What is a voiced sound?

A voiced sound is category of consonant sounds made while the vocal cords vibrate.

All vowels in English are voiced, to feel this voicing, touch your throat and say AAAAH.  Feel that movement in your neck?  That is voicing.

Consonants can be either voiced or voiceless.  Some consonant sounds are made with the lips and tongue doing exactly the same thing but the voice is OFF or ON (vibrating).  This leads to many mistakes since the sounds look the same and sound similar.  Look at the following sound pairs that are made in the same manner with the tongue and lips but not the voicing.  Touch your throat as you say each sound to feel the difference.

Voiceless
Voiced

P
B

T
D

K
G

F
V

S
Z

CH
J

Most ESL speakers really have a difficult time with voicing at the end of words.  Which can lead to misunderstanding.  For example, if you mean“rise” and you don’t use your voice, it sounds like “rice”.   If you mean“crab” and you don’t use your voice, it sounds like “crap”.  If you mean“as” and you don’t use your voice, it sounds like “ass”.

How to say DOUBTER and DAUGHTER

Today’s question is from a new YouTube subscriber:

“Hi Jennifer, I would love that please you mention the difference in the pronunciation of Daughter and Doubter.”

DAUGHTER has 4 sounds:  D-OH-T-ER

DOUBTER has 4 sounds:  D-OW-T-ER

The difference in the words is the vowel.

The OH, the short o sound, is made with a wide open oval mouth.

The OW is long and is made by moving your mouth from wide open circle to a pucker.

Welcome to the channel and thanks for the question.

How to say QUESTION

The question today comes from a YouTube Subscriber:  “How do you say question?”

Great question!

This is actually an easy word to pronounce, but the spelling makes it seem confusing.  To say question focus on each syllable:  kwes and chin.

Kwes-chin.

QU is a common spelling pattern and is typically pronounced KW.

How do I pronounce the letters QU?

The letters QU are used together in many words.  Pronounce this two letter combination as KW.  This is the case in words like quit, queen, quiz, query, quick, quarter, and question.

As always, there is an exception.  QU can be pronounced K like in the word conquer.
