How to Pronounce ALTHOUGH – American English Pronunciation Lesson
Learn how to pronounce the words ALTHOUGH with this American English Pronunciation Lesson.
Definition:Although means in spite of and is pronounced /ɔl ðoʊ/ or all-though.
Sentence:Although this is a very tricky, I know you will get it with a little bit of practice.
Transcript:Hey everyone jennifer from Tarle speech with a very quick question of the week. The question is how do I pronounce the word although that means in spite of. Okay so we have lots of letters spelling this word but very few sounds and I’m going to give you a few tips so this might help you say this word a little easier. We’re going to start with the all this is like the word a-l-l that you probably say all the time, and that you can say typically. When we say the word all you open the mouth and a wide oval tip of the tongue is down back of the tongue is pulled up then you move the tongue tip to behind the back of the top front teeth: all. Okay here’s the trick: you can also make an l by sticking your tongue out of your mouth and touching your teeth. I know it sounds crazy but i’m going to show you.
ALL ALL ALLSo again i’m sticking my tongue out for that L – that is an option. Most people don’t say an L that way but you can and we’re going to do it here for this word. The next sound is that th sound where your tongue is out of your mouth and air is going to move over your tongue so you kind of have to make your tongue into like a u shape.
TH THYou can kind of see that u shape that I have that allows the air to move out, over the top of the tongue, out of the mouth. Your voice box is on and vibrating and moving.
So you can see when I stick my tongue out for the L I only have to move it down away from my teeth for that th.
Then we’re going to end with that long o. Pucker those lips and make it nice and long. Let’s try that all together:
all thoughall though although although although although although althoughAlthough this is very tricky I know you will all get it with a little bit of practice. So give it a try people will definitely notice the difference or if you need more help we have products on google play iTunes and classes at Tarle speech thanks everyone have the best weekend!

Transcript:Hi there it’s jennifer from Tarle Speech with your pronunciation question.
We have four words today:
insect or a bug
incest which is a crime of sexual relations between relatives
innocent not guilty
and
innocent purity
So um let’s take a look at our words now as you can imagine if you say some of these words incorrectly it could be a very embarrassing mistake; so let’s start all of these words are going to start with the same syllable the in in in and to say this sound this beginning part of the word correctly you are going to think about smiling and here’s a tip for you that have trouble saying this short i sound say an e and then just relax your lips a little bit
ih ih ih so an e ih e ih
so in
then you’re going to touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front teeth: in in
All right so we all have that let’s move on to these bottom two words because we have this nice short schwa sound as a syllable
that’s an unstressed uh sound
your mouth is relaxed tongue is just hanging out in the middle of your mouth it’s very short very soft and lower and pitch
in a inna
Then for innocent we are going to end with the word sent s e n t
sent sent sent
So for the s the tip of your tongue either be pointing down or just behind your top teeth and the air is going to continue out we’re going to add that short eh sound and to do that your mouth is open you’re going to be able to see the tip of your tongue between your top and your bottom teeth but your mouth is not very open
and then you’re going to move to that n
air is coming out of your nose the tip of your tongue is behind your top front teeth that is touching
then you’re going to pull the tongue down for that t
sent sent sent in a sent innocent innocent innocent
some of you might be saying I think I heard you say a schwa there actually I did! I made a little bit of a mistake. I am teaching this as sent because I think that’s a little bit easier to remember sometimes when you’re thinking about a word; but ultimately what i’m doing is making this last vowel sound short and unstressed, and so when I do that, oftentimes, that will sound like a short uh.
So whether you say a short e, a short i, or short u does not matter as long as it’s extra short, extra soft, and it is lower in pitch.
Now for sense what we’re going to do is say this whole thing again, but instead of touching the teeth for the ending, you’re going to let your tongue either be right behind your top teeth, or pointed down a little bit, and the air is going to continue out,
in a sense
innocence innocence innocence
Now for insect again we’re going to start with the in then we are going to add sect. To do this start with the s sss, add that e sound, and then the k: tip of the tongue is down towards the bottom of the mouth and the back of the tongue is pulled very high up. Then touch the teeth for the t t
sect sect insect insect insect
For incest I think what happens here is people let the air move out of their mouth. That is the mistake for that s and then they stop it for the t so we have incest incest
So let’s give these all a try:
insect insect insect
incest incest incest
innocent innocent innocent
and innocence in a sense innocence
So i’m actually going to write on here so I don’t get any complaints from all of you that you can actually say sunt or suns at the end with that short u sound. That’s totally fine. But it might be easier for you to think of the short e. And that’s fine as well as long as it is short enough. And again you’ve been watching my videos you know I’m all about it’s all about being clear, you don’t have to be perfect, just be better understood.
So one more time:
insect insect insect
incest incest incest
innocent innocent innocent and
innocence innocence innocence
So give it a try people are going to notice the difference – if you found this helpful – we’d love a like a share and a subscribe; don’t forget to check out our products on google play and itunes and our classes at tarle speech.
Thanks so much everyone!

Transcript:Hello everyone it’s jennifer from Tarle speech with your two for Tuesday two for Tuesday are homophones, those are words that are spelled differently, with different meanings, but they are pronounced exactly the same way.
So yes these words are pronounced exactly the same way!
Let’s look at our words we have birth which means the beginning of something or when a baby is born; and birth a ship’s assigned spot on a dock or a bunk on a train or a ship.
So to say these words correctly we’re going to start with that b sound super easy open your mouth let the air puff out this is where the words get confusing i’ve gotten so many questions about “how do I say an r and then a th” here you go!
So we’re going to start with that er: to do this square tense lips tip of the tongue is either pointing down or flipped back it is not touching your teeth the tip of your tongue never touches your teeth for the er sound the back of your tongue is pulled way high up towards the roof of the mouth.
Now you’re going to have to put the tip of your tongue out of your mouth the tongue is not touching the teeth when it sticks out of the mouth TH you can see my tongue is almost like a cup and that is allowing air to move out of the mouth over the tongue. TH TH TH
So we’re going to move from that er th erth you want to make sure that when you are moving your tongue your tongue does not accidentally hit your teeth because then it’s going to make the sound different so again we’re going to move slowly while we practice this and then as you practice you’ll be able to get faster and it will be easier er th er th erth
and let’s put it all together
birth birth birth birth birth birth birth birth
And now for a sentence The woman gave birth in the upper birth of the ship.
Give it a try people are going to notice the difference if you found this helpful we’d love a like a share and a subscribe check out our products on google play itunes and our classes at Tarle speech thanks everyone.

Transcript:Hi everyone this is Jennifer from Tarle speech with your pronunciation question. Our question today is how do I pronounce the word laboratory, and that is a place for scientific exploration. So quick tip first, if this word is too difficult to say you can just say lab for short and everyone is going to understand you.
So to say the word lab correctly start with the l: tip of the tongue is behind the top front teeth, lips are kind of pulled back, make sure you don’t pucker them. We do not want that. And then we are going to move to that short a sound wide open circle mouth, tip of the tongue down, back of the tongue pulled way high up, and then end with the b, close the lips and the air puffs out of the mouth.
lab lab lab
so again you can stop watching the video if that works for you, but if you want to say the longer word, let’s get into the rest of the lesson.
So we’re going to talk about four syllables lab ra tor ee labra tori laboratory laboratory laboratory
So to do this we’re going to start with the lab, and then we’re going to say ra. To do this for the r sound think of square tense lips, you don’t want to pucker your lips too much, you don’t want to smile too much, you want them square and tense, the tip of your tongue will either be pointing down or flipped back, as long as the back of that tongue is pulled way high up towards the roof of the mouth, and is nice and tense. Then we’re going to relax the mouth and add that short uh sound. That schwa sound labra labra labra then we’re going to move to the tor. To do this touch the tip of the tongue to the back of the top front teeth for the t, the air puffs out, then we’re going to pucker, and then move to the r: or or tore and then smile because it’s all over, you’re finished, and add that nice long e.
Let’s put it all together labra tour e laborator e laboratory laboratory laboratory laboratory laboratory laboratory
And now for a sentence:
The scientist spent many hours in his laboratory.
And if you want to be quicker about it you can say The scientist spent many hours in his lab.
So give it a try people are going to notice the difference if you found this helpful we’d love a like and share and subscribe check out our products on google play and itunes and all of our products all of our classes at Tarle speech. Thanks everyone!

Hey everyone! Jennifer from Tarle speech with your Two for Tuesday!
These are homophones. These words have different spellings different meanings but they are pronounced exactly the same way. And today is a two for two Tuesday with a bonus word thrown in so stay tuned .
All right so our words today are bin and been.
So a bin is a storage container and been is the past participle of to be.
I am teaching the American version of been which is pronounced exactly the same way as the word bin. So to say these two words correctly we’re going to start with a b put your lips together and open them up and the air puffs out. Next we’re going to move to that short i. You can see my mouth is not tensed. My lips are relaxed and in doing that my mouth is just slightly open.
My tongue is high in my mouth. It’s behind the top front teeth and it’s just relaxed and it is flat.
If you confuse this vowel with the long e all you need to do is smile for that e in e and then relax your lips.
You can see when I relax my lips my tongue just pops down a tiny bit and then I’m able to say that short i and with the end n sound nnn. To do this you touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front teeth air moves out of your nose.
So again these two words pronounce the same in American English bin and been.
Now here’s your bonus word – bean. And a bean is a small food and we would say b eeee n
with that long e.
So we say bin differently than bean.
And yes this word gets a little bit confusing for our uh American English learners because we have the two vowels together which typically we pronounce as a long vowel.
But in this case we do the short i instead. So again we have bin been and bean bin been been bean bean bean.
And now for your sentence: I’ve been to the bin to buy some beans.
Give it a try people are going to notice the difference! If you found this helpful we’d love a like a share and a subscribe. If you need more help we have products on google play and class options at Tarle speech thanks everyone have a great week!

Hello! Jennifer from Tarle Speech with your Two for Tuesday!
Our words today are earn – to obtain money
and urn – a tall round vase with a base and a lid.
So earn and urn are homophones – homophones are two words that are spelled differently and have different meanings but they are pronounced exactly the same way. So these words are pronounced exactly the same way.
So to say these words correctly we only have two little sounds we’re going to start with the er sound. The American er I like to describe as long and strong. You can make that with square tensed lips you do not want to pucker. If you pucker it’ll sound more like a w. So square tense lips and the tip of your tongue can either be pointed down or flipped back. It never touches your teeth for the r sounds and the back of your tongue is going to be pulled up high towards the roof of your mouth. er er er
Now you need to move the tip of your tongue to the back of the top front teeth and the air is going to shift from coming out of your mouth for the er to out of your nose for the er.
er n earn
earn earn earn earn earn earn earn
You need to earn more money in order to afford to buy the expensive urn.
Give it a try I hope people notice the difference!
