Goodbye 2014, and hello paperbacks!
First things first: Paperbacks are out! Just before Christmas, my kids and I met up with some friends at The Grove to take pictures with Santa. The photo went about as well as could be expected.
Sadie looks like she wants to be adopted for Christmas, and Lincoln just looks embarrassed to be involved. At least he got to wear his army-on-army toddler tuxedo. That’s a win for everyone.
Anyway, the “North Pole” happened to be set up just outside the Barnes and Noble, so of course I couldn’t resist...

Real mer-authors…are a little too into photoshop
It’s a big day, ladies and gentlemen: My incredibly talented agency sister HélèneBoudreau launches the fourth book in her Real Mermaids series today, and needless to say, the Clan MacLeod is VERY excited about it.
Here’s a little preview of the book:
Being a Teenage Mermaid is No Day at the Beach
A tropical vacation sounds like the perfect way to spend fall break—even for an aqua-phobic mer-girl like Jade. She can’t wait to enjoy the warm sunshine and all-you-can-eat buffet with her best friend...

My apology to Portland
Every author out there will tell you never to read reviews, and for the most part, I follow this rule. It’s the only way to stay sane, and after all—reviews aren’t for authors. They’re for readers, and no matter how great the good reviews feel, the bad reviews feel worse—and they stick with you.
Objectively, I don’t even mind bad reviews. In fact, I love every single review I get, and I’m grateful for all of them, no matter the content. The idea of anyone passionately discussing my story, and...

LAUNCH DAY
Well, it finally happened. Poor Little Dead Girls has been launched out into the world, like a debutante in a $4,000 wedding dress that’s hiding a flask full of marshmallow vodka.
It’s incredibly exciting, and a little strange, because these days on launch day…nothing really happens. Hardcovers have already started shipping, the ebook has been out for weeks, and reviews, great and not so great, have been up on Goodreads, Amazon, and various review blogs for months now.
But still, this was the m...

Guest interview on my bookish ways
I’m honored to be featured on My Bookish Ways, today! Kristen Centorcelli reviews urban fantasy, suspense, horror, and other books in the realm of the generally dark and twisty, so I’m in very good company. Head on over to her site to read about my writing process, the merits of terrible television, and why my main character is kind of a jerk, but I love her anyway.

The terrifying, exciting, excruciating moment that is seeing your cover for the first time

Pretty much like that.
Of all the moments of idle fantasy that get authors through those months (years?) of slogging through a debut draft, the one that gets the most attention is also the most vain: Picturing seeing their future book cover, and most importantly their name on that cover, for the first time.
I wish I could say this wasn’t the case for me, but I’d be lying. I thought about that damn cover all the time—obsessively, even—and while I have about as much design sense as a colorblind m...
