Transcript:

Hey everyone it is Jennifer with Tarle speech and your two for Tuesday homophone lesson. Homophones are words with different spellings, different meanings, but they are pronounced exactly the same way.

We have two words today:
thrown a ceremonial chair and
thrown to propel with force

So to say these words correctly we are going to start with that t h sound th. Your tongue comes out of your mouth for the sound and you need to have space between your teeth and your tongue so the air can move over your tongue and out of your mouth. I tell people not to touch their teeth with their tongue even though sometimes they can touch slightly on the sides. Just because if you touch the front teeth, you close the ability for the air to come out, and then it sounds like t and we don’t want that we want a th th

You can see my tongue sort of makes a little cup. th th th

Then from there we are going to move to that r sound. To do this the tip of your tongue is inside of your mouth and it’s either pointed down or flipped back. My tip is for this take your time this is a super difficult sound combination so practice moving slowly let’s try it together. thr thr thr

After you get good at that you can go a little bit faster. But again my tip is – take your time at first and really get the feel for that sound.

Next we’re going to move to that long o and to do this your mouth opens wide and then it puckers. Your tongue tip will be down low and then it’ll move to about the middle of the mouth. And then end by touching the tip of the tongue to the back of the top front teeth nor that n, air moves out of your nose. Let’s put it all together and go slowly at first

And now for a sentence;

How to Pronounce CHRISTIAN & CHRISTIANITY – American English Pronunciation

Transcript:

Hi everyone merry Christmas! It is jennifer and Claire from Tarle Speech and we are here with your Christmas lesson. Since we are celebrating baby Jesus’s birthday today our words today are Jesus Christ and that is the central figure of christianity; and Christmas the celebration of Jesus’s birth.

So show us those words Claire.

Okay so we have Jesus. Let’s start with that. So to say Jesus we are going to start with that j sound j. And to do this you’re going to touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front teeth and then pull it back quickly for that j j j sound. Next move to that long e tongue is high and flat smile and hold that long e je. Next we’re going to move to the z sound yes the z spelled with an s; but we’re going to pronounce a z here. And to do that the tip of your tongue is going to be pointed slightly down or just behind the top front teeth. It is not touching. Your voice box is on and moving. Then we’re going to move to that short uh. Just relaxed mouth and then end with an s. Again tip of the tongue is down or behind the top front teeth it is not touching.

Let’s put it all together:

jesus jesus jesus
jesus jesus jesus

And now for the next two words can you hold this up to the side maybe over here. Let’s see how we’re gonna do that? Okay perfect! Okay this gets confusing because the word Christ is pronounced with a long I and Christmas is pronounced with a short i and no t. That t is silent. So to say Christ and Christmas we’re going to start with that kr and to do that tip of your tongue is down back of your tongue is pulled high up for that k. Keep your tongue there. Square tense lips and then say that R.

For the long i open mouth moves to a smile. For the short i relaxed mouth mouth is just slightly open. Tip of your tongue will just be peeking out below your top teeth. Then we’re going to move to the s for both of those tip of the tongue is either down or behind the top front teeth. Sorry about that. And the air is going to be moving so we have cry and chris. Now for the s t here you know how to say the s, then what you’re going to do is just touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front teeth for that t. Christ Christ Christ. Try that second part Christ Christ one more time Christ.

And then for Christmas, after you say that s, new syllable and then you’re just going to end with mus. Lips together for that m, open relaxed mouth for that uh, and then you know the drill for the s.

Let’s put it all together chris mus chris muss
christmas christmas christmas
christmas christmas christmas

And let’s try those words one more time Jesus Christ Christmas

Try them all Jesus Christ Christmas.

And we have another special guest star today. Who do we have Claire? Show them. We brought baby Jesus from our manger because we are celebrating Jesus’s birthday. And there he is! So merry Christmas to you all, happy birthday baby Jesus, and may you all have a wonderful day!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

bye!

How to Pronounce WRESTLE, WRESTLER, WRESTLING – American English Pronunciation Lesson

Learn to pronounce the words wrestle, wrestler, and wrestling with this American English Pronunciation Lesson.

Definitions:

WRESTLE means a grappling sport or to struggle with a decision.

Pronunciation:

RES-UL /ˈrɛsəl/

RES-LER or RES-UH-LING /ˈrɛslər/ or /ˈrɛsələr/

RES-LING or RES-UH-LING /ˈrɛslɪŋ/ or /ˈrɛsəlɪŋ/

Sentence:

Do not wrestle your brother on the living room floor. This is not a wrestling ring and you are not a wrestler.

Transcript:

Hello everyone it is Jennifer from Tarle Speech.

Not a super exciting background, not the best
lighting, but my video that I am supposed

to post, the sound did not work.

My microphone is broken so I’m using my computer
to record this.

So thanks for your understanding.

Our words today are wrestle which is a grappling
sport or it can also mean that you’re struggling

with something and trying to decide.

So our word today has a lot of silent letters.

We have a silent w and we have a silent t
here and of course the e at the end is silent

as well.

So to say this word correctly we are going
to start with the r sound er.

And to do this, if you watch my videos: square
tense lips, tip of your tongue is either pointed

down or flipped back, back of the tongue is
pulled high up.

It really just depends on how you make that
sound but the key is do not touch your teeth

for the r sound; and do not allow your tongue
to move.

R . Next we’re going to move to that short
e sound and to do that you can see the tip

of my tongue is just between my top and bottom
teeth- peeking out there.

It’s not touching anywhere.

My lips and my mouth are relatively relaxed.

Then I’m going to move to that s sound.

ssss Tip of the tongue is either down and
the is down low in the mouth or it is behind

the top teeth again it is not touching the
teeth.

sssss Let’s put that first part together res
res res.

Then you’re going to move to syllable two
which is ul ul and for that we’re just going

to have that short uh sound and we’re then
going to move to the l by touching the tip

of the tongue to the back of the top front
teeth.

Specifically where the teeth end and the skin
on the roof of the mouth begins.

Let’s say it all together
res ul

res ul
wrestle wrestle wrestle

Now what happens when we add this er or this
ing?

So for this ler part- touch the tip of your
tongue to the back of your top front teeth

and then either pull the tongue down or flip
the tip of the tongue back for that er

ler
ler

ler
wrestler

wrestler
wrestler wrestler wrestler

And then for wrestling, start with that l
touch the tip of the tongue to the back of

the top front teeth, add that short ih sound
by relaxing your mouth and the tongue is going

to pop down a little bit behind the top front
teeth.

It’s not touching then keep that tongue moving
down to the bottom of the mouth.

Tip of the tongue really low for that ng sound
– two letters for the ng – one sound.

Tip of the tongue is down back of the tongue
is pulled up

ing
ing

ing
ling

ling
ling

wrestling wrestling
wrestling wrestling wrestling

So for wrestler you have another option.

You can also add the schwa sound so you can
say two beats rus ler or three beats res uh

ler wrestler wrestler

You can also add a schwa for the last word
and you can say two beats for res ling or

three beats for res uh ling wrestling wrestling

So let’s give those all a try again
wrestle wrestle wrestle

wrestler wrestler wrestler

wrestling wrestling wrestling

Don’t wrestle your brother on the living room
floor!

This is not a wrestling ring and you are not
a wrestler.

So give it a try I know people are going to
notice the difference.

Short u-D-short i-SH-short u-N

uh-di-shun

Sentence:

Transcript:

Hi everyone it’s Jennifer from Tarle speech with your two for Tuesday!

These are homophones: two words that are spelled differently, with different meanings, that are pronounced exactly the same way. So same pronunciation for both of these words. So we have two words:
addition to add something and
addition a version

So to say these words correctly we’re going to think about three beats UH DIH SHUN. UH DIH SHUN.

I actually spelled this though, and I split the syllables a little differently, and wrote the word dish, because I know sometimes having a real word helps some of you. So you can think of that as well.

So so to say this word correctly, let’s start with the short, unstressed, uh, the schwa. Just open your mouth, let the air puff out for that uh.

Next move to the dish and to do that, touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front teeth. And then you’re going to relax your mouth for that short ih and then pucker for the sh. SHHHH And then end with the un. To do that, relaxed mouth, and then touch the tip of the tongue to the back of the top front teeth for that n, air moves out of the nose.

Let’s put it all together a dish un

RANT: R-short a-N-T or /rænt/

Sentence:

Don’t rant about the high rent.

The runt of the litter is the cutest pup.

Transcript:

Hi everyone it is Jennifer from Tarle speech with your question of the week. Our question today is how do I say the word
rest to relax
rust a reddish flaking coating on iron and steel
rent a regular payment for property
runt the smallest animal in a litter and
rant to speak loudly in an impassioned way

All right so let’s give these words a look and jump right in. Let’s start with this r sound. Okay! Most of my students have to work on this sound and that’s okay. Let’s do a little bit of a deeper dive here today. To say the r sound in english the tongue never touches the teeth. You are not going to tap the teeth with your tongue. You’re not going to touch the teeth with your tongue. It is just going to be hanging out in your mouth. Your tongue tip is either pointed down or you can flip it back. The key is again, do not touch your teeth with the tip of your tongue. Do not touch it. The back of your tongue will be pulled up very high towards the roof of your mouth.

If you tend to say a w try pulling your lips back and smiling a little bit more. So instead of saying pull your lips back,
I always say try to think of making your lips square and tense and that helps a lot of people. All right! So we have that r out of the way.

Now let’s look at these endings we have the ST and the NT.

What’s the difference here? Let’s start with that s t to say an s most of my students can do this. You are going to have the tip of your tongue pointed down or just going to be behind your top teeth and the air is going to move out of your mouth. What you’re going to do next is quickly touch the tip of your tongue to the back of your top front teeth for that t.

And after you touch again, you’re going to pull it down rather quickly. So tongue is back for the s or pointed down.

All right and then for that nt

The difference here is your tongue starts by touching the back of your top front teeth for that n – air is moving out of your nose. Then as you pull your tongue down and away to make that t sound, air must puff out of your mouth.

All right, what about these vowels. Let’s take a look at those. For the short EH sound in rest and rent, your mouth is going to be relaxed and slightly open. The tip of your tongue will just be peeking out between your top and your bottom teeth.
My tongue is relatively flat and it’s in the middle of my mouth. For uh the short uh sound just going to have a super relaxed mouth, uh, and my tongue pops down a little bit from that eh.

So again for that eh sound I am holding my mouth just slightly open and then for the uh it’s completely relaxed and my mouth is just relaxed and open.

Now for the ah in rant you’re going to open your mouth very wide. Tip of the tongue is going to be very low, back of the tongue is going to be pulled up, mouth, think of being in an open wide circle shape. AH AH

So again, we have EH UH AH EH UH AH

Let’s put these all together. We have:

rest rest rest rest
rent rent
runt runt and
rant rant

Let’s try them a little faster.
rest rust
rent runt rant
rest rest
rent runt rant

And now for a few sentences:
He needed to rest after working to remove the rust from the iron fence.
Don’t rant about the high rent.
The runt of the litter is the cutest pup.

So give it a try I know people are going to notice the difference. If you found this helpful, we would love it if you shared us with your friends. If you need help you can check out our products and our classes at Tarle Speech.
