Election Thoughts
Loves,
Well… that would have to be one of the weirdest elections ever.
Australia just had its vote…. and we still don’t know who won. We won’t know for sure for a few more days at least.
What we do know is this:
There were some surprise winners this election.
Pauline bloody Hanson (and more from the One Nation party) + Fred Nile in the Senate. My least favourite politician in the country re-elected – George Christensen.
I’m sad that racist, homophobic, sexist views are held by some of our elected leaders. I’m so sorry if you are feeling unheard, unconsidered & unsafe from this election.
I don’t know the answer.
What I do know is this: I promise I’ll keep turning up everyday. Keep doing the best I can. Keep trying to help where I can, fix what I can fix, and tell my elected leaders: the voice of hatred and ignorance is not my voice, and not what you have been elected for.
I hereby pledge to keep loving and caring fiercely and tenderly. To keep caring for this earth and its people – all of us – its children, women, men, refugees, immigrants and disadvantaged.
I know that those people in parliament cannot fix the problems of this earth and all its people. I can’t hold them solely responsible. I know so much of the responsibility belongs to me. There is still much I can do, we can all do.
Keep turning up every single day to create the world we want.

Dear Lost Creativity
I’ve been lost lately.
Burnt out, empty,
nothing to say.
I have this well you see
dip the hand-hewn bucket
it returns to the surface,
brimming with creativity
brimming with art and song and stories and magic.
I was so used to this well
never faltering
never failing.
I have been drinking from it for years.
17 editions of books, 103 courses, thousands of illustrations, dozens of journals
to be exact.
But one day I turned up
and all there was
was the distant thud
of wood bucket
against parched soil.
The well was desolate.
So was I.
There used to be a strong voice in here,
you know.
One of Great Spirit.
One I need only open my ears for,
and it would spin the stories through me.
I was her dictation assistant
I was just her vessel.
But now.. now…
There’s only an echo chamber
of a thousand voices
all merged and muffled
into one distant din.
And I’m sad and I’m lost and I don’t know how to magic it back.
I can tell you why the well went dry,
why the voice went silent.
It’s a perfectly reasonable response to the circumstances, you know?
I’ve worked too hard for too long.
I haven’t taken breaks.
I’ve moved a lot.
My company has doubled in size again.
The pace is faster.
I feel like I can’t keep up.
I’ve reacted instead of created.
I’m breaking all my golden rules.
I’ve worked too many weekends.
I’ve forgotten to have outside hobbies.
I’ve got a vast deficit in fun and ridiculous aimless adventures.
I have small children.
Criticism, trolling, online vitriol.
Social media comparisonitis.
I feel simultaneously exposed and also not seen at all.
And this will sound remarkably 1%ish, but having a public figure is becoming more and more difficult to manage. Live events and meet and greets leave me reeling and empty for days, weeks, months.
But most of all,
the reason is…
I haven’t tended to the well.
Haven’t filled it back up.
Haven’t cleaned it up.
Haven’t thought about it.
Just expected it to be there when I needed it.
Hiro tells me:
“Leonie, your energy is a bank account. You’ve been withdrawing large amounts for a very long time without putting anything in. What else could happen but for your bank account to get overdrawn?”
And I shrug my shoulders, nod miserably.
I don’t know how to change it.

I know I must find it though.

I’ve taken to journalling each day.
When lost, return to the basics.
Julia Cameron’s prescription usually bears good results.
Tiny answers come to me one by one.
Nothing to change the world.
No instant healing.
I’m not expecting it to.
But 100 small changes will add up.

This is no one’s responsibility but my own.
My team can’t save me, my husband can’t save me.
Not when I’m running from myself.

Last night, in the car, hurtling through the dark.
David Whyte’s voice weaves its way out through speakers.
His words make my heart still.
“There are three kinds of marriages.
Your marriage with another, with the people you have committed to love and respect through the big and the bad. Your husband, your children, your friends.
Your marriage with your work. That thing you do that you commit to love and turn up for no matter how hard it is.
Your marriage with yourself, the one you cannot leave.
And all three of these kinds of marriages are equally important. And if we put all our attention on one or two, if we neglect some of those marriages, it is to the detriment of all three marriages.
And what is needed in all three of those marriages is conversation. Presence. Reminding them you care enough to listen and tend to that relationship. Making time for that marriage because it is important to you.”
I sit in the car for a long while after that,
crying.
Thinking about all the ways I dropped the conversation with myself and my work. All the ways I forgot to love and romance those two marriages.
Without them, life has lost its colour… my heart has lost its juice.

A long wander at the Botanic Gardens. Obviously, this is the desert section. At least… I hope it was. Otherwise they may need to rethink their hiring decisions for their gardeners! Haaaaa!

Reading in bed with tea & biscuits on a rainy day. Mr D just read the first chapter of this and pushed it into my hands, telling me it was essential I read it.
“But I don’t want to stop you from reading it!” I said.
“Never fear,” he replied. “I’m going to take a nap.”
This man has some damn good priorities.
And he was right, of course. That book is INCREDIBLE!!!!
Every Sunday afternoon, I have my calendar booked out.
It says “SOLO MAMA RETREAT!”
I take giddily to my bed and read and art journal and do e-courses and write…

It’s raining and it’s dark and it’s time to write and draw and dream in the sweet silence.
It’s only taken me 18 months… But I’ve finally found another private Pilates instructor since leaving Kuranda. Having one come to my house is the only way I actually fit it in each week. This way the kids can run amok and husband can join in.
It felt like a huge splurge when I first started doing it… But it is so so worth it! A good investment for my body, mind and spirit. There can only be good knock-on effects for my company from that!!!
These kittens. Wild and tangly and hard to corral and oh so sweet. Adventures with them are both mayhem and magic.
National Museum of Australia was brilliant – especially the Playschool exhibit which was surprisingly touching, a little microcosm of culture changing and flashbacks to my own childhood.
We also managed to get there when the cafe wasn’t chockablockfulla.
Amazing views over the lake and the food was scrumptious!
(And my kids didn’t freak the fuck out at any time. It was a damn near MIRACLE GUYS!)
I went and spoke at the Canberra Wise Women on creativity.

[New Course Release] Smart Time Management
Hola possums,
Last year at the Ausmumpreneur conference and awards, I heard the incredible Kate Christie speak on time management. Now, usually, when I hear “time management” I want to roll my eyes so far back into my head I look like I’m possessed… but Kate actually talks about time management in a way that is non-stabby… and I learned SO MUCH from her in that hour. I took SO MANY notes and actually IMPLEMENTED THEM!
She is one bloody wise cookie… she’s real and grounded and she’s a mum and she doesn’t tell you the way to get more out of your day is to wake up at 5am. I SWEAR TO GOD I WILL CUT A BITCH IF I HAVE TO DO THAT SHIT.
Anyways, I met her afterwards… I’d set up camp outside the toilet door with some other gorgeous souls I’d met in the toilet (DUNNY BUDDIES!!!!) and we were doing some impromptu business brainstorming on scavenged pens on backs of paper. I’m sure I was graceful and composed as always… I’m pretty sure I screeched “OMG YOU ARE AMAZING AND HOLY FUCK I LOVE YOUR DRESS!”
She was wearing this ridiculously adorable green geometric number. She proceeded to tell me hilarious stories of how she bought it in New York in a summer that was so hot she was sweating out her tits. Now, I cannot say whether I’m paraphrasing here or not, it is likely I am, I’m fairly sure she just said she was sweating, and I immediately thought “UGH I HATE BEING SWEATY AND HAVING A WET SOGGY BRA ON AND UGH SWEATY BOOBS IN SUMMER”, but now and forever more, it is in my head that Kate Christie told me soggy boob stories.

This. This was the name we were going to call our Beth before she told us in no uncertain terms that she was a Bethany. Still, I think of this name today… The name we called her while she lived in my belly… The name that got me through Hyperemesis Gravidarum… The one I clung to like a song and a prayer and a promise. It gave me the fire to bring her into the world. It was a mantra and a blessing. And today, I wanted to set it free into the world. Maybe it belongs to one of your babies yet to come… One still singing on the otherside waiting to come through… Bursting with joy and energy. I’m sure her and Bethany knew each other and planned this all out.
I commissioned an adult-sized weighted blanket to help when I’m feeling overwhelmed/over-sensoried. It’s just arrived so obv I needed to try it out! Does feel rather calming. I bought it from an Australian company called Calming Moments.

It’s so scary to do sometimes… I make sure I ask a lot of stupid questions! I’m all about creating sustainable, long term, grounded wealth so that I can always take care of my family & have a lasting impact with philanthropy too.

Best friend & best COO in the world. She has the matching one. To remind me that we are soul family. I’m so lucky.
Fifteen years ago today I went on my first date with that utterly scrumptious IT guy from work who I had fallen in love with at first sight and spent months walking into walls whenever he said hello to me. I broke my computer a lot just so he would lean over me to fix it. I finally got the courage to ask him out after I found out his last name was Dawson, and I, being an obsessed Dawson’s Creek fan, had declared a year before to my best friend that I would one day marry a Dawson.
Anyways, we went to the beach and he grabbed my hand and he hasn’t let go. We moved in together a month later. Ten years to the day we went back to that same spot and got married with a one year old fairy daughter on my hip.
We’ve always been married, him and I. Always been all in, equal partners, lovers, best friends, teachers, students, muses for each other. Our marriage vows in recent years have been enacted in full… In sickness and in health. I’ve had my share of awful health moments where Chris has become my carer and solo papa for our children. We were just talking through what may happen with this foot of mine and the recovery process… And I know that he will take care of me and the kids like he has done before. When I ask him about it, he says “We never know what will happen with health… We just take care of our family day by day, whatever that means.”
He has loved me and supported me and believed in all my dreams and given me the time and support to achieve them. I couldn’t be more grateful. We’ve been stubborn at staying together… There is magic here between us… Mystery still to be unfolded… A love story still being discovered. I think it will always be that way. He will always be utterly familiar and a divine mystery to me all at the same time. 15 years, 8 moves to different towns, 5 houses bought, 2 dogs and most importantly: 2 daughters and 1 family.
Thanks for saying yes to this grand adventure, Dawsy. You are my very favourite.

Philosophical Question: if, every time you give your kids a bath, the youngest one takes a shit in it, are they dirtier before a bath or after?
I ask myself this question every fucking week as I play that age old classic game “Emergency evacuate the children from turd bath and spend next 30 minutes fishing for watery shits and disinfecting the bath.”

MRI day for ole Limpy Leg Leonie. I feel a bit jittery but so relieved to get some clear answers on the damage to my foot so we can work on a healing plan. So grateful to modern medicine… To live in this time when my foot has a chance to be fixed. Going to take it easy this afternoon… Have a nap after this morning’s long scan. I have another scan this afternoon as well.

How’s this for magical synchronicity…
When we bought this house off the internet, I knew we had made the right decision because on the contract, I saw the old owner had the same first name as my beloved grandmother who had died a year before.
It really is a gentle, loving home with the most amazing fairy gardens… I feel so lucky that we get to be the owners of it now.
Anyways, I’ve become penpals with the old owner… I send her pictures of the kids enjoying her garden so she knows her flowering legacy lives on, she tells me where the watering system is.
And it turns out… how bizarre… that she too is an author who wrote books in this house…
AND (!!!!!) when she told me what she’d written, I gasped – we already had one of her books in our bookshelves!
Total divine synchronicity! I’m feeling amazed at the magic of the world!
Spent the afternoon in strategy meetings with Sonya and conducting interviews to find our new Project Manager.
This photo of us is from years ago… We’ve been besties for much longer than we’ve been working together! It was a big leap for the both of us to make for her to start working for me…
But honestly, it’s been a pretty seamless partnership. Same values, same gut instincts, same way of working and thinking.
She’s a total rock with grounded advice… A healing balm in the months this year that have been tumultuous and hard. I’ve had to make some hard decisions to protect myself & my team & my vision this year… Decisions I cried and cried over… But I knew she & our team of divine goddesses would have my back… And they did and have, over and over.
Surround yourself with the bestest if people, my loves. Lovingly let go of the rest. It will suck for a bit when you do let go, but it will get better and better and better than before.
Daily routine: Do school run in morning & do errands with husbo & wee one. Come home and within 0.3 seconds of walking in the door, get in pyjamas. Stay in them for rest of day. #workfromhome #pyjamasuniform

Sunday afternoon sabbatical… Afternoon in bed, art journaling… Just what I need each week to fill up for my week.
Me when I’m on the couch watching TV with hunky… Always surrounded by journals & collage & planners & crafting shit… Always creating even in chill out time!!!!
Ecstatic. Just made an incredible hire. Someone who I’ve known, love and respected for over a decade. Someone who is one of the best, smartest people I know. Someone who was on my “dream team” list along with Sonya (who I hired in January!). Someone who mentored me at work when I was 20 and told me she would be working for me one day. I can’t believe I get to work with people like this. I can’t believe they have so much faith in me.
I frankly don’t feel good enough… But I’ll take it. I am one lucky, lucky, teary lady today. Will introduce y’all to her when she starts. But for now… I am giddy with possibility at what we could do next with another superhero on our team. Me & Starry are sending you big love.

I’m speaking about creativity with a photographer & singer next week…

I’ve been in my hermit cave for a bit.

I’m not sure when I’ll do another live speaking event for the time being… I tend to go through big cycles of being “out there” and then going underground for a while. It’s my natural creative ebb and flow. So, just a warning if you’ve been wanting to see me speak & have been putting it off, you should probably get onto it.
