Caught in a Brainstorm with No Umbrella

So you know how people always ask writers where they get their ideas? I am so flooded by ideas that it would be impossible to realize them all. It'd be like trying to sweep all the sand off the beach. The hard part is not getting ideas. The hard part is picking which idea to spend my time with.

It's kind of like picking a husband now that I think of it. You have to ask yourself : Which of these ideas am I willing to stick with even when it becomes annoying, illogical, and old?

Overdoing it

I think too much. I overthink everything. I have more blogs written, just waiting in limbo waitingfor me to approve of them, than I have published. That's true of my novels too.
Sometimes I think (for way too long and too deep) overthinking is a road block to me ever really being successful. But the unexamined life isn't worth living, I thought. 
Sometimes I think so much, the thoughts collapse onto each other like a pile of abandoned wood waiting to be a bonfire.
I'm getting a match.

24 Hours Until Takeoff

My flight leaves in 24 hours.

I'm heading to a rustic cabin in the woods. I need to figure some things out. (Wait a minute. This sounds like a book I've recently read...). 

Every couple of years I head to a writing conference, but this year my writing group and I decided to try something different. It's like a Gone Wild themed conference! Instead of going to a big hotel to listen to writers talk about writing, we're going to a stripped-down cabin in the woods where we'll hear nothing but the clickity clack of our keyboards and the soothing sounds of corks being popped from their bottles.

I am so excited to be going away for a weekend with my writing (and my writing group of course)! Can't wait to make some major progress on my WIP.

Writers Gonna Write

My book Gone Wild is out in the world, living her life! It's cool to be a book mom. Busy, but cool.

It's been tougher than ever to fit writing into my schedule, but I'm making it my number one priority as of today because this story I am writing deserves my full attention. It's pretty important. 

Something about the Back to School time of year really kicks my butt into gear. I start thinking that it's time to Get busy writing, or get busy dying. I also have a special writing retreat coming up soon with Karen Amanda Hooper. I gotta have something to show her or she's going to freak! She is the pushiest fairy godwriter EVER, but I love it! 

So in conclusion (I loved it when my students used the phrase "In conclusion..."), I will be at the keyboard today and tomorrow and all of the days after. I'll see ya in the pages!

Release Day!

Gone Wild is available for purchase today! Woot! I'm so excited, and a little scared. I kind of want to climb a mountain and stare at the world from afar. Why is it that the things we want most in life are the scariest to undertake?

As a friend told me last night, climbing mountains is hard, but the view from the top is worth it.

What's NOT Been Happening?

I was all set to cruise in here and tell you that the reason I haven't posted in a while is because I've been tremendously busy—but I'd be lying. Not about the busy part. Promoting a book is like having a yard sale (which I am also doing this week): It's made up of a lot of little tasks. At least 20 times during the process, you say to yourself, Is this really worth the $7.45 I may potentially earn from all this work? And then you keep going.

I've dreamed of publishing a book my whole life. That's a lot of years worth of personal stuff I'm putting out on my proverbial table. I worry sometimes I'll be judged for how dirty and banged up my old ideas are. What if nobody buys all this stuff? What about the old fuddy duddies who only glance at my wares for a second before pronouncing it "junk" and moving on?

So yeah, I've been tremendously busy—but you're never too busy to drop everything and write, right?

GONE WILD continues to get stellar reviews from early readers and I am psyched for August 15—a.k.a. Release Day. Even though the official For Sale sign hasn't yet gone up, I already feel like this endeavor was a success. Just having the guts to put it out there is something to be proud of. 

My next goal is to master the art of smiling in the face of fuddy duddyness.

I was thinking about jetting off to Hawaii to sip frozen daiquiris and do crossword puzzles, but then I found this quote, so I guess it's back to the drawing board.
