Miami-Christmas

This year, since we have 5 Wednesdays in December, let’s celebrate each Writer’s Quote Wednesday week by finding quotes from authors about Christmas.

quote-Writer's Quote Wednesday-The Writer Next Door

I love the Christmas holiday because of the way it makes me feel. Most people around me seem to be more charitable, patient, tolerant, and empathetic during this time of year. There’s a spirit of generosity and goodwill in the air. There are twinkly lights and colorful decorations everywhere you look. That part of you that sings, laughs out loud, makes you smile for no reason, giggle at the silliest things, and allows you take things in stride––comes alive. Suddenly, you don’t sweat the small stuff and you look forward to tomorrow with hope. I wish the spirit of Christmas could linger all year long.

quotes-Writer's Quote Wednesday

Writing style like any other type of style helps writers express who they are. A style reveals both the writer’s personality and voice. That being said, I must admit that I am a bit of a literary rebel. I’ve read many books about the rules of writing, grammar, and punctuation but when I sit down to write, all the rules go out the window. I love learning new things and I’m constantly trying to improve my writing. You can say I’m an avid reader and professional student. I do respect most of the laws of writing but I write as the words flow out of my mind and worry about editing later after my thoughts are expressed. I’m not going to worry about some over-the-top grammarians and I’m going to go ahead and split that infinitive, end a few sentences with propositions (It’s not even clear how never-end-a-sentence-with-a-preposition got to be a rule), I will use sentence fragments (sparingly), and if I’m inspired to write a one sentence paragraph––I shall have no fear. I have lost count of how many amazing books I’ve read, written by writers well known for being great, that break these rules (and more). In all cases, editing comes after my first draft is written. I believe this guarantees my writing is authentic and influenced only by my muse.

Happy Thanksgiving Day!

“We write every day, we fight every day, we think and scheme and dream a little dream every day. Manuscripts pile up in the kitchen sink, run-on sentences dangle around our necks. We plant purple prose in our gardens and snip the adverbs only to thread them in our hair. We write with no guarantees, no certainties, no promises of what might come and we do it anyway. This is who we are.”

A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.

The only important thing in a book is the meaning that it has for you.

A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading.
