Typewriter Series #2697 by Tyler Knott Gregson
A chipmunk, a pine siskin,
and a bumblebee
together in my bird feeder,
inches apart, none of them
bothered at all.
A ground squirrel joins them,
another chipmunk
follows, and soon the feeder
is overflowing.
No one is turned away,
though the food is
dwindling,
no one forces the other
out.
Wisdom comes in many forms,
if we’d only learn
to listen.

I miss you two so much it fucking burns my insides up and pushes on my chest like a weight I couldn’t invent. There is not a day I don’t think of you both. I know you’re back here, but dammit you’re too far away. (at Helena, Montana)

Typewriter Series #2696 by Tyler Knott Gregson
Chasers of the light,
we’ve called ourselves
from the beginning,
built a life around this.
Caught some,
from time to time,
borrowed moments to save,
memories frozen in
fading glow, in early morning
fog and late night stardust.
Chasers of the light,
and I stayed a half step
behind you. Maybe it was
light you were chasing,
eyes on the horizon,
watching it shift and fade,
alive and migratory,
but it was on you
my eyes were
locked.
All this time, I’ve
been chasing light,
all this time
I’ve been chasing
you.

You can take every other season, just leave me Autumn. I wait all year for this sliver of perfection.

Typewriter Series #2695 by Tyler Knott Gregson
PLEASE READ THIS ONE!
Maybe we’re too proud of ourselves,
lost in this delusion of grandeur, can’t see
past our own noses, maybe we believe too hard
in our own myths.
Right now, mothers and fathers
are buying bulletproof backpacks
to fill with binders and magic markers, still
scented like simpler times are even a remote
possibility. Keep telling ourselves
we are the greatest country on earth.
Active shooter drills and boredom
trickles across the faces of children
hiding under desks, behind the
barricades they build against doors,
against windows to the hallways.
The boy who cried wolf, over and again,
until one day the wolf actually comes,
bullets biting like teeth, and crying
takes on a new sound. Keep telling ourselves
we are the greatest country on earth.
Martin Luther King Jr. would be 90 this birthday,
if pride and hatred and blind ignorance
didn’t steal him away. What would he think
of where we are? The water fountains
lost their labels, but the divide continues,
flames from burning crosses have moved
from front yards to the stunted hearts of the
hateful, but still they burn. Keep telling ourselves
we are the greatest country on earth.
