Nice Day for a Cruise - 09/20/14

The weather in North Georgia turned downright nice, so it was time for a cruise.

I took my 182,000+ mile daily driven road warrior Firebird Formula in Pewter Metallic to the great city of Canton, GA. It's home to the Po Boys Car Club Cruise-In, located in the Riverstone mall off of Highway 5 North.

It's billed as one of the largest cuise-in's in the South, and does it deliver. At its height, it probably drew about 1000 car crazy owners and about twice as many spectators to the mall. Some nights, they had to park them in the aisles.

These days, 400-500 cars usually show up. It's a eclectic mix of 1950's showboats, hot rods, muscle cars, and other strange, automotive creations. One night, an old Greyhound bus showed up and took up about a row of spaces.

Everyone is very friendly, and the talk usually turns to cars we used to own, races that were run, cops that were eluded, and college football.

And the best part of all. After the night is over, I have a simple, 20 minute ride home on a pleasant Georgia night. No judging, no trophies, just a great cruise.

Happy Holidays

So very cold.

The picture is from a holiday light display at Hobgood Park, a local green spot here in Woodstock, GA. For the sum of $10, you were transported into a magical, LED-lit world of wonder. The displays ranged from small, animated pieces to large snowmen and reindeer pulling bright wagons. One of Santa's helpers on the grounds said a million lights were used, and I believed him. Lights were everywhere. Even on the snack bar! :)

But, oh boy, was it cold.

Happy Holidays, Zombie fans.

Cruising

With the snow now behind us and warm Spring temps ahead, it's time to think about cruise-ins again. First up is the Po Boys car cruise in the great city of Canton, GA - still one of the biggest cruises in the South.

Every third Saturday from March till October, hundreds of car guys and girls meet in a strip mall to park and show off their rides. When the weather cooperates, the parking lot fills to capacity with neat rides from every decade. Spectators who came to shop or maybe to get a bite to eat find themselves surrounded by classics, muscle cars, hot imports and other automobilia.

I've been coming for the past ten years, its never the same cruise twice. You have your "regulars", but first-timers with all types of cars fill the rows. The show draws cars from all over the South. In the past, I've seen plates from Tennessee, Kentucky, and even Florida.

No trophies, no judging. Just a lot of great cars and people getting together. And for car lovers just there to spectate, a little bit of everything. Camaros and Mustangs? We got them. Hard-working pickups? We got a few rows worth. Muscle cars? Exotics? Old fashioned cars from the Thirties? You'll find a few. We even had a Kaiser Manhatten.

If you ever find yourself in Canton, GA on the third Saturday of the month and need a car show fix, come on by. Just look for all the cars with their hoods up. :)

FYI: I haven't forgotten (or abandoned!) Sometimes We Ran 3. Delayed by a sick editor, it's back in my hands ready for correction. It will be a book eventually ...I promise. :)

Thanks for waiting, Zombie fans.
