Welcome to the #HopsWithHeart Spring Fling Blog Hop

Sepia Shot of a Young Kissing Couple.

Hi everyone, welcome to my blog post for the Love is in the air…Spring Fling Blog Hop! I hope you’re enjoying more spring like weather where you are. I am apparently due for snow flurries today, must be because I just got some flower seeds on the weekend :)

For my personal giveaway I’m giving away 2 prizes, 1 ebook copy of my debut romance IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES (or as I refer to it Ghost meets It’s A Wonderful Life) and 1 eArc copy of my upcoming dark paranormal release, DARK INTENT.

Both are two very different stories, one, IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES has been called more of a love story, a story of second chances, of coming of age and a hero’s journey. Josh and Avery are already in love and headed towards getting engaged when the story begins, and it’s more of a test of if Josh can and will find his way back to her. DARK INTENT is very different, Arabella is a vengeance demon and Ryder is a demon hating bodyguard type. Normally he wouldn’t go near Arabella unless it was to get rid of her, but the demon after her is the same one who destroyed Ryder’s life fourteen years ago and that pulls Ryder into her life like a magnet.

My question to enter the contest is: do you prefer books where the couples already know each other even a little or where they’re complete strangers when the story opens?

Note: Please leave your email address in your comment so  you can be notified if you are a winner.

Here’s the Grand Prize list:

1 Kindle Fire (Donated by Blushing Books)

1 $75 Amazon (or B&N) Gift Card

1 $25 Starbucks Gift Card (Donated by Sue)

1 $25 Blushing Books Gift Card (Donated by Patty)

1 $25 Loose Id Gift Card (Donated by Cara)

Dearest Clementine (Dearest, #1) Cover Reveal

DC_FRONT_FINAL

TITLE: Dearest Clementine (Dearest, #1)

AUTHOR: Lex Martin

RELEASE DATE: April 18, 2014

GENRE: NA contemporary romance

MODEL: Zoe Chait

add-to-goodreads-button31

SYNOPSIS:

Twenty-year-old Clementine Avery doesn’t mind being called bitchy and closed off. It’s safe, and after being burned by her high school sweetheart and stalked by a professor her freshman year of college, safe sounds pretty damn good.

Her number one rule for survival? No dating. That is until she accidentally signs up for a romance writing class and needs material for her latest assignment. Sexy RA Gavin Murphy is more than happy to play the part of book boyfriend to help Clem find some inspiration, even if that means making out…in the name of research, of course.

As Gavin and Clem grow closer, they get entangled in the mystery surrounding a missing Boston University student, and Clem unwittingly becomes a possible target. Gavin tries to show Clem she can handle falling in love again, but she knows she has to be careful because her heart’s at stake…and maybe even her life.

DEAREST CLEMENTINE is a stand-alone novel with two companion novels. This New Adult contemporary romance series is recommended for readers 18+ due to mature content. Look for the second book, DEAREST DANDELION, this June.

EXCERPT:

The laundry room is dark when we walk in, so Gavin flips on the lights. A row of washers and dryers line both sides of the small room. He opens up a washer and dumps in his basket of clothes.

“Gavin, why are you washing clean laundry?” I can’t help the laugh that escapes.

He drops in a few quarters and starts the machine before he turns to me, grinning.

“I’m helping you get in the zone. Come here.” He wraps his hands around my waist, and I let out a surprised squeak when he lifts me up onto a washer. I can’t believe he just picked me up. Okay, that’s a stupid thought to have. He did carry me home two weeks ago.

His grip is firm on either side of me as he leans down to look into my eyes. I lean back slightly. He’s so far in my personal space that my shadow is crowded.

“Clementine, I want to warn you.” His voice is husky and deep. “I’m going to kiss you, and you’re going to like it. A lot. But I want to be clear that I’m not going to sleep with you because I want you to respect me in the morning.” His mouth lifts up in a wry smile. “This is simply one friend helping out another. Okay?”

Wait. Is he serious?

He must sense my apprehension because he rubs his thumb softly across my cheek. “It’s just an exercise, to get you into your story. I promise.”

I laugh, embarrassed, intrigued, and a whole lot turned on by the idea. He smiles again, but this time it’s different. His eyes darken as his hands glide over my hips. My breath catches in my chest.

“Gavin, I don’t think—“

He rests a finger over my lips.

“I’m doing this in the name of academics. You need inspiration? You’re looking at it. Now shut up and let me kiss you.”

Welcome Jessie Clever

Please welcome author Jessie Clever to the blog today for an interview and excerpt of her new book, A COUNTESS MOST DARING.

JessieClever

Was there anything particularly challenging about writing A COUNTESS MOST DARING?

The history was the most challenging part about writing A Countess Most Daring.  The story takes place at a delicate time during the Napoleonic Wars when Napoleon escapes from exile in Elba.  The story hinges on the interesting relationship between Napoleon, his brother-in-law who was left to rule the Kingdom of Naples where this story takes place and the questionable agreement with Austria for this arrangement to continue.  I did more homework for this book than I ever did in history class during school.

If your heroine had a theme song what would it be?

Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benatar.  Kate Cavanaugh has a way of not taking things lightly.

What character gave you the toughest time to write in the book?

Kate, the heroine, was impossible.  I felt like my mom must have felt when I was a teenager.  No matter what I tried to make her do she wanted to do something else!

What do you like best about being a writer?

I get to make stuff up.  I always strive to give my reader the unexpected.  There’s nothing  better than that.

If you get writer’s block, what do you do to snap yourself out of it?

Living room dance party.   I put on my iPod, some good headphones, and rock out.  Lady Josephine, my Basset hound, thinks I’m crazy, but it works.

What’s one thing that’s always on your desk?

There are two things that are always on my writing desk: a plastic statue of Goofy and a stone armadillo.  Goofy reminds me not to take myself too seriously, and the armadillo was given to me for luck by a friend in literature before I went on a hunt.  There’s nothing better than a lucky armadillo.

What would readers be surprised to know about you?

I’m afraid of stairs.  For all the strong women that I write, I have some amazingly silly phobias.  Stairs being the worse.

If you could have a dinner party with six people, dead or alive, real or fictional, who would you invite and why?

I really just have four people that I would invite: my grandparents, maternal and paternal.  There is so much about them that I never knew I never knew until it was too late.

What’s next for you?

Book Four in the Spy Series, To Save a Viscount!  I promised myself I would take a break after this book, but sometimes the story just will not wait.

A Countess Most Daring Book 3

Excerpt:

Naples, Italy

April 1815

Sunlight struck him full in the face as he emerged from the grated door of their prison and into the bustling streets of a port city on the Mediterranean Sea.  As soon as his feet hit the cobblestone, he dodged to the left, tucking Kate behind him as a cart laden with crates of olives passed just in front of the toes of his boots.

Kate pressed against his back, her heart beating a tattoo into the muscles there.  He felt a corresponding ripple in other parts of his body and swallowed to focus on the task at hand.  They needed to get away from the prison and the authorities that had brought them there.  They needed to find a place to hide until they could regain their composure and perhaps find some suitable clothes for Kate, even if she did make a fetching bar wench.

“Get in the cart.”

Thatcher looked quickly to his right at the cart that had just passed them as if the voice had come from the olives themselves.  But knowing that could not be right, he looked up to the bench.  A small, squat man, thick through the middle and thin at the limbs hovered like a forgotten presence on the worn bench of the rickety cart.  Surely, it was him who had spoken the words, for in the bustle around them, no other person was close enough to utter such words with such clarity for Thatcher to hear.

And the man had spoken in English.

Thatcher turned long enough to scoop Kate into his arms, and together, he launched them into the back of the cart, landing precariously between the rows of olive crates.  The cart lurched forward before his body settled onto the boards of the cart, and Kate’s unbelievable warmth came to rest against the full length of his body.  He let out a rush of air that had nothing to do with escape and possible pursuit.  It was a rush of pure male lust that exited his lungs and with it, his last hope of keeping his hands off of the woman who now lay sprawled across his body.

She struggled against him, likely trying to gain purchase and find a space for herself where there was none in the cart.  Thatcher stilled her with his hands a little too far down on her hips, the tattered skirts of her costume having ridden up to her knees, trapping her legs between his.  Her head came up, and he stared into hazel eyes, murky with a mystery he could not wait to solve.

“Better relax, my friend.  I think we’re going for a ride,” he said, letting his hands slip just a little more down her hips.

And that was when he saw it.  The flash of responding desire in those hazel depths that brought a corresponding flicker from his own awareness.

She wanted him.

She may not know that she wanted him, but there, pressed against each other between crates of olives in a cart that was likely to collapse before safely rescuing them away from their captors, driven by a man they did not know and could possibly have nefarious connections, Matthew Thatcher knew that a lusty bar wench wanted him.  And not just any lusty bar wench.

Katharine Cavanaugh, the Countess of Stirling.

And for the first time in days, he smiled.

Read An Ebook Week & Excerpt

It’s Read An Ebook Week over at Smashwords and IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES is on sale for $1.50

Check out one of my favorite excerpts from the book:

Excerpt:

She held her breath as the tiny boats on the mobile started to move. First one slowly, back and forth, as if it were deliberately being swayed gently, then came the next one, and then the one after that. Each started slowly, but picked up until they were all going. Either she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown or Josh was indeed back. She picked the brand new blanket out of the box and set it over the end of the crib. “They’d all think I’m crazy for thinking you’re here. Heck, I’m even doubting my sanity about all of this.”

One of the boats stilled in response. It was just like him. A smart aleck remark. “Funny,” she muttered. Still the same smart ass she’d fallen in love with. “So funny, Josh. Toy with an already emotional pregnant woman.”

The lone boat began to sway slowly again. The slightest chill brushed against her arm like he’d leaned against her for a moment.

She sighed. “Don’t.” The word was a weak plea not to play games.

The boats slowed down until just the first one was moving back and forth like someone was flicking it with their finger. For a moment she could almost imagine him beside her, leaning on the railing, toying with the soft fabric.

“I keep thinking you would try to show me you’re around. I know that night wasn’t a dream, Josh. You didn’t clean up after yourself.” She laughed softly. “Guess some things never change.”

“Neither do you.” The smile was evident in his voice as he watched her take a few more baby things out from the shopping bag on the change table. He had to smile when he realized how much she was showing. All he wanted was to tell her how much he loved her and how proud he was of her for going through all this and have her for once be able to hear him say it.

He watched her rub her back gingerly as she headed towards the dresser. He noticed the new addition she’d added to the row of photos. It had been taken the same day she’d told him about the baby. He had his head on her shoulder and his hands resting on her hips as she’d been trying to take the picture with her camera. He laughed remembering how many blurred shots she’d gone through before that one had finally been taken. That grin on his face was so silly, but then again, she could make him sillier than he’d ever been in his life and far more serious, too.

She picked the frame up and traced his face with her finger. Josh was rooted to the spot, unable to move. From where he stood her heartache was palpable.

Welcome Elaine Violette

Please welcome author Elaine Violette to the blog today to discuss her upcoming release, A KISS OF PROMISE and share an excerpt with us.

akissofpromise_msr

***

What inspired this story?

Thanks for asking this question! My first Regency novel, Regal Reward, set the stage for A Kiss of Promise. Regal Reward introduces the Blackstone brothers, York and Martin. The story focuses on the elder brother, York, and his obsession to clear his father’s name when he is falsely accused of treason, stripped of his titles and thrown into prison. When York falls in love with Marielle Henley, a rebellious beauty betrothed to his enemy’s son, she becomes a pawn as well as a distraction in York’s fight for justice.  Readers intrigued by both the Blackstone brothers encouraged me to write Martin Blackstone’s story. In A Kiss of Promise, Martin, freed from the scandal surrounding his family, wants nothing to do with England’s aristocracy. He seeks adventure in America but an ocean can’t dissolve the memories of the woman he’s left behind. When her life is threatened, he must re-evaluate his choices and come to her rescue. A Kiss of Promise is journey of healing and love. Because Regal Reward has a special place in my heart, its much loved characters, apart from the hero and heroine, needed to have their stories told and plights resolved.

Do you have a favorite scene or character from the book?

Alaina, my heroine in A Kiss of Promise lives a stormy life of sacrifice and submission.  Her journey through webs of deceit and longing to personal freedom and romance was a pleasure to tell.  I hope my readers are touched by her courage.

Was there anything particularly challenging about writing this?

Oh, yes!  The original version of this story was titled, Lavender Lady, and accepted for publication. Two weeks before its release, I received news no author wants to hear. The copy editor asked me to remove certain aspects of the story, mainly the heroine’s trip to America. She felt it didn’t meet their traditional regency guidelines. Being a true American, I rebelled, insisting that in that time period there were women who boarded ships to America.  My arguments and suggestions were futile so I asked for my rights back.  Authors need to listen to their hearts when changes are requested that war against your own gut feelings.  Most of the time our editors are right on, but if our inner nudging tell us to stand our ground, we need to listen. I shelved the story and wrote another, A Convenient Pretense, published in 2013. Eventually I resubmitted Lavender Lady, making changes that met my professional and creative license as an author and changed the title to A Kiss of Promise. The manuscript was accepted immediately and my new editor placed it in the historical romance genre.  My heroine’s voyage to America remained.

If your heroine had a theme song what would it be?

That’s easy.  “What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson.  Alaina faces challenges that force her into situations that could cause her to turn away in fear and self preservation or face with courage and determination.

Which character is most like you or unlike you?

Alaina.  I won’t say anymore. Only that I can relate to her struggles and, perhaps, many of my readers will be able to as well.

What do you like best about being a writer?  The miracle of inspiration.  I am always amazed at how characters and plots develop and how the written word brings life to our creations.

What would your dream writing space look like? A wall of books behind me and a huge writing desk before me set in front of a large picture window overlooking a vast ocean.  Just the thought of watching and listening to the temperament of waves as they ebb and flow, peacefully or ferociously toward the shore would be my dream of a perfect writing space. I can imagine an ocean of ideas flowing along with the waves.

What’s next for you?

My earlier stories take place in England while characters in A Kiss of Promise voyage to America.  In the manuscript I am presently working on, the setting is nineteenth century New England, a real departure from previous novels.  My inspiration for this story came from a walk in a cemetery and a stone that carried an epitaph that touched me deeply.  I’ve been sitting on this story for a few years while writing two other novels in between. I believe the reason why I have held off on this one is because the inspiration of it so fascinated and affected me that I wasn’t ready to let go of its reality and transfer it into fiction.

Excerpt from A Kiss of Promise:

Martin tried to draw her back, his hands clenching her tighter. “It’ll work out. You won’t have to face any contempt. I owe you that for leaving England without a word to you and after our intimacy. I was wrong.”

“You owe me nothing,” Alaina breathed out, holding back tears. He spoke no words of love or affection, only contrition. He believes he compromised me with a kiss, a kiss that meant nothing more to him than a flirtation.

She had ignored the truth for too long; instead, held on to a dream. If she’d meant more to him, he wouldn’t have left without a pledge to return to her. He pitied her and he would never forget that she’d compromised her reputation. No, he’d done enough. The truth, as painful as it was, caused her to push away from him. She’d rather face humiliation and scorn than accept his sacrificial offer of marriage.

“Are you ready to leave, Alaina?”  Richard asked as he entered the room.

She nodded, glancing back only once before following her brother out the door.

Welcome Andrea R Cooper

Please welcome my first author interview of 2014, Andrea R Cooper to the blog.

vikingfire

Lisa,

Thank you for having me here today.

What inspired this story?

Viking Fire was inspired by the name Lauchlin or Lochlann. I read online that some historians believe this was the Gaelic name for Viking. Since my grandmother’s maiden name was McLauchlin, I was intrigued. Though, my lineage is Scottish (among many other nationalities), the magic and landscape of Ireland made me place the setting there.

Do you have a favorite scene or character from the book?

My favorite character is Bram. He is the cocky, handsome hero. Yet, he has a vulnerable side. I love the teasing that he does with Kaireen—even though she thinks she’s fighting him and his attention, she is truly wrestling with herself and her attraction to him.

Who would your ideal cast be if a movie was made?

Bram – A younger Travis Fimmel or Alexander Ludwig

Kaireen – Rachel Hurd Wood

Elva – Julie Walters (in her natural silver hair)

What do you like best about being a writer?

I love discovering the characters and the story as I write. I don’t do outlines or plotting. I just have an idea, a character, or a basic ending in mind. The journey the characters take from the beginning to the end is mine as well because I do not have a map. Which is opposite of how I am in real life, I love to plan and know ahead of time what I am going to do.

What would readers be surprised to know about you?

I never read Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Terry Goodkind, or any famous fantasy/ paranormal writer until I was in my mid-twenties. Any novels, movies, etc. that had magic or mythical creatures was taboo in my house growing up–so naturally I craved them. I still have George R.R. Martin on my TBR list, and I am addicted to The Game of Thrones show.

I am also a gamer. Give me anything with magic, dragons, hack-n-slash, dungeon crawler game and I’m giddy.

What’s next for you

I am working on revisions for Son of Dragons, Book Two in The Garnet Dagger trilogy. And beginning a major re-write of War of Darkness, Book Three in the trilogy. I am also adding a paranormal shift to a Native American historical romance I wrote years ago.

Viking Fire Excerpt:

“The bedchambers are upstairs.”

“Lead the way, then, my lady.” He grinned. His smile did not falter her resolve to be rid of him; instead, she stomped each foot on the stone steps.

“Our room.” She waved her hand as she stood at the threshold.

He moved passed her and into the room. “Tis the first you admit we marry.”

“No. I said no such—”

He pulled her in his embrace and she went rigid. She opened her mouth to scream, but as she drew a breath, his lips crushed hers. Tingles of warmth crept from inside her to the tips of her toes. Her mind raced, demanding she be free, while her traitorous body melted in his arms. His kiss became gentle and sparked a craving inside her for more. His mouth opened, offering her to taste secrets. She slackened against him as his tongue played across her lips, stroking, and numbing her thoughts. He did not force his way further, but ended the kiss with her lips yearning for his. Then he stepped back.

“Your lips and eyes speak of your love.” He beamed at her frown. “Now I am sure of your passion for me.”

“No.” That was enough! He had overstepped his bounds with his prideful arrogant assumptions. “You are mistaken; I wish to never marry you.” She would not fall in love with him. No matter his handsome face. She must not allow herself to acknowledge that she liked it when he kissed her. She would never be free if he became the laird over her.

“Aye, your kiss spoke more than you know.” He chuckled and held her hand kissing her palm. “In time the rest of you will agree as well.”

Andrea’s Bio: Growing up in Houston, Texas, Andrea has always created characters and stories. But it wasn’t until she was in her late twenties that she started writing novels.

What happened that ignited the writing flame in her fingers? Divorced, and disillusioned by love songs and stories. They exaggerate. She thought. Love and Romance are not like that in the real world. Then she met her husband and realized, yes love and romance are exactly like the songs and stories say. She is now a happy wife, and a mom to three kids (two boys and a girl).

Andrea writes paranormal and historical romance. When not writing or reading, one may find Andrea dancing in Zumba.

She believes in the power of change and counting each moment as a blessing. But most importantly, she believes in love.
