The Torso Murders
Well, finally.
Okay, it’s up and ready in the Kindle store:
The Soul’s Voice Series: Book 4
High frequency trading has taken over the stock market on Wall Street and the stakes are higher than they have ever been. Tens of thousands of shares of stocks are bought and sold in transactions that take only millionths of a second and that’s a huge problem, because when the stock market becomes an entity for legalized stealing to the tune of eleven billion dollars a year, it can make people angry and resentful.
FBI Special Agent Jordan Hawkins and computer expert Doctor Catherine Bernard get a new case; a male torso has turned up in New Jersey and the murdered man was a high frequency trader. Jordan suspects organized crime, but when the torsos begin piling up, she is forced to consider a lone killer, with twisted goals for justice and retribution that can never be satisfied.

New e-book, “Eye of a Needle” released
Eye of a Needle
My new e-book, “Eye of a Needle”, is now available in Amazon’s Kindle store. (E-books can, of course, be downloaded to damn near any device)
Eye of a Needle: The Soul’s Voice Series: Book 3
Still mired in the mountain of paperwork for the Jeffers’s murders, Special Agent Jordan Hawkins and her partner, computer expert Dr. Catherine Bernard, get a call to take a report of a valuable sculpture stolen from a luxury apartment on the Upper East Side for the vacationing FBI Special Agent Mattie Hargrove, usually in charge of art thefts. Jordan files a report for the sculpture’s owner, Helga Lynch, but when Agent Hargrove returns, she calls them for help; Helga, a centenarian heiress, has died and her investigation has exploded as a long list of thefts including jewelry, art, and evidence of digital bank theft, acts of fraud and extortion begin to emerge. Everyone, it seems, wanted Helga's money and valuables and as Jordan and Catherine help Mattie determine who stole from the wealthy recluse, their list of suspects suddenly grows shorter when they start getting murdered. Who is killing them off? Is it just one greedy murderer? Or are there more?

Crazy Old Hobos and Coincidence
I’ve received some very nice correspondence about my fist novel, This Immortal Day - Sara’s Journal. I’ve been happy to chat about ideas of coincidence and destiny and accidents and asked repeatedly about where the Rory character came from so I thought, I’m copy/pasting the story into all these emails, why not copy/paste it into a blog post here too?
Okay first, I had an outline for this book I played with for a few years and while I was living in northwestern Montana, I finally decided to write it. After a couple of years there I realized I really belonged where I started and lived most of my life, in California, and when I got back I had the news on one night and one of the top stories was an update on a teacher that had gone missing exactly one year before. Her car was found abandoned, parked along the cliffs at Davenport and still no one knew where this woman was or what happened to her. I actually performed one of those jaw-drops like you see Bugs Bunny do, because that was the exactly how This Immortal Day started; an abandoned car found parked at Davenport and no one knew what happened to the female driver, a teacher’s aide.
A coincidence, right?
Every once in a while someone asks me where I got that idea from and where I stand on coincidence and I have to say I don’t know. Does our imagination tune into some thing or some place outside of our own heads and that’s where our ideas come from? Is there something to that whole collective consciousness idea? Or is it just a weird similarity? An accident, a coincidence?
Hell if I know. I do find the conversation interesting though.
On the other hand, when I created the Rory character in This Immortal Day, I based him, as an homage, on a character I fell in love with in the movie, Always, a Spielberg remake of an old movie called, A Guy Named Joe. I love this movie, if you haven’t seen it, download it, it’s really wonderful, and when you get to the one hour three minute mark, you’ll see the inspiration for my Rory and have a jumping off point for wondering about these human cosmic radios who walk among us. In the movie, Richard Dreyfuss says,
“Who knows about crazy old hobos? Maybe they’re like radio stations, picking up voices from people who’ve gone off the air.”
Now, do I believe there are people out there who can, like radio stations, pick up voices from people who’ve gone off the air?
Oh yes, yes I do.
And I think some of these human radio stations can look like soccer moms and well, anybody really, and not necessarily “crazy old hobos.” I think destiny and accidents and coincidences and everything in between and outside of all that can and does exist everywhere all the time. Why wouldn’t it?
Something else I know for sure is when I catch a glimpse behind the curtain, no matter how fleeting, I am both fascinated and validated somehow. And that can make all this day-in and day-out stuff more than bearable, it makes me pay attention to the present moment and beyond, because who knows what’s coming next?
Keep your eyes open so you don’t miss it.

The writer's envy of Bridge-gate
Lately a part of me has been wishing I wrote non-fiction. There’s been so much coverage on Chris Christie’s Bridge-gate scandal that I find myself feeling envious of all the investigative reporters and non-fiction authors furiously writing away as that incredible mega drama unfolds. Doesn’t that whole thing just blow you away? I watch MSNBC every night and every night, in the back of my mind I can see Martin Scorsese peering at his television screen through those ginormus glasses, waiting, just waiting for the definitive Christie book to come out so he can adapt it into what will probably be a forty-hour miniseries on HBO.
But who’d play Christie? DiCaprio did a good job playing Howard Hughes… but let’s face it, he can’t play Chris Christie. Jonah Hill? By the time Scorcese got around to making a Bridge-gate blockbuster Hill would be old enough to play him but I worry about that guy gaining all that weight then losing it, then gaining it again…
Bridge-gate is one of those stories of the power of corruption and in this case, mind-numbing corruption that’s so far reaching that if I made it up as a work of fiction people would think it ridiculous…. Better go, the news will be on soon and I have to get a lot more writing done today before I can click on Hardball….

New Year’s Resolutions? Don’t bother.
Every year it’s the same stupid thing; endless articles about making resolutions for the new year, pro and con, do you? Should you? New Year’s Resolutions Top Ten! Every year it’s a hot topic, only now we call it trending.
Spare me.
And I’m not the sort who makes a non-resolution resolution as a New Year’s resolution either. Instead, I… you know, just live my life. Like for so many of us, New Year ’s Eve is a work day and that morning we get up and go to work. It’s part of my annual routine; go to work then come home, listen for the sound of fireworks and gunfire at midnight, Happy New Year! Then go to bed, I have work tomorrow.
New Year resolutions, what a waste of time. I have books on my shelf to read; when I finish one, I start the next one. I know I need to exercise regularly, I do and when life gets hectic, not so much. This is just how life is; when you need to make a change, you make it or you don’t. And life changes all the time, I can’t wait for January 1st to decide I need to do something different or better, come on.
My friends who make these resolutions are not happy people; they are so guilt ridden, one always feels like a failure when her New Year’s Resolutions fade into the sunset, whether by January 3rd or two months later. It’s great to have goals, but none of them ever seem quite ready when the boom drops along with the ball at the stroke of midnight. All of them, all of them, look so sad; no more cookies, no more sleeping in, I have to get up and go to the gym. Happy New Year!
Ridiculous.
Want to make a change in your life? Make it, quit screwing around and either give it a shot or forget it and move on. Life is too short to be intimidated by a ridiculous societal expectation of making a New Year’s Resolution so you can feel anxiety, stress, and pity and judgment from either significant others or people whose opinions you really shouldn’t give a flying crap about anyway. The only opinion you should give any time and attention to is your own, yes?
So enjoy this New Year of 2014. May it bring you happiness, joy and success and whatever else you want from it. If you have a goal, state your intention and whatever it is, whatever the date is, go for it. Gonna’ eat a cookie? Enjoy it for god’s sake, what if it’s the last cookie you ever eat? Do you want to spend your last minutes kicking yourself, “I feel so crappy for eating that… there goes my resolution to lose weight!” Life is temporary so live this moment right now, pursue a goal, or don’t, right now, be here, right now.
I guess it’s just me, but when midnight approaches on New Year’s Eve, any New Year’s Eve, the only thing I want to be doing is making out. Now that’s an enjoyable way to ring in the New Year.
