Hi Cheral,

Thank you for the question. Since both of my books are collections, and very different ones at that, I thought I'd tell you my favourite stories in each one.

In my book EVERY HOUSE IS HAUNTED, my favourite story would probably be "The Candle." I feel it hits the right note of quiet horror that I enjoy most of all. I also like "Aces" because it's so weird and it marks a special time in my writing life.

In my other book, SUPERNOIRTURAL TALES, I would say "The Brick" is my favourite. It's the longest story in the book, and I think it's one of the best things I've ever written. It's also full of Easter Eggs for the Felix Renn novel series which will appear one of these days, hopefully sooner rather than later.

Thanks again for the question!(less)

"Very fun collection of short horror stories! “Every House Is Haunted” had a great variety of supernatural elements in its stories. I loved the witchcraft in “Aces,” as well as the apocalyptic world in “Winter Hammock.” I was really immersed in “The D" Read more of this review »

“You are what you do, so you have to do what you want to be. We are how we spend our time.

If you want to be super good at texting and watching Netflix, you should text and watch Netflix all day—'cause you'll get really good at it.

If, in your dreams, you would rather be good at something else, then you should spend your time doing that thing. Don't wait for it to come to you.

You are how you spend your time.”

“Q: Do you have any advice for upcoming writers who want to pen weird stories?

A: READ, damn it. Fill your brain to the bursting point with the good stuff, starting with writers that you truly enjoy, and then work your way backward and outward, reading those writers who inspired the writers you love best. That was my path as far as Weird/Horror Fiction, starting with Lovecraft, and then working my way backward/outward on the Weird Fiction spiderweb. And don’t limit your reading. Read it all, especially non-fiction and various news outlets. You’d be surprised by how many of my story ideas were born while listening to NPR, perusing a blog, or paging through Vanity Fair.

Once you have your fuel squared away, just write what you love, in whatever style and genre. You’ll never have fun being someone you’re not, so be yourself. When a singer opens their mouth, what comes out is what comes out.

Also, don’t be afraid to fail, and don’t be afraid to walk away. Writing isn’t for everyone, and that’s totally fine. One doesn’t need to be a writer to enjoy being a reader and overall fan of genre or wider fiction.”
