Beard Guide for Beginners
You’ve been thinking about growing a beard for a while, but you don’t know how to begin, right? We’re guessing you started with a Google search and that brought you to us: Tabletop Beard. Good start!
Deciding to grow your first beard can be stressful, we understand. Whether you are in school, or at a job, you may not want to draw extra attention to yourself during the transformation. But when you approach beard growth with confidence, the right information and tools, you will do it without faltering.
So, yes, you made the right decision. A beard can help increase your self-confidence, give you a more mature, experienced, or exciting new look. And all you need to do is take the first step, which you already did by researching the topic and reading this article.
Let’s go!
Gather Your ToolsYour perfect beard is not a fantasy; it doesn’t need to be born of the stuff of fables. It’s not out of reach or unobtainable. Your perfect beard is what you make it. That’s one of the coolest parts about growing one. Full customization!
But in order to design your new facial hair, you’re going to need a few tools for the journey. Let us help you by listing them for you.
Comb or Brush – your choice. Try them both and see what feels right to you. It often comes down to beard type and length. So, to start, you should be fine with a simple fine-tooth comb. As your beard grows in and gets thicker, you can try a boar bristle brush. Trust us, they are nice. Scissors – all scissors are not created equally. So, no, you cannot use your kitchen shears or the ones your grandmother uses to quilt. Beard-trimming scissors should be easy to use, ergonomic, sturdy, and sharp. Scissors should easily cut hair, not pull it. They should also excel at precision, to better snip away those stubborn flyaway or oddly wiry hairs.Beard trimmer – the same is said for beard trimming razors. There are many to pick from, so look for ones that are easy to use, lightweight, easy to clean, ergonomic, and have high-quality blades, Bonus points for being waterproof. For fine-tuning and shaping, look for a trimmer with a guide set of five or more nice-looking guides. The more, the better! You can read a more comprehensive and fantasy-themed article about them here on our blog: Beard Care Essential Starting Equipment: Part 1
Stock some Premium Beard Oil, Butter, and BalmThis is one of the fun parts of growing and maintaining a nice-looking beard. Maybe you already know about using hair care products, if not, the ones you use on your head are different than the ones you use on your face.
Like hair care products, you’ll want to choose beard care products that have high-quality ingredients that will benefit the health of your hair and skin. Good news, Tabletop Beard provides premium products with the best natural oils.
We may joke that our products are magical potions, but that’s only because we are huge fans of tabletop games and all things fantasy. The truth is, our team is not just made of wizards, bards, alchemists, and rangers, it is made of men who did not know exactly how to grow a beard when they started too.
What are Beard Oils, Beard Butters, and Beard Balms? Let us Define Each for YouBeard oil – how does beard oil work? Well, it is basically a leave-in conditioner for your facial hair. It will help soften your hair and make it smell nice. Pick a scent (or scents) that represent your mood or personality. At Tabletop Beard, our scents are based on popular fantasy tabletop game classes. Try our Ranger or Bard; both are very popular!Beard butter – also a leave-in conditioner, but it also provides so slight hold too. Those might be the preferred product for people with long or full beards that have a natural shape. Cool thing, our beard butters are in the same scents as our beard oils! Take a look here.Beard balm – primarily a beard styling product that helps care for your hair and skin. Beard balm is great if you are struggling to tame your facial hair. This one has the most hold of the three. Why Use Beard Oil?People like to ask, what does beard oil do? Think of it like this. Many of the products you have used in the past to wash your face have actually dried out your skin. Beard oil will help rehydrate your skin and beard, therefore preventing dry skin, itch, or beard dandruff. Does beard oil work? Does it help grow your beard? Well, it helps remove the obstacles that will prevent your beard from growing. That’s good news. Beard oil:

Why Use Beard Butter?Shea butter and coco butter are the most common ingredients you will find in beard butter. Beard butter will soften and tame your facial hairs, which is going to be something you face if you decide to grow something more than a five o’clock shadow. Beard hairs sometimes grow at different lengths and sometimes different consistencies. Expect random and inconsistent hairs that just do not want to behave. Like beard oil, beard butter will help nourish your hair and skin. Beard butter:

Why Use Beard Balm?Since it is a beard-styling product, you will use it mainly for the hold. Unlike beard oil and beard butter, beard balm is often unscented. It can be used in conjunction with beard oils. Think of riding a motorcycle (or dragon). All that wind will scatter the larger and longer beards. This is when having a container of beard balm on hand will keep you looking your best. Beard bald:

The Origin of Balbo’s Quest Board
a Tabletop Beard story by Kevin Breaux
It’s a cool winter evening. The wind outside presses so hard against the building that the foundation groans. Balbo Garabaldi is seated inside The Dragon’s Beard, after a long and lively celebration honoring those who have passed. While staring into the roaring fire inside the oversized hearth, he strokes his waist-length beard and reminisces about the not-too-distant past.
“All’s clear boss,” Evelyn says cheerfully on her approach. “We’re closed for the night! Get some rest.”
Balbo nods. “You go ahead up. You’re opening in the morning.”
“You know I can’t sleep after one of your parties. Especially when it’s—”
“I know. I know.”
After giving Balbo’s shoulder a gentle squeeze, she whispers, “You did good tonight. The other clerics were very touched by your speech.”
“Thank you, Evelyn.”
“You’re all deeply retrospective, I can sense it.” She crossed her arms and swung her hips into a more relaxed stance and then smirked. “What fills your ale-soaked mind?”
“That first day… That very first day.”
***
After ages of questing, and gathering enough treasure to buy an entire city, Balbo purchased the inn that would later become the Dragon’s Beard. He wanted to provide a safe place for everyone to eat, drink, and find entertainment. All classes and all races would be welcome in his establishment.
Balbo had adventured with all sorts: elven rangers, human fighters, gnome wizards, halfling rogues, dwarven clerics even a warlock that was part demon. The rewards were many, but the loss of teammates, good people who had become friends, had become too much for him to stomach.
“Are you sure?” Drogan asked.
Drogan Fairstone, a dwarven cleric, was an old friend of Balbo’s. He had quested often with him through the years.
The once young and bright-eyed man he was had gained more than gems and gold though the years; he had earned valuable wisdom. He had no doubts in his ming; it was time to move on to the next stage of life.
There was a distant howl in the wind, it sounded like a woman’s panicked scream for help. He had heard that voice before, long ago. He knew it he was imagining it now—that person was dead, regardless of it sending a chill down his spine.
“I am, Drogan,” Balbo said while he stretched the stiffness of an old wound out of his arm. “I’m…done.”
“I remember the first time we quested together. You had only a knuckle’s length of wavy beard hair. Do you recall what I told you then?”
“Indeed, I do. You said I looked like a child trying to cover up my inexperience.”
Drogan laughed before he stepped closer to Balbo, just outside the front entrance to the inn. “And look at you now, wearing a fine beard, long, full, brushed nightly by beautiful full-bodied women.”
Balbo laughed back.
“The length of a man’s beard tells a tail of his experience. When it reaches the floor, then the man must decide if it is time to change his ways.”
Balbo pointed at Drogan’s long beard. “You’re getting close, old friend.”
“I have many years of questing ahead of me.”
After he patted Drogan’s shoulder, Balbo smiled. “Teach the young ones, will you? Prepare them better than we were prepared.”
“I will.”
“Good. Now, hand me that fancy glowing hammer of yours.”
Drogan’s war hammer was his most prized possession, Balbo knew this, he was there when he forged it, and there when it was enchanted by a powerful wizard. Once he took the hammer, he aimed it and then used it to pound the post that had the quest board fixed to it into the hard ground.
“Really, Garabaldi?” Drogan sighed. “Such a use for a legendary holy weapon?”
“Hey, now my quest board is blessed. Right? Ha!“
Drogan took the hammer back as he fought off a smile. “I see there is a quest here that requires a cleric, rogue, and fighter. A goblin den?”
Balbo laughed again. “Reports of 12-15 goblins.”
“What is so funny about 15 unruly goblins?”
“It’s not the goblins that make me laugh, it’s the fighter who is waiting for a rogue and cleric to join him on the quest,” Balbo tilts his head, crinkles his nose, and nods.
“Ahh….” Drogan moans. “Is it someone I know?”
“Yes. Someone you know.”
“Someone whose presence I do not enjoy?”
Balbo nods. “Yes. Someone you do not enjoy.”
“Does this fighter by any chance have red scales and a propensity of getting his squad mates in trouble?”
“He does have red scales.”
The dwarf stomped his feet and groaned. “Curses.”
“Ha! Still want the quest, old friend? This will be the first of my listed quest taken.”
Drogan hefted his war hammer over his shoulder, drew a deep breath and looked Balbo in the eye. “Have I ever turned down a quest?”
“No, no you have not,” Balbo flashed his most charming smile.
“So, where is this goblin den?”
“An old abandoned mine. North of here, in the hills where—”
“I know the place,” Drogan’s voice was filled with confidence.
“Good. Good.”
“I can’t recall, tell me, what was being mined there?”
“I’m told that mine was abandoned a hundred years ago,” Balbo tilted his head in thought. “Gemstones of some sort.”
Drogan smiled as he reached his hand out to shake Balbo’s. “Goblins. Mines. Gemstones.”
“No better quest for a dwarven cleric.”
The two old friends shake hands.
“Are you sure you don’t want to join me?”
Deep down, in many ways, Balbo wished he could.
“I wish you the best of luck, friend. I’ll be here waiting inside the Dragon’s Beard when you come back for your reward.”

RPG Game Spotlight – Vampire The Masquerade
Original cover art from 1991.IntroductionIf you’ve ever fantasized about, lurking in the shadows, and upholding ancient inhuman laws, then the award-winning Vampire: The Masquerade is the tabletop RPG you need to sink your teeth into. With a rich lore, complex characters, and the promise of eternal (un)life, this game is a thrilling ride through the dark and mysterious world of vampires.
Vampire: The Masquerade was developed by White Wolf Publishing and has held a prominent place in the gaming community since its original release in 1991. The game is part of the larger “World of Darkness” series, which explores various supernatural beings and their interactions with the mortal world. Vampire: The Masquerade focuses on the intricate and often perilous lives of vampires, known as Kindred, who exist in a hidden society parallel to the human world.
We played Vampire for several years (back in the day) and loved it. That said, let us shine a light on several key points that make this game great.
The Masquerade – What is it?The titular Masquerade refers to the societal norm that Kindred must adhere to in order to keep their existence hidden from humans. Breaking the Masquerade can result in severe consequences from the vampire community, including death. This adds a layer of tension and intrigue, as players must navigate their vampiric abilities while maintaining secrecy.
Tim Bradstreet interior art.Set in a World of DarknessVampire: The Masquerade is set in a dark, gothic-punk version of the modern world (starting when the books were released in the 90s). The game’s atmosphere is heavily influenced by themes of horror, politics, and personal tragedy. Cities are depicted as sprawling urban landscapes teeming with secrets and dangers, both supernatural and mundane. The setting is rich with lore, drawing inspiration from various mythologies and horror literature.
One of the things that makes Vampire: The Masquerade so interesting is that it is set in a world that mirrors our own but is shrouded in a veil of night. Here, vampires, or Kindred as they prefer to be called, rule the darkness. Every city is a potential hotbed of intrigue, where ancient power struggles and modern-day schemes intertwine. The setting is ripe for storytelling, with gritty urban backdrops, Gothic mansions, and shadowy alleyways providing the perfect stage for your nocturnal adventures.
Clans and FactionsOne of the most appealing aspects of Vampire: The Masquerade is the diversity of its characters. Players can choose from a variety of clans (13 at the start of the series), each with their unique abilities, weaknesses, and history. Will you join the aristocratic Ventrue, the rebellious Brujah, or the enigmatic Tremere? Each clan offers a different flavor of gameplay.
But it’s not just about picking a clan and calling it a night. The game’s rich political landscape means that your character will have to navigate the complex web of alliances and rivalries that define Kindred society. The Camarilla, the ruling body of vampires, enforces a strict code known as the Masquerade to keep their existence hidden from humans. Break it, and you risk bringing the wrath of your fellow Kindred upon you.
Tim Bradstreet art.Gameplay filled with Blood, Betrayal, and Battle! At its core, Vampire: The Masquerade is about storytelling. The game master, known as the Storyteller, weaves a narrative that the players navigate through their actions and decisions. Whether you’re brokering a truce between rival factions, hunting down a rogue Kindred, fighting werewolves, or simply trying to make it through the night without your secrets being exposed, every session is filled with suspense and drama.
Mechanically, the game uses a system of dice rolls to determine the outcome of actions, but it’s the role-playing that truly brings the game to life. Players are encouraged to delve deep into their characters’ psyches, exploring their motivations, fears, and desires. This can lead to some truly memorable moments, from tense standoffs to heartfelt confessions.
Character sheet – White Wolf PublishingRPG with LegacySince its release, Vampire: The Masquerade has had a profound impact on the RPG genre and popular culture. It was one of the first games to introduce a modern-day setting and a focus on personal horror, influencing countless other RPGs and media. The game has spawned numerous editions, supplements, and adaptations, including video games, novels, and a television series.
Vampire: The Masquerade introduced several innovations to the RPG genre too, including the focus on narrative over mechanics, and the exploration of mature themes. Its success paved the way for other games in the “World of Darkness” series and inspired a new wave of RPGs that prioritize storytelling and character-driven gameplay.
You might notice, after reading the handbooks, that some of your favorite books and TV shows have borrowed from this role-playing system.
The Book of NOD by White Wolf Publishing tells the legend of the creation of vampires in the form of an epic poem.By the End of the NightYou will soon learn that Vampire: The Masquerade is not just a game; it’s an experience. It’s a chance to explore the darker side of human nature, to walk in the shoes of a creature that is both predator and prey. With its immersive setting, compelling characters, and emphasis on storytelling, it’s no wonder that it has remained a beloved staple of gamers in the tabletop RPG community for decades.
Whether you are drawn to the political machinations of the Kindred or the personal struggle to retain humanity, Vampire: The Masquerade offers a compelling and unforgettable journey into the dark heart of the World of Darkness.
So, gather your fellow Kindred, light the candles, and prepare for a night of blood, betrayal, and banter. Vampire: The Masquerade is a game that will leave you thirsting for more.

A Return to Cyrodiil with the Remastered Experience of Oblivion on Xbox
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, a monumental achievement in the realm of role-playing games, has returned to captivate its audience once more with a remastered edition for the Xbox. It’s been nearly two decades since the original release in 2006, and players are eagerly stepping back into the enchanting world of Cyrodiil to relive the adventure in stunning new detail. Are you ready to escape from the Imperial Prison again? We are!
Revisiting the ClassicsThe remastered version of Oblivion brings forth a wave of nostalgia, yet it is not merely a recollection of past glories. It breathes new life into the game with enhanced graphics, refined textures, and an overall improved visual fidelity that honor the rich landscapes and intricate details of the original. The lush forests, towering mountains, and bustling cities of Cyrodiil now appear more vibrant and immersive, inviting players to explore once again and, of course, face off against most cooler looking mud crabs.
[image error]Enhanced Gameplay ExperienceThe remastered edition does not solely focus on aesthetics. It addresses several gameplay mechanics and bugs that were present in the original release, ensuring a smoother and more engaging experience. Combat has been polished, making battles more dynamic and fluid. The interface has been updated to be more user-friendly, providing players with easier navigation and control. It might take a moment to learn the new controls, but that could be because we are so used to the Skyrim ones from our fourth and fifth playthroughs.
Audio improvements are another significant aspect of the remastered Oblivion. The soundtrack, which has always been a cornerstone of the game’s allure, sounds more majestic and immersive with enhanced sound quality. Voice acting and ambient sounds have been refined, contributing to the overall atmospheric experience of Cyrodiil. Yes, that’s still Patrick Stewart as Uriel Septim VII.
[image error]New Content and FeaturesIn addition to the enhancements, the remastered version includes new content that enriches the already expansive world. New quests, characters, and locations have been added, providing fresh experiences for both returning players and newcomers. These additions integrate seamlessly into the game’s narrative, offering more depth and opportunities for exploration. And who doesn’t like added side quests, right?
Performance and Technical UpgradesThe technical upgrades are noteworthy, as the remastered Oblivion takes full advantage of the Xbox’s capabilities. Load times are significantly reduced, and the game runs smoothly without interruptions, allowing players to immerse themselves fully without the frustration of lag or crashes. The stability and performance improvements make the remastered version better than the original, but at times you may still run into the same old bugs…making you wonder if that was designed on purpose. Side note: Don’t be surprised if you run into a new bug or two.
A Worthy ReturnEnjoy a welcome return to Cyrodiil through the remastered Oblivion because it is a worthy journey for any RPG enthusiast new or old. It captures the essence of what made the original game phenomenal while embracing modern advancements to improve the experience. It’s not just a trip down memory lane; it’s a celebration of a timeless classic.
In conclusion, the remastered Oblivion for Xbox is a testament to the enduring legacy of The Elder Scrolls series. It showcases the beauty of Cyrodiil in ways that were previously unimaginable and offers an enriched experience that both honors the past and embraces the future. Whether you are a veteran adventurer or a newcomer to the realm, the remastered Oblivion promises a spectacular journey through the heart of Tamriel, one that you won’t soon forget. Ares’ Divine Guide to Beard Care
Greetings, mortals, gamers, and beard growers! It is I, Ares, the fierce and mighty God of War. While you may know me for my prowess on the battlefield, my unyielding strength, and my strategic genius, there is another aspect of my godly existence that deserves your admiration: my magnificent beard.
Allow me to take you through the rituals and techniques that ensure my beard remains as majestic as my reputation. For even a god must take time to care for his appearance, and a beard as splendid as mine does not come without effort.
The Importance of a Divine BeardA beard is not merely an adornment; it is a symbol of power, wisdom, and virility. For a god such as myself, it signifies authority and commands respect. My beard, with its flowing, dark tendrils, strikes fear into the hearts of my enemies and garners admiration from my allies.
The Ritual of CleansingThe first step in maintaining a beard worthy of a god is cleanliness. After a long day of battle and glory, it is essential to cleanse the beard of blood, sweat, and the remnants of victory. I immerse myself in the sacred waters of the River Styx, allowing the powerful currents to cleanse my beard thoroughly. For you mortals, a gentle yet effective beard wash like the one Tabletop Beard provides will suffice. You can rest assured, when it is from the wizards at Tabletop Beard, it is free from harsh chemicals! Yes, your beard hair must be treated with reverence.
Conditioning for StrengthA beard must not only look powerful but also be strong and resilient. After cleansing, I apply divine concoctions of beard oils and butters, prepared by none other than my wise friends here at Tabletop Beard. These oils infuse the hair with strength and vitality, preventing breakage and ensuring each strand remains robust. Mortals can achieve similar results with a high-quality beard oil, rich in natural ingredients such as sunflower, avocado, and golden jojoba oil.
The Art of CombingTo maintain my beard’s majestic flow, it must be combed with precision and care. I use a comb of legend and fable forged from the finest celestial metal, its teeth perfectly aligned to detangle and shape each hair. But you may use one from a mortal store. Begin from the roots and work your way to the tips, ensuring that the beard remains tangle-free and immaculate. A wooden or metal comb of superior craftsmanship will serve you well.
Trimming for PerfectionEven a god’s beard requires regular trimming to maintain its shape and prevent unruliness. Using a blade blessed by Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths, I trim my beard with meticulous care, sculpting it into a form that conveys both power and elegance. Mortals should invest in a sharp, high-quality pair of scissors or a beard trimmer, and approach the task with patience and precision.
Styling with PurposeThe final step in my beard-care routine is styling. A beard must reflect the god who wears it: fierce, commanding, and dignified. I use a special wax infused with the essence of ambrosia, crafted by the muses themselves, to shape and hold my beard nicely in place. This ensures that it remains flawless, no matter the chaos of battle. For mortals, a beard balm expertly crafted by Tabletop Beard will provide excellent hold and nourishment.
The Aura of ConfidenceCaring for my beard is not merely a matter of vanity; it is an act of preparation for the challenges and triumphs that lie ahead. With each stroke of the comb and each drop of oil, I fortify myself, ready to face any adversary with unwavering confidence. For you mortals, remember that a well-groomed beard is a testament to your discipline and self-respect. Wear it proudly, and let it be a reflection of your inner strength.
In conclusion, the art of beard care is no fable, it is a sacred practice, one that transcends the realms of gods and mortals alike. Follow these divine rituals, and with the help of Tabletop Beard, you too may achieve a beard worthy of admiration. Now, go forth and conquer, with the knowledge that your beard, like mine, is a symbol of your power and greatness.
Yours in strength and beard care style,
Ares, God of War

Monk Class – Disciplined Spellcasting Martial Artists
Welcome friend! We have been very busy here at The Dragon’s Beard. Ho! Owning such a popular establishment can be a blessing and a curse. But today, old Balbo wants to focus on the blessing side. Therefore, I decided to host an impromptu celebration for one of my favorite classes that has so many options. Which way will you choose? Once becoming a monk, will you take on the role of a fighter? Or perhaps a rogue? Do you wish to provide your team with healing, defense, or offensive support? No matter your choice, we are sure your decision will come from a place of deepest earnestness.
Weapons and ArmorMonks are always unarmored. The only other class you may find lacking armor, yet by choice, is the barbarian. Unarmored combatants are so adept at fighting without amor that they gain all sorts of advantageous bonuses when not armored in battle. This is one, if not the biggest, of the monk’s specialties. Think of it this way, with all the roundhouse kicks, pressure point strikes, and backflips that martial artists perform, a lack of armor makes them lighter, faster, and more deadly.
Weapons are another interesting point for monks. They are sometimes considered at their best unarmed. That said, they can use simple swords, maces, daggers, spears, clubs or a quarterstaff. Perhaps your DM will allow you to use a fancy spade too, like seen wielded by Shaolin Monks.
MagicMonks are spiritual masters that harness the power of Ki. Ki flows through all living beings and monks know how to use it to enhance their speed and strength. Did you see that flurry of ten crescent kicks? No? Of course not, the monk delivering them to his opponent has utilized Ki to move at superhuman speeds! Ha! I wish my barmaids could access such power. I would be able to double business. Ha! Ha! But to become a skilled monk and learn how to use Ki, you must spend many years studying and hard training.
RacesMost races can become monks. And if you are following DnD 5e tabletop gaming rules, that gives you a very long and exciting list to pick from. The best races for monks are often listed as Wood Elf, Aarakocra, Ghostwise Halfling when playing DnD. For Baldur’s Gate 3, Half-Orc, Half-Wood Elves, Drow, and Githyanki are best.
So, be sure to do some research before creating your character but know that Woof Elf is likely a safe bet. Wait, do monks gamble? I bet they do! Ha!
BackgroundsGamers, you can have some fun creating your monk’s background. How about making them start off as a criminal? This gives some good stealth skills and prepares your monk to work as a rogue. Not interested in stealing or deception, how about faction agent? This way you will have some nice diverse bonuses to choose from and allow you to blur the lines of what subclass you want to focus on. Like supporting the team when they are hurt. The Hermit background will give you healing bonuses which are very nice. Far Traveler is an interesting choice too. With this background you gain helpful bonuses in insight and perception. Both are fantastic for monks.
Which tabletop gamers should play a Monk? Those who are good-natured individuals who enjoy helping others and providing humanitarian aid when they can. All monks are lawful good and lawful neutral (we miss those fun old alignments). We also suggest players who are experienced and ready for a challenge. Remember this old Japanese Proverb: “Fall seven times, stand up eight.”
On the other hand, if you are Rex, from Preston, Idaho, teaching Rex Kwon Do, you cannot be a monk. Sorry.
You May Not be Able to Wear Armor, But We Have Something to Protect Your Beard!Tabletop Beard has the perfect items to help aid our unarmed and unarmored friends! Our premium beard care products are created with the finest (and most lawful) ingredients a monk could desire, if monks desired things. Wait, do monks desire? In Buddhism, they are taught to understand desire and control it. So, yes, monks can want things that are absent in their lives, like the tranquil scent of lemon and ginger, which is exactly what our monk beard oil and beard butter smells like!
Our celebration of monks got us all thinking about the adventures of the Crouching Tiger and the Hidden Dragon. Those monks could fly and walk on water. Their martial arts moves were so fast that they spun right out of their facial hair. Perhaps they were not enlightened. Because we all know the oldest, wisest monks have long white beards. One can surmise that those ancient beards were probably dry. So, it is with great respect that we honor all monks with beard oil that will help condition and soften their beards.

Sorcerer Class – Magic without the Spell Books, Wands, and Other Trinkets
Ho there! Welcome friend! You might notice an interesting group of spellcasters sitting in the corner of my tavern today. Well, let me tell you, you see, a Tiefling, an Aasimar, and a Half-Ef walked into the bar this morning. HA! No joke. And guess what, there’s a serpent man here too! He’s outside, shedding his skin. HA HA! Ho, that part was a joke. He’s in the outhouse.
Today, The Dragon’s Beard is celebrating the enigmatic sorcerer class, but these shy fellows requested we keep the party simple, not like our normal boisterous festivities. Far be it from me to argue with someone born with such innate powerful magic.
My barmaid, Evelyn, tells me one of the two Tiefling here today, the woman, was in fact cursed, not born with her power. Hmmm…I wouldn’t know how that feels.
*wink*
*wink*
Anyway, let’s discuss what makes sorcerers so rare and unusual in fantasy and roleplaying games.
Weapons and ArmorSorcerers are one of the worst melee classes in tabletop games. Don’t bother handing them weapons other than a light crossbow, sling, darts, staff, or maybe a dagger. They can’t master their use. However, since sorcerers are not carrying spell books in their hands, they may want to hold something. Since fidget toys are rare drops in most RPG games, your sorcerer friend may have a compulsion to hold something. If they decide to grip a dagger in their sweaty palm, don’t let them run up and down the stairs of my inn unless they are carrying it pointing down.
As far as armor is concerned, sorcerers don’t wear any. They can’t wear any. Ho! Don’t get old Balbo wrong. They aren’t naked! That would make for an interesting fantasy, wouldn’t it? Sorcerers are often adorned in fancy hats that award an interesting bonus for their wearer. Like a hat of invisibility. Can you imagine, sneaking about unseen, then, whoosh! Fireball to the face! Ha! I should ask one of these fine young users of magic if they have ever done that. It would be an amazing story to share with future adventurers.
Not only hats, but they can also wear capes imbued with special properties. Maybe a fancy cape, with a purple and gold pattern, or a tan one and a grey border. If your sorcerer is more of a spring than an autumn, they can pick a cape that is bright yellow and orange. A bold choice for the deep dungeons, but at least they would never get lost in the dark. More important than color is how useful the cape’s attribute is. Look for a cape that gives you an additional benefit that helps your team and/or your play style.
Magic – Yep, they got some! The source of their magic is what makes sorcerers different than other magic user classes like wizards, warlocks, druids, and others. While many other spellcasters rely on inanimate objects like spell books, amulets, wands, staffs, or pacts with demons and devils, the sorcerer is using powers that are innate. Stop waving that wand at me, Harrius of Potterville! No, you’re not a sorcerer, you can’t have a free drink! Some wizards don’t know when to call it a day and go to bed. Ha!
Most sorcerers are born with innate power. Others have had power forced upon them. So, depending on their backstory, it could be a blessing or a curse. They also have access to something called Metamagic, which allows them to manipulate and customize their spells. This can be incredibly useful and increase the range and destructive force of a spell, among many other things.
RacesIn Dungeons and Dragons, the popular races for sorcerers are Yuan-Ti (serpent men), Tieflings, Aasimar, Half-Elves, and sometimes boring old humans. The top picks are often Aasimar and Tieflings. Those races often look like demons and angels…odd, right? I’m expecting an…interesting environment here in the bar as the night hours grow late. You see, I placed a wager with the cook, he thinks the Tieflings will get more attention from the drunkards than the Aasimar. Tis the devil you know, he said.
In games like Baldur’s Gate 3, Halflings, Gnomes, and Drow are added to the list. Which would you pick? A Drow sorcerer sounds truly wicked.
BackgroundsSpellcaster backgrounds are often easier to pick than others. Players will often want bonuses that make them more powerful. There are four or five viable options, but Balbo suggests two great ones that people seem to agree on.
Charlatan is a good background for your new sorcerer build, and so is faction agent. Charlatan will help you make up for low dexterity with some extra charisma and deception skills. Faction Agent will add insight and mental skills that can help round out your sorcerer’s abilities. People also like to pick courier as a background; it gives insight and persuasion benefits as well as some fine upscale clothing that will make you the best one to meet with the nobles when questing.
Who should play a Sorcerer?Someone who wants raw power and is okay with being super squishy. Maybe you’re the creative one in your group of gamers. Or perhaps you like being the mysterious one. Playing a sorcerer means taking on a fun and exciting responsibility. It will be a mighty challenge, but the reward is the discovery of great power.
That being said, this class may not be the best for beginners. However, it’s absolutely a great step for players who enjoy taking on the magic user roles and want to try something new. You know who you are, you have probably said, “burn baby, burn,” several times during tabletop game nights.
Can you name a famous sorcerer from a TV show, movie, or book? My pick is John Constatine, the occult detective from DC Comics.
Customize your Magic and your Beard! Are you ready to have the next fantasy fable written about the exploits of your character? Well, Tabletop Beard is here to support your sorcerer and your beard, on this new adventure. Not everyone is born with the innate power of growing a big full beard. Some need an extra hand, and that is when Tabletop Beard will join your team to help you with your journey.
Tabletop Beard’s premium beard care products are created with the finest ingredients. Like the wielders of Metamagic, our company’s beard care magicians have crafted and customized fragrances you will thoroughly enjoy. The sorcerer scent will have you channeling chaos with the aroma of otherworldly cosmic cotton candy.
Our gathering of sorcerers may not be filling The Dragon’s Beard with song and merriment, but the inn is overflowing with an exciting undercurrent of mystery that is keeping everyone entranced, as if they just glimpsed the edge of another realm. Are you ready to join them? Let’s go, gamers!
