Soreness as I age,
aches where
none had visited
before.  

Tourists, I call them,
and hope they’ll leave,
but someone spread
the news of
this place, someone
spoke of it with what must
have been reverence,

for they keep returning.

I am host nation to
a thousand immigrants now,

every morning I wake I hear them,
hands over hearts,
promising they’ll forever
stay.

Morning
and a bird sings.

I watched her,
over an hour
she called out

never once looked
to see who loved
the song,

never stopped
to see if it was
working.

She sang,
hot breath in the
cold air,

then lit off
for somewhere
warm.

Same haircut since it grew,
same shirts since they
started fitting me,
same shoes since we couldn’t
afford name brand,
found the knock-off in
a mall that no longer stands.  

I was this and am it still,
will be it, I know nothing else.

Growth inside, though
skin
still holds it,
I am the expansion of
the universe
held snug in this shell
that stretches.  

Light years now,
from the first light I saw,

galaxies away,
inside, I think

as I button the same button
I have fixed a dozen
times.
