THE MILANESE STARS HAS A COVER
I received my book cover for THE MILANESE STARS and I have a book release date of 25th June 2018.
You might remember me talking about revising and resubmitting a project a while back, almost a year ago. And this is the project I was talking about. Touchpoint Press released the cover this week and I couldn’t be happier.
For this book, I’ve planned a whole month of goodies prior to book launch. If you’d like to be part of THE MILANESE STARS ARC TEAM, then you can fill in this Google form. Along with a Free Advance Reader Copy, I’ll send you The Milanese Stars Cookbook with Vita’s famous Italian recipes. Or you can email me at contact@pamelaqfernandes.com.
For those wondering this is a romantic heist and a clean read. And you guessed it, they’re stealing pink diamonds. Before your brush this book off, take a look at some real life heists of this century which has left investigators scratching their heads.
Here’s the blurb:
The Milanese stars are missing from the famous Buccatino boutique. When American insurance investigator, Samuel Keane is called to liaison with the Polizia, he finds the whole heist odd. In the first place, the Milanese stars, a set of five pink diamonds are not listed in the inventory of stolen items and what’s even worse, none of the surrounding owners witnessed anything of significance while the burglary took place.
As Samuel digs further into the history of the stars, he encounters Vita’s friends and physically challenged sister are all connected to them. The more Samuel investigates, the more dangers he and Vita face. What will he do when he finds out the heist if the decade it’s not about stealing pink diamonds, it’s about settling the score.
THE MILANESE STARS will be released in all bookstores on 25th June . I’m super excited about this project because its got a wide cast of characters and is different from my usual romantic suspense. This one is light, airy and cheerful and is set in the grand old city of Milan.

Stay tuned for more, because I have lots of goodies and things to share about my latest release. Tell me what you think about the cover? Or the blurb? I’d leave to hear your feedback. See you soon.

23 How to Raise Children of Character
Practice what you preach, but also preach what you practice: Thomas Lickona on raising children of character.

Thomas Lickona
Thomas Lickona, Ph.D., is a psychologist and educator who has been hailed as “the father of modern character education.” A professor of education emeritus at State University of New York, Cortland, he is the founding director of his university’s Center for the 4th and 5th Rs (Respect and Responsibility) and author of nine books on moral development and character education, including Raising Good Children, Educating for Character, Character Matters, Sex, Love, and You, and How to Raise Kind Kids (April 2018).
He is on the Advisory Board of the Catholic Education Resource Center. He has been a guest on national media such as “Good Morning America,” “Larry King Live Radio,” “Focus on the Family,” and National Public Radio. Visit his web site here.
When I read this post by Thomas Lickona on Raising children of character, I knew I wanted him to talk to parents listening to our show. And to my utter amazement, he agreed. This podcast has many tips where Thomas shares his own wisdom about raising Christian children.

Raising Children of Character
In this episode, I talk to Thomas about raising children of character.
He speaks about:
-Why character development is so important for kids?
-How kids need and appreciate discipline.
-How children learn by example and repetition.
-How we need to remember we’re raising future adults
-How fostering spiritual development is the best gift we can give our children.

22 Five Steps to Holiness by Padre Pio
Prayer is the best weapon we have; it is the key to God’s heart. You must speak to Jesus not only with your lips, but with your heart. In fact on certain occasions you should only speak to Him with your heart. Padre Pio
Charles Johnston is a father and husband in Phoenix, Arizona. His conversion journey has taken years, as he felt God pulling him toward His Church but he resisted until he couldn’t take it anymore. He gave in and fell in love with His Church. He blogs for ‘Now that I’m catholic.wordpress.com’. In this episode, I talk to Charles, about the Apostle Peter, his ministry and transformation from a fisherman to fisher of men.
In this episode, I talk to Charles about St. Padre Pio.
He speaks about:
-Padre Pio’s many spiritual gifts including his stigmata, ability to read people and bilocation.
-How Padre Pio remained humble and obedient despite opposition.
-The Five Steps of Holiness by Padre Pio
-Why Christians should pray.
Padre Pio is one of the most popular priests who became a saint in recent church history. His mysticism, stigmata and other spiritual gifts drew many people to him.
Here are some of his most famous quotes.
-“The life of a Christian is nothing but a perpetual struggle against self; there is no flowering of the soul to the beauty of its perfection except at the price of pain.”
-“Have courage and do not fear the assaults of the Devil. Remember this forever; it is a healthy sign if the devil shouts and roars around your conscience, since this shows that he is not inside your will.”
-Pray, hope, and don’t worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer.
-My past, O Lord, to Your mercy; my present, to Your love; my future to Your providence.
-Joy, with peace, is the sister of charity. Serve the Lord with laughter.

Q 22 Tax Season for Doctors
“Tax season is crazy,” says Dr. SJ. “I earn from three different hospitals, I recently moved and my kids just started going to school. I’ve tried to hire a CA but they’re too quick to jump on any large corpus and I don’t trust them. Any advice?”
![]()
Tax Season: Doctors
I didn’t realize tax season was so taxing because of the varied tax times everyone has for filing. By and large I think most people are done filing taxes whether that’s India or the US and if you’re worried about what you’re paying now it’s too late.
Before I hand out any advice, let me put it out there. I’m no tax maverick. I have zero training and everything I know about filing taxes is from experience. But I’ll tell you what I know and apply to my gig just so your life can be a little easy.
Plan for Next Year
I can’t stress how important it is to plan before you earn. Forget the minutiae, make a general plan before your paycheck comes in at the end of this month. You have a rough idea about how much you will make for a year. So plan ahead, fix the dates on your calendar, dates for review, dates to file taxes, file returns, bill payments and audits. That way you don’t miss any deadlines. Also plan how much you will save for retirement, investments, children’s school and vacations planned. Do it now! Alert your bank if you want automatic deductions or if you have a portfolio. Talk to your bank.
Seek Professional Advice
When it came to hiring a CA I realized just as Dr. S.J did, that they don’t have your best interest at heart. Not all but some. They have financial interests and I’m quite wary of sharing any of these details with anyone. So I sought professional advice and learned what I had to do.
Yes I paid to learn this stuff because I intended to do it myself and do it faster and better. I hate having to depend on a CA to get my own books fixed. Send email after email, set up an appointment, go to them, then wait for them to do the job, if they don’t do it, then remind them. So I made the investment to learn.
For anyone who knows me also knows I’m a dud in maths. I hate mathematics but I can count money.

21 Building Bridges to Modern Samaritan Women
In John 4, where Jesus touches the Samaritan woman, he engages her, he’s accepting and he’s offering her hope. That is the beginning step for us as Christians to walk into people’s lives, be accepting and offer hope when normally it’s our human nature to tuck our purse and turn the other way. Heather Morse

Building Bridges to Modern Samaritan Women

Heather Morse
Heather Morse has been doing outreach into the sex industry since 2008. She has also been Human Trafficking Advocate at a women’s residential program which served women who were starting a new life after face life-controlling issues, such as addiction, homelessness and prostitution. She continues to address the issue of human trafficking through speaking -engagements and awareness events.
In this episode, I talk to Heather Morse about a ministry in human trafficking.
She speaks about:
-Why Christians need to build bridges to the vulnerable Samaritan women of society.
-What steps you can take to prevent and help victims of human trafficking in your own local community?
-What are the visible signs of this happening that you should look for.
-How can you begin a ministry in this area.
-How sharing the gospel and loving people can make a huge difference in people’s lives.
She shares a few tips and statistics about how to get involved in this area and how stronger communities will help prevent this from happening.
20.9 million people are victims of human trafficking. That is a staggering number of people who are denied freedom and dignity.
Here’s the podcast:
Here are links to organizations Heather talks about in the podcast.
The Polaris project: National Human Trafficking Hotline 1 (888) 373-7888
Since we’ve just celebrated Divine Mercy Sunday, consider extending compassion to these vulnerable women as well. See how you can build bridges by simply sharing the gospel, volunteering and learning about people in your own community.
If you see something, say something! That maybe someone’s daughter, sister, brother or child and as a Christian we can’t simply look the other way.

Tips for Christian Ministry inHuman Trafficking
This is a difficult ministry. Even if you’re not called to it, consider working with rehab homes, shelters and health centers to help and train these victims as they re-enter society. A better community is the answer, while you fervently pray for all those who do work in some of these dark areas like Heather does.
Please share this podcast so that more people can become aware and take charge of what’s happening in their own communities.

Query Success: Painting Kuwait Violet
My winning query. That’s what I said I would share with you the next time after my cover reveal of Painting Kuwait Violet.

Query Success
I used to be super scared of writing queries and during my initial years obsessively went over Chucks’s successful queries on Writer’s Digest. I even submitted my query to agentquery where I did have some wonderful basic feedback.
This was my old query.
Dear Mr X,
I am seeking representation for Painting Kuwait Violet. It’s multicultural, women’s fiction set in Kuwait, six years after the Gulf War. Its complete at 73,000 words.
When Sabah Dashti, the Kuwaiti matriarch welcomes her new Indian maid, Violet, she asks herself what the hell was she thinking? Violet is young, pretty and full of spunk. Can she tell her that nine of her previous maids are absconding? That five of them were found pregnant? Or that the police think she’s running a prostitution ring? And she is nowhere close to finding out the gawad whose responsible.
Violet has no choice. Drowning in debt and with few job prospects, she travels to the oil rich nation to find that money isn’t everything. Her colleagues are assaulted, thrown out of moving cars or performing ‘favors.’ Violet is desperate to escape. Despite their differences, both Sabah and Violet are hungry for success, together they build a thriving business. The only question is, will Violet escape and when the times comes will Sabah let her?
I’m an Indian, born and raised in Kuwait and know people who’ve worked in Kuwaiti homes. My writing credentials include a novella published by Indireads titled Seoulmates, several short stories in anthologies like ‘Story for my Valentine’ and ‘Quantum Fairy Tales.’Thank you for your time.
Regards,
Pamela Q Fernandes
It was during a #DVpit contest on twitter that Kaelan, an Acquisitions editor with Multifarious press, was giving out free query critiques and I was one of the first five or ten to submit.
Within a day, she actually edited and polished my query. I submitted it to the #DVpit contest agents who liked my pitch.
Here’s the rewritten query:
Dear Ms. Sharon,
I’m querying you because you liked the following pitch on DVpit.
(#WF #DVpit Kuwait after Gulf War 1. Two women. an Indian maid & her divorced, Kuwaiti boss-woman have to stop a woman-hating, killer.)
PAINTING KUWAIT VIOLET is a mysterious, multicultural women’s fiction of 69,000 words. It is set in Kuwait, six years after the Gulf War, 1996.
Sabah Dashti, the Kuwaiti matriarch has a new maid. But can she tell pretty, spunky, Violet the truth? That nine of Sabah’s previous maids have absconded? That five of them were found pregnant? Or that the police think she’s running a prostitution ring? That Sabah has no idea who is responsible?
Even if Violet knew, she has no choice. Drowning in debt with few job prospects, she travels to oil-rich Kuwait to find that money isn’t everything. Her colleagues are assaulted, thrown from moving cars or performing ‘favors.’ Violet is desperate to escape because Sabah can’t be trusted. She’s a Kuwaiti woman with secrets.
Despite their difference, both Sabah and Violet are hungry for success as it will give them a chance to live life on their own terms. Together they build a thriving business. But a woman hating, killer has set eyes on them and will not let them succeed at any cost.
Readers of the book, Rooftops of Tehran may enjoy my book.
PAINTING KUWAIT VIOLET underlines the grim realities faced by Asian maids in Middle Eastern homes. It also highlights the plight of Kuwaiti women as they struggle within the traditional constraints of their conservative society. The social issues of polygamy, blood money, and abuse, all hushed up in the Middle East may appeal to the feminist audience, especially those who are aware of the differences between the freedoms enjoyed by western women compared to the injustices of their Middle Eastern sisters. Where even being able to finish school, or marry a husband of their choice is completely out of the question.
I am of Indian descent, born and raised in Kuwait and have heard firsthand accounts from maids working in these homes.
My previous publications are SEOULMATES, STORY FOR YOUR VALENTINE, WHERE IS ALLY & LETTERS FROM BIDBID. Two of my novellas, CINDERS OF CASTLEREA AND UNDER A SCOTTISH SKY are due to be released this year.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Regards,
Pamela Fernandes
This query was so successful that I had four agents ask for material, Sharon Pelletier, Danielle Burby, Michelle Brower and Carrie Prestritto. In the end, Carrie offered me a ton of advice on how to make the book better and invited me to resubmit. The nature of the book was such that it didn’t fit her booklist and so I had to start querying again.
But I didn’t change the core of the query. The manuscript went through changes. I even submitted it to a “Are you hooked?” competition of Miss Snark where I had my first page critiqued.
With minor changes to the query I started querying again and this time found a home for my book with Solstice Publishing.
Here’s my winning query:

If you think that was a short time, think again. Its been eight years since I started actively querying Painting Kuwait Violet. If you notice the first query is pretty bare bones and straight, like how I write most of my queries. Kaelan’s is very detailed and the winning one is somewhere between the two.
Query writing is a tight balance. As more stories of mine get accepted, I find that the simplest and more enticing ones do generate more interest.
Also I’ve also given up the idea of personalizing the queries too much and keeping much of the focus on the book itself. Not on me or the agent, but the book and its readers.
If you’re querying, I suggest you get to these query sites and read people’s queries. I still go over the successful queries of other authors and save the ones I like. So when my query season comes I already have a box load of ideas.
Also query often. I query and pitch short stories everyday, so now I’m not as scared of sending them out.
Which of my queries would you have preferred?

Why it’s hard to be an author in India?
India has one billion people and needless to say, thousands if not millions of potential authors. I remember when I first started, eight years earlier and even until a few months ago when I submitted my manuscripts to Indian publishing houses and the response seemed like turtle movement. I haven’t heard from some of them after two years while they’ve had my full manuscript.

The Taj Mahal, India
Since then I’ve sold a series and five books outside the country to publishers all over the world and I’m super happy. In fact, when I sold my latest romance, Wish Upon A Bollywood Star, set in India, I was asked why I didn’t pitch it in India.
I took it internationally because of my disappointing experience with publishing houses in India. Besides, most of the feedback I received from international houses was very positive with detailed suggestions for my manuscript. Harper Impulse told me it was well paced and would actually fit category romance. Random House was equally nice in saying they had no doubt this manuscript would sell until Inkspell Publishing picked it up.
So why is it so hard to be an author in India?
Here are my top five reasons:
Branding
Publishing houses in India want authors with a brand. If you self publish and build your brand, the chances of a publishing house taking you on is much higher. By their own admission, Harper Collins India and Penguin Random House India are now picking authors who have sold 25,000 copies themselves, have a “celebrity” status, win an award abroad or are internationally recognized.
This is good news for international authors. If you’ve sold many books worldwide and are doing quite well, Indian publishing houses may sign you on to publish through them in India.
Contacts
It’s not what you know but who you know. There are very few gatekeepers in the publishing world in India. There are few agents and agency representatives. The gatekeepers here are largely editors. I’ve realized that steady relationships with editors is more likely to get you through to the publishing house than your pitch.
I remember pitching Painting Kuwait Violet to houses in India and had to keep nudging for a reply. Solstice Publishing has finally bought the book this year and the cover is ready (which I’ll reveal soon). If you’re constantly interacting with the big editors then this is a niche that can work for you. If not, it’s a hard querying road. And your manuscript has little chance in the query pile.
As an author, I have more luck contacting radio stations and libraries in Mount Vernon, NY than in Borivali, Mumbai for engagements, book signings and author PR. Because who you know is more important than what you know.
Reading audience
The English reading audience in India is quite eclectic. English is not the first language for the majority of the population. Most people who do read English books are reading best sellers. Think Patterson, Dan Brown, Danielle Steele or JK Rowling. They’d still stick with Chetan Bhagat than take a chance on a new Indian author with a small or nor brand and no visibility.
Another reason may also be that they have the same mindset when it comes to international approval. This doesn’t apply to authors only, rather singers, musicians, sportsmen outside of cricket and artists also come under this umbrella. If you are appreciated abroad you must be worth something and so deserve some attention. But it’s rare to see the opposite happen.
The reading categories are also quite shoehorned. Indian audiences prefer fantasy, myth and escapism. Books on women’s fiction, grit, literary fiction, prose and crime are met with overt criticism. For example, take Arundhati Roy’s books. She won a Booker for one. Her fiction is rich in prose. Few Indians write in her style. She has a vivid sense of description that is almost cinematic. Her work is rich in literary tools like similes, metaphors and alliterations giving an almost musical cadence to her work.
Yet, if you see the reviews on Amazon India, there’s far more nitpicking over her personal life, her career, and even her social activism rather than the book itself. Few Indians and you can identify them by their names have truly appreciated the depth involved in creating the masterpieces she has in her works or the prosaic quality of her writing. It is hard pleasing this audience whose first natural instinct is to criticize to death.
Cost
It’s very expensive to publish in India. I remember print copies for my Christian fiction work cost almost 500 bucks for an 80 page book and that’s ridiculously high. People aren’t going the spend this money on a book with a highly inflated market. Add to it the taxes and the cost of shipping. It has caused the whole market to spiraled downwards.
As a result, you’ll see many educated Indians buying counterfeit books at a quarter of the price on railway platforms or by the side of the road and since they’ve illegally bought a book, have no way of reviewing them or giving the author any credit. Ebooks have become relatively easy to buy but the obstacle is still the same. With counterfeit still available and no strict copyright laws in India, people will still buy cheap or free versions of books because of the high cost.
So if you publish in India selling is hard to this audience.
Reading is a drying hobby
There are few people who read. Let’s be honest, young people are just not into literature and reading. If you look at the language being used today, you’ll be appalled. Conversational English is spoken with very little thought.
Few people encourage reading the classics . With the overload of information and competing entertainment, the reading community is shrinking. A sad day for book lovers but if you’re in a community where there is still a local library, you’re in a good place with a readership. But the ancient practice of reading to kids before bed or reading ourselves before bed time has all but vanished. With a smaller community, new authors have to compete for a smaller audience.
So these are my top reasons why its hard to be an author in India. There are outliers to all this. Authors who chucked convention and just self published, authors who found agents like Chitra Divakaruni and authors who started small, like me.

20 Have you Experienced the Divine Mercy of Jesus?
“Let our judgment of souls cease, for God’s mercy upon them is extraordinary.” (St. Faustina, Diary # 1684)

He explains:
-How St. Faustina Kowalska was directed by Jesus to spread the Divine Mercy
-What the Divine Mercy of Jesus is all about?
-The lessons we learn from Poland and the meaning of adversity
-The breadth and width of God’s mercy for us!
I have to admit we recorded this with me having a severe cough. I tried my best to cut out all those parts where I’m hacking away, but there’s some bits I couldn’t get to. I apologize for that and hope to return to our regular podcast schedule soon.
The Divine Mercy Prayer is usually said at the hour of mercy which is 3 o’clock. You can say it anytime though and anywhere as described in the podcast. It can be sung like this, a beautiful version by Kassie and Mack. It’s such a blessing to see young people spreading this devotion. You can see how simple it is.
You can pray along to this video as it has the words all written out, just to get you started. There have been numerous miracles from reciting the Divine Mercy prayer but most of all it immerses you in God’s mercy. Here’s the novena prayer.
Have you taken the time to reflect on God’s mercy this Lent? There’s a lot of focus on repentance, but Jesus thought of all us in those cruel, difficult moments out of love for us. His mercy is bigger than our past and even bigger than our sins!
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end. they are new every morning! Lamentations 3: 22-23.
