Find Your Calling in Your SHAPE

“May he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him.”

Hebrews 13:21 (NLT)

Once upon a time, there were some animals that wanted to start a school. They decided the courses would include running, climbing, swimming, and flying. Then they decided that all of the animals should take all of the courses.

That’s where the problem started. The duck was better than his teacher at swimming, but he only made passing grades in flying and was very poor in running. So they made him stay after school to practice running. This caused his webbed feet to be badly worn, and his grade dropped to average in swimming. But everybody felt less threatened and more comfortable with that—except the duck.

The rabbit started at the top of his class in running, but because of so much makeup work in swimming, he caught pneumonia and had to drop out of school. The squirrel showed outstanding ability in climbing, but he was extremely frustrated in flying class because the teacher insisted that he start from the ground up rather than the treetop down. He developed charley horses from overextension, so he only got a C in climbing and a D in running. The eagle was the problem student and was disciplined for being a nonconformist. For instance, in climbing class, he beat all the others to the top of the tree, but he insisted on using his own way to get there — by flying to the top. Finally, because he refused to participate in swimming class, he was expelled.

What’s the point of this story for you and me?

God has designed specific animals to excel in specific areas, and he doesn’t expect them to do all the other things. A duck is made to be a duck and not something else. People are the same way. When you expect every person to have the same abilities and gifts, you’ll get frustration, mediocrity, and failure.

You were made to be you—and no one else. God has given you unique abilities, and he wants you to use them for your unique purpose.

Your abilities match your calling. Some people think a calling is just for priests, nuns, or missionaries. But every person is called by God.

First, we’re called to salvation. Second, we’re called to service. You know what your calling is by looking at your SHAPE—your Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences.

You have a calling on your life. You have a life mission, life message, life goal, and life purpose.

How will you use your unique SHAPE to fulfill your calling?

¿Por qué no Puedo Dejar de Hacer lo Malo?

“Si afirmamos que no tenemos pecado, nos engañamos a nosotros mismos y no tenemos la verdad”.    1 Juan 1:8 (NVI)

El pecado siempre implica el autoengaño. En el momento en que estás pecando, te estás engañando a ti mismo, porque crees que lo que estás haciendo producirá realmente mejores resultados de lo que Dios ya te ha dicho que hagas.

Para dejar de arruinarte a ti mismo, debes dejar de engañarte a ti mismo. Tienes que dar una mirada honesta a tu vida, enfrentar la verdad, y tratar los problemas. ¿Qué es lo que estás fingiendo que no es un problema en tu vida? ¿qué estás fingiendo que no eres adicto? ¿A qué le estás diciendo en tu vida que “no es gran cosa”?

Realmente no importa si se trata de consumir drogas o malgastar con tu tarjeta de crédito, si estás leyendo pornografía o una novela que no vale la pena. Estás usando todo para tratar de escapar de tu dolor y de tu pecado. Pero no vas a tener sanidad de todo eso, hasta que primero reconozcas la raíz de tu problema.

No tienes que llegar a tocar el fondo antes de que realmente cambies. Hay llamadas de alerta en todo momento a tu alrededor y no las escuchas. En su lugar, te diriges hacia el camino de destrucción.

¡Pero no tienes que ir de esa manera! Puedes reconocer la raíz del problema y tratar con este.

He preguntado a consejeros profesionales de nuestra iglesia: “¿cuál es el mayor problema que encuentras?”. Dicen una y otra vez: “la gente espera mucho tiempo antes de pedir ayuda. Entonces es casi imposible resolverlo”. Habrá señales de advertencia en todo lugar para un matrimonio, y luego de repente el esposo o la esposa se rinde. El que queda atrás pregunta: “¿Qué puedo hacer ahora?” No mucho. Deberías haber estado trabajando en eso antes. La mayoría de las personas están en negación, esperan hasta que ya es demasiado tarde y pasan por un dolor innecesario.

La Biblia dice: “Si afirmamos que no tenemos pecado, nos engañamos a nosotros mismos y no tenemos la verdad” 1 Juan 1:8 (NVI).

¿Cuáles son las preguntas difíciles que debes hacer sobre el pecado en tu vida? ¿Cuáles son las señales de advertencia que has estado ignorando?

Si quieres ser sano, tienes que reconocer la raíz de tu problema. Tienes que enfrentar la verdad sobre ti.

Why Do We Need Each Other?

“Each of you as a good manager must use the gift that God has given you to serve others.”

1 Peter 4:10 (GW)

Your abilities are for the benefit of other people. The Bible says in 1 Peter 4:10, “Each of you as a good manager must use the gift that God has given you to serve others” (GW).

You need me, and I need you. Nobody is good at everything. Nobody has every talent. There are no perfect people who can say to the world, “I don’t need anybody else.”

We need each other. We were made to work in teams! That’s why you need a small group and a church family. We’re better together.

Here’s the key to success: Build on your strengths so that your weaknesses become irrelevant. Every successful person does this. Just work on what you’re good at, and make it better.

Here’s a second rule of success: Team up with people who are good at what you’re not good at. Team up with people who complement you. Everybody has something to contribute. Nobody has it all together. We need each other!

This, by the way, is one of the purposes of marriage. In marriage we’re put together to complement each other’s strengths and to compensate for each other’s weaknesses. What happens when we don’t compensate for each other’s weaknesses? We criticize each other. That’s not what marriage is for. Marriage puts two sinners together, so there can be no perfect relationships. But in a marriage, you know the other’s weaknesses, so you can help compensate for them.

For example, take bill paying and budgeting. Who should do it? The one who does it better! The Bible doesn’t tell us who should do one role over another. Just figure out who does it better, and in doing that, you compensate for each other’s weaknesses. That’s why my wife, Kay, always drives instead of me. She’s a much more careful driver than I am.

This also applies to your work. If you want your business to be effective, here’s the key: Staff by SHAPE. Help people discover their SHAPE—their Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences—and put them in the positions they’re good at. When you do that, you won’t have to micromanage them or motivate them. Why? Because they’ll be doing what they love to do, and they’ll be good at it.

God wants every person to use their abilities to help other people. We need each other!

¿Por qué haces lo que no quieres Hacer?

“Conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres”.  Juan 8:32 (NVI)

Alguna vez te has preguntado ¿por qué haces lo que no quieres hacer? o ¿por qué es tan difícil hacer lo que sabes que es correcto?

Nuestra naturaleza pecaminosa es la causante de que muchas veces hagamos una mala decisión. Tal vez te identificas con el Apóstol Pablo cuando dice, “Realmente no me entiendo a mí mismo, porque quiero hacer lo que es correcto pero no lo hago. En cambio, hago lo que odio…. Entonces no soy yo el que hace lo que está mal, sino el pecado que vive en mí. Yo sé que en mí, es decir, en mi naturaleza pecaminosa no existe nada bueno. Quiero hacer lo que es correcto, pero no puedo” Romanos 7:15,17-18 (NTV).

Aún después de convertirte en un creyente, existe esta tensión dentro de ti. Tienes la buena naturaleza que Dios te dio, pero también tienes la antigua naturaleza pecaminosa que te asecha.

¡Pero existe una salida! Jesús prometió en Juan 8:32, “Conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres” Juan 8:32 (NVI).

El secreto para cambiar, no es la fuerza de voluntad. No es una pastilla. No es una resolución. No es hacer un voto. El secreto para cambiar no es algo que haces o dices.

El secreto para tener un cambio personal es algo que tú conoces. Conoces la verdad. Cuando cambias tu manera de pensar, cambia tu manera de sentir. Y cuando cambias tu manera de sentir, cambia tu forma de actuar.

Detrás de cualquier acto de derrota hay una mentira que tú crees. Quizá sea una mentira sobre ti mismo, o sobre tu pasado, tu futuro, Dios, o los demás.

¿Por qué haces algo que sabes que está mal para ti? Porque crees que hay alguna especie de recompensa. ¡Eso es una mentira! Solamente puedes cambiar y cumplir el propósito de Dios para tu vida si comienzas con la verdad de Dios. Si quieres cambiar la forma en que vives, tienes que empezar en tu mente. Tienes que conocer y creer la verdad de Dios.

Cuando conoces la verdad, la verdad te hace libre. Lo que tienes que hacer es exponer y destapar las mentiras que has estado aceptando. Algunas las adquiriste en el parque de juegos cuando eras un niño o de la televisión. Algunas las adquiriste de tus padres o creativamente te las inventaste. Pero son mentiras, y cuando rechazas las mentiras en tu cabeza y a cambio descubres lo que Dios tiene para decirte, experimentarás la libertad como nunca antes la habías sentido.

How to Make the Most of Your Abilities

“When the master comes and finds the servant doing his work, the servant will be blessed.”

Luke 12:43 (NCV)

All of us have unused abilities. Maybe you are still figuring out what your God-given abilities are. Or maybe you have abilities you’ve abandoned or ignored because of life circumstances.

But God gave you those abilities for a reason: He wants you to use them to serve him and others! There are three ways you can start engaging your abilities so that they are being used for good and for God’s glory.

1. Estimate your abilities.
Do an assessment of your abilities. What are you good at? Make a list. If there’s one thing I could say to young people today to prepare for their future, this is it: Know your strengths and weaknesses. Consider the capabilities God has given you. If you have trouble identifying your abilities, ask someone close to you for help!

2. Dedicate your abilities.
“Offer yourselves as a living sacrifice to God, dedicated to his service and pleasing to him” (Romans 12:1 GNT). Tell God, “You gave me these abilities. Now I’m going to give them back to you. I want to use them for the purpose for which you gave them to me.”

3. Cultivate your abilities.
That means practice, improve, sharpen, and develop. Any ability God has given you can be improved with use. Ecclesiastes 10:10 says, “If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success” (NIV).

How do you get skill? You practice. You sharpen your ax and work smarter, not harder. Sharpening your abilities—your aptitudes, your skills—is a spiritual responsibility.

God has invested enormously in you. First, he created you. Second, he shaped you with spiritual gifts and a unique personality. Then, he sent Jesus to die for you.

God has made an incredible investment in your life! And he expects a return on the investment. He’s going to ask you one day, “What did you do with what you were given? How did you use your abilities to honor me, to serve others, to make a living, and to be an example?”

Jesus says, “When the master comes and finds the servant doing his work, the servant will be blessed” (Luke 12:43 NCV).

God wants to bless your life! When God looks at you, he wants to see you using your abilities in the ways he intended so that you will experience his blessing.

Cuatro Maneras en las que Dios te Habla

“Dios habla una y otra vez, aunque la gente no lo reconozca”.  Job 33:14 (NTV)

Muchos de nosotros pensamos que estamos demasiado ocupados para escuchar las respuestas de Dios. Pero debemos tomarnos el tiempo para sintonizar y escuchar, porque Dios está hablando. Job 33:14 dice “Dios habla una y otra vez, aunque la gente no lo reconozca” (NTV).

La pregunta es, “¿Cómo hago para entenderlo? ¿Cómo hago para sintonizar y así poder escuchar la voz de Dios?”

Dios nos habla a través de la Biblia
Es tu libro guía para la vida. Te muestra cual es el paso correcto. Es por eso que necesitas leer la Palabra de Dios todos días. Si no tienes un tiempo a solas con Dios y no lees la Biblia diariamente, Dios va a recibir una señal de ocupado cuando quiera hablarte. Debes mantener una comunicación constante, porque la voluntad de Dios se encuentra en la Palabra de Dios.Dios nos habla a través de maestros.
¿Has estado alguna vez en un servicio de la iglesia y sentido que lo que el pastor estaba diciendo era un mensaje directo de Dios para ti? No hay ninguna forma de que yo o algún otro maestro pudiera descubrir exactamente qué decir para cubrir cada necesidad. Pero Dios sabe. Así que antes de cada servicio yo oro “Dios, tú conoces a las personas y cuáles son sus necesidades allá afuera. Dime las cosas que debo decir”. De alguna manera que solo Dios puede hacerlo, Él utiliza mis enseñanzas y las enseñanzas de otros pastores para cubrir las necesidades de las personas que están escuchando. Dios nos habla a través de impresiones.
Existen dos extremos para esto. Un extremo es el racionalismo que cree que ninguna impresión puede venir de Dios, todo tiene que ser lógico. En el otro extremo está la creencia mística de que cada impresión viene de Dios. Tú necesitas estar en la mitad y ser consciente de que cada impresión tiene que coincidir con la Palabra de Dios.Dios nos habla a través de nuestras circunstancias.
Si vamos a vivir una vida con significado, Dios debe corregirnos constantemente, y una de las cosas que Él usa para hacer esto son las circunstancias que llegan a nuestra vida. Cuando empiezas a escuchar a Dios a través de las circunstancias, de las impresiones, de los maestros o de la Biblia, algunas veces Él va a guiar tu camino en formas que tú no entiendes. ¡Resiste! Seguir a Dios no siempre es fácil, pero cosecharás más bendiciones en tu vida que las que te puedas imaginar.

How to Serve God Out of Delight

“Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves.”

Romans 12:3 (NLT)

Listen to your heart.

That sounds like pop culture fodder, but the Bible says that’s what God wants you to do. He wants you to look at what you’re made to do in order to know what he wants you to do. But most people these days are moving so fast that they don’t have time to listen to their heart anymore.

People all over the world are speeding along with no direction. They’re in such a hurry, stressed with too much to do—and they won’t realize until it’s too late that they didn’t have to do so much.

This isn’t the plan God has for you. He wants you to slow down and listen to your heart. Romans 12:3 says, “Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves” (NLT).

I suggest you get alone with God and ask yourself these questions:

What do I love to do?What do I dream of doing?What fascinates me?What can I talk about, think about, and study all day without getting bored?Where have I been most effective in my life?

I once baptized an 80-year-old woman after a service at Saddleback Church. She wanted to be a small group host. That’s pretty cool—an 80-year-old small group host! She said, “I just wish I learned years ago that we serve God out of our design, not out of duty.”

I wish everybody could learn that truth. That’s what SHAPE—your Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, and Experiences—is all about. You serve God out of your design and the way he shaped you. You serve God not out of duty, force, or guilt but because you love him. Because when you do what he wired you to do, it brings glory to him.

Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you’ve been given—in other words, of what God put you on earth to do. Then serve God out of delight and gratitude. That’s the way to live.

Agradécele a Dios Cuando Responde Tus Oraciones

“He oído todo acerca de ti, Señor. Estoy maravillado por tus hechos asombrosos”.   Habacuc 3:2a (NTV)

Si quieres oír hablar a Dios, entonces adóralo.

En otras palabras, agradécele por ser parte de tu vida y por estar interesado en los detalles de tu vida. Agradécele por contestar tus oraciones: “He oído todo acerca de ti, Señor. Estoy maravillado por tus hechos asombrosos” Habacuc 3:2a (NTV). Dios te da una visión. Dios te da un sueño. Tú sabes lo que Dios quiere que hagas, así que le das gracias por contestar tu oración. Esa es parte de la adoración.

Lo que quiero que hagas es que dejes de ver tus oraciones como un monólogo y comiences a verlas como lo que realmente son: un diálogo. La oración es una conversación con Dios. Dios escucha cuando oras, y contesta cuando haces preguntas. Él quiere hablar contigo cada día. Si tú hablas con Dios fielmente cada día a través de tu día, Él revolucionará tu día.

Ahora, no puedes escuchar a Dios hasta que lo conozcas, y hay tres niveles para el conocimiento de Dios: reconocimiento, conocimiento y amistad. Tal vez estás en el nivel de reconocimiento: sabes que Dios está allí, pero realmente no lo conoces. O tal vez estés en el nivel de conocimiento: conoces a Dios, pero no muy bien.

Dios quiere que vivas al nivel de amistad. Él quiere ser tu amigo, y quiere que tú seas su amigo. Dios quiere hablar contigo todo el tiempo.

Oremos esto hoy: “Amado Dios, estoy sorprendido que quieras ser mi amigo. Realmente quiero aprender a tener una conversación contigo. Ayúdame a pasar tiempo contigo cada día. Gracias por interesarte en cada detalle de mi vida. Jesús, quiero conocerte más y más cada día y quiero depender de ti para que me guíes en mi trabajo, mi familia, mi futuro y en cada área de mi vida. Te invito a ser el administrador de mi vida, mi Señor y mi Salvador, quiero seguirte y confiar en ti. Oro en tu nombre Jesús. Amén”.

Brokenhearted? The Lord Is Close

“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

We’ve all had our hearts broken in some way, maybe by disappointment, fear, shame, rejection, or ridicule. I say to you, as your friend, I’m sorry. I really am. I care about the hurt you have gone through, and God cares about it too. He hurts with you.

What was God doing when you were weeping? He was weeping too. In fact, it is in your pain that God is closest to you, whether or not you realize it.

The Bible says in Psalm 34:18, “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (NIV). How does he do that? He saves you by giving you a heart transplant. It’s his specialty, in fact.

It’s as if God says, “For the heart that’s guilty, I’ll give you a heart that’s forgiven. For the heart that’s resentful, I’ll give you a heart that’s full of peace. For the heart that’s anxious, I’ll give you a heart that’s confident. For the heart that’s lonely, I’ll give you a heart full of love. The heart that has been bitter and angry? I’ll give you a heart that is forgiving, loving, and generous instead. Let me do a heart transplant in you. I will set you free.”

Why do you need freedom? Because, without Christ, you’re enslaved. You’re a slave to the expectations of other people. You’re a slave to past memories. You’re a slave to future fears. You’re a slave to current pressure. You’re a slave to the opinions of society, and on and on and on.

But all you have to do is open your heart to Jesus Christ and give him all of it. Like David in Psalm 119:32, you can say to God, “I run in the path of your commands, for you have broadened my understanding” (NIV).

Your heart may have been broken, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Decide today to stop limiting God! He wants to do so much with your life—more than you can even imagine. Open your heart to God, and let him transplant your heart for his own.

Dos Pasos para Conocer la Voluntad de Dios

“Si alguno de ustedes requiere de sabiduría, pídasela a Dios, y él se la dará, pues Dios se la da a todos en abundancia y sin hacer ningún reproche”.  Santiago 1:5 (RVC)

Si quieres conocer la voluntad de Dios, necesitas hacer dos cosas:

Admite que necesitas dirección.

No nos gusta admitir cuando estamos confundidos. ¡Especialmente a los hombres no les gusta admitir esto! No está en mi naturaleza decir, “¡Oigan, estoy perdido!” y detenerse para pedir indicaciones. Ese es el por qué, cuando se trata de conocer la voluntad de Dios, es necesario admitir que estamos confundidos y necesitamos dirección.

Salmos 25:9 dice, “Él dirige en la justicia a los humildes, y les enseña su camino” (NVI). Si eres arrogante y piensas que has pensado en todo, Dios te dirá, “¡Adelante, inténtalo!” He encontrado personas que me dicen, “he sido cristiano por 20 años y nunca he sentido el consejo de Dios”. Mi respuesta es: tal vez es porque nunca has admitido que necesitas Su consejo. Asumes que sabes lo que tienes que hacer sin orar al respecto. Tomas decisiones financieras todo el tiempo sin orar al respecto. Haces planes de vacaciones sin orar al respecto. Tomas decisiones de una profesión sin orar al respecto. Si eres soltero, planeas citas románticas con otras personas sin orar al respecto.

Tú crees que lo sabes todo, pero deberías detenerte y admitir que necesitas consejo, porque es el primer paso en conocer la voluntad de Dios para tu vida.

Pídele consejo a Dios en fe.

La Biblia dice en Santiago 1:5-6 “Si a alguno de ustedes le falta sabiduría, pídasela a Dios, y él se la dará. Dios es generoso y nos da todo con agrado. Pero debe pedirle a Dios con fe, sin dudar nada. El que duda es como una ola del mar que el viento se lleva de un lado a otro” (RVC).

Observa que hay dos claves para obtener la sabiduría de Dios. Primero, tienes que pedirle a la persona correcta: Dios. No tienes que preguntarle a la manicurista, al cajero o a alguien con autoridad “confiable” como un anfitrión de un programa de radio. ¡Tienes que preguntarle a la persona correcta! Entonces debes preguntar con la actitud correcta: Esperando la respuesta de Dios. ¿Le has pedido a Dios que te guíe, pero no esperas que lo haga? Seguramente lo has hecho. Esa es la razón por la que nunca has obtenido su guía. Debes pedir una respuesta y esperar por ella. Dios honra la fe y Él promete sabiduría para los siguientes pasos en tu vida.
