, and surprise! You’re having twins…er, I mean, another book!
Then comes the book that starts out solid, then has a major teenage rebellion, then settles down and becomes a good, upstanding adult.
If you haven’t already guessed, I just described the first five books in the One Night with the Bridal Party series: One Night with the Bride, One Night with the Bridesmaid, One Night with the Groom, One Night with the Best Man, and One Night with her Husband, respectively.
The sixth and final book, One Night with his Wife, is my pride and joy. No matter how much I’m not supposed to have a favorite, I’m having a hard time being impartial. This is my “miracle baby,” the story that came out exactly right the first time with characters who took on a life of their own and lodged themselves—and their emotional journey—in my heart.
I hope you enjoy Luke and Rosalind’s story as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you’ve been with me from the beginning, I’d love to hear which book is your favorite. If this is your first book in the series, welcome! The books can be read in any order, and you’ll find special appearances by familiar characters along the way.
After a grenade took Marine Luke Cox’s leg and ends his career, he cuts ties with his wife to free her from the burden he’d become. On the day his divorce is to be finalized, he travels to meet a woman for a 1 Night Stand date—a woman who doesn’t care about his missing leg or his sudden wealth from a business venture. However, things don’t go as planned, and when he arrives for his date, he’s still legally married.
Rosalind Cox tends to the horses on her cousin’s ranch resort, her love for the animals the only thing keeping her going since her husband turned his back on her. When he appears at her stables, all the longing and rising hope is crushed by the realization he’s only sought her out to gain his freedom.
She’ll give him what he wants, but she can’t resist taking one last kiss for herself. The kiss reopens emotions and attraction that neither can deny. To give in will only complicate the tangle as they try to unwind their lives. But even though Rosalind doesn’t care about Luke’s missing leg or his money, as long as he refuses to accept himself as whole, one night with his wife will be his last.

Tackle Big Events While Writing
Posted on June 22, 2016 by Beth Carter
It’s easy to write about boy meets girl or girl meets boy. Insert a villain, some scenery, conflict, the use of senses, a bit of backstory and foreshadowing, and you’re done, right? Wrong. It’s much more interesting when you throw in big (or even small, intimate) events. Whether they are a fact of life (like a birth or death), a crazy family reunion or a tragic occurrence, your writing will be enriched and become much more realistic by adding these details.
Here are examples of . . .

HOT Summer, COOL Pie HL Carpenter
Guests talk about
HOT Summer, COOL Pie
by
HL Carpenter
We’re fortunate enough to live where fresh citrus fruit is readily available, and one of our favorites is a small oval sweet-sour gem called the kumquat. We like simple, and there’s no peeling, coring, or slicing involved in kumquat eating. Yank that little beauty off the tree or pull it out of the package, rinse, and eat. The entire fruit is edible – the skin, the seeds, and the soft, tart center pulp.
That simplicity is what we like about our kumquat pie recipe too. Toss a clamshell’s worth of kumquats into the food processor or blender, fold the resulting puree into fresh whipped cream, lemon juice, and sweetened condensed milk, pour the mixture into a pie shell, and chill in the refrigerator. Garnished with a dollop of whipped cream, you’ve got a summertime treat that can’t be beat.
Kumquat Pie
9″ pie shell*
⅓ cup plus 1 tbsp. shortening
1 cup flour
½ tsp. salt
2 -3 tbsp. water
Preheat the oven to 475°F
Mix the flour and salt and cut the shortening into the mixture until it resembles small peas.
Sprinkle in water and stir with a fork until the mixture sticks together.
Gather the mixture into a ball and roll into a round a bit larger than your pie plate.
Crimp the edges of the pastry along the side of the pie plate, prick the pastry with a fork, and bake in oven 8-10 minutes, until golden brown.
Filling **
One pint-sized clamshell package of kumquats (enough to make 2/3 cup puree)
One 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk
½ cup lemon juice
1 cup whipping cream
3 tbsp. sugar
Wash and puree the kumquats in a blender or food processor.
Pour the condensed milk and the lemon juice into a bowl and beat 1-2 minutes.
In a separate bowl, beat the whipping cream with 3 Tablespoons of sugar until stiff (above five minutes).
Combine whipped cream with the condensed milk mixture and beat until thick. Fold in the pureed kumquats.
Pour the kumquat mixture into the baked pie shell and chill in the refrigerator until set.
Garnish (if desired)**
1 cup whipping cream
3 tbsp. sugar
Before serving the pie, combine 1 cup whipping cream and 3 Tablespoons of sugar and beat until stiff. Garnish the pie with the whipped cream.
Tips and tricks
* We like a home-baked pie shell, but you can substitute ready-made. A plain or chocolate graham cracker pie shell adds a delicious flavor dimension to the finished pie.
** Instead of making your own whipped cream with the whipping cream and sugar recipe, you can substitute ready-made whipping cream, both in the pie ingredients and as a garnish.
While you’re snacking on your cool, delicious pie, enjoy an excerpt from our young adult book, Pirate Summer.
Fifteen year old Josey is a liar. She’d like to stop. But after Mom left, the lies started popping out, like the time Josey left her little brother at the library and told Dad he’d run away.
Then Josey meets a boy who tells bigger whoppers than she does. He says he’s the son of a privateer who’s been dead two centuries. He’s so convincing Josey’s brother believes every word and sets off to find the privateer’s hidden treasure.
When her brother disappears, Josey is sure she knows where he’s gone. But everyone thinks she’s lying again. Everyone, that is, except the so-called privateer’s son. He knows she’s telling the truth because jeweled riches are only part of his tale. There’s also the snooperscope, a device that makes time leaps possible, like the one that brought him to the present.
The story is fantastical…and yet Josey will do anything to save her brother, including traveling back in time two hundred years with a boy she can’t trust.

Dark Heart of the Sun
Blurb:
She is determined to live life on her own terms. Destiny has other plans.
Rookie journalist Cassidy Chandler wakes to an ugly bruise on her neck, a hole in her memory, and a fiancé who seems to know more about what happened than he’s telling. It’s enough to make Cassidy call off the engagement and move out, even if that means trading a posh South Florida mansion for a dilapidated beach house. Unfortunately, she also trades one devious man for another questionable character in her unexpected new roommate: the darkly enigmatic and exasperatingly French Dominic Marchant.
For Dominic Marchant secrecy is a matter of survival. As a newborn vampire with dangerous enemies, he’s sure the headstrong young woman invading his lair with an unknown vampire’s mark on her throat is about to get him killed. But the charming Cassidy resists his every effort to make her leave and even embroils him in her own tumultuous life. Before he knows it, she has stolen his heart and helps him rediscover his lost humanity. Now he’s fighting to protect her not only from the ancient vampires hunting him, but also from his own deadly desire for her.
But her secretive ex isn’t done with her yet, and neither is the dark prophecy Cassidy and Dominic’s unlikely relationship has set in motion. Together they are swept up in a battle where nothing is as it seems, love and deception are the weapons of choice, and the only way to survive is to risk everything—for each other.
Excerpt:
She sniffed at the sauce coating the steaming end of a cooking spoon he extended to her. The delightful seasoning made her mouth water and ignited irresistible wickedness. Two could play this game.
Very deliberately she put her lips around the tip and sucked. She closed her eyes, savoring the flavor, then moaned a little when the spoon slid out of her mouth. The taste was exquisite, both bold and delicate, and her senses writhed in culinary ecstasy. But she forced her face to remain at least somewhat neutral and made a huge show of tasting, licking her lips, frowning in thought, and sampling the spoon for seconds and thirds as though undecided. When she stole a peek at the chef, she was pleased to see the dark scowl and slack jaw. He looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.
“Mmmm. I guess it’s all right.”
“Liar.” He leaned across the counter. But instead of moving away, she froze, breathless with anticipation of she-knew-not-what. He came even closer.
“It is a sweet, sighing orgasm on a spoon and you know it,” he whispered against her ear, his accent as thick as the sauce. The words curled down her spine in a tingling helix of sensation, engulfing her in liquid heat. When she shivered, he drew back. His face left no doubt that he knew precisely what effect he had on her. Maybe two could play, but only one could win.

Friday Features Nerds Unite D.R. Grady
Author
D.R. Grady
Talking about
Stalker Research
D.R. Grady, author of Nerds Unite, has stopped by today to talk about the research she did for her book. This research is about a subject that few of us think about but is a serious issue in the world today. So here is D.R.
The heroine in Nerds Unite, Katy Greene, has to contend with a stalker, so some research was necessary. There are some interesting and helpful facts about stalkers online. The numbers of people who endure a stalker are staggering. While there is a reason for the stalker behavior and it is resolved in Nerds Unite, many people live in this miserable circumstance for years with no explanation or relief.
According to the Stalking Resource Center, 7.5 million people are stalked every year—that number differed on various sites, but all sites agreed upon millions of people who suffer at the hands of a stalker. Both men and women are targets, although women are more likely to be stalked. Up to 85% of stalker victims know their stalker; some are people they have dated.
Stalkers are dubbed as such because they force an unwanted relationship upon their intended victim; their reasons for doing so is due to resentment, social awkwardness, hatred, the desire for intimacy, or the need to control. Their means of communication may include emails, texts, phone calls, sending gifts, trying to meet with the victim in person, and can escalate to damaging the victim’s property, threatening to or actually harming the victim, their pets, and/or family members.
The stalker who is tech savvy might go so far as to monitor their victim’s phone calls and computer activity, track their every move, and/or monitor them via hidden cameras. Stalkers seek information about their victim with online research, hiring a private investigator, going through the victim’s trash, even breaking into their home.
Many victims of stalkers have lost time at work, been forced to move, and experience higher levels of anxiety, insomnia, social dysfunction, and severe depression as a direct result of being stalked. Most believe they will never be free of their stalker.
Stalking is a crime in all 50 states, and if you believe you are being stalked, immediately contact the police. They are trained to deal with stalkers and many do so on a routine basis. Law enforcement are also aware of various agencies in place to assist victims. There are procedures a victim can follow to assist law enforcement and government agencies and to maintain distance from a person who has become a stalker.
Another terrible aspect of being stalked–what is portrayed in the media is not consistent with what victims experience at the hands of a real life stalker. The media does not accurately reveal the physical, social, economic, and mental harm associated with dealing with a stalker. Many victims report to suffering from PTSD and recovery is nearly impossible because the problem is ongoing, often with no end in sight.
If you believe you are being stalked, please immediately speak with someone you trust. There are accurate and safe resources available. Do not ignore this threat. Do contact the police.
There is plenty of information available for a victim to learn about how to deal with the various impacts of a stalker. In Nerds Unite, Katy fears she is being stalked, but is afraid to admit this. Her reaction is common, but denial doesn’t prevent her from suffering at the hands of a man who is eager to pursue an unwanted relationship with her. By admitting her fears and expressing them to someone she trusts, she begins the process of taking back her life.
The steps she takes are available to everyone. Please be aware there is help out there for all who are victimized.
Please stay safe!
D.R. thanks for the information and good advice. Now let’s learn more about Nerds Unite.
BLURB:
Life is full of promise for Katy Greene. New town. New job. New BFF. Everything is great…except for the creepy feeling that someone is watching her.
After they confirm Katy’s stalker is real, she has some explaining to do to BFF Leo de Vosse. Not to mention some explaining to herself. When did her feelings for Leo turn into something more than friendship? The stakes are high as she fights for her life with the stalker, and for her heart with Leo.

EXCERPT:
“I wish this would all go away.” Katy plopped onto the bed again. She burst into tears a moment later.
With a silent groan and a definite internal roar, he leaped to her side to fold her close. Her tears wet his shirt. His fists tightened as he quelled the intense need to pummel the walls. But he kept his arms gentle around Katy. Soothing her, rocking her, because she was his everything.
It didn’t take her long to shove out the tears. She sniffed and he bent, with her still in his arms, to pluck some tissues out of the box on his side of the bed. As though made to do so, Katy flowed with him. The movement so natural he barely noticed it.
“Thanks.” Although watery, her gratitude was genuine. “I’m sorry for falling apart on you.”
Why does her thanks irritate me? “Who else are you going to fall apart on?” That wasn’t jealousy, right?
He was mollified when she nestled closer. Her head tucked perfectly under his chin and he sat quietly with her now, rocking her. Her arm moved so he surmised she must be wiping away the tear damage. Then both her arms clutched him. A warm gust of air fanned across his neck and he wanted more.
How much more he couldn’t say. Just more. Why? It was irritating to have this—whatever it was—sneak into their platonic relationship. This wasn’t the first time it happened but it needed to be the last.
One thing he knew, this wasn’t a platonic need. The desire to kiss her kept growing.
“You’re tensing up. What’s wrong?”
He blinked as she pulled back to peer at him. Her expression was wary, and a little fearful. Leo swallowed, but in order to alleviate her fears, he needed to say something.
“I just had the overwhelming urge to kiss you. Where did that come from, Katy?”
She didn’t look shocked. Her knowing nod rocked him back on his heels. “I’ve experienced that same urge a few times lately.”
He blinked. She had the same thoughts?
Her eyes were red rimmed, nose pink, and watery trails crossed her face.
“When did you become the most beautiful woman in the world?” Aggression leaked.
Before she could answer, her phone rang.
Leaning forward, she scooped it up. “It’s Trixi.” Katy answered the call, putting her on speakerphone. “Hello, Trix.”

Wednesday Special Spotlight A Face in the Crowd by Christina Kirby
Focuses on
A Face in the Crowd
By
Christina Kirby
Blurb – Alexis Hightower considers trust a four letter word, and she has no intention of getting serious with anyone. After all, her day job as a nurse is plenty serious enough. On one of her nights off, she attends a concert for her favorite band and ends up on stage. She never expected to meet the legendary singer in person or that he would be the one to make her question her way of life. But how do you learn to trust again when the one you want is desired by thousands?
Oliver Honeycutt has it all, success, fame, admirers, but when his family is faced with the unthinkable, none of it matters. Stranded in Atlanta, he meets Alexis who’s unlike any woman he’s known before. As his attraction grows, plans for the future change which leaves someone desperate to keep them apart. But Oliver won’t be easily discouraged. To have a future with Alexis he’ll do whatever it takes to make her see the man behind the image.
Buy Link: https://amzn.com/B01G7FENTA
Excerpt:
Oliver made his way back to the mike and shouted, “Do you want some more, Atlanta?”
Lexie’s scream mixed with the other fan’s and echoed throughout the room as Oliver sang the band’s first number one. As he moved from one side of the stage to the other, Lexie danced, arms over her head, as she let go. In the chaos of the noise, the heat of the bodies moving as one, and the music, she didn’t have to think or feel. She could just be.
A hand reached out for her and Simone hit her arm, mouth open in shock. Lexie blinked once and raised her eyes to meet those of Oliver. Up close, he was even better looking than in the magazines. Her heart stopped or maybe it leaped from her chest. She wasn’t sure. As if controlled by a stranger she reached for his hand and allowed him, with the help of two security guards, to pull her up onto the stage.
With her stomach in her throat, she stood awkwardly while Oliver sang to her. This wasn’t happening. It couldn’t be. Survival never pulled people up onto the stage. At least, they never had. But, there he was, positioned behind her, with his stomach pressed to her back. The heat of his skin and hers, melded together, so hot she feared their clothes would ignite.
Her eyes found Simone’s, who peeked out from behind her cell phone where she was recording what promised to be the best moment of Lexie’s life.
She dared a glance over her shoulder and feared she would faint when Oliver offered her a grin from behind the mike. Dear God he was hot. He pressed into her closer and placed a hand on her hip. Red, hot heat surged into her face. The move was definitely one she wouldn’t want her dad to see, but she was glad it was happening. As the song wound down, Oliver moved to stand beside her. Over his shoulder she saw his brother, Bailey, wailing on his blue Fender. The entire experience was surreal. His brother looked up and smiled, but something was wrong with his face.
She narrowed her eyes to get a better look, sure the lights were playing tricks on her. At the same time, he swiped a hand over his face and when he pulled it away, blood was smeared across his upper lip. He went back to playing, but his nose continued to bleed.
Her gaze refocused on Oliver. “Your brother,” she tried to explain over the music.
When he didn’t register what she was trying to say, she pointed.
Oliver’s head whipped around. For a brief moment, his eyes widened and then, as quickly as she’d seen it, the look was gone. Oliver finished the song and led her back to the edge of the stage where she was lowered back into the crowd. When she looked up, he met her gaze. The moment was brief, but she felt it. A moment of recognition between them. One that said he was sad it had to end. She wanted to reach for him, but she couldn’t. Instead, she stood frozen as fans around her pushed in and slapped her on the back. Oliver waved to his admirers and rushed off toward his brother.
