Five Things Preparing for my Debut Taught Me
My debut novel, AMERICA'S NEXT REALITY STAR, was published a couple of weeks ago. There's so much excitement that goes into the days before the release, but there's also a lot of work involved.
The past year has been a bit of a whirlwind for me. After all the time I spent looking for an agent, and all the time I waited (sooooooooo patiently, let me tell you) to get an offer after signing with my agent, it occurred to me that I hadn’t really spent any time thinking about once happens once the deal is done.
Part of it was superstition: I didn’t want to act like I assumed I’d get a deal, because I didn’t want the universe to take that opportunity to laugh in my face. But part of it was simply things I hadn’t even thought about needing to know yet. It wasn’t until I started trying to figure out how to get people to buy my books that I realized. Even after I signed the contract, I was busy for a long time focusing on editing and copyedits and social media and not spending enough time looking at the bigger picture.
Here are five things I learned once I started doing the research.
1. I know nothing about marketing. Worse, I found the sheer amount of information out there to be completely overwhelming. Worse than that, when you’re trying to learn about marketing six months or even two months before a release, it’s difficult to measure whether you’re having any success at all. Is that one pre-order because of that guest blog I did? Or did my great aunt hear about the book from Grandma and head on over to preorder that day?2. Learning to market is work. This is important. There were days where I spent all my writing time reading about ways to get sales, researching and creating swag, or drafting articles and guest blogs to pitch. After several days in a row of this, I felt like I should be writing, like I’d accomplished nothing since I hadn’t added to my total word count. But learning how to sell books is just as important as writing and editing them, so it’s important to devote time to the process. And not to make myself feel like I’m not doing anything important.3. Twitter followers ≠ sales. Going into my debut year, I had about 4,000 followers on Twitter. I felt great about that. After all, my Twitter followers were primarily other writers and readers, right? People who’d want to read my book? Wrong. I’d say about one percent of my preorders came from Twitter followers as opposed to friends I met through Twitter, real-life friends, and family members. Building that audience is great, but don’t think everyone who favorites your tweets is going to rush out and buy your books. It doesn’t really work that way.4. Watching Amazon rankings will make you crazy. No, seriously. My New Year’s Resolution was to dial back to checking no more than once per day. It’s super exciting when that number creeps closer to #1. But here’s the thing: when your book goes up for preorder months before the release date, it’s not going to hit #1. It’s not even likely to go into the Top 100, not for a debut author. So you wind up refreshing and fixating on the number, with zero idea of how it correlates to actual sales. 5. I’m not good at anticipating what people want. I did a giveaway where people could buy my book for extra entries. The giveaway got hundreds of entries – exactly six people utilized that option. I did not require proof of purchase, and my Amazon numbers did not reflect six sales. One is someone I know bought the day before, and that was allowed. The others? No way to say. I also said I’d give feedback on non-winning entries for people who pre-ordered the book. Of the six sales, one person took me up on that offer. A few months later, I did another offer: free query critiques to the first 5 people who pre-ordered the books. In my ridiculous pride, I expected to be inundated with responses within a few minutes. Several friends shared the offer, but no one replied. Mathematically, this is a great deal. At the time, I was charging $10 for a query critique (now it's $15). So, for less than half the cost of a critique, a person could get one, and all they had to do was preorder my book. They didn’t have to read or review it. Heck, I couldn’t even stop them from canceling the preorder as soon as the critique was received. But no one bit, despite the fact that my query critiques usually do well when I donate to auctions and other contests.
Marketing a book can easily be a full time job of its own. As publishers take on more and more writers, much of the burden of convincing people to buy our books falls to us as writers. There are millions of books on Amazon – what makes someone choose ours over someone else’s? With so much at stake, it’s important to attack the task like any other job that needs to be done: do the research, make a plan, and stick with it. Part of me always hoped I’d be able to rely on my good looks and charm to sell books once they were out of the world. And, sure, I suppose those things would help if I were standing on street corners hawking my wares. But selling books online in the twenty-first century requires just as much dedication and creativity as writing the book in the first place.

Introducing WILD CARD UNDERCOVER
Today, I'm excited to announce the release of WILD CARD UNDERCOVER by friend and fellow #17Scribes member Kari Lemor! I was fortunate enough to allowed to read an advance copy of this book, and I tore through it. Meg and Chris's relationship was so much fun. Check out this fun new romantic suspense novel, then read an excerpt!
All that glitters in Miami is not gold . . .
Lured in by a bad ex-boyfriend and the moonlight of Miami, Meg O’Hara is trapped in a nightmare situation, waiting tables for a crime boss and fearing for her life. When undercover FBI agent Christopher Shaunessy offers her a way out, she seizes it. Getting the goods on Salazar Moreno might not be easy, but she’ll do anything to be freed from her servitude and Moreno’s sexual advances, even if it means moving in with the charismatic agent.Chris Shaunessy pretends to be Meg’s lover in order to keep her safe, but he steels his heart against further involvement. Passion has no place in the sordid world of organized crime. And yet, the closer they get to cracking the case, the stronger his feelings for the spirited waitress shine. It’s a dangerous game he’s playing, and taking Meg in his arms for real could prove a fatal misstep . . .
Excerpt:
“Does that man never have a day off?” Margaret Kathleen O’Hara grumbled, grabbing her tote bag and sarong to move surreptitiously along the chairs by the pool. If the hotel manager saw her here again she’d be toast. He’d more than toss her out. Threats to call the police had been thrown at her for months now. Although in her case, that might be a better deal.
With her eyes trained on his location and the Miami sun beating down on her exposed skin, Meg backed along the water’s edge attempting to leave the area before he spotted her. She needed to shower the chlorine out of her tangled hair and change for work soon. He looked in her direction and she rushed behind the closest object. It was six-foot-plus of blond-haired gorgeousness. The man’s eyes were glued to something on the upper deck. Her boss was sitting there with one of his expensive bimbos. Did Blondie like that type? Maybe he wouldn’t notice her little game of Hide and Seek
She leaned around him, ducking back when she saw the Pool Nazi still present. Getting caught was not an option. She already owed more than she could ever repay.
“Are you okay?” Forest green eyes stared down at her, puzzled. Would he buy that she was simply looking for shade? He was big enough to provide it.
With strong hands, he reached for her shoulders and Meg reflexively batted them away. She got enough of people groping her at work. Scorching curses froze before erupting from her mouth as the hotel manager moved, staring in their direction. Her mind kicked into overdrive, scrambling for a way to hide in plain sight.
“Sorry,” she squeaked. Grabbing the man’s head, she planted her mouth solidly on his. Short, thick strands of hair tickled her fingers. Firm lips yielded no resistance to the increased pressure of her mouth. Better make this look good.
An electric current skittered over her skin causing her heart to race. Maybe too good? Slowly he pulled her closer with his muscular arms. Her eyes flew open and she broke the connection. His hair-covered chest was too close for comfort. And much too tempting. Distance, she needed distance.
Her eyes darted around, seeing no signs of the manager. A sigh escaped. Time to make her exit as well.
“Sorry,” she mumbled again, looking up. Big mistake. The stranger’s curious eyes captivated her. They were soft and tender and filled with something she could…trust? If she still had any of that left in her. His hands were gentle as they held her. A tiny smile played about the full lips she’d brazenly kissed. She couldn’t believe she’d done it. Her mother would be appalled. But it had worked.
The chlorine scent from the pool faded into the background as sweat and suntan lotion wafted off the man’s damp skin. Her stomach did cartwheels followed by a few back flips. Dangerous.
“Let me go,” she hissed as reality returned. She gave a swift shove at his well-defined pectorals, rushing to get past, to escape from this distraction and the possibility of being caught. Her head whipped around at the sound of a splash and water droplets from behind. Gorgeous was just breaking the surface of the pool. Had she pushed him that hard?
“Oops.” No time for apologies. He looked like the forgiving type. She had to blow this joint before the Pool Nazi came back. Grabbing her fallen sarong, she ran across the deck to hustle inside the luxury hotel.
“Damn.”
The manager stood sentry near the front door. A crowd appeared at her back making that way impossible. The stairwell to the left would have to do. She’d go up a few floors then down to the side entrance. She wrapped her sarong around her as she carried out her plan to avoid being seen…and caught.
Meg should stop coming here to use the pool:,this proved it. Sneaking in was adding to her already hellish life but swimming always helped work out the stress and the pool here was more accessible than any other on the strip. Pretending she had money to stay in a place like this, rubbing elbows with all the beautiful people, yeah, that got her through too. She’d learned the best times to come and not be seen. Well, for the most part. It was well worth the risk to get away from her dump of a room and its enchanting neighborhood. She’d leave this all behind her soon. She kept telling herself that. Had to believe it for her own sanity.
Footsteps behind her pushed those thoughts away. Her bare feet padded silently along the lushly carpeted hallway. Heart racing, she ducked into the ice machine alcove, her sigh echoing in the silence. She glanced down. Her bag? She must have dropped it as she rushed off. How had she not realized? It couldn’t have been the threat of being arrested. Or the crooked smile of the handsome stranger she’d kissed. The one with the kind eyes and gentle hands. No, she couldn’t allow herself to be led astray by a pretty face. Not again.
She continued down the hall, her trip cut short when someone grabbed her by the arm and spun her around.

I can't even begin to express how excited I am to be writing this post. I first started writing AMERICA'S NEXT REALITY STAR in October 2013. And now, after months of querying, losing one agent, finding another, and even more months of submission, I'm thrilled to be sharing this story with the world. This has been such an amazing experience for me, and I want to thank all of you who've been with me since the beginning. Without this blog, without readers and Twitter and query contests, I may have considered giving up a long time ago.
In AMERICA’S NEXT REALITY STAR, Jen is cast on a reality show after she loses her job, her boyfriend, and her home. She hopes to win the cash prize but finds she also wants to win the heart of fellow contestant Justin. Fans of Sophie Kinsella's Confessions of a Shopaholic won't want to miss this charming, witty read published by Kensington’s Lyrical Shine.
About America’s Next Reality Star:
Title: America’s Next Reality StarAuthor: Laura HeffernanPublisher: Lyrical Shine - KensingtonSeries: Reality Star #1Release Date: March 7, 2017Genre: Contemporary RomanceISBN: 9781516101542
SEEKING THE SMART ONE
Twenty-four-year-old Jen Reid had her life in good shape: an okay job, a tiny-cute Seattle apartment, and a great boyfriend almost ready to get serious. In a flash it all came apart. Single, unemployed, and holding an eviction notice, who has time to remember trying out for a reality show? Then the call comes, and Jen sees her chance to start over—by spending her summer on national TV.Luckily The Fishbowl is all about puzzles and games, the kind of thing Jen would love even if she wasn’t desperate. The cast checks all the boxes: cheerful, quirky Birdie speaks in hashtags; vicious Ariana knows just how to pout for the cameras; and corn-fed “J-dawg” plays the cartoon villain of the house. Then there’s Justin, the green-eyed law student who always seems a breath away from kissing her. Is their attraction real, or a trick to get him closer to the $250,000 grand prize? Romance or showmance, suddenly Jen has a lot more to lose than a summer . . .

REVIEW: Single Malt by Layla Reyne
I'm excited to be part of the blog tour for SINGLE MALT by the amazing Layla Rayne. I was fortunate enough to get to read an advance copy of the book, and I've known Layla for years. I was so excited when I'd heard that agents Irish and Whiskey were going to have a three book series.

What I Liked:The book is well-written and fast paced. The romance builds slowly, but in a believable manner considering the characters' pasts and the fact that they work together. The characters weren't solving a murder. I feel like so many thrillers and romantic suspenses are about murder. Don't get me wrong, that's great–but at the same time, it was a bit refreshing to read something a bit different once in a while. The characters are well-rounded. They have interests and hobbies and lives and families outside of their jobs. Nearly all of the romantic suspense I've read has been the male main character protecting the female main character from danger (whether she wanted him to or not). I like that both main characters here are capable of taking care of themselves. It was a refreshing change. What I Didn't Like:Personally, I could've used a little more kissing, but that's just because I hated having to wait to see these two get together. :-) I also would have liked the book to have been a bit longer, because then there would've been room for more kissing scenes. Did I mention that I like the kissing?
Overall:
An exciting, entertaining romantic suspense. The sex is good, the characters are likable, and it's impossible not to root for them to get together. The twists throughout the story are believable but not so obvious I felt insulted as a reader.
Also, the writing is excellent, and the plot seemed new and fresh. I can't wait to read Cask Strength. Five stars.
Advanced praise for Single Malt:
A sexy, action-packed read that had me wanting the next book! --HelenKay Dimon, author of Mr. &; Mr. Smith
With sharp writing, compelling characters, and an engaging plot, Single Malt is the M/M romantic suspense series I've been waiting for. - Santino Hassell, award-winning author of the FIVE BOROUGHS series
"Single Malt is full of explosive chemistry, captivating characters, and edge-of-your-seat suspense. A must read for any romantic suspense fan!" -- Megan Erickson, USA Today Bestselling author

Coming May 1, 2017 - CASK STRENGTH (Agents Irish & Whiskey): Professionally, the FBI team of Aidan "Irish" Talley and Jameson "Whiskey" Walker is as good as it gets, closing cases faster than any team at the Bureau. Personally, it’s a different story. Aidan’s feelings for Jamie scare the hell out of him: he won’t risk losing another love no matter how heart-tripping the intimacy between them. And loss is a grim reality with the terrorist Renaud still on their trail, leaving a pile of bodies in his wake. Going undercover on a new case gets them out of town and off the killer's radar. They're assigned to investigate an identity theft ring involving a college basketball team in Jamie's home state, where Jamie's past makes him perfect for the role of coach. But returning to the court brings more than old memories. As secrets and shocking betrayals abound, none may be more dangerous than the one Jamie’s been keeping: a secret about the death of Aidan’s husband that could blow his partner's world apart and destroy forever the fragile bonds of trust and love building between them.

SINGLE MALT RELEASE BLITZ!
I'm excited to be part of the blog tour for SINGLE MALT by the amazing Layla Rayne. I was fortunate enough to get to read an advance copy of the book, and I've known Layla for years. I was so excited when I'd heard that agents Irish and Whiskey were going to have a three book series.
Let's here from Layla in her own words about how to balance a book deal with a full-time job.
Balancing a book deal with a full-time job.
Has been CHALLENGING. I have more flexibility than most in that I am my own “day-job” boss, but I’m a one-woman shop. I handle all the client demands, all the administrative tasks, and all the business development. It’s hard sometimes when writing is my dream job and I love it SO MUCH, but the day-job gives me the freedom and the funds to pursue writing. So, in order to make both work, I try to schedule writing time in the mornings, before the day-job gets rolling, then again in the late afternoons/evenings. Thankfully, I’m a night owl, a five-hour sleeper, and my husband is a Destiny/XBox addict, so nights are my most productive writing time. I also rely heavily on my west coast word sprint partners—Annabeth, Sarah and Alyson—and several local writing groups to keep me on track. Finally, NaNoWriMo events are key. Getting 50,000 words down in a month, no matter how ugly, is the Play-Doh I need to mold a novel into shape. Add another month or so to flesh it out and self-edit, and it’s generally a two-to-three-month process to write and get a manuscript to my agent or editor. Like I said, CHALLENGING, but I’m making it work and living my dream.
SINGLE MALT (Agents Irish & Whiskey) by Layla Reyne
The heart’s a resilient beast…Widower Aidan Talley refuses to love again. Enter handsome younger cyberagent, Jameson Walker. As they investigate cybercrimes and his late husband’s murder, Aidan falls hard for Jamie, putting their jobs, lives and hearts on the line. SINGLE MALT is perfect for fans of Mr. & Mr. Smith by HelenKay Dimon and the Cut & Run series by Abigail Roux and Madeleine Urban.

Excerpt from SINGLE MALTAidan came to slowly. The acrid smell of smoke stung his nostrils, something wet dripped down the side of his face, and his head throbbed like someone had taken a hammer to it. Eyes closed, shattered glass tinkled all around as he lifted a hand to his temple. Massaging the point of pain, his fingers came away sticky and wet.His aching brain was slow to catch on. One by one, it put together the pieces, and the terrible familiarity of his situation came into focus, knotting his gut and tearing at his chest.Blood.Broken glass.Engine smoke and airbag fumes. Not one but two SUVs barreling toward them.Car accident.Again.Present events collided with past memories of a similar, horrible night eight months ago.Tom clutching the dashboard with one hand and the handle above the Tesla’s passenger door with the other, bracing for impact, his face aghast in the oncoming high beams of the vehicle speeding toward them.Gabe’s frightened black eyes meeting his own in the rearview mirror, a second before his body was thrown sideways in the back seat, the crash of his skull against the window louder in Aidan’s mind than the grinding metal and splintering glass.Aidan’s insides tossing and turning with each flip of the car, free fall at its most terrifying. The scrape of asphalt against his arm, metal piercing skin, twisting and turning, as death pinned him in its grip.A weak gurgling cough yanked Aidan back to the present.Whiskey.Eyes popping open, he squinted against the bright morning light and gasped at the pain piercing his head and radiating down his right side. Fighting the blackness encroaching on the edges of his vision, he turned his head left, searching for his partner. His partner who’d driven the Rover with stunt-worthy precision out of the way of two oncoming SUVs, through a barrier, and down a cliff into a ravine. The hard landing had knocked Aidan out, but he’d woken upright and in one piece, relatively. Walker, just coming to, was held back against the driver’s seat by the taut seatbelt. He had his left hand up by his hairline, and when it fell limply into his lap, his fingertips were covered in blood. The strained belt snapped, and he began to crumple forward.“Whiskey.” Swatting the deflated airbags out of the way, Aidan reached over to hold Walker upright, pressing him back into the seat. “Stay with me.”Groaning, Walker rotated his head, his lashes dark against colorless cheeks. Bright red blood seeped from a gash at his hairline.Ignoring the pain in his side and the anvil in his head, Aidan unbuckled his seatbelt and stretched across the console to hold Walker’s face in his hand, giving his unshaven cheek a firm but careful pat.“Come on, Jamie. Open those beautiful blue eyes for me.”Walker’s forehead wrinkled and his eyelids fluttered open, the gaze beneath them hazy and unfocused. “Irish?”Pure relief and blinding need propelled Aidan across the console. Fingers digging into Walker’s neck, he slammed their mouths together and tasted the precious life flowing from his partner’s lips. Aidan had wanted this the past three weeks, but he’d denied the attraction between them. Because they were partners. Because he was still grieving. But in the aftermath of this latest accident, too much like the one that’d stolen the last man he’d loved, Aidan needed to know the man beside him, the man he could but couldn’t love, was alive.Walker gave a surprised jerk, then, catching on, angled his head and parted his lips, his warm breath rushing into Aidan’s mouth. Granted entrance, Walker’s slow kiss was no match for Aidan’s desperation. For the fear that laced each swipe of his tongue. For the longing that shook his fingers and caused him to groan. For the darkness that grew closer with each stolen breath.“You’ll be okay, Whiskey,” he whispered against his lips.Relief for Walker’s safety, for his life, made Aidan’s slide into darkness smooth, not the tossing and turning of his nightmarish memories.“Irish, hold on,” was the last thing he heard before falling forward into Walker’s big body and letting oblivion take him.

Cover Reveal for THE HEARTBEAT HYPOTHESTIS
Today I am ecstatic to be revealing the cover for THE HEARTBEAT HYPOTHESIS by Lindsey Frydman! I was fortunate enough to first discover Lindsey's story when I mentored the New Agent contest during the summer of 2015. I fell in love immediately with her heart-wrenching story and beautiful writing. And now it's being published!
And now for the cover!
ABOUT THE HEARTBEAT HYPOTHESIS
Audra Madison simply wanted to walk in the shoes of Emily Cavanaugh, a free-spirited teenager who died too young. After all, Audra wasn’t supposed to be here.
Thanks to Emily, Audra has a second chance at life. She’s doing all the things that seemed impossible just two years ago: Go to college. Date. Stargaze in the Rocky Mountains. Maybe get a tattoo. You know, live.
Jake Cavanaugh, a photographer with mysterious, brooding gray eyes, agrees to help chronicle her newfound experiences. She makes him laugh, one of the only people who can these days. As they delve into each other’s pasts – and secrets – the closer they become.
But she’s guarded and feels like she can’t trust anyone, including herself.
And he’s struggling with the fact that his beloved sister’s heart beats inside her.
THE HEARTBEAT HYPOTHESIS RELEASES MARCH 20, 2017
PREORDER: AmazonABOUT LINDSEY FRYDMAN
Lindsey has been writing since she was nine years old, when she discovered the awesomeness that is Harriet the Spy. Her books always include a romance, though sometimes there’s an added sci-fi or magical realism twist. She lives in Columbus, Ohio (where the weather is never quite right). Her BFA in Photography and Graphic Design has granted her a wide assortment of creative knowledge that serves as inspiration (and not much else). When she’s not crafting YA and NA stories, you'll likely find her spending waaay too much time on Pinterest, playing a video game, singing show-tunes, or performing in a burlesque show—because she enjoys giving her introversion a worthy adversary. (Plus, it's the closest to Broadway she’ll ever get.) Lindsey was a proud 2016 Pitch Wars Mentee and thoroughly adores being a part of the wonderful writing community. THE HEARTBEAT HYPOTHESIS is her debut novel.

A hunted pirate captain. A reverend's daughter determined to bring him down.
On a lush, secluded island, one passionate adventure leads to another….
Diana Fletcher means business. The beautiful, innocent, reverend’s daughter has traveled all the way to a tropical island off Madagascar on a mission: To find her brother—and to punish the man who drove him to a life of piracy. But when she comes face to face with the enemy in question, the handsome, powerfully seductive man is not at all what Diana expected…
Tristan Kent never intended to harm Diana’s brother. A man of humble origins, Tristan claims he tried to save him from another ruthless captain. Diana is desperate to believe he is telling the truth…and that the intoxicating desire that escalates between them is true as well. But can she trust him? Or is Tristan’s story—and his heart—nothing more than fool’s gold? Amid the haze of sensual delights and soaring ecstasy Tristan has in store for her, all will be revealed…
Excerpt:
Women hadn’t been born to yield. Women could yield. They might even enjoy doing so, but only with the right man. One they desired. First came desire. Respect and love followed.
She could only deliver her heart to a man like that.
Even if Tristan wasn’t facing the gallows, he wasn’t the one she needed. His skin was warm against hers but what of it. He was handsome as the devil, yet there was the rub, because he was also brutal, violent, taking what he wanted. His mouth on hers was something she refused to consider, though she could hardly forget how he’d spoken calmly when she’d railed. She insulted and he smiled. He claimed she wanted the same as him. Diana did not. She wanted to be home. She needed to be free.
Her eyes flew open. A sound or voice had awakened her. Reclined on her side, she faced away from the door. An oil lamp had gone out, telling her she’d slept far too long, recklessly too.
Oh my God. Peter.
Diana rolled onto her back but didn’t check his mattress, knowing he wasn’t there or in the cabin.
Tristan was. His long legs, muscular calves, and thighs blocked her view of the door. He’d placed his precious book on the table. The volume was safe. She was not.
Before she could push to a sitting position or think to fight, he straddled her, his hands circling her wrists, holding her arms to each side. His touch didn’t harm, at least not yet.
Her heart pounded.
He offered a smile.
How dare he be so smug. “Release me at once.”
He tightened his grip slightly and studied her mouth, then her eyes. “Violet.” Awe flooded his face. “I wondered about your eye color but never expected this.”
She pushed and writhed but did no good against his strength. Breathless, she stopped. “What have you done with Peter?”
Tristan stared at her eyes. “Amazing color, quite beautiful. Fits your dark hair and pale skin perfectly.”
She rammed her thighs into him.
He held her more firmly. “Stop that.”
“Not until you tell me what you’ve done with my brother.” She slammed into him.
He scooted down and trapped her legs. “Peter’s on the main deck with the other men.”
“He’s a child and proved it by helping you escape.”
“This wasn’t his doing, and you’ve no reason to fear for his safety. I have James, my quartermaster, looking after him.”
“A bloody pirate, you mean. The same as you. Perhaps even worse than you.”
“No. James is a good man.” A haunted look touched Tristan’s features before he shook off whatever had troubled him and became casual. “He saved my life. He’ll take great care to watch your brother.”
She wanted to retort but couldn’t reconcile her indignation with Tristan’s previous anguish and the mean scratches she’d left on his cheek. Dried blood had gone black, the surrounding skin swollen and red. “What do you mean he saved your life?”
“Just that, ask no more for I’ll give you no other answer.”
“The only thing I want from you is my freedom.”
He stroked her wrists. “You want the same as me.”
She pushed against him, straining with the effort.
He tightened his grip, proving she wasn’t a match for his strength. If he chose to take her now, she’d have no choice except to allow him what he willed.
She didn’t beg. Wouldn’t. Not to him or any man, including Bishop. They could conquer her body but not her spirit, never her heart. Reconciled to her fate, she grew limp as she could, pulse racing. “Take what you’ve come for and be quick about it.”
“I shan’t be quick, Diana. With you, I’ll never be quick.”
Heat stung her face and throat. “You won’t be the last, either.”
His gray eyes darkened as storm clouds do, danger building in them. “What do you mean?”
“When you’re finished with me, I go to the man to whom I truly belong. Nothing will change that no matter how long you intend to take raping me.”
Despite her harsh words, he didn’t flinch or frown.
“Who is this man with whom you’d willingly lie?”
“Willingly?” She laughed. “You believe I’ve chosen him any more than I’ve chosen you? The fact is you’ve driven me to him.”
“What do you mean? Who is he? Tell me.”
She turned her face away.
Tristan brushed his lips over her cheek and buried his face in her hair.
Her scalp tingled. She could scarcely draw enough air to speak. “I said, be quick about it.”
He took his time, his lips soft and warm against her temple and ear, breath heated and sweet.
She tensed even more, determined to resist.
“Why do you fight me when you want this as much as I do?” He kissed her jaw.
Pleasure rushed through her, delight making her come alive as she never had, the feelings new, troubling, far too exciting. Her lids slid down.
“Tell me who the man is.”
Tristan’s scent surrounded her, surprisingly clean, tinged with musk.
“Tell me, Diana.”
“Why?”
He suckled her neck.
She trembled, an unfamiliar ache building between her legs, tension mounting within her. Flustered, she fought his hold and failed, growing weak from his imposing size. However, she refused to surrender, wanting him to know what he’d done to her. “He’s a wealthy merchant who agreed to help me find Peter if I promised to become his mistress, which I shall.”
“Never.” His breath skipped over her skin. “No one will have you but me.”
She fumed, her previous weakness gone. “You’ll take me. You’ll never have me.”
“Nor will the wealthy merchant. He owns this ship? Is his name Benedict Bishop?”
Tristan kept surprising her, giving her no defense. She pushed against him.
He eased back. “Is that the merchant’s name?”
“Yes. He’s the man to whom I belong.”
“Not any longer.”

Congratulations to J.C. Lane on being nominated for an Agatha Award!
J.C. Lane’s TAG, YOU’RE DEAD, the 2014 Query Kombat Grand Prize Runner-Up and YA Champion, has been nominated for the Agatha Award for Best Children’s/YA mystery! The Agatha Award is presented by the annual Malice Domestic conference, which celebrates mysteries. This is the second Agatha nomination for J.C. Lane, who also writes mysteries for adults as Judy Clemens and was nominated for the Agatha for Best First Novel for TILL THE COWS COME HOME in 2004.
Six young people play a dangerous Game of Tag in public, chasing through the crowds, streets, and buildings of Chicago. This secret, one-of-a-kind, wildly expensive Game offers a macabre twist to the childhood version…if you get Tagged, you get Dead.
Three "Its" have their reasons for buying a place in the Game. Surgically enhanced Brandy is obsessed with destroying a naturally beautiful girl. Untalented Robert covets his target's position as superstar of the basketball team. Brainiac Charles craves a battle against an intellectual equal. Given their elite social status, they reject any possible downside to the contest. Each expects the satisfaction of killing their prey, then walking away.Hand-picked innocents play as “Runners,” under threat to their loved ones should they refuse to participate: lovely, small-town Laura; celebrated athlete Tyrese; and Amanda, gamer extraordinaire. Alone, hunted by their adversary, each feels a single hope…to survive.
Technological wizardry controls the Game. As soon as Runners receive the “Go” signal on smartwatches locked to their wrists, the Game rockets them through the city, from the El to Michigan Avenue to the Lincoln Park Zoo. There is no time to rest. Every thirty minutes the Runner’s location is transmitted to the It, which steadily diminishes the Runner’s chance of ever reaching Home Base alive.

The Game will not end until someone is Tagged, so the Runners must choose how to play. Will they accept death? Murder their Its? Or find a way to use individual strengths to stop the Game before anyone dies?

Title: 27 Hours (The Nightside Saga. #1)Author: Tristina WrightRelease Date: October 3, 2017
Book Description: Rumor Mora fears two things: hellhounds too strong for him to kill, and failure. Jude Welton has two dreams: for humans to stop killing monsters, and for his strange abilities to vanish.
But in no reality should a boy raised to love monsters fall for a boy raised to kill them.
Nyx Liorca keeps two secrets: the moon speaks to her, and she’s in love with Dahlia, her best friend. Braeden Tennant wants two things: to get out from his mother's shadow, and to unlearn Epsilon's darkest secret.
They’ll both have to commit treason to find the truth.
During one twenty-seven-hour night, if they can’t stop the war between the colonies and the monsters from becoming a war of extinction, the things they wish for will never come true, and the things they fear will be all that’s left.
