Facebook Chat Thursday, May 8th

Facebook Chat | The Silver PenBreast Cancer Information & Facts

Facebook Chat on Thursday, May 8th

I’m super excited to announce that on May 8th, I will be hosting my first-ever Facebook chat. I thought that it would be a fun way for us all to connect directly, especially since many of you live far away from my corner of the world, in different states and even different countries!

A Facebook chat is a perfect way for us to connect and chat with each other, even if we can’t be face to face. This is the place for you to ask questions, share stories from your own cancer experience, and learn more about my book (if you’d like), The Silver Lining. I’d really love to get to know more of you and hope you can join me.

It will be from 12-1 pm PST/3-4 EST.

Participation is easy!  Just click here for more information on the event: https://www.facebook.com/events/697764696953534

Santa Barbara Magazine Spring 2014

So incredibly honored and excited to have The Silver Lining book featured in Santa Barbara Magazine. Santa Barbara magazine happens to be my favorite magazine. In fact, it was my favorite magazine even before I moved to Santa Barbara. Reading it always lifts my spirits and inspires me. And to add (buttercream) icing on the cake, being able to share the book is a beautiful Silver Lining! Enjoy the issue!

The Silver Lining Book: Upcoming Event in Santa Barbara

Sansum Clinic | The Silver PenBreast Cancer Information & Facts

The Silver Lining Book: Upcoming Event in Santa Barbara

Though I am in San Francisco (my home away from home, a place that is near and dear to my heart!) for book events this week, I’m excited to tell you that there are lots of fun events coming up in Santa Barbara that will be great fun!

First off is an event with the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara and Sansum Clinic, where my oncologist and internist work.  I received (& continue to receive, actually!) the most amazing and inspiring care there. And truth be told, I am on the cover of their Good Health magazine with both of my amazing doctors. GULP.  I still can’t believe it. The ultimate Silver Lining is for me to be able to be a cheerleader for the incredible care that I received  in Santa Barbara.

The mission of Sansum is to provide an excellent healthcare experience, recognizing our first priority is the patients we serve. As a premier integrated delivery system, their vision is to provide high-value healthcare to the communities they serve, managing the population’s healthcare needs, while also creating a model of care that will thrive in California’s rapidly changing healthcare arena.

The values that guide them are:

CompassionAccountabilityRespectExcellenceStewardship

Doesn’t get much better than that, right?  Anyway, if you’d like to come, please RSVP to askew@sansumclinic.org. Hope to see you there!

Reduced-fee and Free Breast Cancer Screening

Free Resources | The Silver PenBreast Cancer Diagnosis

Reduced-fee and Free Breast Cancer Screening

On a radio show last week in Chicago, I was asked about reduced-fee or free resources for breast and cervical cancer screenings. It occurred to me that I knew about them but hadn’t yet posted the information. Whoopsie!

Regular check-ups (that include screening) are so very important!  The primary goal of screening is for early detection.  There are of course many varying (and polarizing!) views on screening.  I happen to believe in screening. Perhaps one day, I’ll lay out the arguments of the people who are pro-screening and against-screening.  But in the meantime, here are the resources that I know of!

CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) provides access to breast and cervical cancer screening services to under-served women in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, 5 U.S. territories, and 11 tribes. These services include clinical breast examinations, mammograms, pap tests, pelvic examinations, human papillomavirus (HPV) tests, diagnostic testing if results are abnormal, and referrals to treatment. To find a screening location near you, use the interactive map found on their website at www.cdc.gov/cancer/nbccedp/index.htm

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) partners with medical facilities across the country to provide free mammograms and diagnostic breast care services to under-served women through the NBCF National Mammography Program. In addition, the NBCF National Mammography Program requires that medical facilities within their network have the capacity to continue treatment after an abnormal finding or diagnosis of breast cancer. For more information, check out their website at www.nationalbreastcancer.org/national-mammography-program

Visit the Susan G. Komen Affiliates page find an affiliate group in your area. Each local group has its own website with important information, like a local breast health resource guide. The Susan G. Komen group funds breast cancer education, screening and treatment projects for those who need it most.

This information will remain permanently available on the “Resources” section of my blog. If you know of any other free or reduced-fee services for breast and cervical cancer screenings, please let me know in the “Comments” section or by emailing me at (add email) and I will update the resource page accordingly.

Happy Earth Day 2014!

Earth Day1Inspired Living & Celebrating Life

Happy Earth Day!

Today, April 22, marks the anniversary of what many consider the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. The idea for Earth Day came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill right here in my hometown of Santa Barbara, California.  On January 28, 1969 an oil platform six miles off of Santa Barbara’s coast ruptured, sending 80,000 to 100,000 barrels of crude oil into the Santa Barbara Channel over the next 10 days – an image that gives me goosebumps, not the good kind. The oil spread from Goleta to Ventura, killing thousands of sea birds, as well as dolphins, elephant seals, and sea lions.

Where on earth is the Silver Lining, you ask? Well as a result of this catastrophe, the first Earth Day was created, which led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean AirClean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. “It was a gamble,” Gaylord recalled, “but it worked.”

Earth Day | The Silver Pen

Earth Day is now a globally celebrated holiday that is intended to raise awareness about a wide range of environmental issues and problems, and to inspire people to take personal action to address them.

Below are some accessible – easy, even – that you can do beginning today to participate in Earth Day:

Buy locally grown produce in season. Consider buying organically grown for the “Dirty Dozen” produce items with the most pesticide exposure.Use a cloth instead of a paper towel for spills.Pack leftovers and lunches in reusable containers or recyclable foil.Scrape plates rather than rinse before loading them into the dishwasher. This not only saves water but keeps grease and oily substances from going down your drain, a potential plumbing issue and wastewater treatment problem.Choose nontoxic, naturally derived cleaning products, which are proven effective but won’t cause long term damage to the Earth. I especially like the Shaklee products.Meat free day(s). Many people have signed onto the Meatless Monday movement which is great because reducing (eliminating, even) meat consumption conserves fresh water, saves topsoil, and even reduces air pollution! Wouldn’t it be great if this movement could evolve into meatless weeks and then months and then years and then…ever?Plant a tree!  Did you know that over a 50-year lifetime, a tree generates $31,250 worth of oxygen, provides $62,000 worth of air pollution control, recycles $37,500 worth of water, and controls $31,250 worth of soil erosion. It also provides shade that keeps homes and cities cooler! How are those for Silver Linings?Use organic fertilizer. We just started doing this and I feel so much better already.Return hangers and plastic bags to the dry cleaner. When I first started doing this, our dry cleaner was a little surprised and then grateful.Use cloth tote bags for shopping. I recommend keeping them in the back of your car so you can remember them. The key is REMEMBERING that they are there….BEFORE you get into the checkout line! I can’t tell you how many times I have irk’d the supermarket line I’m in because I have to run out to the car to get my bags.

I’d love for you to add to the list. What do you do for Earth Day?  Here are some other inspiring images to help us appreciate our beautiful Mother Earth.

How Wonderful It Is!

The Silver Pen QuoteInspirational Picture Quotes About Life

How wonderful it is to be HOME!  After 4 days and 13 appearances in Chicago, I’m wiped out beyond belief (not to mention a bit buried in email-land!). So, I’m taking today and tomorrow to rest and to return (many of your!) emails.  Thank you for your patience with me! I’ve really missed writing the blog everyday and have tons of notes in my journal of things to write about.  Look so forward to getting back to it next week!  In the meantime, please enjoy this Anne Frank quote.
