Question:what are you working on at the moment?
I’m working on two different projects.  One is the third book in my spy/thriller/mystery series and the other is the fourth book in my middle grade children’s fantasy/adventure series.             Question: Did you publish with a traditional publishing house or did you go the indie route? I went Indie.  Over the years I’ve sent odd query letters to agents and publishers, but never got anywhere with it.  Hubby suggested that I try simply publishing myself on Amazon and seeing what happened.  I decided that it was worth trying.  I figured that the worst that could happen is a few terrible reviews and then I would just stop!   Question: who or what inspired you to start writing?I started the children’s series to give my son something to read!  He read very well at a very young age and there didn’t seem to be very much available for boys at that time.  The thriller series is something that I would enjoy reading if I weren’t writing it!     Question: how long have you been writing? Writing has pretty much always been a part of who I am.  In the beginning I just “wrote” in my head, but as the years went on, some stories made it to paper.  Every once in a while I clean out an old drawer and find something I wrote twenty or so years ago that I had completely forgotten about.  I started writing more seriously when the kids were small and I was an at-home mom.  It gave me something to do during nap times that occupied my brain.  I just started publishing my work very recently, however.    Question: what other books or works have you published? There are three books in The Distania Chronicles (my children’s series) An Unexpected Adventure, An Unexpected Twist and An Unexpected Invitation.  There is also an omnibus of all three books in one called An Unexpected Collection.  (all written as D.X. Dunn)  The first in the thriller series is called Just This Once and book two should be out in early August;  (written as Diana X. Dunn) and I have one romance out called Island Escape about the stunningly beautiful and historically fascinating Isle of Man.  (written as Diana Xarissa)  There should be more romances coming as well, but nothing is definitely planned at the moment. Question: do you read the reviews of your work and how do they affect your writing? I read every review that I get and so far I have been fortunate that they have all been very positive.  I know that as more people read my books that will probably change.  I really love hearing what people think, though, and I know that not everyone will enjoy my books.  My favorite reviews come from children who enjoy the fantasy world I’ve created.  Question: what works best for you when writing? Meaning do you outline or write freely when you feel inspired to do so?I used to just write freely, but often found myself with a half-finished manuscript and no clear idea of where to go next.  Now I start with a very brief chapter-by-chapter outline of the whole book and some brief character studies, and work from there.  Often I end up with extra chapters or I cut out chapters that I had planned when started, but at least I have some idea of where I think I’m going.  Sometimes, of course, the characters have their own ideas of where the story is going…I try not to fight with my characters too much! Links For D.X.
