Old men policing the bodies of young women,
old men judging life by their rules.  

Men in suits screaming about the evils of homosexuality,
men in suits forgetting their vows as adultery
is reflected back in the mirror shine of wedding rings,
taken off and abandoned on nightstands in hotel rooms
that charge by the hour.  

Armed men aiming guns at unarmed boys,
Armed men and the sound of boots walking over
bullet shells, silence where apology should be.

Powerful men shouting for walls to hang our flag upon,
Stars and Stripes on concrete and razor wire,
Powerful men locking children in cages,
splitting families and building camps to hide away the evidence
that history has seen this before,
red white and black in place of red white and blue.

Angry men yelling that all lives matter, missing the point
that theirs always have, that others aren’t so lucky,
angry men infusing themselves into situations
where they stop feeling most important, even for
a breath.  

Strong men and women fighting back, compassion as a guide,
refusing to back down against the tide of aggression
and intolerance, lifting voices in opposition
to the emboldened and ignorant, once silent, now roaring.
Strong men and women writing words of equality, of tolerance,
of peace, arm in arm like a dam against the flood waters,
defiant against the hatred.

All that will tell the story, the passage
of time and its trappings,
the talismans that soak us up
and absorb the minutes that we lose,
those we hand over freely.  
On some table top glasses, yours
next to mine, distance blurs as these eyes
age, while your hands hold your novels
further and further away.  

Each piece that accompanies us
sponges more,
the hours spent sleepless,
the days apart
