Leonie Does TV: What I’ve Been Watching

Pooky bears,

What have I been up to?

WELL I AM GLAD YOU ASKED.

All the things. I’ve been up to ALL THE FUCKING THINGS.

Firstly: I’ve been reading a lot of books and blogs & watching TV a lot.

I fucking loved Anne with an E. And Love on the Spectrum. And Enola Holmes.

I also watched some comedy specials.

And I couldn’t just watch comedy shows. I had to draw the comics at the same time.

Because what does Leonie easily get? BORED. So what must Leonie do? KEEP HANDS BUSY WHILE MIND SOAKS UP LOLZ.

Gosh, it’s a REAL surprise that I got diagnosed with ADHD alongside ye olde autismz right?

First up: I can’t stop thinking about this chick because she’s just so gloriously fucking wild and she makes me want to be even bolder and braver.

BEHOLD. BRIDGET EVERETT.

When I first saw her open for an Amy Schumer special a few years ago, I didn’t get it at all. But now I do.

Fuck she’s glorious. She’s feminist + sexy + irreverent + subversive. I am INTO IT.

I bought Bridget Everett: Gynaecological Wonder on iTunes. I think you can also get it on Amazon Prime in the US. I watched a bunch of her short sets on Youtube first, got addicted and then bought. I laffed myself senseless.

I watched James Acaster’s 4 part Repertoire series on Netflix a few years ago – it is genius. My youngest kid likes the way he moves his body and she finds him Very Funny. She even went so far to say that he was Her Favourite James In The Whole Wide World and I said HOW VERY DARE YOU JAMES TAYLOR IS THE ONLY JAMES THERE EVER WAS AND WILL BE. And she said “Oh Mummy, you’re funny.” But I was SERIOUS.

Anyways, Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999 is his new work. It’s fairly different from Repertoire in that it’s more personal. He talks candidly about his mental health issues and episodes, and sometimes it feels a wee bit like Hannah Gadsby’s groundbreaking Nanette. If, you know, Hannah’s girlfriend left her for Mr Bean. Which absolutely did happen to James. And he goes into heartbreaking & hilarious detail about it.

So yes. James Acaster. Nowhere near the #1 James in the world, because all the top 100 James are James Taylor. But a funny fucker nonetheless.

Righto, that’s all. Email me with TV, movie + comedy recommendations if you please!

Big love,

P.S. Two posts in two days. Does this mean I’m BACK? Nope. It means my brain is getting a wee bit full from all the stuff I’ve been collecting, and the only way to organise it all is to write about it all. SO… ENJOY!

Scrapbook: Brought to you by my Wet Ass Panda Bear

Dearests,

During this fallow restorative phase, I’ve swapped my focus from CREATE > CONSUME to CONSUME CONSUME CONSUME. I mean… it makes sense. I created a shit tonne last month (including 30 days of blogging & podcasting), and have been on a creative roll for months (including creating Sales Star). It’s about time I rest on my laurels and soak in other people’s creations instead of birthing my own!

I still am not yet “back to work” yet, I’m still waiting for that instinctive GO button to light up green… but I wanted to share with you some of the goodies I’ve been consuming lately with great gusto.

If you don’t own all of SARK’s books already, OMG WOT ARE YOU EVEN DOING WITH YOUR LIFE GO NOW AND FEAST UPON THEIR RICHES.I was out partaying with one of my young friends in their 20s (because I’m like SO HIP GUYZ FIRE EMOJI FINGERNAIL EMOJI 100 EMOJI ALL THE EMOJIS) and as we were driving back, she played this song for me. And as we drove along the ocean road in the dark, we yell-sang this song, then played it again. It’s hilarious & glorious & everything. And that memory of us, driving along, singing our hearts out to this song, will be one of my favourite memories of this year.

I think what I like about writing and reading blogs is that it’s pretty close to writing letters. Remember those? There’s something way more intimate about this kind of “keeping in touch” than the social media kind. It’s like slow food or slow fashion. It takes more time, but that also means it takes more *thought*, more *heart*.

I will never not love blogging.

My Foster Daughter’s First Birthday. UFFFFF THERE GOES MY HEART.I loved this article on the brilliance of showrunner Shonda Rhimes. Especially since it was written before the release of Bridgerton & some people in the industry were like “Yeah but was she worth the money Netflix paid to sign her?” And now Bridgerton is the most popular show on Netflix. I can’t WAIT for the next 7 seasons. I’m especially hopeful that it will have LGBTQIA+ love stories. I mean Benedict? Eloise? I fell down a rabbit hole researching The Basecamp Situation (aka whereby the software company’s two straight white male founders decided they didn’t actually want to tackle racism in their company, and 30% of their staff quit). I discovered Susan Branch and I don’t know how I didn’t know about her sooner because she is all kinds of wonderful. A prolific author, watercolour artist, illustrator, blogger… who has been creating since the 80s and has built the most amazing readership of “girlfriends.” It’s everything I’ve ever wanted to be and more. I’ve ordered some of her books + she is just delicious.Ha! Clearly I’ve been consuming and collecting like a wild thang!

This doesn’t even count the glorious TV and books I’ve been inhaling whole. I’ll share those with you in another post soon because that’s a WHOLE THING all of it’s own. I’m like a firehose of information when all you needed was a wee cup.

Righto, I’m off to flop about some more.

Big love,

P.S. Also, I have started DIY projects around my house. And by DIY, I mean “paint everything in sight turquoise.” STAND BY.

Diary: 7 Little Things

Dearests,

A list post today. Because I don’t have much brain power for anything else.

I have big weekend plans. See above. I treated myself to a new batch of graphic novels on a bunch of topics. I’m excited. We are also forecast rain which is SPLENDID. Rain + books = ultimate sensory relief. (You can find my yearly best books list here, incase you’re needing some new reads.)We had visitors for a few days and it was THE LOVELIEST. And so much socialising also had me in autistic shutdown afterwards. My auditory & speech function shut down a bit, and my brain felt like it was on fire at the edges. Am recovering now with a very quiet routine, weighted blankets, essential oils & all the rest. Sometimes it really shits me that I can’t just have a fun time with people and not have a sensory hangover afterwards.I mused to my husband that sometimes I’m not sure what’s my personality, and what’s my ASD. His response: “Ya know, I just don’t see it like that. Sure, you’ve got a diagnosis. But most of all, you’re Leonie. You’ve always been Leonie. That’s the most important thing.” I think I’ll get that tattooed on my arse. Our visitors were lovely relatives have been married for close to 50 years. It’s a real joy to spend time with people who’ve been in love for so long and are still so clearly in love. It’s like a little portal into the future of what me and Mr D will be.I may have to start my next 21 day challenge a little bit later in May. Mama’s brain needs a reset from new information. We have a new bird friend to add to our backyard regulars. Currently we have three pee wees named Jerry, Gerry and Jeri, and a magpie, Nut, who is a beleaguered single dad to two adolescents named Cashew and Almond. There are many more, but these are the ones we have see daily and have attached extensive backstories and personalities to. Now there is a new bird on the block – an eagle who has taken to flying over our property, calling distinctively. It’s a beautiful sound. I have named him Terry Muller, after a childhood friend who passed away a couple of years ago. Terry always told everyone he saw that they looked beautiful today, and I like to think that eagle is doing the same. The Prices-Are-Doubling sale is almost finished, along with a month of daily blogging and podcasting. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to create and share. I need a wee nap, and then I can get on with all the new goodies I want to make next.

Big love,
