Gina Miani's Blog
July 16, 2014
Full disclosure...
I have avoided writing a blog because, well, I don't like blogs. And I don't like them because I don't think anyone really reads them, and the ones I have read seem sort of pointless, unless you are a World Famous Person.
Plus, I don't have anything to write about. I am a fiction writer. Truth is hard. Truth is too complicated. I will find myself making stuff up, because my own life is so terribly boring. Talking about writing is, frankly, boring, except to other writers. And then it is only interesting if you are having the same problems they are having.
But I feel terribly guilty about NOT writing a blog (growing up Italian and Catholic does that to a person), so here I am, writing a blog. At least one entry.
I have spent over twenty years writing the HAMMER OF GOD trilogy and—guess what?— I'm not done. I am working on a paperback version — one condensed book — which I hope to get out by the end of summer.
I often compare my writing process to knitting. HAMMER is like the scarf I started back in 1973 and never finished, is still sitting somewhere in a plastic bag, attached to a skein of yarn and knitting needles. Except in the case of HAMMER, this scarf is a thousand feet long. HAMMER is my child, and like a child, it is never quite perfect, always in need of improvement. I have never been able to "let it go" as the song goes (Oh great, you say, now I'll never get that song out of my head).
I am working on a sequel to AVALON (by "working," I mean there are three chapters in my computer somewhere) which will not be set in Avalon, because that would be sort of boring. I never planned to write a sequel, but I had to by popular demand (at least three people demanded it).
Don't laugh. It's not a joke.
My latest book is called FORLORN. It's a YA novel. Having done Historical Fiction and Women's Fiction I am moving on to YA. Trying to find my "niche." FORLORN is a supernatural love story. I love how that sounds. It involves angels and demons, but the REAL kind, not those silly, made up beings in Supernatural and Dominion. (I watched five minutes of Dominion and nearly threw up. Has NO ONE who writes about angels EVER read the actual bible?)
The best part of FORLORN is that my daughter, Dominique, is writing songs for the book so we will release the ebook and EP of music together. A book with a soundtrack! I'd like to figure out how to embed the songs into the actual ebook, so the reader could actually click on the link and play it, but I'm not sure that's actually possible. The songs are awesome. I will put up a link to the main song, Dragons, as soon as I figure out how.
I'm headed to Avalon (the real Avalon) next week, where I hope to get some writing and reading done. I'm also doing an Author Lecture (doesn't that sound fancy?) at the Library on August 5, so if you happen to be somewhere near the Jersey Shore please stop by. I will need an audience. Thankfully, my Big Italian Family will be there. Never do a book event with your Big Italian Family. Really fills up the seats.
If you've gotten this far congratulations! You've won a new car! Just kidding. Thanks for reading. I love you, whoever you are :)
