Never give up. Never surrender. Why I love Galaxy Quest.

So it’s 8 pm on Tuesday evening and I am answering an FAQ for an upcoming tour to continue getting the word out about The 400Lb Gorilla. I come across this question;

What movie do you love to watch?

Unlike many of the other questions, such as, “If you were a dog food, which one would you choose to be?” , this one is a no-brainer. Galaxy Quest. And then I got to thinking why? Why do I love this move so much? What does it say about me? Well, first of all, it gets 10/10 for irony/parody/satire. Th...

Urban Fantasy: City settings

urban fantasyMost urban fantasies have an urban setting, are contemporary and usually contain supernatural elements.

The clue is in the label.

I’ve written before about setting and how important it is (wearing my children’s author hat), here; Setting It Straight

When it comes to urban fantasy, a sense of place is doubly important. In order to totally anchor the reader in the world they know and can relate to, it’s vital to get it right. Using a real setting is usefully limiting, helping to add reality to the...

The Stag Lord: Darby Kaye. REVIEW

Stag LordDarby Kaye continues her exploration of the fighting Irish in this crisp and feisty urban fantasy. Adult fans of Finn Finnegan and Gideon’s Spear will relish the added frisson of a very grown up relationship between an heir to the Celtic throne and the young healer, Shay, whose skills are constantly put to the test.

Set in the unearthly landscape of Colorado’s Garden of the Gods, dotted with fantastical hoodoo stones, it’s easy to believe that another race could wage war under the noses of the...

Shades of Grey: Jasper Fforde

There are lots of things I like about this book. First of all, it’s definitely my genre.

SHADES_OF_GREY_WEBAn urban fantasy based on a kind of warped science fiction set in a dystopian future. It’s funny, satirical, and leaves you wanting more. Everything is not explained which is always a great way to start a series. The “Something That Happened”, which has transformed society into a hue based hierarchical organisation where privilege holds sway, is never explained. We know there is a Shades of Grey 2 in the o...

Saving Mrs Travers’ Private life

PoppinsA Saturday night in, in the UK, means a chance to peruse the 90 or so channels I have, (less now that I’ve ditched Sky) and come to the conclusion that there is bugger all to watch. I’m not into Celebrity cum Z factor’s got talent with a voice on ice, so that rules me out of half the programmes straight off. And watching a drama about health professionals is a bit of a bus-man’s holiday for me.

Thank goodness for Apple TV, I say. Or, more specifically, Netflix, which saw us through the winter...

Gorilla news–New cover and new release date June 24th

front cover thumbJune may seem like a log way away, but it’ll be here sooner than you can say licketysplit. I know that because this week was the spring equinox and boy, have we been looking forward to that. I keep checking myself in the shower to make sure I have not started sprouting gills. Wettest winter since…the last wettest winter. Well, at least it gave me a bit of time to write and read. I’ll be the first to admit that I am not a great one for the commercial side of this writing lark. Though I have a...

The Nature of Magic.

science or magic So my most recent WIP, which will be number 3 in the Hipposync archives, revolves around flitting between here and there, there being somewhere that isn’t like here. You get my drift.

In a place where the same rules don’t apply and physics ain’t what it used to be, there are choices to be made. Fantasy authors tend to be faced with this kind of thing quite often i.e. how much time and effort to spend in organizing and arranging the rules of their magical world. There are definitely two school...

Gorilla release date (March 25 2014) and lucky Spam

Gorilla thumb 3dYes I’ve been away.

You may wonder where, or you may not give a hoot. But I’ll tell you anyway. In one of my other incarnations, I released one of my MG books in October and I got a little busy with that. But here I am to tell you about the 4ooLb Gorilla. Our new release date in March 25th. Yay. That gives me more time to…do stuff. We’re proofing the layout as I write and it all looks good, so make a note in your brand new 2014 diaries.

As for Spam–I keep having problems with trying to post on W...
