Excerpt of "Deadly Secrets" - Chapter Four, Part Three

Helena looked at him, shocked. She couldn’t believe her ears. Stormy thoughts whirled around in her mind; she heard in her head her mother’s fading voice, warning her not to go back… She shivered and dug her fingernails into her palms. Without saying another word, she rushed into her bathroom, slamming the door behind her. This was too much to handle. Unable to control the turbulence of her emotions, she leanedagainst the door and took some deep breaths, trying to calm down.
She waited there until she heard her bedroom door closing behind him. She just couldn’t face him right now—she couldn’t face anyone right now.
He’s mad,she thought. I’m not going to be affected by such nonsense, she promised herself, and started brushing her hair really hard. She finally had to stop when she realized her scalp was hurting. “Damnhim!” she cursed out loud, and after throwing the brush on the shelf, she walked back into her bedroom.
Feeling the need to get out of the house, she walked out on the balcony and took some deep breaths. She needed to do something to release the tension. On a sudden impulse, she went back inside and put on her bathing suit. Taking a beach towel, she rushed downstairs and out on the veranda. Thankful there was nobody there, as she was in no condition to talk to anyone right now, she rushed down the steps which led to the private beach. Throwing her towel on the sand, she ran to the water. It was nice and refreshing, and she jumped right in.
She swum for a while, then finally turned on her back and floated motionless on the surface, relaxing for a while. Salt water won’t allow a body to sink, and one could actually float on it and relax as if on a bed. Helena was surprised that she remembered that. Ever since they had left the island, she had swum in the sea only once, during a trip to Spain. Swimming in the pool wasn’t exactly the same, and if one triedto lie still, his body would slowly sink.
Hearing a splashing noise, she turned to see Dimitris swimming towards her, and her heartbeat accelerated. She watched him swim right past her and out in the open, and couldn’t help but admire the strength and self-confidence his effortless, harmonic moves revealed. Taking a deep breath, she swam back to the shore.
Trying to put him out of her mind, she got out and dried herself with her towel. Then she laid it down on the sand and lay on it to get some sun. It was late in the afternoon, so the sun wasn’t that hot, and she didn’t have to worry about getting burned.
After a while, she felt really hungry. Sophie and she had skipped lunch. Helena didn’t want to ruin her appetite for dinner, but she couldn’t wait until then either. So she decided to head back to the house and have some fruit. As she was walking up the steps, she saw that Dimitris was still swimming. She walked back to the house and was glad to find some bananas in a large fruit-bowl on the table out on the veranda. This way, she didn’t have to go to the kitchen and have to face Martha, who was probably preparing dinner. She grabbed a banana and rushed upstairs to her room. She didn’t really feel like talking to anybody.
She ate her banana, then took a quick shower and washed her hair. She put on a long, emerald dress made of fine silk, which she had boughtthat morning, and a pair of golden sandals. Looking in the mirror, she had to admit the dress fitted her just perfectly. Sophie was right when she had insisted on her buying it.
Walking downstairs, she found Sophie in the living room.
“You’re absolutely stunning!” Sophie exclaimed and gave Helena a warm smile. “I knew it was perfect for you,” she added.
“Thanks,” Helena said simply. “I love the color, and the material feels really good.”
“Would you like something to drink?” Sophie asked.
“I’ll have some wine,” Helena said and walked over to the bar. “Can I get you something?” she asked Sophie.
“I would like some more wine,” Sophie said, and gave Helena her glass to fill it back up.Helena filled up Sophie’s glass and gave it back to her. Then she filled up her own and went to sit by the window, letting her eyeswander over the magnificent view.
“Dimitris isn’t going to have dinner with us tonight,” Sophie said.
Helena didn’t comment on that, and even though, she sensed her aunt’s gaze on her, she just sat there avoiding her look.
Silencestretched in the room for a few minutes, as they both seemedlost in their thoughts.
“I’m really sorry about this morning,” Helena said suddenly, turning to look at her aunt.
Sophie looked at her, without saying a word.
“I know I’m being foolish, but I became really upset over something that happened,” Helena went on. She knew she had been acting rudely to her aunt, and she tried to explain her behavior.
“I knew something made you upset,” Sophie said. “But I could tell you didn’t want to talk about it.”
At that time, Martha came into the room to let them know dinner was ready, and they went to the dining room. Even though, they weren’t in the best mood, they enjoyed their dinner. Martha had prepared moussaka for them—a traditional Greek casserole with eggplants, potatoes and hamburger-meat topped with delicious creamy béchamelsauce. Helena thanked her for going into all this trouble, and assured her it was delicious.
After they were served their dessert—sweet apple pie topped with ice-cream—Helena explained to her aunt what had happened that morning, and the conversation she had with Dimitris afterwards.
Sophie was really upset about the whole thing. She got up and gave Helena a big hug.
“You poor child,” she said. “She must have scared you to death.”
“It’s okay,” Helena replied. “I’m not going to think about it anymore. It was stupid of me to get upset in the first place.”
“I’ll talk to Asimina if you want me to,” Sophie said.
“No,” Helena insisted. “Let’s just forget about the whole thing.”
Sophie didn’t seem to agree, but she kept silent. They finished their pie and went back into the living room. Sophie sat at the piano and played some classical music.
Helena lay back on the sofa and closed her eyes, feeling totally contented and relaxed. Vivaldi was one of her favorites.
After a while, Sophie got up and went to turn the stereo on. They both sat there, listening to Greek love songs.
Unwillingly, Helena realized she couldn’t put off any more telling her aunt about her decision to leave. She got up and walked over to the window, staring at the sea.
Sophie must have sensed her change of mood, because she got up and turned the music down. Then she went back and sat on her chair, waiting for Helena to talk.
“Aunt Sophie,” Helena started. “I really hate to do this, but I think it would be better for everybody, if I moved to a hotel.”
Sophie let out a deep breath and jumped out of her chair. “What are you saying, sweetie?” she asked. “This is your home. Why would you ever want to leave and go to a hotel?”
Helena could tell she was shocked.
“I think it would be better,” Helena whispered, trying to hide the uncertainty in her voice.
“Better for whom?” Sophie insisted.
Helena wanted to explain to her how she felt about Dimitris, and that she didn’t feel comfortable staying at his house. On the other hand though, she didn’t want to hurt her aunt’s feelings, pointing out to her this way that this was really Dimitris’ home, and they were just guests.
She shifted uncomfortably, not knowing what to do. Maybe she should just be quiet and stay there for a few more days. After all, she would be gone in a while, and she would put all this behind her. What did she care about him? She wouldn’t have to see him again in her life. If she moved to a hotel, her aunt would be heartbroken, and it would also be a shame, and the whole island would talk about it.
Helena knew how important pride was for Greeks. What would people think if Sistakis’ daughter moved out of her family’s home to stay at a hotel? No, Helena decided, I can’t do that.
She suddenly realized Sophie was expecting an answer. She turned and hugged her aunt. “I’m so sorry,” she said. “I just didn’t want to upset your lives.”
“Are you crazy?” Sophie asked. “What are you talking about? We’re so happy to have you here. This is your home, Helena, as much as it is ours. This home was built by your great-grandparents and will stay in our family forever. Your children will grow up here and so will their children.”
Helena inwardly laughed at that thought but didn’t say a word. She didn’t want to bring her aunt back to the cruel reality. She would be gone in a few days and most probably, she would never set foot on this island again. However, she kept her gloomy thoughts to herself.

This was another spellbinding mystery on a beautiful island setting – just as good as the first novel in the series, if not better.
I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the island with its fascinating customs and traditions, as well as the intriguing characters. Reading the book and having seeing pictures of the amazing island of Mykonos, I felt as if I were there.
I’ve become a fan of this series and can’t wait for the third book.

My Review of "Time To Let Go" by Christoph Fischer

Angel Sefer's Reviews > Time To Let Go

5 out 5 Stars
A realistic and heartwarming story!
At first, I was reluctant to read this new novel by Mr. Fischer since my dad is suffering from Alzheimer’s, and I was afraid it might be too painful. Well, I’m glad I read it. It was a realistic and heartwarming story about love, loyalty, and family bonds.
I found myself rooting for Hanna—the protagonist—whose mother was drawn, day by day, into the world of this frightening disease. All members of the family, though, were just as interesting as each one of them, in their own way, tried to make amends and adjust to the new environment and role shifting.
I highly recommend this wonderful tribute to a brave woman and all our loved ones who suffer from this devastating disease.

“To create your tomorrow..."

“To create your tomorrow, go over your day tonight when you are in bed just before you fall asleep, and feel gratitude for the good moments. If there was something you wanted to happen differently, replay it in your mind the way you wanted it to go. As you fall asleep, say, “I will sleep deeply and wake up full of energy. Tomorrow is going to be the most beautiful day of my life.”
Good night!”

It's fast paced and thrilling with a good mix of characterization and clever dialogue. Helena is a well written character that most readers will relate to. It's hard to say much about her or Dimitris without giving away clues to the mystery of Mykonos but this is for sure a book I'll recommend to friends.

A 4.48 Rating on Goodreads for Mystery Romance "Spellbound in His Arms"!

Spellbound in His Arms (The Greek Isles Series, #1)by Angel Sefer (Goodreads Author)4.48 of 5 stars 4.48  ·   rating details  ·  128 ratings  ·  37 reviews
Here are some of the ratings and reviews for "Spellbound in His Arms" by readers on Goodreads:
Dec 12, 2013Christoph Fischer rated it 5 of 5 stars"Spellbound in His Arms" by Angel Sefer is a great romantic suspense story set on the beautiful Greek island of Corfu. The story throws the reader in at the deep end with investigative reporter Jackie Alexander being caught breaking and entering in a mansion while trying to find information about a series of 'accidents'. The suspicious events are eliminating heirs to a family fortune in Greece and Jackie's wants to prevent further deaths by taking matters in her own hand.
Caught by the very attractive detective Michael Apolstolou she soon joins forces with him but the relationship between them remains 'complicated'.
The story is written so smoothly and well paced that I hardly noticed the time passing. The chemistry between the characters is right there from the start but Sefer has thankfully added a few more threads to the complex plot to keep readers intrigued and involved beyond the romance story.
With a love for detail the author describes the life of the rich, the corrupt and the powerful, the evil doers and their intrigues, distrust and often unhappy lives.
Romance and mystery lovers are being served well here with great suspense and a strong romance between the two main characters taking centre stage in an exciting and passionate crime novel.
Great entertainment.
Mar 08, 2014MM Jaye (the romance nitpicker) rated it 5 of 5 starsShelves: detective-storyfeisty-heroineinstant-attractionoriginal-settingssweet-romancewell-pacedgreek-settingI finished reading "Spellbound in his Arms" in a single day. Trust me, that was not my intention. My very busy schedule allows me to read while I commute to work and just a bit in bed, before my eyes slide shut and my Kindle hits me on the nose. Well, that wasn't the case here. I stayed up well after my usual bedtime because I just had to finish this riveting story. Angel Sefer weaves an intricate story full of twists, turns, mistrust and unexpected surprises that come down in a torrent from the very first page! The reader has barely time to pause and breathe in the intoxicating bougainvillea aromas or take in the wonderful Corfiat scenery, and yet another gunshot makes investigative reporter Jackie Alexander take flight. Most of the times though, she runs right into gorgeous detective's Michael Apostolou's arms. If only she could be sure where he stands in this web of manipulative, deadly heirs and their victims that keep adding up.

If you enjoy suspenseful romances set against an exotic island setting, "Spellbound in his Arms" is just the book for you. Note: this is a sweet romance.
Joe Prentis rated it 5 of 5 stars  ·  review of another editionSpellbound in His Arms by Angel Sefer

When I was growing up, I could not wait for the next Helen MacInnes novel to appear on the shelves of our school library. When I discovered Spellbound by Angel Sefer I realized I had found another author who had the ability to blend romance, mystery and an interesting location into a captivating plot.

The main character in Spellbound is an investigative reporter named Jackie Alexander, who travels from Atlanta to Greece to investigate a dangerous and puzzling mystery. Her visit to the Demiris estate on the Island of Corfu, immediately plunges her into jeopardy. Jackie needs to examine some documents locked away in the mansion, but encounters an intruder on her arrival at the isolated estate. The intruder is Michael Apostolou, a police detective, who has the same intentions as Jackie, but apparently for a different reason. Jackie and Michael are instantly attracted to each other, but there are too many unanswered questions to allow them to trust each other.

This book is fast paced, but surprisingly easy to read. I found myself racing through the pages, then scrolling back to reread and savor each twist and turn in the plot. The geographic details supply just the right amount of information to make you aware of the exotic surroundings without slowing down the flow of the story. Romance, suspense, and mystery supply the reader with an interesting combination that is hard to beat. Five stars from me for a story well done. This debut novel from Ms Sefer is one you don’t want to miss. I am looking forward to many others as this series continues.
Lilian Roberts rated it 5 of 5 stars  ·  review of another editionLoved the book!!!

I downloaded “Spellbound in your arms” looking for wonderful novel, intrigued by the title and the beautiful book cover. I fell in love with Angel Sefer’s novel. She has a wonderful writing style and the plot was extremely appealing.

She interweaves with an amazing skill, mystery, danger, romance and a lot of unexpected twists and turns. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery.

The story takes place on a beautiful Greek Island. Jackie a beautiful investigative reporter and Michael a very attractive detective find themselves thrown together in this intriguing plot, trying to solve a murder that has put the heirs to an incredible fortune of Greek Tycoon Andreas Demiris in gave danger.

I was totally captivated and drawn to the story like a magnet. I just couldn’t put the book down. I was charmed by the amazing job Anger Sefer did to help you feel the emotions of her characters and keep you glued to the pages.

The simmering desire that develops between Jackie and Michael is wonderful. It is a real page-turner. At the end of the story I found myself wanting more…I am hoping there is another book coming from the same author.
Sarka-Jonae Miller rated it 5 of 5 stars  ·  review of another editionI know you shouldn't judge a book its cover, but I fell for this book when I first saw it anyway. I love how the author describes the characters falling in love at first sight. I completely believe in this and have experienced it myself. It's a wonderful feeling that is difficult to capture, but the author does it well. This book also made me fall in love with Corfu, the Greek Island where the hero and heroine spend on a roller coaster ride of kidnapping, passion, daring escapes, and searching for hidden treasure.

I found the romance and thrills blended well together. It's not always easy to write a book that appeals to both romance fans and people who enjoy a good mystery/thriller, but I think the author pulled it off. I'm looking forward to reading more in the Greek Isles Series.
Carolyn Aspenson rated it 5 of 5 stars  ·  review of another editionI'm up for reading anything with a setting in a country to which I've traveled. I loved Corfu so that location for starters, drew me in.

This is a great read for anyone who likes romance/mysteries. The mystery part of the plot was well written and carried the story. The setting wasn't so much in Corfu as it was in an old mansion in Corfu but the author did a good job at making me feel as if I was there.

The love story part of this book is does exactly what it's supposed to do...it creates a fantasy of which so many women want...love at first site. Michael immediately falls for Jackie, a connection he felt because of her appeal to his eyes. I love the fantasy of that but know that kind of love, for me is very much not reality. Do I believe in love at first site? No, but that's exactly why I like to read about it.

I don't read books to learn about far away places. I don't read books to be educated (unless of course that is their job). I read books to be taken to another place, to be a fly on the wall of a fictional life, to watch it weave a web and find an ending. If you read books for similar reasons, this is a lovely read and completely does that.

The book was well written and I believe can be read by people who don't have strong reading or comprehension skills. I don't normally put something like that in a review but for this book I think it's important to point it out. Why? Because while the book has some twists and turns, it's an easy read and wouldn't overwhelm someone who might struggle with words. The writer doesn't use big words in unnecessary places to prove she's a writer. That, for me, makes it a good read for anyone who needs an escape.
