Interview with Jessica Cahill

Thank you to ReadbyRoe for conducting a character interview about Jessica Cahill (heroine), in my new romantic suspense, Cut. All answers are from Jessie's point of view and for more information, check out more at
https://readbyroe.wordpress.com/

1. What is a fact that nobody knows about you? I used to egg my own house. My sister and brother always had to clean up the mess–and I never told them.

2. What is your favorite animal? My favorite animal is a Hippo. They look cute–but man, are they mean.

3. What did you want to be when you grew up? A doctor.

4. Who was your inspiration? My neighbor, a boy who lost use of his legs in a boating accident. We were the same age. We went to the same school. He stayed my friend after I was mean to him, after all my friends turned their backs on me. I grew up because of him. I became someone who stuck up for others and who spoke up.

5. Where is your favorite travel destination?
Anywhere with an ocean and a spa.

6. Where did you grow up? Fresno, CA

7. Do you have any siblings? If so what are they like? I have two older siblings, a brother Mark and my sister, Melanie. Those two were always close. They had a bond I could never compete with. They liked the same television shows, movies, music, hobbies. They both wanted to achieve something in life. Their only difference was Mark had a sense of humor and Melanie couldn’t tell a joke to save her life.

8. What is your favorite book genre? I love to read chick lit. I’m so glad that’s a genre, really.

9. Where did the name Jessica come from?
A soap opera my mother used to watch. She said the name sounded dramatic.

10. Do you prefer cats or dogs, or both? I prefer cats. Cats get that it’s about them.

11. What are some of your bad habits? I pick my nails during conversations, and yes, I still roll my eyes long past the acceptable age.

12. What traits do you and Jessica have in common? (for the author) We both fumble with saying the right thing in the moment. We each think about what we should have said. What we could have said during situations. That’s the brilliance of writing, you get to re-write those moments for your characters and they get it right according to their own thoughts and feelings.

13. Why is it so hard to like Jessica? (Emily’s added question) I’d like to address this question because I get feedback on her character. A lot. Jessie is written in a very intentional way. I think in the romance genre many of the female main characters are written inside a neat and pretty box. I grew frustrated reading essentially different stories by different authors, but all writing the same character in one way or another. Readers expect to connect to that girl. They love her niceness, her humility, her ability to be perfect but have annoying perfect quirks. Jessie is not like that and that’s what makes her frustrating in my opinion. It’s what made her scary to write. She’s impulsive, selfish, and caught in the middle of her own bad choices. My goal was to have her collide with Brent, with a character who sees her for who she is, and recognize that she has potential to be something great to herself. The whole point of the diamonds is that they are found as they are (like Jessie) then changed by circumstance (the cut).~
