The Important Thing for You: Maxim Behar PR Is My Life

N.K:Max, Hello!

M.B:Hi, Nicky!

N.K:Recently you published your book "The Global PR Revolution", what will we find in it?

M.B:First of all, the book gives information about what is happening in the world right now. Not only in the field of PR, but in general when it comes to public communications. I am the person who wrote it, so I cant give a clear opinion because as they say "I'm inside the forest" and I can not look at the trees from the outside. The very process of writing lasted a year and then another year had to pass before the US publishers fully edited it. I believe that through the book I was able to look at many interesting and present-day issues and topics related to public communications. However, I can't hide my surprise after the "World PR Revolution" has been a bestseller for two weeks atwww.amazon.com. Maybe that shows, perhaps, there is interesting information in it. The opinion of 100 people leading PR experts from all around the world, as well as 65 countries that share their views on how the Public Relations business is evolving in the world, influenced a lot the writing process of that book. There are many stories, as well as my personal ones from Bulgaria that tell much about our country. This is a book published in America by a very large publisher and it is important for Bulgaria, as it is important you and I, and many other people - everyone to tell a little bit about our beautiful country. So step-by-step, part by part, we will solve the big puzzle and people around the world will see that Bulgaria is a great country.

N.K:What exactly is PR for you? Lets remind our wide audience that you are a journalist.

M.B:Yes, once a journalist a lifetime journalist. 25 years ago I started a new business, Public Relations which in Bulgaria at that time was almost unknown. That was the logical continuation of what I did while being a journalist. I created content, tried to make it interesting and understandable. So, it seems to me, we managed to make a good company, which already a quarter of a century is on the market and is among the leading companies in the industry. Most importantly, Nicky, I much enjoyed and still enjoy my work. Every morning when I drive my car to the office, I flip different thoughts through my head: how I will wish my secretary a nice day, how I will congratulate my colleagues, where I will go first, which project today should I do. That has been a fact for nearly ten thousand days pretty much time and it still makes me bursting of joy. For me, PR is my life.

N.K:Thats great. But are you a good manager and a good boss? Do you usually take the right decisions?

M.B:I have no idea. Now I am writing a book about modern management, a major Bulgarian publisher asked for it and there I describe different occasions and events. Sometimes I think I'm good, sometimes I don't think I'm so good.

N.K:Have you ever fired someone because of something? Do you give a second chance?

M.B:No, I have never fired anyone, ever! Thats not my way, I'm giving up to 10 chances. This doesnt mean I am being soft, on the contrary, it is a glimpse into the future a vision for at least 2, 3, 4, 5 years forward. No one has ever been born educated, I have said it to my colleagues many times, especially those who are new in the company. I can make from an amateur - professional for 5-6 months, but I cant make the lazy one - hardworking. I cant change the schemer into a team worker. These are qualities that every person possesses and I cannot change them. However, if one wants to learn, he can learn from us. I've trained hundreds, maybe thousands of different people. From the youngest, being 15-16 years of age to the other age categories. Many are on the market right now and they write to me very often. Almost every week I get long messages on social media, mainly on Linkedin. In those messages they describe moments and situations that we have experienced together. In that sense, I think I'm a good manager. Of course, like everything in life, there are some pros and cons. In my opinion, what makes a leader is not how much he/she earns, not whether he has large market positions. A leader is great when he creates good working teams from which other people become leaders as well. This is what makes a good manager a great leader.

N.K:I had the pleasure of attending the 25th anniversary of M3 Communications Group Inc., your company. I saw that your children - both your real children and the team, stayed until 23:00 00:00 oclock. That says a lot. If you were a pro forma boss, they would have left 21:00 22:00 o clock. That means you're successful. Many people work or want to work in large companies. Can you give three tips to the employees who want to be part of big, influential companies?

M.B:First of all, they must be very honest and loyal. That is the basis of everything for both employees and managers. If someone goes to a company and is not welcomed how its supposed to be or it is not respected - better not to stay there at all. Of course, each one should consider its place in the company. It seems to me that there should be a very good parity in the relationship between the manager and the employee. I hate the word employer and I think it is not important at all who owns the company, but who manages it. A good parity is important because the employee has to take a step as well as the manager, meeting somewhere in the middle. Now, in 2020 I like to take control of my company horizontally - to be one of the many, not the person standing at the top. Of course, I have my responsibility as a manager and the man who makes the decisions. However, when it comes to doing projects, we are all equal. I have a very interesting case that is related to that. 3-4 years ago, an ex-employee called me. A very nice girl. Back then she worked in one of the big women's magazines, maybe even still working, and she said:
 - "Boss, I know that in the team of M3 has a lot of women, now we are looking for the woman of the year and we have to create a rating. Can you present to us one of your employees? "

I replied:
-"Villy!"
There was silence for about 30 seconds:
-"Villy who, the cleaning lady?"
-"Of course the cleaning lady." That's my woman of the year. She's been working on our team for 20 years. She does her job wonderfully and most of all is a very good woman."
Now she is retired, but she comes to all of our celebrations and we maintain a great relationship. After all, Villy became a woman of the year. A lot of other women and girls have been part of M3, but I didn't hesitate for a second. It doesn't matter if you're a manager, a secretary, an assistant or a cleaning lady. The important thing is how you do your job, what attitude you have towards your life and your colleagues.

N.K:How many salaries do you have to provide?

M.B:At that moment 40-50 people are working in our company but before the crisis of 2009 they were much more.

N.K:This is a huge responsibility.

M.B:Thats right but even one salary is a huge responsibility. It all depends on how you consider it.

N.K:You are one of the first people to have realized Facebook in its many dimensions. Not just for a chat, relationship or love. But mainly being a social phenomenon and you even wrote a book about it. What are the differences in traditionally making PR and using social media?

M.B:There are a lot of differences. If we go back to my book "The World PR Revolution" it will become clear that a major part of this revolution is in the change of ownership of the media. In a traditional media Internet, TV or newspaper there are journalists, publishers, editors-in-chief who manage this media. Viewed objectively, the user of this media the reader or the viewer has no direct access to it. Social media is a quite different case - you, your team, we all have media in our hands. We manage them and that makes us major editors of these media. No matter how much you underestimate Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram or any other account or profile, some people have over 1 million followers, even in Bulgaria. Televisions do not have such an audience, not to mention newspapers. Social media has totally changed our lives, I'm sure - for better. They allowed each one to express itself, to be able to influence if we have something to say. Nowadays a taxi driver in his garage using a second-hand laptop, if it is intelligent and has something to say can be much more popular than any politician in Bulgaria. I am saying that with some uncertainty whether politics are a good example for comparing.
N.K:Of course, if a person is original and has some catchy information to share, it will be interesting for the audience.

M.B:Definitely. The other huge difference is in the popularity of each one of us. Just 10-15 years ago, who were the popular people? politicians, people from the show business and sportsmen. Now everyone who has media in their hands has something to say and shares it in an interesting way can influence and be much more popular than anyone else.

N.K:Have you ever turned back a client or company and why?

M.B:Many times. We refuse for two reasons: 1st of all when we dont feel chemistry with our customers. For me, this is of most importance. When we talk to a client and see what he wants and how he wants to achieve it, we know if we are playing on the same team. Of course, some have not liked us, because we thought that, let's say, are part of the grey market. We have never been and will never be part of that kind of business. We also refuse when we see that the customer is asking for things that cant be achieved. I will tell you about such a situation:
Many years ago our office was situated in a small building, you also visited that place. One day I was sitting on my desk, doing work as usual. Suddenly the door opens with a kick and a man wearing a black T-shirt and a black jacket enters the place. He sat down holding a plastic bag in his hand and said:
   - "Are you Behar, the famous one?"
   - "I am Maxim Behar, yes" I answered as I was working.
   - "I was told that your price is 5000 dollars."
I didn't know exactly what I was supposed to answer and asked:
 - "What's that all about?"
He put the bag on the table and pulled from it some amount of money:
 - "Heres 5000 bucks. I want an interview to be published on the front page of newspaper X next Friday.
Meanwhile, I see two guards standing outside the door, four more in front of the building, and a few cars waiting for that man. I realized that there's no way I can say no to him and just kick him out.
That's why I said:
 - "It is possible but we have to do brainstorming (a technique for generating creative ideas), it will take around 6 hours."
He looked at me and said:
   - "What is this?"
   - "Well, just brainstorming, then we will prepare a strategy. It will take some time, about 1-2 weeks. Then we will make another appointment with my team. "
Suddenly he got up and replied:
 - "I was told you were a specialist. Nonsenses, thats not true and you're not an expert! "
He took his bag and left. That's how I refused on this guy.

N.K:Do you change your clients' opinion or is it pointless?

M.B:Very often, even always. We are experts if a client comes to our company, it means that they need a piece of expert advice. To this day, even today I always tell the customers: "If you have an opinion, what do you need me for? Why are you coming to us? You want to give your money when you know how it works?" I often give an example of being a dentist. When you go to the dentist, do you tell him what to do? If you know what to do, go in front of the mirror and fix your teeth by yourself. You go to the dentist because you put the decisions about your health in his hands. I believe that we are professionals and we have proven that we are doing our job perfectly. We've done about 5700 projects. I stopped counting them when they were around 5200-5300. Every one of these projects has gone through my brain, my eyes, through the decisions I've made. I believe that we have enough experience to have the confidence to know what is best for our customers. I haven't had a single case when advising a client, defending my opinion and being wrong at the end.

N.K:Will you share with us some practical advice you have given to the companies you are consulting?

M.B:What should not be underestimated at any price is the importance of reacting immediately. That is one of the most basic things I can share. Crisis management is a serious field. Ten years ago, it was very easy. You wake up in the morning and open the newspaper, there you see that someone has written something bad for a company or a person that is your client. You call the boss and say that there's a problem. You go to his/her place, drink a coffee together or have lunch. Then you come up with a press release, possibly invite journalists to a press conference. The fact is that you have 10-12 hours to solve the case. Now we don't have 10 minutes even. We must be ready to respond immediately, we must have a combination of quick reactions and super broad knowledge to be in that business. Often people who cause a crisis or have a bad opinion about our clients are right. Then we immediately advise our clients to say: "Okay, that's right, we were wrong. Of course, we will compensate you." But if they are not right, we advise reacting honestly, honorably, with the responsibility that comes when being moral because nothing can remain hidden anymore. Very often we have customers who tell us: "Let it go, it will pass." What it means "will pass", how it will pass..? Probably it will, but it will remain the memory that such a case has happened, that we have not responded to it and we havent come up with a professional reaction. Thats why the fastest and most accurate reaction is of great significance. Understanding our business Public Relations and what we do, as well as the importance of the way we manage social media is also a distinction, and we work very hard so that our customers know it.

N.K:Maxim, what's important to you?

M.B:Happiness. It is very important that we are happy at work, with our families, with the people who surround us, with those who we share our most precious time. It seems to me that if a person is not happy, it cant do anything. It cannot be useful to itself or the people around and society in general. Of course, what you leave behind is essential. I'll repeat my words: A great leader is the one who creates new leaders. When I see so many of my colleagues with whom I work taking independent and professional decisions, having in mind that with some of them we have been working for 15 years so far, it gives me great pleasure and makes me professionally happy. There's nothing more important than happiness.

N.K:Is there one of your students who has surpassed you?

M.B:Sure. First of all, thank you for being part of the presentation of my book at Greenwich's bookstore. That event was attended by several people who used to be my colleagues. I shared my opinion on whos a real, great leader with them as well and while signing their books, I said: "Thats about you" because I have colleagues who used to have not so attractive positions and now many of them are very well represented in large companies and are even managers. I am very proud of that fact.

N.K:Thank you very much for this interview!

M.B:I am thankful. Be safe!

Maxim Behar: 10 Tips on How to Handle Business From Home
Right? No one was expecting this week's turn of the circumstances. Not even what happened before that week. It is already clear that in just a few months everything will change and nothing will be as it used to be, neither us nor our business, not even friends and companies.
But now, all of us who are in the active and fast-changing business, are completely obsessed with thinking how to keep up at least at the same pace. And to make this happen after the first ten days of running your business from home, having dozens of video chats every day, I think there are at least ten most important things to keep up to, to know and to remember in order everything to go smooth. Probably, they are not ranked by importance because everyone has their priorities, but surely they all give a complete picture of our rather unusual daily lives.
1. Be pragmatic. Leave your philosophical analysis for another time. Especially now when we use video chats to connect and more than two people are involved in the call. Save your explanations, interpretations, unnecessary and non-essential words and concentrate only on the results of the meeting. Take notes and try not to go into disputes - in most cases conflicts do not lead to anything positive.
2. Fully organize your day as you usually do, not minding the present situation. Get up on time and do everything you're used to shower, coffee, breakfast, sports... all the habits that you have had even though they are now limited within your home. This will give you the confidence and balance to be able to perform your business tasks fully and will definitely help you concentrate.
3. Make up a plan on how exactly you want your day to pass and come up with clear ideas about what you need to do. Do your tasks on time, structure them in order of importance and tick off what was already done. If the time was not enough to do all your duties be sure to add them to the next day's tasks. However, try not to let this happen.
4. Keep dense concentration and do not get distracted. Sitting at home is too depressing for many reasons meetings with people you usually only meet in the evenings, pets, favorite books, movies... Those are the things that we don't find in the offices but even without wanting, we can devote ourselves to them and impair business tasks. Our families may also suffer because of that.
5. Choose a good and reliable program/app for video calls. The most accessible and easy to service is Zoom, but there are many others on the market whose interface can fit you much better. It is important that you feel comfy using it, but most importantly you should be capable of using all the functions of the program/app. Avoid video calls with more than 3-4 people, if the whole office has to be involved, organize the meetings no more than once per week and be brief and specific.
6. Arrange your workplace in the best possible and convenient way, which is as close as possible to your work environment in the office. Coffee mug, laptop, notebook, everything should be in place. Forget about any sofas, pillows, armchairs... as well as everything else that differs from your office environment. That way you will get closer to your normal working environment and you will certainly feel more fulfilling and complete.
7. Make sure you get out in fresh air and rest enough on the window, terrace, garden. Take walks, do gymnastics, move even more than you do in the office but mostly do not let your dark thoughts and laziness find a place in your consciousness. You are at work and that is foremost. You have to succeed every day, every minute, and your condition is of the utmost importance that this happens.
8. Try to think not only days but months ahead. Predict the changes that can occur in your business, analyze different patterns and be open to all possibilities, however, don't let yourself predict an apocalypse. Nowadays many managers make a big mistake they have a pessimistic expectation, no matter what level they are. Yes, it's a fact that there are sectors in business that will never be as they used to be, for some it will take years to regain power again, but there is always a way to change the concept and get even better.
9. Be attentive to the people around you, even more than necessary. The "Prison" at home is a rather atypical situation, especially for people of active age who have to cope with active management, performing all types of activities. The risk of confusing your office environment with your home and without even understanding making a mess of feelings, relationships and conversations is too big and can complicate your personal life at the same time, but also the business you are engaged in.
10. Last but foremost the balance between the team and the customers. I have always claimed that the team should be more important than any client because it is in the core of the business and if the team is made of professionals who are perfectly organized as a puzzle, the customers will appear without any effort. Now, more than ever, a good balance needs to be found between a perfectly working team and the clients who are well-understanding the endless power of business communication. Indeed, we have in our hands beautifully working online tools and if we can manage them skillfully there is no doubt that we will keep developing our business and we will make the team even better working. The truth is that the balance between these two realities will make us more self-assured and confident in success.
Of course, these tips are just an opinion of what we can do in order not to feel the difference in doing business, or at least to soften this abrupt transition from one to another way of working. However, at the heart of everything is to be proactive, resourceful and very creative so that each of us can spin the ship in the right direction. Now like never before, the speed of change is way too fast.

Home office is the new business
When we get out of the current crisis, we need to become not only better people but better managers as well.
Maxim Behar

So, what happened was hardly expected in the business from now on we have long weeks, and probably months, of work from home. And no one was prepared for such a case. We had financial, economic, food and more crises, we were without power and water, we had empty shops and blocked streets But a crisis like that was never considered, even in the most unexpected sci-fi movies we have ever imagined of.
We never thought that there is a chance to work only from home .
For many of you, it is impossible to work that way where the mass productions are, where people are taken care of, bank counters, shops and thousands of other places - there is no way home office could work for these sectors. However, for many professions, this is now not only possible but required and obligatory.
In the genesis of thoughts and feelings is that there is no way the whole nation (maybe even the whole world) to be in a state of emergency and our offices not to be. Even more - the state somehow has enormous resources and - I hope - a good working engine, while offices, companies, enterprises and different businesses need a "total change" in their new life of emergency, breaking new grounds.
The first and most important rule is:Forget that something out of the ordinary is happeningand behave as if we were to go to work early in the morning. It may even seem a little extreme, and perhaps crazy, but getting up at the hour we usually do every normal day, getting dressed, as well as the time in front of the mirror - gives us the confidence that we are really going to work. These are the habits that we normally associate with our work rhythm. Above all, now we can break free from the time spend in public transport and get away with the traffic jams which are something casual in the big cities. Those are some of the great advantages of home office that cant be dismissed. All in all - we should go to work - the good news is that we already are at work.
Right after realizing that, we should set the environment, so that to feel comfortable and cozy while working. In fact, this is the most difficult task for us of course we need to feel good while working but mostly we need to be strict with ourselves and not let falling behind with the tasks in the office or with our clients. Especially important is that for journalist who have to give clear information to their readers.
But there is another risk - constant distracting. The TV, the kids, the partner, Facebook friends, the neighbors there is always someone who will distract our attention, and in the end, overcoming this risk is fundamental for our iron self-discipline. The companies where we all work, without exception, are having a difficult time and we are always there to help them and help ourselves as well. Without a very high degree of loyalty, motivation and - as I said self-discipline, this is impossible. In difficult times, managers, customers, colleagues expect from us immeasurably more than in "peacetime" and we have to give it to them if we really want to stay in business.
A huge advantage is to choose a good video call program / app, a real-time experience that connects you not only with colleagues and clients from all around the world, but also with loved ones and friends who support you - people with whom you share opinions, concerns, and most of all, an experience of living in a isolates and secluded environment. In my office, we chose Zoom, ignoring the already known Skype or Go to meetings and the choice was very good. With that app we make daily conferences with the various departments or sectors in my company. I also gather in extraordinary circumstances the Board of the World Communication Forum in Davos, of which I am president. Those are people from over 15 countries, living in many different time zones, still - in real time the program is doing great.
Now more than ever, it is important not to "over communicate" or to go into lengthy and unnecessary explanations with colleagues or clients. The danger of confused communication is not to be underestimated. We all know very well what is happening on social media and to what gigantic confusions are leading the misunderstandings, especially now that people are much more upset. Speak briefly and clearly, give your opinion accurately and strictly. Its good to write down in advance what you have to say, because the ultimate goal is to understand and get the job done.
After all, real-time video communication is the thinnest moment of working in the new environment, because all the confusion can come from there. That's why - when it comes to business, everyone should be behind a desk, table or in a place that is closest to office conditions, which will mobilize you and make you absolutely equal with each other on screen.
Avoid video meetings with more than 10 - 12 people, even try to add as less as possible members. That is how the reach becomes better, the messages clearer and the whole conversation is pragmatic and has some real results. In fact, pragmatic is the most accurate word we need to use in every minute of our business conversations, in our relationships with colleagues, customers and partners. Now is not the time for emotions and long explanations, everyone needs to know their exact tasks, to complete them on time, to read, to read a lot, and to take notes about all the interesting things we learn about the new way of life and to immediately share this information with the people around us. However being at home, sometimes we feel upset, perhaps even confused but we must remember that we are at work for both our clients and our colleagues.
Last but not least - one of the most important things is the peace that actually comes as a consequence of good organization. Take walks, even at home between the rooms or in front of the block, often open the windows at home, read books and watch YouTube videos that will advise you how to stay calm and how to be balanced and positive with your loved ones and your colleagues and customers as well.
And remember the most important thing - the crisis, this so unexpected and unknown crisis, must definitely make us even better people and far better managers.
This situation will change many of us for good. Whats important is to influence all of us for our best.

Maxim Behar: When you lose, dont lose the lessons
COVID - 19 brought Bulgaria close to a pandemic breakout. What is important now is the reaction of every single person, as well as the decisions that business leaders have to make. These and other topics were discussed by PR expert Maxim Behar in his last interview on BGONAIR TV. " Whatever measures are taken and no matter how doctors proceed, if there isnt good communication, if professionals who are prepared for adequate crisis response in such cases are not used, the messages can become misleading. So it happened the state declared an emergency because of the Coronavirus and the stands in the supermarkets soon were empty ", he said emphasizing the importance of the government forming a group of communication experts.
On the question of how this pandemic will affect the business, the PR expert said that right now PR agencies have a unique chance to show their professionalism in crises. Surely tourism and the airline business will change completely, travel will be drastically reduced, but at the same time, we will realize that it is not so bad to stay at home. Now that we can't go to the movies, theaters, and bars, we have to spend some time with our loved ones, and why not enjoy some good, interesting reading.
In 2019, the newly published book - The World PR Revolution - has become an absolute bestseller. For two weeks, it has been the number one book on Amazons category for PR, Sales & Marketing and Career Advises and continues to be one of the best-selling new books in the field.
Facing nowadays situation, this guide is particularly suitable and appropriate.
" When you lose, dont lose the lessons " said Mr. Behar, quoting the great Dalai Lama.

Maxim Behar: Branding Will Lead Bulgaria One Step Ahead
Maxim Behar participated in this year's meeting of the National Board of Tourism, commenting on the topic "Bulgaria - an investment destination". Other guest were Minister of Tourism Nikolina Angelkova, Mayor of Sofia Municipality Yordanka Fandakova and more than 150 leaders from the tourism industry, international and local corporations and organizations.
At the meeting Behar had an emotional speech, highlighting some important points for making Bulgaria a tourist destination. He explained the importance of creating a comprehensive strategy to improve the country's image, emphasizing that branding and changing the current logo, as well as coming up with a good, captivating slogan are all important steps towards making Bulgaria an attractive tourist destination.
"These are the main challenges for Bulgaria at that point - better presentation of the country to the world, adaptation of the administrative and political system and creation of a much, much greater business environment. Attracting more investment will not only lead to more opportunities for work but also to better international experience and market climate in the country."

Maxim Behar: Facebook is At The Heart of The Revolution That Has Affected and Changed The PR Business
Few days after the Bulgarian premiere of his book The World PR Revolution, Maxim Behar spoke for the online newspaper Economic Life, commenting on the PR changes, the revolution in communications and stereotypes that spread among public.
Commenting on the Revolution in Social Media, Maxim predicts the next level in which the artificial intellect will be integrated and involved in PR activities and the PR experts will increasingly rely on it. On the other hand, creativity and endless imagination come from man and creative thinking would hardly be replaced by robots: we need to rely onour ownintelligence and motivation for proactive strategies. However, Maximwont be surprised if the best-selling paintings are made by robots.
With the development of social media, the management of different businesses has undergone a radical change. For sure, Facebook is at the heart of the Revolution, affecting and changing the PR business, as well as fake news, fake profiles and hacking attacks thatare the new dangers to the PR business. However, Behar mentions that the benefits are endless and we should concentrate on them: There are risks everywhere, but we need to know how to deal with them and the faster we learn, the more experienced we become in business, and in life. This is especially true of social media, which development we are yet to see. Let's not forget that even the worst decision is better than no decision. - quoting one of the most important rules in business which he describes in detail in his book 111 Rules on Facebook

Exclusive Presentation of "The Global PR Revolution" in front of the Council of Women in Business
Maxim Behar's latest book "The Global PR Revolution" was presented to the Council of Women in Business at the UniCredit Bulbank International Center. The book is having a huge success and has been designated the 2020 PR Bible.
The Global PR Revolution: How Thought Leaders Succeed in the Transformed World of PR provoked strong interest among guests and sparked a heated discussion about trends in the PR business, the role of social media and the future of business. The event was visited by dozens of managers of large companies, representatives of the diplomatic corps and friends of the author.
"The PR business has changed significantly in recent years. One of the main reasons for this is the development of social networks. Today, anyone can have media in their hands and create content that reaches millions of people. It is a real revolution that offers many opportunities but also challenges", Maxim Behar told the audience.
