Been thinking about…where we came from

July 18, 2016 by summersrye

I sometimes pet sit. One of the dogs I walk takes us through a moss-lined, wooded path under a canopy of green trees and climbing vines. A stream runs alongside. Ahead, near the wooden footbridge, slick with moss, I can hear racing water. Because the dog I walk is a hound, we frequently pause so he can conduct in-depth sniffs of particular odors. This gives me time to notice and enjoy . . .

The Promised One (The Turning Stone Chronicles)ThePromisedOneHighRes

In the wrong hands, the Turning Stone ring is a powerful weapon for evil. So, when homicide detective Alexi Jordan discovers her secret society mentor has been murdered and his magic ring stolen, she is forced to use her shape-shifting powers to catch the killer. By doing so, she risks the two most important things in her life—her badge and the man she loves.

Rhys Temple always knew his fiery cop partner and would-be-girlfriend, Alexi Jordan, had a few secrets. He considers that part of her charm. But when she changes into a man, he doesn’t find that as charming. He’ll keep her secret to keep her safe, but he’s not certain he can keep up a relationship—professional or personal.

Danny Shaw needs cash for the elaborate wedding his fiancée has planned, so he goes on a mugging spree. But when he kills a member of the secret society of Turning Stones, and steals a magic ring that gives him the power to shape shift, Shaw gets more than he bargained for.

EXCERPT:

The woman stared at him, blood seeping from the corner of her mouth. “Return the ring, or you’ll be sorry.”

With a short laugh he stood. “Big words for someone bleeding to death.” After dropping the ring into his pocket, he gathered the scattered contents of her purse, and started to leave.

“Wait.” The words sounded thick and slurred . . . two octaves deeper . . . with a Scottish lilt.

Shaw frowned and spun back toward her. The pounding in his chest increased. On the ground, where the woman had fallen, lay a man.

He wore the same slinky blue dress she had—the seams ripped, the dress top collapsed over hard chest muscles, instead of smoothed over soft, rounded curves. The hem skimmed across a pair of hairy, thick thighs. Muscled male thighs. Spiked heels hung at an odd angle, toes jutting through the shoe straps. The same shoes she’d been wearing.

The alley tipped. Shaw leaned against the dumpster to steady himself. He shook his head to clear the vision, then slowly moved his gaze over the body.

A pair of steel-blue eyes stared out of a chiseled face edged with a trim salt-and-pepper beard. Shaw whirled around scanning the alley.

Where was the woman? And who the hell was this guy?

     Terrified, Shaw fled.

The dying man called out, “You’re cursed. Forever.”

Don’t miss the first of this series that InD’tale said “takes paranormal and turns it on its ear, taking shape-shifting to a whole other level.”

Excerpt

We. The word hung between them. She couldn’t look away. They stood for a long time in the narrow hallway before he closed the space between them. He moved so gradually that she didn’t realize it until his mouth was inches from hers, his warmth surrounded her, and his eyes searched hers. She couldn’t say if those eyes searched for permission; she couldn’t think at all. There was only awareness: of the man, of his warmth, of his bedroom door feet away.

The kiss came gently, a touch, a caress. She let herself feel it, starved for tenderness, and she breathed in his scent—pine and wood smoke. Her hands slid up his rough shirt, around his neck, and into the hair that hung to his collar.

Long fingers cupped her head then, splaying into her hair, and he deepened the kiss softly, gently without force. She opened gladly.

When he began to unbutton her dress she stiffened and put her hands on his chest to push him away. Perhaps it was the sensation of cold. Perhaps it was the intrusion. Perhaps reason simply asserted itself. Meggy didn’t know what brought her to her senses. She had forgotten much for a few moments, but one fact came to her clearly.

“I’m married, Rand! Fergus may be a poor excuse for a human being, but he’s still my husband. Nothing changes that.”

She almost wept when he responded immediately, respectful and concerned. He stood back, but he reached out a hand to caress her cheek.

“I’m sorry, Meggy. You deserve better.”

Friday Features My Lord Ghost Meredith Bond

Friday Features
Visit with
Meredith Bond

Do you love the stories of Edgar Allen Poe? Have you read any old gothic romances?

The original idea for My Lord Ghost, my newest Regency romance, comes from literary traditions like those. Unfortunately, I can’t write a horror story. (I tried once and ended up with In A Beginning, a short story I wrote for the horror anthology Tales from the Mist. After my husband read it, he said, “That was a really nice story”. Not what I was going for! It was supposed to be scary! It wasn’t—despite the dead bodies.

I love Poe. I love the idea of gothic romances. But I also wanted to write a modern take on them and have it be a Regency (the genre I love most).

Thus was born the idea for My Lord Ghost.

Traditional gothic romances always involve a ghost – this book’s got that! Hidden passages – yup! An ancestral curse – um… my modern take on that was PTSD, actually (the 19th century was a really dangerous time). And fainting heroines – not today’s heroines! They’re bold, strong and intelligent.

The PTSD is what plaques my poor hero and causes him to cry out in the night. Fortunately, our heroine is there to listen to him, talk to him and help him through the horrors he relives.

Another modern twist I put into this book was that I wrote it in the first person.

Horrors!

A Regency romance written in the first person—where the whole book is from the heroine’s point of view—was so strange, it completely confused one of my beta readers. She wrote back that she loved the book, but couldn’t even begin to count the number of “I”s in the book. Well, um, yes. The story is told by the heroine: “I did this. And then I did that.” We do get the hero’s story told from his perspective, but most of the book is from the heroine’s point of view.

I do apologize for all this, but I just have to do something different in my books (my other traditional Regencies (the books of the Merry Men Quartet) all have either the hero or heroine raised outside of England, and lets not even get started on my Regency-set paranormal romances!).

My heroine of My Lord Ghost, Laia, is a bold, strong, outspoken young woman who likes men. She likes meeting men. And no matter how many times she is told, she just can’t stop introducing herself to them. (I just heard you gasp, didn’t I? I know! A proper, young Regency Miss introducing herself! It’s unheard of! – and clearly requires a great number of exclamation points!!!)

Finally, Laia introduces herself to the Wrong Person (read, a gossip!) forcing her father to finally do something about this. He’s just inherited an estate from some distant cousin he didn’t even know he had, so he sends her there to mature before her debut into society.

Poor Laia. She’s a very social person. How is she going to survive being out in the middle of God-forsaken Yorkshire all alone?

Well, it turns out that she isn’t alone. Not only are there the housekeeper and butler, Mr. and Mrs. Barker, but there’s also someone crying and screaming through the night. Laia just can’t help but investigate… which leads to discovering the ghost… which leads to talking to the ghost… which leads to friendship with the ghost… which leads, well, you’ll just have to read the book to find out. J And, yes, her life is threatened—another basic necessity in all good gothic romances.

I do hope that I’ve intrigued you into learning more about My Lord Ghost. If you’d like to find out more, just hop over to my website, http://www.meredithbond.com/, or your favorite e-retailer (Amazon, Barnes&Noble.com, Kobo, or Apple iBooks) and you’ll find it there. Thanks so much!

Book Description

She only wanted to save his soul. He needed to save her life.

Laia Grace wasn’t raised in society and besides meeting men was so much fun! But when the naive Regency miss introduces herself to wrong person, her father decides that it’s time she grew up. If only he knew that the house he was sending her to had a ghost in residence.

Marcus is haunting his own home, living in the secret passages and priest holes while he tries to deal with the horrific events that led to his brother’s death. But when an angel shows up and coaxes him into telling her his story, he discovers a reason to live.

Will he be willing to risk both his own life and his heart to save her?20160930-mlg_800

EXCERPT

He walked. This morning, he had been right next to her, and there had been constant contact. Now they would appear to anyone passing to be complete strangers. “You want to tell me what is going on?”

“We are attempting to remove all stress from your life in hopes of easing the headaches.”

“No, with you. If you would prefer to be elsewhere, I can go back to my room and lie down.”

He stopped. “There is nowhere I would rather be.”

“Then why are you acting like I have the plague? Was it the kiss earlier?”

“I overstepped my boundaries this morning. I should not have done so.”

“Do you regret it?”

“I am assisting the staff here in your healing. It is inappropriate for me to come on to you.”

“Are you on staff here?”

“No.”

“That settles it.” She smiled. Closing the distance between them, she wrapped her arms around his neck. “I do not know what is going on, but I do know my pain and fears ease when you are near. I don’t claim to understand how you discern all you do, but I am starting to see things here aren’t always black and white, and sometimes I have to have faith and trust.”

After a brief second of him standing as still as a statue and her wondering if she read too much into this morning’s embrace, he relaxed. His arms snaked around her, pulling her against his hard body. His mouth came down on hers begging her to open for him, demanding she submit to his kiss. She might have started this dance, but he would damned well be leading it.

Friday Features Sharon Ledwith

Friday Features
Cover Reveal
Last Time Keepers and the Dark Secret
by
Sharon Ledwith

Welcome to the cover reveal for Sharon Ledwith’s upcoming new novel,
The Last Time Keepers and the Dark Secret

Book 2 in the The Last Timekeepers series.

This new release fits into Middle Grade, Young Adult, Science Fiction, Fantasy, WWII genres and is an excellent read for everyone ten years old through adulthood. The release date is October 17, 2016 from Mirror World Publishing

Are you ready to see the cover?

Fabulous, right?
Now here’s a brief intro.

Only a true hero can shine the light in humanity’s darkest time.

Fourteen year-old Jordan Jensen always considered himself a team player on and off the field, until the second Timekeeper mission lands him in Amsterdam during World War Two. Pulled into the world of espionage, torture, and intolerance, Jordan and the rest of the Timekeepers have no choice but to stay one step ahead of the Nazis in order to find and protect a mysterious book.

With the help of the Dutch Resistance, an eccentric baron, Nordic runes, and an ancient volume originating from Atlantis, Jordan must learn that it takes true teamwork, trust, and sacrifice to keep time safe from the evils of fascism. Can Jordan find the hero within to conquer the darkness surrounding the Timekeepers? If he doesn’t, then the terrible truth of what the Nazis did will never see the light of day.

EXCERPT

“I wonder what else is down here.” Drake beamed his cell phone across the basement, hitting jars of jams, pickles, and relishes. His stomach growled.

Jordan pulled the cheese from his pocket and handed it to Drake. “Trade you for your phone.”

“Best. Trade. Ever.” Drake passed his phone to Jordan.

Jordan walked over and grabbed a jar of pickles off the dusty shelf. At least they wouldn’t arrive at the baron’s place hungry. He hoped his uncle had managed to stop Amanda’s bleeding. His hand tightened over the jar, the ridges of the lid cutting into his palm. A scrape from behind the shelves made Jordan jump.

“Hello?” he asked, pushing jars aside. He flashed the cell phone into the small, dark area.

“Who ya talking to, Jordan?” Drake asked with his mouth full of cheese.

“Shhh, Drake.” Jordan listened. Hearing nothing, he shrugged and turned back around.

“I thought I heard—” Jordan stopped and pointed the phone at Ravi. His jaw dropped. “A-Are you serious, Sharma?”

Drake spat out his cheese, snorting with laughter.

“Is there a problem?” Ravi asked, tying the bowtie of his tuxedo.

“You look like a penguin with attitude!” Drake slapped his knee.

“Say what you want, but I’m glad we didn’t hit the cleaners on the way to school now,” Ravi replied, pulling down his sleeves, “or else I wouldn’t have these dry clothes.”

Jordan chuckled. Suddenly, he heard a door creak open, followed by heavy footsteps squeaking down the stairs. Panicking, Jordan stuffed Drake’s phone in his track suit jacket’s pocket and waved Drake over by the shelves. Drake slipped behind Jordan just in time, before the small light bulb above the bottom of the stairs clicked on. Jordan swallowed hard. There, staring directly at Ravi was a portly man in a blood-stained apron. Tufts of blond hair sprouted from the sides of his balding head. His brown trousers were pulled up past his waist, making him resemble an evil garden gnome. In one of his hands, he held a huge butcher knife, its blade flecked with blood.

Wielding the knife, the man pointed at Ravi. “Who are you?”

Ravi licked his thick lips nervously. “The name’s Bond. James Bond.”

Wednesday Special Spotlight Exit Signs by Patrice Locke

Wednesday Special Spotlight
Focuses On
Exit Signs

Bumbling through her first crush at age 32, Tracy Price literally falls at the feet of rock star Jesse Elliot. Tracy’s obsession with a mysterious dead writer convinces Jesse that she’s demented. And she believes he wouldn’t recognize the truth in a lineup of Bibles. Their only hope is to stop trying to read each other’s minds and start speaking their own.Exit Signs Cover

Excerpt:

Jesse Elliot raked some strands of his blue-black hair away from his forehead. The hair fell right back onto the shoreline of his face like a wave on a beach. I thought of the cliché movie scene where the action cuts to an agitated ocean to symbolize sex. I cleared my throat, and ordered myself to get a grip.

Instead, I surprised us both by asking him my name. “Tracy Price?”

“Yes.” He confirmed my identity. “It’s nice to meet you.”

He was all-business; I was all over the place.

When he sat next to me I wanted to leap up and run away. Instead, I asked, “How do you like Albuquerque?” Very original, Tracy. What I wondered was, How does it feel to look like you do?

“I like it,” he said, answering both my questions. “I like it so far.”

I felt a surge of power. “I bet. And how long are you staying?” Or, more to the point, would it be too forward of me to sit on your lap?

“I can’t say yet. Maybe six weeks? This was kind of an unexpected trip.” Bingo. Both questions addressed.

This was working. Let me know when you decide about the lap thing. I covered my mouth for a fake cough to clear my head.

He told me he was working on a soundtrack for a movie about a Billy the Kid-like character who time-travels into the future to clear his name.

I nodded. “Billy’s still got charisma. People are drawn to the legend.” Much as I am drawn to you and your amazing high, sharp cheekbones.

“That’s true, isn’t it?” he said.

Yes, it certainly is.

And then, as if he had heard me, he drew his right thumb and forefinger together across the bottom half of his face, calling attention to the sharply carved facial planes. Yes, those cheekbones. Exactly right. Women are supposed to have those facial planes. Don’t worry, though, you’re too handsome to be pretty.

We were silent. I was contemplating his perfection. Maybe he was, too.
