Grace

“I know a noble heart that beats
For one it loves how "wildly well!"
I only know for whom it beats;
   But I must never tell!
     Never tell!
Hush! hark! how Echo soft repeats,--
     Ah! never tell!”

Why Are You an Extrovert?

Thesame question can be asked inversely; why are you an introvert? Extroversion and introversion are two personality types that have very serious role to play in how our social systems and cultural practices are structured. Every society has norms that validate either one or both these types. In her phenomenal work, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking Susan Cain takes a step further in analyzing the two personality types. In ‘Part Two’ of the book titled; “Your b...

The Way Back: A Film Review

Policeman: “Welcome to India. Paper-passport please.” Janusz, (smiling), “We don’t have any.”
AdolfHitler sent his prisoners to concentration camps, while his Russian counterpart Joseph Stalin sent away the ‘enemies of his state’ to Siberia to rot and die. ‘The Way Back’ is a drama about how a group of prisoners escaped from a Siberian Gulag camp. Most of them were arrested and sent away for charges that have nothing to do with what they did in person to the state, but what the state thought a...

How Important are Fallacies?

Foryou and me, the ordinary human being, the word “fallacy” sounds only an academic gimmick. We do not find any significance to them in our personal lives. Still, we often wonder, why we are bombarded with fallacies and arguments in our critical thinking course, for first semester graduation. What practical use do fallacies entail?
Image Courtesy: GoogleAccording to Merriam-Webster, Fallacy means, “deceptive appearance”. In most of my classes, I tell students, learning about ‘fallacies’...

Lessons from Thunderbolt

Aheavy thunderstorm hit my locality, this morning (15 September 2013). It was a Sunday morning.
I had, after a long time, planned to take an early shot at writing. The previous night I planned, to post an article in TIC early in the next morning. I hadn’t posted the Saturday Flick , this Saturday, instead there was another article that needed attention—“The Onam Paradox”. This article was about Onam, the agricultural festival in Kerala, starting from 15 September, for three days.
Sometimes, st...

The Onam Paradox

You don’t find stories, stories find you. Some stories find ways to reach you, as comics or movies. One such story that fascinated me in my childhood was Mahabali and Vamana. King Mahabali ruled Keralaputra, today’s Kerala. Vamana was an avatar of Lord Vishnu, who came to Keralaputra and decimated the power of Mahabali, by sending him to the underworld called Pataal.
Image Courtesy: GoogleMahabali was, in fact, a ‘good guy’. He led Keralaputra, through what could be called, its golden age. Po...
