“Well, here’s a fun photo,” Tyler interrupts with a smirk on his face, holding a stack of photos out for all of us to see. “Jennifer, you were a lovely drunken bride. Which one of you was the lucky groom?”
Jennifer’s face goes white.
“What?!” Jennifer screeches as she grabs the photos out of Tyler’s hand. Looking at the first one, she says, “Oh! Look at me with Elvis! Ohmigawd that photo is priceless! But I was probably just dressing up like the pirate thing. No way we got married.”
Knox holds out a manila envelope. As he dumps the contents of it, I notice little beads of sweat have formed on his forehead. Knox rarely sweats.
Two shiny silver wedding bands clang onto the table.
“Oh fuck!” Jennifer groans. “Knox? What the fuck? Did we get married? I was joking when I said let’s get married in Vegas. Oh my god.” She flips to the next photo. “Look at me in this one. I’m in a veil. I have that silver ring on my finger and the other in my hand! I’m giving Elvis a thumbs-up! And, ohmigawd, look at this one. Knox, we’re at the altar, kissing!”

There’s nothing but me and Gemma. It feels like we’re the only people left in the world. And it scares me, because she’s all I have to hold onto. I can’t be sure she won’t let go.
There’s no official camping at the lighthouse, so Gemma takes the bus off-roading, much like we did yesterday, and we come to a stop in a small valley in the middle of a field of cows. They all swivel their heads to stare at us with dark, inquisitive eyes. There’s a small house up on the hill but we can barely see it. Horses graze on the hill’s terraced grooves.
Beyond the hills, there’s nothing but ocean. I breathe in deep, feeling strangely nervous and shaky. I don’t think it’s just about being on the edge of nothing, though.
I think it’s that I’m on the edge of something.
We go to bed early, our alarms set for the early morning hour, pre-dawn. Even though the ocean looks to be about a ten-minute walk, I pack a bag with my camera, my phone, my sketchbook and the pastels.
I can’t get enough of her. Our love-making is slow and lazy but necessary. Being inside her feels like being home, it feels like being in love, it feels like everything sweet and beautiful and nice in the world. Every time I come in her I hope I’m making a home for myself, a place where I belong.
The alarm on my phone goes off way too early. In my sleepy stupor I nearly turn it off but Gemma is patting my arm, then punching my arm, telling me to get up. The world around us vibrates with the sound of mooing cows and I wonder how the hell I slept through them.
Even though the days are hot, the mornings by the ocean are cold, and I can barely get on my jeans and hoodie in time. Armed with the pack and flashlights, we jump out of the van. The air snaps at us as if we’re wind-blown flags.
Hundreds of cattle spread out in all directions, bound by the green hills to the south and the lighthouse to the north. I look east, to where the hills part and the sky is a paler shade of dawn. It seems to be growing lighter by the second, and our chances of catching the sunrise are dwindling.
We take off toward the light, cautiously creeping under barbed wire fences and avoiding the epic cow pies dotting the land. The cows, for the most part, seem to be ignoring us, but their piles of shit are like hidden landmines in the dim light. A meandering, narrow stream cuts across us and we have to head up into the terraced hills where wary horses eye us. I get the feeling that we’ve chosen the most difficult route to see the sunrise, and from our vantage point I can’t even see the lighthouse anymore.
Just as the sky seems to grow frighteningly light, we reach the crest of the hill and I nearly collapse, out of breath from the quick, steep hike. A lone filly bolts at the sight of us.
Below us lies an empty beach, laid out like a sheet of velvet. Aside from the occasional hoof print and driftwood, it looks totally undisturbed, like it has been waiting for us all this time. The South Pacific is spread out at the horizon’s feet, a royal blue tinged with saffron edges. The sun is not up yet. We still have time.
We run down the hill and I nearly eat shit, several times, my shoes slipping on the dew-slicked grass, until sand sinks beneath my feet. I grab Gemma’s hand and we run over to the water’s edge just as the sun peeks its glowing crown over the wavering line.
I look at her and smile. We made it. We’re standing on the easternmost point in the easternmost habitable country. We might even be the first people on this whole fucking earth to see this fiery sunrise. Only thousands of miles of rolling water lies between us and the southwest coast of Chile.
And yesterday.

When the band begins to play, I can’t help but smile. I feel at home. This beach is my other home, now if only I could dance. As couples begin to shag on the dance floor, I can’t help but look at Brett’s reaction. He’s taking it all in and watching their footsteps. I begin to giggle. “What?” he asks. I stand and take him by the hand. “I have no clue how to do this.”
“It’s easy. Just remember, one-two-three rock back. I’ll help you, no worries.” I wink. After a few songs, he becomes a natural and, we are laughing, smiling, and dancing like we have been dance partners for years. When the song ends, they slow things down and Brett never lets go of my hands. Instead, he pulls me close to him as we sway back and forth and my lips meet his.
He takes me from the dance floor and leads me to the marshwalk. We walk hand in hand from Wicked Tuna to Sisters Marina while looking at all of the fishing boats and yachts. On our way back, we walk a little slower and stop to watch the tide flow into the marsh. Brett wraps his arms around me and I can’t help but look into the clear Carolina night sky and pray this is real.

Jade on the other hand, I really had a hard time understanding why she was so scared to commit to a guy, but as the book progressed. I fell in love with her character just as much.
This story is one that shows what happens when things cross the line between friends, but then again, don’t best friends make the best relationships? That is as long as the relationship is strong enough to withstand life? If you are looking for a story, that will make you smile, pull for Kyle, and pray that life doesn’t get in the way. He stopped right out front. “This is going to sound absolutely crazy, but I need you to agree anyway.”
“Okay.” I watched him with interest. Kyle wasn’t the type to call any of his ideas crazy. He was more likely to proclaim them as wonderful.
“If you’re ever going to seriously consider trying out the random sex thing, call me first.”
My mouth fell open. “Uh, you didn’t just say that.”
“I’m just saying I’d rather my best host not die or get badly hurt after she decides to hook up with a random guy.”
“Oh yeah? Worried about your radio station?”
“And a friend.”
“Haven’t you heard about the hazards of sleeping with a friend?” My heart was beating a mile a minute. Had Kyle offered to have sex with me? He must have had more to drink than I thought.
“They’re no worse than hooking up with a random psychopath. Or a drummer,” he mumbled.
“Wait. What?”
“Nothing.” He looked down.
“Nuh uh, I heard you. You think I was talking about having sex with Len?” Kyle made no secret of his distaste of the guy.
“He does flirt with you every chance he gets, even when he’s across the country.”
“And that means I want to sleep with him?” Admittedly I’d had a mega crush on Len Denton, drummer of Chance of a Lifetime, but if my friendship with him had taught me anything, it was that I definitely didn’t want to sleep with him. I’d have chosen Kyle for that role ten times over.
Kyle shrugged. “Just saying, I think I’d be a better choice.”
“So what am I supposed to be agreeing to then? I’ll call you if I get horny next time instead of hooking up with someone random?”
“It sounds so much worse when you say it that way.”
“Because it is that bad.” I still didn’t know if he was actually serious. The offer was so unlike Kyle I doubted it could be.
“Fine. I was just offering.” He shoved his hands in his pockets.
“You were offering your sexual services. Got it.” I smiled. Joke or not, I had to give him a hard time about it.
“That sounds even worse.”
I put a hand on my hip. “Shall we say goodnight before it gets any worse?”
“Forget I said anything.”
“I will. After I tell all my friends.” I grinned. Teasing Kyle came so naturally.

There is something about YA. It doesn’t matter your age, where you’re from, or anything else, these are the books that make you fall in love with reading. Tiffany King’s, Turtle Bay, is no exception.
At some point in our lives our parents have embarrassed us to no end. Rain feels this way about her parents because let’s just say they march to the beat of their own drum. She tries to take the focus off of them in her Kansas town, and gets into trouble. When her parents are left a house in Turtle Bay, they see it is a chance for her to start over. She’s not excited at all, but soon realizes this place isn’t so bad.
Once in Turtle Bay, she looks for a job, relaxes at the beach, and even makes a few friends. These friends lead to a turn of events in her summer, and will also bring someone into Rain’s life that understands her and her family completely.
Turtle Bay is a story of family, accepting it’s okay to be different, tragedy, natural disaster, love, and hope. If you are looking for a read that is jam packed with emotions this is the book for you!

There is something about YA. It doesn’t matter your age, where you’re from, or anything else, these are the books that make you fall in love with reading. Tiffany King’s, Turtle Bay, is no exception.
At some point in our lives our parents have embarrassed us to no end. Rain feels this way about her parents because let’s just say they march to the beat of their own drum. She tries to take the focus off of them in her Kansas town, and gets into trouble. When her parents are left a house in Turtle Bay, they see it is a chance for her to start over. She’s not excited at all, but soon realizes this place isn’t so bad.
Once in Turtle Bay, she looks for a job, relaxes at the beach, and even makes a few friends. These friends lead to a turn of events in her summer, and will also bring someone into Rain’s life that understands her and her family completely.
Turtle Bay is a story of family, accepting it’s okay to be different, tragedy, natural disaster, love, and hope. If you are looking for a read that is jam packed with emotions this is the book for you!
