In Praise Of Ordinary Christmases…

Hola dearhearts,

I’m not sure what it is I need to say, and yet I know I must say it.

I want to say:

I hope you are having a merry Christmas filled with love and kindness and laughter

but I also want to say:

It’s okay if you’re not. Truly, it’s okay.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t have to be good. Whatever it needs to be, it is.

I think for a long time I hunted and yearned and grieved over Christmasses being imperfect. How in some way, how good one single day was would be the measurement of my life.

But it’s not. It’s truly not.

The measurement of my life is the ordinary days. The little moments adding up with each other to culminate in a life well loved.

I want to say it’s okay if things aren’t perfect. If you don’t have everyone together. If you don’t have a big, happy, functional extended family (or any kind of family at all). If everyone isn’t happy. If the kids are whiny or you are whiny or there are no kids and instead of noise there is silence.

It’s okay. It’s okay. It’s okay.

You’re not broken, you are whole.

Christmas wasn’t meant to be anything but what it is:

Whatever appears for you. Whatever your day is composed of right now.

Whatever happens.

Sometimes it can be so hard to actually just genuinely relax and have fun and enjoy when there’s so much external pressure for Christmas to be HAPPY! FULL OF FAMILY! PERFECTLY COMPOSED! NO PROBLEMS EVER!

And the pressure builds up until we inevitably feel overwhelmed, crabby and heartsick at why our life doesn’t look like the way we think others’ lives are.

If nothing more, Christmas serves as a time for us to pause in the stillness before another year begins. To look back and see what just happened. The blessings and the shit and the hard stuff and the miracles, all tied together in a bundle of a year. Who you were a year ago. Who you are now. You might be feeling a little more war-torn but I can bet a hundred bucks you are wiser, deeper and lovelier than you could ever know.

That’s all my darlings.

Wherever you are:

in the midst of the BEST DAY EVER or the Shittiest Crapfest of the Century or something I like to call a Festival of Awkward, or something in between:

I want you to know you’re okay. You’re whole. Everything is going to be okay. It’s okay for things to be how they are today.

Your whole life is waiting for you. All the ordinary days to come.

And it’s going to be bloody beautiful.

My Top Books For 2016: An Illustrated Reading Log

So… as you all know… I have a yearly ritual.

I read a shit tonne of books.

Then I share about what I read and the best books of the year in an annual blog post.

Oh! Yay! So that means it’s the fifth anniversary! AWWWWW!

I didn’t realise that till just this moment… but it makes me even more squeeful.

This year, I did something a little different.

I kept an illustrated reading log, and rated each book out of 5 hearts.

many of these books have been around for a good while. This isn’t a list of 2015 best new releases. This is an autobiographical look at my own personal reading list.

THE STATE OF THE READING HABITS

But first – a my regular report on my reading habits.

HOW MANY BOOKS I READ

I read 85 books this year, 35ish of those being trashy romantic novels. Specifically, my genre of trash is sweet Victorian/Regency romance (think spinsters fucking dukes) where there’s a bit of smut, but not the whole plot.

My goal was 52 this year, so I feel groovy with that. It’s not my biggest number yet – I think I read over 250 the year that I discovered trashy romance  on my Kindle. Still, much of those were small novellas, whereas now I read longer trashy romance.

WHAT I READ MY BOOKS ON

Over the years they have gone from:

paper books only to
Kindle obsessed to
a turn back to paper books (keeping Kindle to read trashy romance novels on) to
paperbooks and including audiobooks in the mix.

I didn’t change how I read this year apart from I leant even further away from Kindle. I think I only read one or two books this year on Kindle.

I discovered instead that I could buy my beloved trashy romance novels fairly cheap at bookstores, and in second hand stores, so I’ve taken to buying them by the barrelful, and then exchanging them at the second hand store when done.

Honestly, I love reading on paper, and feeling like I am totally away from screens. Feels more relaxing.

I’ve also started taking regular long baths. Paper books are way better for bath reads than Kindle!

Take A Peek Inside: 2017 Shining Year Life Goals Workbook!!!

I wanted to share with you inside looks at each of our products for the 2017 goals planner collection!

This is the original and the most popular product in the collection… everything else was born from this!

I made myself a life goals planner in the summer of December 2009. I was 6 months pregnant, and I knew my life was about to change.

And honestly? I was feeling pretty terrified. I felt like I was on a train I couldn’t get off.

And so I spent three days over Christmas painting and writing myself a book… to give myself the gift of goals… of a reminder of my dreams to come back to when I lost myself. It was like painting myself a life raft when I was lost at sea.

I was right about the train that was coming… the transition into motherhood, the subsequent fall into Post Natal Depression and the separation of my parents left me reeling and breathless. I barely knew who I was anymore.

But there was this book. This workbook I’d created for myself, of my goals and my dreams and who I was.

I clung to it, and put together back my life, piece by piece. It was the map for me when things fell apart, the operating instructions of my soul.

I didn’t have an office back then – we lived in a tiny one bedroom cottage that was overflowing already with my stay-at-home husband, our baby girl and our two dogs. So I had a canvas bag I called “My Office” and I would take it with me everywhere. I’d traipse across the paddock over to the main street of the small town we were living in. I’d hunt for an open cafe, or I’d sit in the library with the water-stained roof from the latest cyclone, or I’d go work up the top of the enormous fig tree in the local park (usually filled with kissing and smoking teenagers and on one memorable occasion, a snake). “My Office” bag had two things – my laptop (a Macbook Pro with a Pocahontas artwork skin on it) and a binder with my workbook in it.

I decided this was the way I would undertake my own soul recovery… through creating and sharing, here on my blog, and in the Academy (then known as the Goddess Circle)… and by staying close and true to my goals scribed in my workbook.

It did get better, in time.

The big waves subsided. Counselling and medication helped. And my well-loved, dog-eared workbook was there every inch of the way.

You see, these workbooks were never really made for anyone else. When I thought I’d share them online as a printable PDF in December 2009, I had NO idea they would go on to be used by over a quarter of a million people.

But while I was out there, roaming trees and drinking endless pots of tea in cafes until they kicked me out, remembering my soul and my dreams and crafting a life anew with the workbooks… so was countless other women.

They have their own stories of how this workbook changed them, their life, their creativity, their family, their dreams…

Of how the workbooks were their own soul recovery, their own mudmap for a better, braver, brighter life.

But there they were. The first year, there were 1,000 of them.

The next year there were 3,000.

And each year since, these women come back for the next one.

And they wrote in. They shared their stories.

Of using the books to grow and heal. A map for them to find their soul’s path throughout the year.

They claim back the mantle of their own creative power to carve their own destiny.

They say: My story will not define me. I will.

They become who they were meant to be.

These women, they know that scribing down your goals and dreams is a sacred act.

It is not a selfish act. It is an act that will (and does) change the world.

In these times, now, more than ever… we need strong, empowered women.

Women who know what they want and how to get it.

We forgot for so long what it was to be this powerful and empowered. It was stripped away from us in the centuries of patriarchal control, of women not being allowed to make their own decisions, or vote, or work outside the home, or travel without a man.

And the world suffered from that. Because we – the women – are the ones that hold the world and all of its children, people and animals in our hearts. We are the nurturers, the creators, the intuitives, the empaths, the sensitives… we are the ones that will change the world for the better.

And we will do it when we remember how to bring our dreams and goals into the world.

Behind the Scenes

Here’s some behind the scenes photos from the shoot. I also wrote longer about the experience of a day long shoot in the Highly Sensitive CEO.

I gots my hairs and makeup did by Sandy.

I’ve always been super hesitant to get hair and makeup done because I prefer looking natural. For filming I need some extra colour because my Danish fairness whites me out completely on camera, and when I do makeup myself it looks like a disaster zone because I’m blind as fuck and also can’t makeup to save myself.

I’m grateful Sandy gets the natural look I’m after and makes it happen.

The set – looks bonkers here with all the stands and setup, but on camera you just see the pretty bits!

In bed between takes… little moments of quiet to fill my introvert well during a big day.

I made the Screencraft film crew do Awkward Prom Photo with me after we finished filming. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I LOVE IT SOOOOO BAD. Also… it’s quite the feat for me to be the smalles person in a prom photo… I’m 5’10 so you can make wild guesses at how tall everyone else was!

Me and my soul brother Miles… aka the autocue guy from Screencraft … he encourages me to be as ridiculous as possible on camera because it gives him the giggles. Totally separated at birth!

Shooting the moody scene that you’ll see in the video… this was a last minute idea of mine (of course… they always are) We ended up blocking the set off with curtains and just having one spotlight. Sammy the adorable camera guy had muchos fun getting the slow mo camera working and doing ridiculous moody shots for that vignette. He was so happy with them he said it would go in his show reel for the year. HA! Always happy to be a model for show reels!

Also: related but unrelated… I just started diving into the rabbit hole of Ancestry.com and have discovered my heritage leads back to England, Wales and Denmark. Which maybe is the reason for my obsession for UKTV? Either way… I feel like I need to come visit y’all in my mother countries! (Maybe when Beth is no longer a toddler because travelling with small children makes me want to stab myself in the face with a cucumber.)

So, all that to say: UK/Europe/Africa: your books are COMING. I am so freakin’ sorry that you’ve had to wait longer than everyone else… but the wait is nearly over!
