Friday Features Midnight Angel Tracey A. Wood

Friday Features
Visits with
Tracey A. Wood
Author of
Midnight Angel
Today we get a special treat. As with most books, from the first writing to the final not every scene is kept. Author Tracey A. Wood has stopped by today to share with us one of those scenes from her first book Midnight Angel. Tracey thank you for giving us a glimpse into something other readers may not get to see. Take it away.

Thank you, Catherine and Donald for hosting me today.

Kat Shaw, is the heroin of Midnight Angel.

This is a scene that didn’t make it into the book.

Kat and Jonathon were friends from high school.

Their friendship began when Kat got into trouble fighting with the school bitch, who was pushing him around. He would not fight back which she saw as a weakness. But that was not the case. It was because she was a girl and Jonathan would never hit a girl. She had been having a go at him every day for months, making snide remarks behind his back about him being gay. Things gradually got worse and worse until she started to get physical with him and by physical I mean violent.

One day it all came to a head. It was when the bitch, also known as Donna, punched Jonathan in the nose. She started off pushing him around. Then moved on to slapping him at the back of the head. Her grand finale was the punch in the nose. The blood erupted like a volcanic explosion, splattering ever one within a few feet of the incident. I had seen everything and kept my temper well, until that happened.

My blood boiled as I tried to control the emotions welling up inside me. She was a bully. Something, I couldn’t and still cannot stand. I felt the anger start in the pit of my belly. In a sudden crescendo, it erupted. I could not stop it! I was shaking all over. Before I knew what had happened, I was on top of her and she was flat on her back. I was reigning blows down on her. She was trying to cover her face, screaming like a banshee, and begging me to stop. The more she screamed the more I hit her, until I realised Jonathan was pleading with me to leave it. She wasn’t worth it. The next thing I knew, I was lifted in the air, landing on the ground with a hard thump on my backside. It all happened so quickly. I looked around wondering what the hell had happened. I realized, Mr Newman, one of the teachers, had seen what was going on. Everyone knew what Donna had been doing but I still got into trouble. Two wrongs don’t make a right, the headmaster told me.

Whatever.

From then on Jonathan and I were friends and he didn’t get any more shit, from that bitch Donna.

Wow Tracey thanks for a glimpse of a deleted part of your book. If that scene didn’t make it, the rest of the book must be really intense. smile So, let’s take a look at the blurb for the story.

Back of book blurb:

After almost losing her life in a vicious, bloody attack. Kat Shaw, a thirty-something, divorcee, discovers that there are such things as monsters. And the predator who attacked her is not human. She starts to develop unusual skills which have murderous consequences. And is an unwilling witness to multiple, brutal murders, seen through the eyes of a killer. Thrown into a battle of Good vs. Evil, she falls in love with two men who are not what they seem. While her attacker stalks her and continues to murder the innocent. She has to find the inner strength to take on and fight the demons from hell. To protect her family and friends while also trying to save her own life.MIDNIGHT ANGEL cover

If that short bit and the cover haven’t interested you yet let’s try an excerpt:

I had set my alarm clock so I could get up early in the morning, to head off to the cottage. Turning off the light and lying down, I snuggled under the covers.

I was just nodding off when I heard ringing. I hit the alarm clock, but the noise didn’t stop. Blinking, it dawned on me that it wasn’t the clock, it was the phone. I jumped up and answered it before the machine did.

“Kat?” the voice on the other end said.

“Yes?” I didn’t recognize the voice. Who would be calling at this time of night?

“It’s me, Sam.”

“Oh, hi,” I said, my voice flat.

What does he want?

“I was wondering, do you want to go out on Monday evening?”

“Oh, no, I don’t think so.” I tried to think of an excuse.

He went quiet, then asked, “Why not?”

“I don’t think it’s a good idea.”

As the words left my mouth, I realized I shouldn’t have said them. I should have thought of something better. I didn’t know what else to say.

“Oh, so that’s it? You don’t want to see me again, do you?” I could hear the attitude in his voice.

“No. I think we should call it a day.” The phone went quiet.

“Sam?”

“That’s about right, you bitch!”

I froze, stunned.

“You lead me on and then dump me, you whore.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. My God, where was the caring man from earlier? The one who had given me his jacket.

I slammed the phone down. As I did, I could hear him shouting and swearing at me. I couldn’t believe my ears.

Wow! I certainly had a narrow escape with him. I’m glad I didn’t tell him in person.

I was angry, annoyed that I hadn’t retaliated.

He was so nice. Who would have thought he could turn so nasty? Just wait until I get my hands on Jonathan. I’ll wring his bloody neck. What was he thinking, introducing me to a lunatic?

I made sure all the windows and doors were locked and finally went to bed.

I dreamt about the man on the rock. It was different this time.

The nameless vision of masculine beauty watched the water bubble and swirl as it flowed past him. He turned his head in my direction and smiled. There was something wrong with his eyes. They were not the beautiful blue eyes I loved so much. They were yellow! He glanced back at the stream and my gaze followed his. I looked back to where he stood and took a step forward. He wasn’t there! My heart sank.

Where had he gone?

I scanned the area but he was nowhere to be seen. I heard a noise above me and saw a large bird flying high in the sky. It swooped toward the stream and took off into the woods. Where did he go? He was there one minute and gone the next. I had just plucked the courage up to speak to him and he’d disappeared.

Damn it!

Excerpt:

The telephone jangling pulled Delaney Ramsey out of a deep sleep. Moving the digital clock on the nightstand closer to her, she squinted at the bright green numbers. Three a.m. She fumbled for the receiver.

“If you’re calling at this ungodly hour, someone better be dead,” she mumbled into the phone.

“Delaney, ’tis Eli McCraigen.”

Sitting up, she pulled the duvet cover with her. Why was the Keeper of the Stone calling her? “What’s wrong, Eli?”

“Dinna worry yerself. ’Tis good news.”

Slumping against the headboard, she yawned, the adrenalin draining away with his words. “If it’s such good news, why couldn’t you wait until tomorrow?”

“I need ye tae call a special meeting o’ the council before they get away from the city.”

“All fifteen?”

“Nay, only the senior council. I’ve a new Promised One tae present.”

“Why wasn’t he presented last night at Samhain?”

“He hadnae committed tae the cause, and he dinna have a ring until minutes before midnight.”

“This is highly irregular, Eli. I don’t know if I can get the council to agree.”

“Ye have tae. He’s a verra special man.”

“A Promised One who hasn’t even had his ring more than a few hours. That’s unheard of. How can you expect someone like that to pass even one proof test?”

“He’s already shown me two–and they’re not the paltry tests most Promised Ones have failed. He has the elusive, legendary powers, and he did them using the power of other shifters’ rings.”

She snapped awake. “Other shifters’ rings? Whose?”

“Mine, Alexi Jordan’s and Sylvia Jordan’s.”

Delaney switched the light on, knocking her reading glasses to the floor with the motion. Great. She’d just bought them. Leaning over the edge of the bed, she retrieved the glasses and put them on. “Sylvia Jordan Riley?”

“’Tis that what the she-witch is calling herself now?”

“Seems so. Her name has come across my desk in her official capacity with Homeland Security.”

“That’s the other thing I need from ye. Sylvia’s butting intae Rhys’ and Alexi’s jobs and personal lives. I’m pretty certain she knows what he is, too. I need reinforcements.”

In all the years she’d known Eli, he’d never asked for assistance. And he comes to me now. At the worst possible time. “I’m honored you’d think of me, but I can’t do more than call the council for you. Ask one of them to get your reinforcements.”

“Fine, the council can arrange that, but I need ye on a more personal mission.”

“I’m in the middle of something very important and time consuming. I can’t help.”

“Dinna ye know who’s asking ye, lassie?”

She knew all right. The most powerful man in the entire Turning Stone Society. She was crazy to even consider refusing him. Her position on the council rested on his say so. However, finding her daughter meant more to her than anything else. “Normally I’d be willing to die for you, Eli, but–”

“Let’s pray dying won’t be what we’ll be needing. But I could be putting ye in a verra dangerous position.”

That did it. No way could she help if it might cost her life. Not now. Not until she found Lila. “I’m sorry. I can’t.”

“I need ye, Delaney. Come tae University Hospital and see me. I’m in ER.”

“ER? Are you all right?”

“We had a little run-in with a panther.”

Friday Features The Recalcitrant Duke Emma Lane

Friday Features
Talks with
Emma Lane
Author of
The Recalcitrant Duke

We are talking with Emma Lane today about her characters’ “Job Description” to be in The Recalcitrant Duke. This is an interesting way to think about characters and their motivation. Please tell us more Emma.

Noblesse Oblige is a French phrase which means the nobility obliges. The concept is that with privilege come responsibilities. When thinking of this particular character I wondered if ever there was a duke who just detested the thought of all that “obliging” he’d need to do in order to take up his title. Leadership is complicit in the concept of fulfilling a particular role for the nobility. Our hero rebelled against the strict interpretation of what his father thought he owed to his title. Choosing life’s work is one thing; being born into it is quite another as we shall see in The Recalcitrant Duke.

Contrast that to a woman who has all her life shouldered responsibilities which belonged to others. The concept that she could make different choices has never occurred to her. As they stand staring at each other across a wide gulf, the story begins. One thing we have learned. Not every character thinks the role of a title is a wonderful thing. Even in modern history we know of one king who abdicated his role in order to marry the woman he loved.

The Recalcitrant Duke

A prodigal son returns to find his birthplace usurped by an unworthy successor. To his confusion, he faces a dying father and a woman who claims an engagement of which he knows nothing. Almost he returns to his travels rather than face the responsibilities thrust upon him by his birth, but to his glee he discovers his childhood sweetheart residing in the ducal residence. Beautiful Miss Leticia Harrowgood, turned governess, has done little more than assume duties others have abandoned, until she meets the future duke, who teaches her invaluable information concerning the freedom of choice. Lessons learned from each other grow until both are poised on the precipice of final commitments. The Recalcitrant Duke

Wednesday Special Spotlight The Promised One C.D. Hersh

Wednesday Special Spotlight
Shining on
The Promised One

The Promised One is the first book in The Turning Stone Chronicles. Book two Blood Brothers. Book three Son of the Moonless Night. Book four, The Mercenary & the Shifters, coming soon.

Blurb for—The Promised One (The Turning Stone Chronicles)

In the wrong hands, the Turning Stone ring is a powerful weapon for evil. So, when homicide detective Alexi Jordan discovers her secret society mentor has been murdered and his magic ring stolen, she is forced to use her shape-shifting powers to catch the killer. By doing so, she risks the two most important things in her life—her badge and the man she loves.

Rhys Temple always knew his fiery cop partner and would-be-girlfriend, Alexi Jordan, had a few secrets. He considers that part of her charm. But when she changes into a man, he doesn’t find that as charming. He’ll keep her secret to keep her safe, but he’s not certain he can keep up a relationship—professional or personal.

Danny Shaw needs cash for the elaborate wedding his fiancée has planned, so he goes on a mugging spree. But when he kills a member of the secret society of Turning Stones, and steals a magic ring that gives him the power to shape shift, Shaw gets more than he bargained for.ThePromisedOneHighRes

EXCERPT:

The woman stared at him, blood seeping from the corner of her mouth. “Return the ring, or you’ll be sorry.”

With a short laugh he stood. “Big words for someone bleeding to death.” After dropping the ring into his pocket, he gathered the scattered contents of her purse, and started to leave.

“Wait.” The words sounded thick and slurred . . . two octaves deeper . . . with a Scottish lilt.

Shaw frowned and spun back toward her. The pounding in his chest increased. On the ground, where the woman had fallen, lay a man.

He wore the same slinky blue dress she had—the seams ripped, the dress top collapsed over hard chest muscles, instead of smoothed over soft, rounded curves. The hem skimmed across a pair of hairy, thick thighs. Muscled male thighs. Spiked heels hung at an odd angle, toes jutting through the shoe straps. The same shoes she’d been wearing.

The alley tipped. Shaw leaned against the dumpster to steady himself. He shook his head to clear the vision, then slowly moved his gaze over the body.

A pair of steel-blue eyes stared out of a chiseled face edged with a trim salt-and-pepper beard. Shaw whirled around scanning the alley.

Where was the woman? And who the hell was this guy?

     Terrified, Shaw fled.

The dying man called out, “You’re cursed. Forever.”

The Simple Ideas Behind Promotion for Writers

By guest Poster A,J, Cosmo

Everyone wants to promote, or should I say, they need to promote. For some reason authors tend to shy away from sales. We tell people that it’s about the passion, or the craft, or the love of just doing it, which is true, but it would be disingenuous to say that money isn’t a factor.

So how do we sell books? Well, why do people buy books?

There are three reasons why a person purchases a book:

Friday Feature No Greater Love Eris Field

Friday Features
Talks with
Eris Field
Author of
No Greater Love

Eris Field has graciously agreed to stop by and share with us. First a little about how No Greater Love was born and then her interesting background. Take it away Eris.

When a story begins to bubble in my mind, one of the characters usually tells me what the story will be about. In my recently released novel, No Greater Love, I was told early on that the heroine would be a Circassian beauty. Circassian women from the Caucuses with their tall, slender figures, glossy dark hair, ivory skin, and oval shaped faces with large dark eyes and delicately molded lips have long been considered to be the most beautiful women in the world. At one time, they were the prized treasures of Sultans’ harems.

Did I know a treasure from a Sultan’s harem? Of course I did. When my late husband, Dogan, and I were writing a biographical novel, A Legacy of Change: The Saga of a Turkish Family from Empire to Republic, I learned about his grandmother, a Circassian beauty who had been given to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Life was not easy for a new gift to the harem. First came lessons: deportment and language lessons, dance lessons, poetry lessons, lessons in playing a musical instrument, lessons in making perfect Turkish coffee, and finally lessons in the erotic arts. Only extremely talented young ladies were introduced to the Sultan. The others carried out the work of the harem or sometimes were given as gifts by the Sultan to a highly honored guest or to an admired military commander. For Grandmother, who had become proficient in only two skills—coffee making and playing the tambur, a seven string lute—marriage was arranged with a young office assigned to a frontier outpost of the Ottoman Empire where he was charged with defending the land against Bulgarian attacks.

Life was not easy on the frontier, and Grandfather had to send for his older unmarried sister, Zubeyde, to come and help his young wife when her first child was born. For Grandmother, life became more difficult with the birth of two sons and greater threats from Bulgaria. As conditions continued to worsen, Grandmother became frantic. One day, she propped her tambur against the door and ran away with a dashing Lieutenant who promised to take her back to Istanbul.

With an attack from the Bulgarians and the Greeks eminent, Grandfather arranged for horse-drawn wagons to take Zubeyde and his three children back to Istanbul. They were not alone on the road as they made that hazardous journey. Mothers carrying babies and leading small children were trying to walk home. As the journey progressed, Zubeyde added the children whose mothers had died to the wagons. When they finally got to Istanbul, Zubeyde had added 46 children to the household. I was privileged to meet one of those children when she was an older woman and had made her way to Canada. Clearly, No Greater Love would have to have refugee children.

I hope you enjoy No Greater Love with its Circassian beauty and refugee children. It also has two lonely people who find love and nearly lose it.

Blurb for No Greater Love

Janan, orphaned at age eight by an earthquake in Turkey and adopted by an American couple, has grown into an enchantingly beautiful woman, a Circassian beauty. She dreams of having a home of her own, a home with love, but love seems to have passed her by as she spends her time working as a nurse and looking after her family, including an elderly, frail uncle, Carl, who had been sent as a child from Holland to escape Nazi deportation of Dutch Jews during World War II and who now yearns to go home.

Jilted once, Dutch child psychiatrist Pieter has retreated from life and devotes himself to caring for the child refugees flooding into Amsterdam. Now, struggling with late-onset leukemia, he travels to New York for a second opinion and to visit his old friend and mentor, Carl. At Carl’s home, he meets Janan and feels love again.

Janan recognizes Pieter as the man of her dreams. Believing that love is passing her by and knowing that Pieter will be gone in the morning, she asks him for one night. Pieter introduces Janan to the purposes and outcomes of each of eight magical kisses and vows to himself to overcome his illness and return a well man.

Later, alone and facing complications of pregnancy, Janan accepts Carl’s quid-pro-quo offer of help, a decision that may destroy her chances of finding happiness. No Greater Love

Excerpt from No Greater Love

“You gave your time to help me. I am truly grateful.” He rested his hand on her shoulder, shielding her from view of others in the lobby. “Tell me. How may I repay you?”

She lifted her chin and raised her eyes to meet his gaze. “Give me the night.”

“Let’s sit down and you can tell me exactly why you want a night of my time.” When she did not speak, he asked coolly, “That is what you said, isn’t it?”

She dropped her eyes and said in a low voice, “I will be 28 tomorrow and I have never been held in a man’s arms.” She stood up abruptly and crossed her arms across her breasts. Raising her head defiantly she said, “I have never been kissed and I want it now. I want to be held and kissed.” She glared at him. “More than once.” Her eyes were blazing. “I want it all.”

“Why me?” He had risen and was close enough to touch her face but he kept his hands on his hips.

“You will be gone in the morning.”

“You want to seduce me because I will be gone in the morning?” Anger brought a red line to his cheeks as he snapped erect.

“I didn’t say I wanted to seduce you.” She stood up and began to pace. ‘”You just don’t get it, do you?”

He shook his head. “Apparently not.”

“My adoptive parents were middle-aged when I came to live with them. They followed old customs.” She sighed, “When I was in high school, they did not let me date or even go out with a group of my classmates.” She half smiled and shrugged. “And then there was the fact that I was taller than all the boys in my class. I never fit in.” she mumbled defensively. “Even in college, I could never figure out how to turn a chance meeting into a date. Others did it so easily.” She bowed her head. “I am a failure with men.”

He raised his arms as though to hold her and then dropped them to his sides. “Don’t you realize that you are an exquisitely beautiful woman?” He shook his head in disbelief. “How can you not know?” He smiled at her and said teasingly, “You could have any man in the world on his knees begging for a chance to hold you, to kiss you.”

“What a delightful picture.” She laughed mockingly and then sobered instantly. “At 28, my world is very small and the men who might have discovered me have already found their heart’s desire. They are married.” She looked at him without wavering. “The ones who are left are often divorced and mourning the loss of their children, or there are those who want a sexual partner but nothing else. You saw them in the bar.” She shuddered and looked away. “If I were to accept their offers, I would have to face myself in the morning and face the town gossip for as long as I live here.”

“Won’t you have to face yourself in the morning whatever you do?”

“Yes, but you will be gone.”

“I see. I am acceptable solely because I have a return flight ticket in my pocket.” His voice was icy. “Is that why you so kindly selected me?”

“I never meant to insult you” she whispered edging toward the door.

“You are probably right. All I’m good for is a one-night stand and,” he continued savagely, “I’m not even sure I am good for that.” He turned away from her. “Who would want me for anything more than a one-night stand?” He touched the port-wine birthmark on the left side of his face. “Before, I just had this visible defect, but now, I have even less to offer anyone—a 40% chance of surviving this illness and, if I survive, it is most unlikely I will be able to father children.” He turned back and said bitterly, “You chose well. Your pigeon will be gone in the morning.”

Bio:

Eris Field was born in the Green Mountains of Vermont–Jericho, Vermont to be precise– close by the home of Wilson Bentley (aka Snowflake Bentley), the first person in the world to photograph snowflakes. She learned from her Vermont neighbors that pursuit of one’s dream is a worthwhile life goal.

As a seventeen year old student nurse at Albany Hospital, Eris met a Turkish surgical intern who she would later marry. He told her fascinating stories about the history of Turkey, about the loss of the Ottoman Empire, and about forced population exchanges. After they married and moved to Buffalo, Eris worked as a nurse at Children’s Hospital and at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

After taking time off to raise five children and amassing rejection letters for the short stories she wrote, Eris earned her master’s degree in Psychiatric Nursing at the University at Buffalo. Later, she taught psychiatric nursing at the University and wrote a textbook for psychiatric nurse practitioners—an endeavor requiring a great deal of hard labor.

Now, Eris lives her life dream, writing novels, usually international, contemporary romances. Her interest in history and her experience in psychiatry often play a part in her stories. She is a member of the Romance Writers of America and the Western New York Romance Writers. In addition to writing, Eris’ interests include studying Ottoman history, supporting the Crossroads Springs Orphanage in Kenya for children orphaned by AIDS, and learning more about the old cities of the world.

Good morning all! Today in going to talk about the ‘R’ word…

REVIEWS, REVIEW, REVIEWS….

Chances are that anyone reading this post has both bought and read books at some point in time. But the question is: Did you write a review once you finished that last delectable page?

In most cases, the answer word be no. In fact, nine times out of ten, the answer is no. But why is that?

Well, like everyone else, your time is probably limited. Between work and family, There never seems to be enough time in the day right? With everything going on in life, it’s easy to forget to leave a review.

But oh, those reviews are so very important. Why?

I’m so glad you asked. Here, let me explain.

Friday Feature Janis Lane Whispers of Danger and Love

Friday Features
Talks with
Janis Lane
Author of
Whispers of Danger and Love

Author Janis Lane talks with us today about her book, Whispers of Danger and Love, and what is special about the story. Here is Janis:

Whispers is a cozy mystery with adventure. What makes this story different and special to my heart is the voice I’ve given to Cheryl. With this character I’ve indulged my personal love of plants and gardening. Through her voice you’ll hear about Crocosmia, a beautiful perennial dear to hummingbirds, a moth (Spinx) that pretends to be a hummer, why one plant is commonly called 4 o’clock, why a Lisianthus makes a better cut flower, than a petunia, why container gardening is great for some folks and not for others, and other such jewels of information gardeners might find interesting. (Who is the brown-eyed plant killer beast?) For once I did no research. I indulged my love for plants to my hearts content and Cheryl totally agreed with me. I hint of this inclusion to readers of Cozies who might also be totally foolish about gardening, as am I.Whispers of Danger and Love_500x750

BLURB:

Cheryl Esterbrook is a landscape designer living in a cottage left to her by her grandmother. Her garden, of course, is a showpiece. Next door, an old acquaintance from her childhood moves into his grandmother’s home with boisterous companions enjoying the yard in a different way. Sparks fly with the possibility for a romance. Mystery and danger rear ugly heads. All is eventually settled to the satisfaction of all.

Peace in the neighborhood ended when hunky Detective David Larkin moved next door. Never mind he was Cheryl Esterbrook’s childhood heart throb, she wasn’t about to allow him to disrupt her quiet, orderly life style. Designing gardens was her work, but David didn’t hesitate to involve her in spying on a gangster and his live-in girlfriend. Cheryl should have listened when the man who grew up to be a serious policeman whispered across the hedge of imminent dangers in the days to come. Life takes a surprising turn when two people who loved each other as children transfer that affection to the adults they have now become.

Excerpt:

“I was shocked when she left me the house, you know.” She guessed from the tone of his voice he was serious. He really meant it. Was this the Scot or the Irish piece he used to express his guilt?

“She used to talk about you all the time. She kept up with your doings over the years, although she didn’t care much for your lady friends.” Cheryl glanced at him from underneath her eyelashes.

His eyes twinkled but his face transformed into inscrutably bland nothingness. She snorted, and he flashed a broad grin. She struggled to maintain her composure albeit recognizing the memorial power of that smile. There was history between the two of them. For a moment, the years dropped away, and two naughty children sat together plotting their next wicked escapade.
