THE GIVEN DAY BY DENNIS LEHANE

An excellent picture of life in Boston after WWI. The Boston Brahmins rule while the Irish, Italians and Blacks scrape and claw their way up the social ladder. The minorities are treated like expendable, easily replaceable chattel. Some of the Irish inch their way to the grand table through graft and corruption, others by trying to organize against all-powerful employers. The impoverished Italians prefer anarchy while the Blacks serve the whites and detest them.
The book is disturbing at times but so well-written the reader will get to the end and look for more.

LIVE BY NIGHT BY DENNIS LEHANE

After finishing The Given Day, I was compelled to start reading Live by Night which continues where the first story leaves off. Joe Coughlin, the youngest son of a Boston police captain, dropped out of high school and began his career as a criminal with two Italian brothers. The story follows Joe's bullet-ridden assent as he rises to the top of the underworld. He is almost beaten to death, shot, and shunned; but he just keeps moving upward. This story starts with the Boston crime bosses then moves on to the Tampa area where alcohol flows northward during prohibition. The story is captivating, educational and addictive. I'm anxiously awaiting the third book's release.

ALL SOULS

Anyone who has ever lived in Boston should read this heartbreaking story of the disintegration of an Irish family from South Boston (the greatest place on earth). From the police to the politicians and Whitey Bulger, everyone extracted their pound of flesh from these poor, proud people who would never snitch. To be a rat was the lowest form of sub-human life, and yet it turned out that the biggest rat of all was the king of Southie, Whitey Bulger.

THE GIRL IN RED PAJAMAS - 5 STAR REVIEW

Book Review
Reviewed by Tracy A. Fischer for Readers' Favorite

In The Girl in Red Pajamas, the third book in the Pajama Trilogy by author Chris Birdy, the reader is again pulled deeply into the lives of Bodie McGruder and his family, especially that of his enigmatic daughter, Isabella. Bodie's sister, Ann, has been accused of the murder of Delores Peabody, Bodie's old girlfriend. The whole family's lives have been flipped upside down, and Bodie feels a responsibility to figure out what really happened. He's sure his sister isn't guilty of murder. Throw in the antics of his highly unique and intelligent daughter, Isabella, and you have one very intriguing read.

I loved this book. Loved. It. I'm not sure what else to say, except that author Chris Birdy is definitely a writer to watch. Her ability to create interesting characters that the reader will continue to think about long after the book is finished is certainly a testament to her amazing writing skills. Once I started reading this book, I simply could not put it down until I got to the very last page. The Girl in Red Pajamas is exciting, suspenseful, and just an excellent mystery. It was awesome to find a mystery that I hadn't figured out a quarter of the way through. This book would appeal to any reader who loves mysteries, thrillers, suspense, or just a great read with great characters. I recommend The Girl in Red Pajamas, and I am so looking forward to seeing what author Chris Birdy has in store for her readers next!
