Cold Days (A Limerick)

Sun, where have you gone?

Our sky you do belong.

We’re getting cold,

And I’ve been told,

Humanity doesn’t have long.

What if…

What if…

before you came here, you made a promise

to yourself that this life was going to be the last?

What if you made a promise to yourself

that you will never be – simply Be – ever again?

Do you talk yourself out of going for things you want?

Do you talk yourself out of dreaming a better life for yourself?

Does doubt creep in and tell you that it is impossible for dreams to come true,

so why bother trying?

Does that voice, in your head, make you feel stupid,

by telling you that you are childish to even dream a dream,

to have an idea, to go for it, with everything you have got?

Do you envy people who have dreams

and who put in the effort to improve their experience of life?

Do you resent them?

The only reason you should envy anybody

is because they are living your life better than you are.

There are over seven billion people on this planet, and there is only one you.

That means there is nobody to envy.

This is your time.

There is a reason why clocks have hands,

it is because with every tick and every tock

Father Time is waving you a hello

and a goodbye,

just to remind you that he cannot wait.

However, he is on your side.

He wants you to use him to the best of your ability.

Yes, you will have bad days, but that is because you know what a good day feels like.

It is a sign that, with your will, another good day could be right around the corner.

This is your chance to give yourself permission to dream.

What if this is it?

No second chances.

You want to be a writer?

Write.

You want to be a painter?

Paint.

Dance.

Act.

Play a sport you love.

Draw.

Set the world straight with your efforts.

Don’t have a enough skills?

Train.

Be patient with yourself.

It is okay to change your dream,

dream away!

Who or what is limiting you?

What dream of yours are you holding back from the world?

When you are brave enough to go for a dream,

and stubborn enough not to quit when the path gets treacherous,

you will be setting one of the greatest examples that you,

as a human being,

can set.

Go.

Hold your head up high.

Pick yourself up.

Get used to dusting yourself off.

You are worthy of the best life you have to offer yourself.

Love yourself and give yourself a chance to be happy.

Dream.

Then act upon that dream to the best of your abilities.

If you listen to those who say you cannot,

it is your fault.

You have permission—

simply because you woke up this morning—

to get out of that rut.

Cut those chains and set yourself free, then soar.

Nobody else will do it for you.

But we can remind you,

because we all need reminding every now and again.

A Shame (A Poem)

It’s a shame

You don’t know

I know your name.

It’s a shame

You don’t feel me

In the flame.

It’s a shame

You’re afraid of me

When it’s our game.

It’s a shame

You think I do it

For the fame.

It’s a shame

Since you thought,

We’ve never been the same.

It’s a shame.

You forget,

My name.

Quote

“That was a very happy breakfast, though they didn’t get any of it; and when they went away, leaving comfort behind, I think there were not in all the city four merrier people than the hungry little girls who gave away their breakfasts and contended themselves with bread and milk on Christmas morning.”

Little Women – Louisa M. Alcott

Another Mother (100-Word Non-Fiction)

“That’s where she lived,” said your grandad.

You stared at the house. In the whole neighbourhood, only this one was pink.

“Did she really kill her family?” you asked.

He took the cigarette out of his mouth, nodded.

You carried on walking.

“Why did she do it?”

“I don’t know,” he said. “Sometimes people do crazy things.”

“How did she kill them?”

“Poison. It was a long time ago, though.”

Still, someone who had called themselves a mother and a wife had become a murderer.

And now her house was pink, and a new family – another mother – was living there.

Quote

One day a visitor asked Sen no Rikyu to explain the secret of performing the Japanese tea ceremony. Rikyu answered: “In summer suggest coolness, in winter a feeling of warmth. Lay the charcoal so that it heats the water, and make a pleasing bowl of tea. That is all.” The guest was disappointed, however, and complained, “But everyone knows that.” Rikyu only replied, “Serve tea in this way and perhaps I will become your student.”

Candid (Haiku)

What is more candid,

Than a prepared tree in spring,

Never before seen?

The Tying Breath (A Poem)

It truly is simple,

The relation between life and death:

One is an in, and

The other is an out,

All at the turn of a breath.

A Moment (Haiku)

A moment on earth,

Before me and mine began.

What song my soul sang?

The Unwanted Guest (200-Word Flash Fiction)

He walked in like a cloud.

People stopped talking to stare at him. They shook their heads in disgust.

“Over here,” I said.

He saw me and started over.

“I won’t have the likes of him in my pub,” said John, standing behind the bar. “Not after what he did to my wife.”

“Don’t worry,” I said. “There’ll be no trouble. Right?”

“No trouble.” He sat down, opposite me. “It’s not his time.”

“What do you want to drink?” I asked.

“Bitter, please.”

I looked to John, who had been listening attentively. He had already started to pull the pint.

“I’m not wanted here. Did you see how they all looked at me?”

“They’re still looking,” I said. “I thought you would’ve got used to it by now.”

“Yeah, well… it doesn’t get any easier.”

John came over, carrying the pint of bitter in his chubby grip. He never usually brought the drinks to the tables.

He stood next to my guest and poured the pint over his head.

“That’s for my wife,” he said.

People clapped and cheered, but Death didn’t do a thing. He couldn’t, because it wasn’t time.

Finally, he stood up, dripping.

“See you tomorrow, John.”
