The Chronicles of Koa: Netherworld 5 Star Review From Author, Morgan Jane!!
Welcome to a world where vampires must “register,” humans sell their services as pets, and angels patrol the Earth. This is Koa’s world. Koa Ryeo-won is a half-blood. She works alongside her best friend Halston in the Netherworld division. With her legendary, enchanted Lyrinian sword, Koa and the other agents keep order in the mortal world.
Someone is letting rogue supernatural creatures out of the Netherworld and Koa is determined to find out why. She is missing memories of her early teen years, when her vampire father brought her to the Netherworld. Koa will stop at nothing to retrieve those memories and break her mother’s curse.
Koa had it all, an attractive human pet, a sprawling manor, and a job working alongside the man she loves. A Netherworld serial killer, with a craving for little girls, threatens it all. Is Koa ready to return to the Netherworld to release the one creature that can protect all that she holds dear?
After reading the first couple chapters online I knew I had to read more about Koa! The author has created a engrossing world with vampires, angels and other mythical creatures. And not just any mythical creatures, her creations were... awesome! I could really see this being a movie with all the action and amazing imaginary.
More than anything, I appreciated the creativity of this book, traveling in the Netherworld was a fascinating journey. Also, the story surprised me. At one point Koa had killed everyone fairly easy with her magical sword and I thought that was the end of it but then what happened next had me on the edge of my seat. Koa also made some choices after separating with the handsome British accented Halston that astonished and pleased me, I felt like the story was getting better and better.
I like when an author isn't afraid to create and K.N. Lee really kept her story interesting. There are so many things I loved, Raven, Wren Castle, the Netherworld Division, Ian, the alchemist, the oracle, the shadows, the discs (cool), the possibilities with Jax... Plus the end, I really didn't see it coming, when Koa remembered what she was made to forget, what a twist! This book introduced a wonderful world, compelling characters and plenty of conflict for the story to continue. Now I can't wait for the next installment.
Now go Buy it!

Writing Challenge With Author, Asya Pekurovskaya!!
The Challenge:
In 2500 words or less, create a fairy tale!
The Result:Tess, The Daughter of the Dwarves' KingBy, Asya Pekurovskaya
There are days when everything crops up as stated by your wishes. The sun sends its gentle rays your way. The buds of cherry tree branches develop into flowers right before your eyes, and the critters tip off their knitted hats, greeting you with reverence.
Tim hurried up. Yet on his way he had to shake the paw of Ben, the crocodile, bow Humphrey the cat and catch up with the mouse Bertha, who dropped a velvet purse with blue lapis lazulites.
In his pocket he carried a map of the area. In his backpack there was his favorite, ball- shaped donut filled with cherry jam.
From time to time an idea popped up in his head that it would be marvelous to eat that donut right now. But apart from donut, he had nothing to eat. Yet he had a long way to go.
You probably want to know where he was going.
But, sad to say, he did not really know that himself. That is, he knew, of course, that he ought to find a colossal diamond, which was stored in the underground kingdom of the dwarves. But he had not the slightest idea of how to get there.
He thought of the map, to be sure. However... although he had already learned to read and could read long book titles such as: "Get your spoonful of boon/ "With the fibs from Medoon," he had never had a chance to read a map.
But things you have never done before, better not to start now, especially if they have an impact on your cherished journey.
And Tim started to look for a passer-by who had had to deal with the map before. “I should have asked the crocodile Ben. He lives on the lake and promenades in the cherry alley every day. If he did not know how to read a map, he would have already get lost.
Tim went after the crocodile, mentally, needless to say, and assured himself the crocodile had already made it home and, after putting on his bathing suit, taken a dip freestyle to the other shore.
But the time to think about Ben, the crocodile, run out very quickly. Right before Tim’s eyes a butterfly fluttered in a strange pirouette.
The butterfly moved its proboscis, then turned it into a tube and started spinning it like a ballerina.
Tim stared at the butterfly, forgetting everything, including his backpack in which a donut was waiting for him filled with cherry jam. And the butterfly seems to catch sight of him, as well.
And here is what happened next.
Apparently, very tired, the butterfly–ballerina perched on an open flower of the cherry tree and stretched her antennas which turned to be delicate arms, in Tim’s direction.
When the butterfly–ballerina’s arms reached out to Tim, they gently took his both hands and lifted off the ground.
And they flew, picking up speed.
“But I have absolutely no time for a flight. I am not promenading, I am escorting myself,” said Tim and looked displeased at his companion.
“Why did you decide that I was promenading?” the butterfly–ballerina replied.
“Yet our ways may not cross,” Tim said and immediately regretted it. After all, he wanted his ways to always cross with the ways of this beautiful butterfly–ballerina.
“Why do they not cross?” the butterfly corrected him. “You're Tim, are not you? And if you guess my name, I will help you find the underground kingdom of the dwarves, and even show you the way to the magic diamond that ...”
“But how do you know about the magic diamond? This is my very private secret,” interrupted Tim.
“Akh, you do not think itstraight and loose time,” the butterfly ballerina said in a melancholy voice.
But instead of stopping to loose time, that is, instead of guessing the name of his companion, Tim started to carelessly compose a poem about her.
And here is what he devised:
To create a butterfly Someone modeled on the sly A dynamic flying shirt Trendy pants, TP, for short, Borrowed petals, light and awesome From the most entrancing blossom.
And to demonstrate her gown, Baby circled twice her town: Paid a visit to her mates, Garbed both chic and up to date.
Munched her breakfast at the daisies, Lunched with indolent and lazy Clovers. Then she turned her keel To bluebells for an evening meal. To complete her trying cruise Got prepared for a snooze: Funneled her fatigued proboscis, Mutely closed her wings, don’t ask us Why...
But then something happened, causing Tim to immediately regret his careless distraction.
His companion had disappeared, and he flew down rapidly, like a stone.
He certainly got hurt, but not as much so as not to see that he landed downright on a flower bed, caught between two amazing, utterly exotic plants ...
“What a pity the butterfly–ballerina will not see this beauty!” flashed through his mind. And when he got up to look more closely at the flowers, they seem to have bowed their heads towards him and kept gazing at him in response.
Once again, Tim reminisced about the butterfly–ballerina. Only now did he realize that she looked at him the same way as these flowers, that is, not with her eyes, which he had not even noticed, but with her entire body.
Only the entire body of this mysterious plant did not embrace its wings and proboscis like the body of butterfly–ballerina. All it had were leaves that were looking up, like pointed spears, and petals of pink and lilac color resembling those of a lily.
As he glued his eyes to the remarkable plant, Tim noticed, in the very convergence of petals, yet another yellow flower, around which a fence of pistils grew which had all the hallmarks of a very dark lilac flower.
“I've never seen flowers with such colorful eyes. But what if these are not flowers at all, but enchanted dwarves?” Tim guessed. And as soon as he made this guess he noticed a brass plate, which denoted something in an unknown language.
“Who could conceive hanging a sign that can not be read?” Tim said out loud.
But as he expressed his astonishment, he detected a miniature table, on top of which someone dumped .... No, to grasp that was beyond Tim’s fancy. But it was exactly so. The plausible dwarf seem to have forgotten his ... reading glasses, on the table.
“May I...?” Tim asked the dwarf, and, without waiting for an answer, reached for the glasses.
The plausible owner of the magic glasses dropped no word in reply.
“I can see you don’t mind,” Tim said and rushed to put on the glasses. But as soon as he mounted them on his nose, everything transformed around him.
The sky acquired a pale lilac color, yet the flowers grew blue and white and started to emit some captivating smells. It even occurred to Tom that flattering among the flowers was a silhouette of his beautiful butterfly–ballerina.
And when he finally saw the brass plate, he couldn’t believe his eyes. The inscription read: “Passiflora, the flower of suffering.”
“The flower of suffering,” Tim repeated like an echo, and the glasses flew from his nose.“Flowers can not cause suffering. And if there is an enchanted dwarf hiding in a flower, one needs to make sure he was no longer there.”
But as soon as Tim pieced together the future fate of the enchanted and the plausible dwarf, a fence began to grow around them. And something was very strange.
The space inside the fence was arranged in such a way that the bed with the Passiflora flowers was stretching along the path and turning right, whereas next to the bed there appeared a new path that curved left and stretched all the way to the summit.
“If I do not follow the Passifora flowers I will avoid suffering, Tim thought.
“Then change your course to the left,” Tim heard the same voice.
He looked around. Not a soul was seen on all sides. “How will I climb this huge mountain? Besides, the kingdom of the dwarves is in the dungeon,” Tim replied.
“So, you have already made your choice,” the voice continued calmly.
“I made no choice. I am at a crossroads. Do not you see?
An alarming silence fell over them.
“Someone is trying me. It could be the glasses that returned from their exile. They must be magical,” Tim thought.
“Akh, you do not think it straight and loose time,” the voice warned him.
“Somewhere I have heard this warning,” Tim thought.
But it was too late. He fell down again, and when he landed, he immediately recognized the area.
It was impossible not to recognize it. After all, Tim saw himself walking down the road that led from his own home.
He was in a rush. Yet he had to shake the paw of Ben, the crocodile, bow Humphrey the cat and catch the mouse Bertha, who dropped a velvet purse with blue lapis lazulites.
And when he fumbled the area map in his pocket and assured himself that his favorite, ball–shaped donut filled with cherry jam was still in his backpack, a very unhappy thought flashed in his mind.
“I will never get to the underground kingdom of the dwarves and get a magic diamond. Instead of going forward, I came right back.
“But you still have one more chance,” Tim heard the familiar voice.
“How wonderful it is that magic glasses have not left me,” Tim thought.
“If you prepare a new challenge for me, I will listen, I will waste no time and I will not miss anything. I even will agree to take the path to the left, although climbing a vertical trail is very difficult, almost imposs ...
“We’ll check it now,” the glasses interrupted Tim, “Did you chat with the daughter of the Dwarves’ King?”
“I conversed with the butterfly–ballerina. Is she the daughter...?”
“You talked to her, not knowing her name, and did not even try to guess it,” the glasses hurried to continue, ignoring Tim’s question. “It was not polite and also quite annoying. After all, from your figuring out her name depended your joint destiny. Now the princess is imprisoned in the tower, and you have lost access to the diamond, which is locked in her casket.”
“This is terrible! She needs help! Promptly! But how could I reveal her name? Names are plentiful, and they are all different ... Her name is Tess!” Tim blurted.
If he was told a moment ago that he could effortlessly guess the name of the unknown princess, he would have never believed it.
“But who said I really had guessed her name?” flashed through Tim’s head.
“Well, you guessed it right. Now, there is very little you have to do. You will have to liberate the princess and find the key to her casket. Remember: the key is placed on the wrong side of one of the copper mirrors in the Kingdom of dwarves.

5 Star Review for The Chronicles of Koa: Netherworld by, J. Pfahl
By J. Pfahl Format:Kindle Edition
The Chronicles of Koa: Netherworld Review This debut novel from K.N. Lee is such a wonderful way for her to introduce her writing skills to the world!! Her writing has a way of getting people excited to read something and it is infectious. This is a fantasy novel full of Vampires and other mythical creatures that are so popular right now in books. Sometimes stories about Vampires can get repetitive and stale, however Ms Lee manages to find a way to create a fresh take on it. Her characters have depth, growth, and they are the kind of characters you can get attached to. Her vision and imagination really comes through on the page and I'm so excited for the second installment of the Chronicles of Koa as this one left me wanting more! I don't want to give any spoilers on the book but it centers around a young woman (who is an anomaly as a half human/half vampire) who is determined to reclaim her memory and her life. She is full of strength and determination and you want to cheer her on. If you like books such as The Hunger Games, or The Mortal Instruments series etc. then this is definitely a book you will enjoy. Thanks J. Pfahl!! -K.N. Lee

The Chronicles of Koa: Netherworld Chapter 1
The Chronicles of Koa: Netherworld
K.N. Lee
Chapter 1
“Mmm,” Koa said as she opened a bag of freshly popped popcorn. She breathed in the buttery aroma and groaned in delight. There came a low purr from behind and she glanced over her shoulder at the stoic black cat. The cat jumped onto the dining chair.“Smells good Raven. Doesn’t it?”Raven stared back with her ethereal green eyes. The cat blinked, as if she was bored.Koa shrugged and blew her bangs out of her eyes. “Fine.” She rolled her eyes. “I know you’re still mad at me for coming home late last night. I said I was sorry. But I’m a big girl now.”Raven blinked again.Koa scoffed. “Be that way. This popcorn is all mine and you’re just jealous.” She made a teasing face. She poured the popcorn into a large bowl and carried it out of the massive kitchen that had once been filled with kitchen staff and a private chef. Through the archway and into the grand hall, Koa shuddered at the chill in the air. The sound of her soft footsteps echoed through the empty manor and she found herself humming as she always did. She didn’t pay any mind to the gothic statues that glared down at her on either side of the wide corridor. There was a time when Koa had been frightened by her father’s relics. As a girl she would avoid walking down the hallways at night for fear that they would awaken and grab her with their cold, stone, hands. Now, Koa was used to the statues of angels and demons. She barely glanced at them anymore. Such things were a part of her daily life and she no longer feared their artistic replicas. It took her a few moments to cross the cold marble floors to the large den she had converted into an entertainment room. Koa used a remote to turn off all of the lights. She lit a scented candle just as Raven brushed past her leg. She rubbed her soft fur onto Koa’s bare flesh. The scent of vanilla made her smile. Koa flopped onto the plush sofa and put her feet up on the ottoman. She sank into the cushions and closed her eyes in bliss. “Halston has given me a few nights off.” She turned on her television. “Finally, I get to catch up on some reality TV!”Raven seemed to roll her eyes and Koa grinned. “I know,” she said as she relaxed her back on the orange pillows and popped a handful of popcorn into her mouth. “I can be such a girl sometimes.” She laughed to herself. She was happy. Life had been so busy lately with the rise of supernatural crime, that a single moment of solitude was a rare.Koa glanced at Raven and held her arms out. “Come sit with me. Pretty please?”Raven snuggled next to her and rested her head on Koa’s lap. Koa smiled and stroked her black fur. Sometimes it seemed as if Raven was all she had left in the world, besides Halston. “Maybe I’ll order you some Chinese. How does that sound? You always loved it. How about some roasted duck?” Koa had just started to crunch on a kernel when she heard the faintest creak in her hallway. It was so faint that she almost didn’t catch it. She didn’t want to catch it. She wanted the night to go smoothly, but it was the way Raven’s ears perked up that confirmed that Koa had indeed heard something. Koa grumbled and put her bowl of popcorn down on her glass coffee table. She held her breath. All of her senses were heightened. There was a definite warning deep in the pit of her stomach. She sniffed the air. There was the faint stench of coal and something rancid.Odd, she thought with a frown. She had smelled that distinct odor before. It was not from this world. Very odd.Raven looked down the dark hallway and made a low sound of warning deep in her throat. Her black fur stood on end. Koa shushed her with a hand. She came to her feet and headed towards the sound. She could feel that someone was there. Like the telling smell of oncoming rain, Koa had an uncanny sense of knowing when something bad was about to happen. She hoped that this time she was wrong. Her heart began to thump in her chest. Her one day off, and someone decided to bother her. Raven lowered her head and waited back on the sofa.Scaredy-cat, Koa thought with a frown.Koa softly tiptoed into the darkness. She now wished that she was properly dressed. She didn’t want someone catching her in her underwear. She sighed. She was probably overthinking things. Two-hundred-year-old French manors tended to creak in the night. Koa should have been used to the sounds after all these years of living there.Truth was, Koa was still afraid of the dark and with good reason. She froze when something crashed to the floor. She quickly pressed her back against the wall and waited. One of the statues had broken.Voices.Koa cursed in her head. Someone was definitely in her house. Her breath quickened. Koa could hear Halston’s voice in her head, telling her that it wasn’t worth it…that she should run. She didn’t run.Instead, she peeked around the corner of the wall and saw flashlights. The harsh, fluorescent light pointed in her direction. Two men. Bald and big. They were dressed in black with tattoos all over their pale white faces and scalps. They clutched silver barreled crossbows.Koa’s face paled. Their black eyes searched her hallway. No, Koa thought with cold realization. Her skin crawled with dread. It’s not possible. “Syths,” she whispered in a hiss. They heard her. Four black eyes looked up and met hers. Koa pulled back. Her pulse raced. These were creatures of folklore and mythology, but Koa knew the truth. Such creatures did exist. It was just that they shouldn’t be in the human world. She gulped. Something was definitely wrong. They should not be here.“Shit!” No time to run now. Boots stomped down the marble floors. Dread washed over her, making her skin feel prickly. Two Syths, equipped with crossbows. Koa knew what those arrows were laced with. Her stomach pumped with anxiety. Why were they in her house?Koa saw Raven come around the corner and leisurely sit in the middle of the hall. Koa’s anxiety began to be replaced with fury. No one had ever invaded her home.Koa glared over at Raven.“Fine. Just sit there and let me do all of the work,” she said to the black cat. Koa yelped as a large hand reached for her long black and blue hair. She grabbed the hand and with a push off the ground, she leapt into the air.Her feet climbed up the air as if by invisible stairs. With a surge of energy, she took flight. She grunted as she lifted the large man’s weight off the ground and flew upwards. He used his other arm to direct the point of his crossbow at her.Koa’s eyes widened and she pursed her lips. She saw the red poisonous arrow ready to be released. The second Syth waited below as Koa went higher and higher up the tall vaulted ceiling. It was cold up there, and pitch black, but Koa could still see the Syth’s illuminated face.An arrow zipped past her and she gasped. “Come quietly, Koa, and we won’t have to hurt you,” the Syth below shouted. “Our master doesn’t want you dead. He just wants us to bring you in.”She snorted. “No thanks. I like my world just fine.” Koa looked down at the Syth whose hand she held. It was rare that she saw one of his kind. His lips curled into a malicious grin. “Yes, come quietly, my pretty,” he whispered. His voice was like nails on gravel. “You know you don’t belong here with the humans…”Koa gazed into those soulless black eyes and felt her stomach churn with dread. They were like small, black, beads. The tattoos around his eyes were inscriptions of a dialect that didn’t exist in this world. Someone was letting rogue nephilim out of the Netherworld.“And neither do you,” she said and with an evil grin, she let go of his hand. He cried out and fell nearly fifty feet. Koa heard a satisfying crunch of bones. She smirked. Still, it wasn’t enough to kill a Syth. Those bones were probably regenerating already. Koa hadn’t encountered many since she’d become a Netherworld agent, but Netherworld beings were extremely hard to kill.Koa darted away from another arrow and into the darkness of her empty house. She stood on the ceiling, upside down, yet defying gravity as she looked down at the two shadows below. She considered all of her options. She could fly out of that window ahead or she could go back and kill them.Syths were dangerous. She couldn’t let them get away. But her weapons were in her vault. In order to reach her vault, she would need to go past the Syths. How silly of her to think that she was safe. Not even her home was sacred anymore. Nearly five years as an agent in Halston’s Netherworld Netherworld division, and Koa was still caught off guard. Koa frowned. Halston was right. She should have moved a long time ago. She could already see Halston’s self-satisfied smile. She hoped she’d make it out alive to see that smile again.Something caught her attention. A glittering light below. She saw Raven’s green eyes glow, and then she saw something else. Like a bolt of lightning, Koa shot through the darkness to Raven. Koa had a determined look on her face. She could make it. She had to.Arrows flew all around her. The arrows bounced off the walls and sparked along the floors. Her heart pumped, but her face was set with purpose. She smiled when she saw her Lyrinian sword lying on the floor, like a beacon of hope in the darkness.Raven stepped away from it. Koa grabbed it by its hilt. A jolt of power slammed into her palm and flooded her body. She gritted her teeth and embraced the euphoric pain the sword caused her. The blade shot out, lengthening from the size of a small dagger to that of a full sized sword. The jagged blade was a dark metal that was rippled with black engravings. Netherworld dialect. Koa grinned. Once the initial pain subsided, the power made her feel invincible. The Lyrinian sword had been her father’s. He had trained her to use it when she was only a little girl. This weapon, was not of this world…and would not be put away until all evil was vanquished.“Thanks, Raven.” The cat seemed to nod.Koa cried out as an arrow nipped her right cheek. The pain was surprising. It sizzled. Blood dripped from her face as her hand shot to cover the wound. Her green eyes went dark. She balled up her fist and tightened her grasp around the sword. She narrowed her eyes and turned around. They pulled the triggers on their bows and heard an empty snip.Koa gave them a cold grin and yet there was no amusement in her voice. “You’re mine, now.”They were out of arrows. Both Syths skidded to a stop. Almost frantically, they reached behind them and into their quivers to reload.Koa took a step forward and their eyes went wild…with fear of the small girl before them.Koa held her sword’s black blade at her side. It pulsed with craving for blood. The blood of the evil ones would increase its power. Koa charged at them. She was lifted to her toes and with a swirl of colors she slashed one of the Syths across his side. Her white teeth flashed as the blade burned an iridescent red at the first taste of blood. The blade craved blood and she would sate it. The Lyrinian sword didn’t stop at the bone. The blade didn’t even pause. It sliced through his spine with ease until the man was cut in half. It sped up only when it came through his other side and to the cold air of the manor. The Lyrinian sword’s red light encased the black blade and she could feel its heat.Koa didn’t stop there. She couldn’t stop even if she wanted to. Evil had to be vanquished. She clenched her jaw as the blade went cleanly though the other man, separating him at his waist. Their cries filled the entire manor as she sliced them to bits. Both Syths lay on the floor in pieces. Koa kicked their crossbows away, not that they had hands connected to their arms anymore. Her chest heaved as she stood over them. Smoke rose from the blade of her Lyrinian sword. Koa watched their pale white faces, waiting. Blood pooled onto her floor. She watched it gather around her bare feet.Raven sauntered over. She sat down and licked her front paw. Her green eyes looked up innocently into Koa’s matching green eyes. “Shall we leave now?” she asked, in her mother’s voice.Koa’s shoulders slumped. She looked over at the cat. “Yes.” She nodded and looked down at the blood pooling between her white toes. “But first, I must clean up this mess.”

The Chronicles of Koa Book Release!
It's a lovely day! The Chronicles of Koa: Netherworld just went live on Amazon. Guess who is thrilled, amazed, overjoyed, delirious with excitement...This girl! Me! Hooray! I hope everyone gets a chance to purchase this novel so that you can finally see what all of the hype was about.
This novel is very special to me. I started The Chronicles of Koa in November 2012, right before a horrible car accident that left me unable to write or do anything for the beginning of the new year. I was lucky to recover so quickly, and return to my work on this novel. I think the time I lost only made me work harder, dig deeper, and find out who my characters were. I've never been more focused.
I am overwhelmed with emotion...and pleased to present the results of my hard work to the world!
Brief Description:
Meet Koa Ryeo-won, Netherworld secret agent. Being a half-blood, half vampire and half human, hasn't been easy for Koa. She has had to live with her thirst for blood and the fact that she is being hunted for far too long. Koa uses her abilities to protect herself and the humans she loves from the escaped supernatural creatures of a different world.
Halston is blonde, British, and the leader of the Netherworld division. He may be her best friend, but he is also...Koa's boss. Together, they fight evil and keep order in this changing world. Koa thought she had everything under control...an attractive human pet, a good job killing naughty vampires, and a sprawling manor. That is, until her life, and that of her cursed mother's, is threatened by none other than a vampire king.
Is Koa ready to journey to the Netherworld and set free the only creature that can help her stop this king?

This novel is very special to me. I started The Chronicles of Koa in November 2012, right before a horrible car accident that left me unable to write or do anything for the beginning of the new year. I was lucky to recover so quickly, and return to my work on this novel. I think the time I lost only made me work harder, dig deeper, and find out who my characters were. I've never been more focused.

“Good-night, Mr. Bluesuit.”
“Goodnight, Alice.”
The door closed gently as I bid goodnight to my dear. Another day of fun and games come to an end. I miss her so when she leaves me alone. This is a lonely place; my little house. Although it is bright and cheerful and I have everything I could ever need, it is still… a lonely little place.
Alone in my home…
I’ve tried to leave. I really have but there is no way for me to leave. Not without her help. I’m paralyzed now although I can feel myself getting stronger every day. The more she loves me and the more she believes in me the more I believe in myself. I know that with her love I will keep getting stronger and when I do I know I will be able to leave. One day I hope to surprise her and join her on the outside, on my own.
It’s amazing that I can even think these thoughts considering who I am and where I came from.
I’ve been here as long as I can remember; I guess since the beginning, although I don’t know how long ago that was. I only started to know where I was or who I was just recently. It was as if one day I woke up from an eternal sleep and found myself here…in this neat little house...in this strange place.
My friend, Alice, is a strange little bird you know. She chats with me and tells me the funniest stories. At least I think they’re funny. She seems to find them so as she laughs and laughs at them. She laughs at a lot of things actually. She’s even confided in me that everyone she knows thinks she’s ‘daft’ as she puts it. Really! She said that her sister won’t talk to her anymore because she’s ‘coo-coo as a clock’!
She laughed at that too. I kind of feel sorry for her; all alone in this house. Well, except for me of course but I’m not much for conversation in the condition I’m in. But, I hope that as I get stronger I will be able to be a better companion.
I think I know what’s happening to me and I hope you don’t think it strange. Alice was reading a magazine to me the other day and there was a story about philosophy and it contemplated the idea that we only exist because others believe us to exist. We don’t exist in and of ourselves but because others see us, we are real. It was all very complicated, and made us both laugh, but as I thought about what she read it occurred to me that because Alice believed in me maybe her love was bringing me back! Strange, no? But, this is what I thought and then I thought, maybe that philosopher was onto something. Whatever was happening to me I believe it was because of Alice; dear, sweet Alice.
Every day she would talk to me and every day I could feel my muscles getting stronger; felt my eyes slowly focusing; felt my tongue tasting words. If this continued I would be dancing in no time! Haha! I will make her so happy one day. But, until then…
Days go by and I am frustrated by how long it’s taking. Alice takes care of me and talks to me and I know I’m real to her. It is only a matter of time…and I have all the time in the world.
Today is the day! I can feel it! Today I will surprise Alice with a ‘hello’ and a hug! I could feel my eyes moving and my voice returning as the night progressed and I’m going to surprise her! Oh, won’t she be thrilled? I can almost picture the look on her face, the joy she’ll feel, when it happens! And, when it does, we can finally, really, be together.
As the day progressed I could hear her moving about outside. I could hear her comings and goings. I think she took a phone call at some point because I could hear her talking, I think. She may have done some laundry too as I heard a machine humming at another point. I’m getting more and more anxious for her arrival as I try and flex my arms and legs and move my eyes and clear my throat. Oh, I can’t wait!
But now the day is getting on and I’m worried. Where is my benefactor; my friend? I can still hear some noises and movement from outside so I think she’s not far away but when will she come to me? When will she share with me the good news I have? This is interminable torture. I am so frustrated. I know; I’ll go to her! I try to crawl across the floor to the door but I’m still too weak. I manage to get a few inches before my legs can no longer push and my arms no longer pull. But I can barely turn my head so I twist it as best I can and close my eyes as I rest upon the floor, waiting for my Alice.
…and wait …and wait
I drift off to sleep and dream but I don’t dream yet. I have no memories to dream about so my dreams don’t exist. Maybe, one day…
I sleep, I think but I don’t know for how long because, before I can pick myself up I’m startled by the sound of my Alice coming! She is so close and I can’t wait to surprise her! I can’t wait to see the look on her face when I show her how far I’ve come! I don’t think I’ve ever felt anticipation before but I think I know what it feels like! She is near and over me and she reaches down with her hands. She picks me up with her strong hands and turns me over and holds me in her arms.
I can see her clearly now, really for the first time. She is older! Her hair is white and her cheeks are very pink and her eyes have deep, blue paint over them. Her face is very white and her lips are very red and twisted. She looks like a doll! A somewhat sad and silly one but, I won’t tell her that for I am so happy that I have her. Now, the moment I’ve been waiting for! She holds me in her arms and looks down at me making ‘sing-song’ sounds like she always does. But now I can see her funny, ‘coo-coo’, eyes as she does. And she says, “Hello, Mr. Bluesuit. How are we today?” And now is my moment! I try with all my might to look at her and see the look in her face when I do. My eyes flutter slightly as I turn them ever so slightly to look at hers but when I do and our eyes really meet (for the first time) something strange happens. Her eyes grow wide and I can feel her shaking. Her face changes and seems to darken, I think. I could be wrong but… Her breath grows shallow and I know it is time… I love her so much and I long to make her smile so with my now alive eyes looking at her and with all my strength I smile and croak out a weak… “Hel-lo Alice…” I don’t know why my creaky voice seemed to startle her so but it did. I thought she would be overcome by joy but the look she gave me broke my heart. She let go of me and I dropped to the floor with a hollow thump and looked up at her as she crawled away, bug-eyed and clutching her chest. She could hardly breathe as she wheezed away from me. “A-a-a-lissssss.” I hissed as best I could and reached for her with my weak little arms. She screamed and stumbled backwards away from me. I’m so confused! What have I done?! Why does she look at me with horror?! “A-A-A-Lisssss!” I cried to her… “A-ah-lisss…” I cry as non-existent tears well in my bright-painted eyes. She reels back and her face is twisted in a look that even terrifies me! “No! No!” she croaks as she falls near the door across the room. Her hand is twisted into a crooked claw scratching in the air but then it falls on top of her wheezing chest. “A-Ah-Lisss… no… no…” I crawl to her using every bit of strength I can muster. I must reach her! I just want to hold her and kiss her and tell her how much I love her. I want to tell her that it’s alright! That I’m alright. That there’s nothing to be afraid of. But, as I crawl slowly towards her I can hear her breath getting shorter and more labored and I can feel my efforts becoming more futile by the second. I must reach her! But, I’m afraid of how this will end. If my friend passes will I too pass back between nothingness and eternity?! If she breathes her last…? I crawl onward, pulling my little body with my little arms; my shiny, hard hands scratching and clawing at the hard, shiny floor. It is impossible! It is so hard… “A-a-a-lissssss!” I crawl and look up and she hardly moves now. “Ahhhlisssss!” I drag myself inch-by-inch and she’s very quiet now. I think I know what it feels to be doomed as I inch ever closer, knowing that at any moment… “Ahhlisss, please! Alice!” I’m almost to her now! Almost…if I can reach her I can pull myself up to her! I so want to hold her! I so want to thank her for what she’s done! I so want to lo… For More On James DeAcutis: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Peter-Cooper-and-the-Pirate-King/316901815000604
