One True Love by Cheryl Seagraves
In his eyes I saw the sunrise
a fumbling first kiss
a naive true love wish
too young to love
too soon to know
that love could create
my reason, my fate
a beating heart
a living breath
rosy cheeks
giggles and squeaks
I quiet the cries
I dry those eyes
I watch the love blossom and grow
now experienced, old enough to know
the reality of true love's existence
now wise enough to see it all makes sense
it's not in fairy tales, books, or stories
true love's in our hearts, minds,
our fretfull worries
a mother's love, a soft sweet kiss
God's greatest gift
In that child's eyes I saw the sunrise
I saw the sunset
I saw the reason we first met
a fumbling first kiss
a naive true love wish
too young to love
too soon to know
that love could create
my reason, my fate
a beating heart
a living breath
rosy cheeks

INTERVIEW THE AUTHOR :DAVID DENNIS
Name: David Dennis 8/2/2013
Location: Rhode Island (USA) Question: Did you publish with a traditional publishing house or did you go the indie route?
I went the indie route.
Question: who or what inspired you to start writing?
When I was in third grade, I had a friend who would tell me stories as we walked to school. He never actually wrote them down, but seemed to be coming up with the storyline and various ideas on the spur of the moment. I remember thinking how exciting it would be if I could do the same and actually get everything on paper, using my old Underwood typewriter.
Question: how long have you been writing?I’ve been writing, off and on, since the time I was in third or fourth grade, usually little stories at first, until I “graduated” to writing an immense family saga when I was in my late teens.
Question: what other books or works have you published?
In addition to “Why She Left Us” (a work of literary fiction), I currently have a series of nine comedy-mysteries, all featuring a tough, wise-cracking private detective by the name of Brett Cornell.
Question: do you read the reviews of your work and how do they affect your writing?
Yes, I do read the reviews, but I can honestly say that they don’t really affect my writing one way or another. I realize that one’s taste in literature can vary from person to person; for example, most people who’ve read one of my comedy-mysteries have responded quite favorably, seeing the over-the-top humor for what it is, while a few readers have considered them silly and/or a waste of time.
Question: what do you find most rewarding about being an author?
I’m particularly excited when I read a review in which the reader confesses to having been moved to tears (particularly in reading “Why She Left Us”), or when the reader admits that he or she actually laughed out loud while reading one of my comedy-mysteries. One reader even said she’d like to wring Brett Cornell’s neck; I took that as a compliment, since I figured his outrageous antics must have certainly stirred up some emotions within her, even if they may have been emotions of anger or frustration.
Question: what works best for you when writing? Meaning do you outline or write freely when you feel inspired to do so?
I usually begin with a basic plot outline, then follow by listing the various main characters, writing down their relationships to one another, as well as some individual quirks or other “identifying” personality traits I’d want them to possess.

Question: for other authors who may be struggling what advice can you on handling rejection?
I believe that if you have faith in yourself and in your ability to either educate or entertain your readers on some level, you shouldn't react to harsh criticism or rejection to the point where you begin to feel that it’s motivated by scorn or hatred. As someone once said (I believe): You can’t please all of the people all of the time; you can only please some of the people some of the time.

INTERVIEW THE AUTHOR : ASHLEY HOWLAND
Ashley Howland 7/31/2013
Question:what are you working on at the moment?I have lots of writing projects at the moment. I find it hard to just do one thing. I am editing a sequel to my second book (Obi the Super Puppy and the Mystery of the Red Mist) this is a lot of fun because it has my kids and dogs in it. I am also editing another story for older readers. My kids have filled up any spare time with their requests so I am working on a few first drafts for them too. Lots of things to write about, never enough time!Question: Did you publish with a traditional publishing house or did you go the indie route?I chose a bit of both. My books were accepted by The Strategic Book Group. They handle a lot of the nitty gritty of publishing, which makes life easier. Then you are basically and indie author in terms of marketing, however they do offer support and education in that area. It’s worked for me. I will probably go back to them for my children’s books. I am looking at self publishing a few because the process is quicker and I am also looking at organizing some anthology fundraisers. These would be self published to raise maximum funds. I like the idea of both actually. It’s all about getting your books done to look fantastic!Question: who or what inspired you to start writing?I guess in some way my Mum was part of the initial process. She was an English teacher and tried to get published many times. Unfortunately she was never successful. I also had a volleyball coach who writes fantasy novels, he was one of the first authors I actually knew. It was nice to actually know someone who was published, suddenly it was like wow it actually can be done! More recently it’s my daughters who have inspired me to continue writing. They are such a big part of the whole process. I read all my books to them as part of my editing. Together with my dogs they also provide me with endless material.
Question: how long have you been writing?Question: what other books or works have you published?I have three published children’s books:Ghostnapped – Alex is on a camping trip with her family when her annoying younger brother is Ghostnapped. She discovers a mysterious past of the area and a really amazing monster on her quest to get him back.Obi the Super Puppy and the Mystery of the Red Mist – this is the first adventure of Obi. He discovers a red mist that is determined to rid the world of all Labradors. Obi has to become a real super hero to solve the mystery. The Homework Goblin – Jason completes his homework for the first time, only to have it stolen by the Homework Goblin. He goes on an amazing adventure to get it back.
Question: do you read the reviews of your work and how do they affect your writing?I think it is important to read what other people think about your work. You don’t have to agree, but it is a good way to continue to improve as a writer. Most of the reviews on my books have been really positive, which is great. My kids are also harsh reviewers, so that helps. I actually have my stories assessed before I edit them. This helps me to make sure they are complete and also to continue my development as an author.
Question: what works best for you when writing? Meaning do you outline or write freely when you feel inspired to do so?I like to start by playing with ideas. Jotting notes, chatting with my girls, even writing short stories with them. Then I put aside the notes and just write. Generally when I get about half way through I sit down and plot the rest of the story. Then I read the whole thing to my girls as the first edit. Stories tend to develop in my head before they really get on the computer.
Question: what do you hope to accomplish with the book you are currently working on?World domination... okay seriously I just like to hear from kids who have enjoyed my books. There is nothing better than hearing kids have stayed up late to finish reading one of my books. With each book I hope to improve my writing and reach more people.
Question: for other authors who may be struggling what advice can you on handling rejection?Rejection is part of life, learn from it. I suggest always getting your stories assessed and edited by an external source before submission. That way you will be presenting your best work. Of course you can still be rejected, but don’t give up. It you truly want something then you just need to keep working at it. Believe me when you are finally holding the first book with your name on the cover it will all be worth the effort

What's the most insensitive thing you witnessed today? Ok, now here's mine...
Today while at the grocery store I experienced THE most insensitive conversation. Which I felt was handled with grace by the tall blonde woman, struggling to pry a crushed loaf of bread out of her toddler's death grip. Had I been the recipient of the comment I would not have been able to restrain myself from being disgustingly nasty in response to the question.
Ah ha! Now I've got you all wondering, ok here goes...
So the mom is playing Tug -O-War with a smiley faced chubby cheeked toddler, as I said we're talking about a good old fashion game of Tug-O-War, but with bread. The only one having fun was the little one cheesin' like she knows she is about to be featured on someone's face book wall!
Anyway, that's when it happened. Two more women passed by talking excitedly to one another. They see the toddler (who was black y the way) and stop to exclaim...
"Oh my gosh! She is such a beauty!"
The toddler's mom was poised to say "Thank You" Until one of the women sticks her big tactless foot in her mouth.
"She sure is...Is she yours?!" She asks.
Ok so maybe she wasn't trying to be insulting, but is in not the height of rudeness to let curiosity rule absolutely everything that comes out of your mouth? I mean it's worse than asking a large woman when she's due. Worse even than asking a very clearly pregnant woman with kids, in the grocery line if she "knows what causes that?" While pointedly looking at her tummy.
If I were the little girls mother I would have said "Oh I don't know, I've only been feeding, cleaning, providing for, changing diapers, dressing, and loving her since the day I became her mother, but who knows? Maybe not, maybe she's yours!"
To her credit the blonde lady told them she was hers and that she was adopted. Her smile had evaporated though, and the awkwardness was palpable.
I know I was lookin' all kinds of crazy! When I'm disgusted my whole face screws up accordingly, I can't help it. They had to have known my thoughts because even though I had a truck load of children with me I was too busy staring at them in disbelief to pay attention to my girls who were singing, louder by the second "We're gonna, scream- and shout- and let- it- all- out!"
I stared them down accusingly until they left.
Here's my problem with the entire encounter....
It probably took weeks, months, possibly even years. It probably took jumping through legal hoops. More than likely if she adopted at birth, after waiting with bated breath to see if the child's biological mother may or may not change her mind about the whole thing, or she even possibly experienced that exact scenario, but with the devastating results of the biological mother actually having a change of heart after giving birth. After going through any one or possibly even all of those scenarios this woman is having to stand here and answer to some stranger whether or not her daughter was in fact hers!
I find the insensitivity appalling.
All you ever need say is "What a sweetie! He or she is gorgeous!" Or any version of that statement. If you're still not sure what might come out just smile and bid them good day.
If you are still wondering, if that question is still burning on your tongue. Here's the answer, no need to bother them, I've got it for you...
Ready...? Ok here goes.
YES. There's your answer. Period.

How not to write a book review
I must admit when I read this review I was mystified. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a review supposed to be written after one reads the book?
I suppose I should feel flattered that my work was at least capable of eliciting strong emotions, but I still wonder what was the point? Just to let an audience know that it was too graphic in her opinion? All the reviews, the cover description, everything states plainly that this is a romance novel about a woman coming out of an abusive marriage. I'm curious, what are your thoughts?
She wrote...
" I couldn't even finish reading this book. It's not bad writing, just the subject matter. Very graphic and I'm not the faint of heart, but this bothered me to read. It wasn't enjoyable. I couldn't finish it. Sorry. I hate giving a bad review to someone whom I'm sure put her heart and soul into it, and I can't even give it a proper review because I didn't finish it. I apologize."
I posted this on my "SheWrites.com" Blog and the popular opinion among the other authors and writers is that writing a review like this is a bit of a waste, for the following reasons; The point of writing a clear and honest review is to provide feedback of the product. To tell other possible customer's why you would or would not recommend the product, or in this case the book. Your experience whether difficult or pleasant while using/reading it. Honest reviews are helpful to everyone, they open dialogue about the item on average how well or poorly received it is based on the customer's/reader's experience. I value reviews and view them as constructive criticism which I use to improve on my writing, challenge myself, and hold myself to a higher standard.
Of course I love positive reviews, who doesn't? I enjoy the communications I have had with reader's when they tell me their thoughts as they are in the midst of reading my novel. I am touched when people say they were brought to tears or laughter by my writing.
I also expect to have reviews where people say it wasn't for them. I get it everyone has different tastes, and I am just thankful that they spent time in the world I created, whether they liked the experience or not., and using those reviews I can identify my weakness if it is within my control and produce a better quality product in the future.
My plea to all those that take the time to write a review; along with honesty, be productive, be precise, say why you were dissatisfied so that someone may learn something, and most important if you must write a disclaimer which states "I can't even give it a proper review" then by all means please don't!

Thank you to all my readers, fellow authors, and reviewers. I truly appreciate you each and every one!

Question:what are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on two different projects. One is the third book in my spy/thriller/mystery series and the other is the fourth book in my middle grade children’s fantasy/adventure series. Question: Did you publish with a traditional publishing house or did you go the indie route? I went Indie. Over the years I’ve sent odd query letters to agents and publishers, but never got anywhere with it. Hubby suggested that I try simply publishing myself on Amazon and seeing what happened. I decided that it was worth trying. I figured that the worst that could happen is a few terrible reviews and then I would just stop! Question: who or what inspired you to start writing?I started the children’s series to give my son something to read! He read very well at a very young age and there didn’t seem to be very much available for boys at that time. The thriller series is something that I would enjoy reading if I weren’t writing it! Question: how long have you been writing? Writing has pretty much always been a part of who I am. In the beginning I just “wrote” in my head, but as the years went on, some stories made it to paper. Every once in a while I clean out an old drawer and find something I wrote twenty or so years ago that I had completely forgotten about. I started writing more seriously when the kids were small and I was an at-home mom. It gave me something to do during nap times that occupied my brain. I just started publishing my work very recently, however. Question: what other books or works have you published? There are three books in The Distania Chronicles (my children’s series) An Unexpected Adventure, An Unexpected Twist and An Unexpected Invitation. There is also an omnibus of all three books in one called An Unexpected Collection. (all written as D.X. Dunn) The first in the thriller series is called Just This Once and book two should be out in early August; (written as Diana X. Dunn) and I have one romance out called Island Escape about the stunningly beautiful and historically fascinating Isle of Man. (written as Diana Xarissa) There should be more romances coming as well, but nothing is definitely planned at the moment. Question: do you read the reviews of your work and how do they affect your writing? I read every review that I get and so far I have been fortunate that they have all been very positive. I know that as more people read my books that will probably change. I really love hearing what people think, though, and I know that not everyone will enjoy my books. My favorite reviews come from children who enjoy the fantasy world I’ve created. Question: what works best for you when writing? Meaning do you outline or write freely when you feel inspired to do so?I used to just write freely, but often found myself with a half-finished manuscript and no clear idea of where to go next. Now I start with a very brief chapter-by-chapter outline of the whole book and some brief character studies, and work from there. Often I end up with extra chapters or I cut out chapters that I had planned when started, but at least I have some idea of where I think I’m going. Sometimes, of course, the characters have their own ideas of where the story is going…I try not to fight with my characters too much! Links For D.X.
