Musings on Episode 3

welovethebeekeeper:

My intention has always been to speculate on the plot of each episode using information gleaned at setlock. I did that for episode 1. Decided that ep 2 was self explanatory [Sherlock is ill, faces his demons, talks things out with an apparition, evil Smith is evil, some jiggery pokery went on in the 1970′s, John looks BAMF and sexy, they go out on the redo date which is a nice bookend to Angelo’s, and they are hit with news that leads us into ep 3; the darkest, most angst ridden fuckery we have ever experienced] I even tried to make a good guess of ep 3. But I can’t come up with enough awful, sick, horrific, heartbreaking shit from the evidence we have from setlock. In fact ep 3 setlock looked like a holiday, a romantic get away, John looking especially fine, maybe a few sightseeing tours via helicopter, with some flashbacks to childhood and thoughts of pretty little girls in pig tails dancing in fairy circles. [Sherlock’s real MP musings right there folks] So here are the facts I’ve been working with, just to see if anyone can shed some light on how the plot to this episode may go down. [Yes, my mind has just gone there too…please let our men have sex and soon. I admit that I really am here to watch two men fuck, well…..among other things]

Facts we have from setlock 4:3.

Coastal locations

A fort
Goons/private security force/mercenaries with guns, running through the fort, around the exterior of the fort
Caves - both natural, under the fort, and one built in the studio
A beach
A helicopter - Benedict filmed sitting in it, Andrew filmed outside it with body guards
A meeting on the beach between Moriarty and unnamed man
Fishermen - 2 of which are in several scenes. Another elderly fisherman on beach with John and they are frogmarched away.
A boat. Either in the mist or on fire. John and Sherlock on board. John with gun. Sherlock jumps from roof of cabin to the deck
A derelict and isolated manor farm house
Young Sherlock and young Mycroft
Mr Holmes
Sherlock at a castle with a 3-4 year old blonde girl
House near beach with interior filming, primarily with Benedict but maybe also Loo
There is an emotional scene between Sherlock and Mycroft
Eos on set and therefore violin

Taking out the conjecture and the hints via tweets from cast and crew, if we look at the evidence, what does it tell us?

The Fort: as seen in the trailer, it looks more like a garrison than a home, the private army are in residence, armed and vigilant. The fort is on an island, so good visibility and defence position. There are caves under the island. There is a scene/scenes that were important enough to build the cave interior in the studio. A helicopter cannot land on the fort/island. It would have to land on the near by beach. No principle actors were noted at the fort location. Two supporting actors, the fishermen were reported in scenes at the fort.

The Beach: a helicopter was filmed taking off and landing. Both Sherlock and Moriarty were seen in or near the helicopter being filmed. A meeting takes place between Moriarty and an unknown man. John and an elderly fisherman are captured, they put their hands up and are taken away.

The Boat: Sherlock, John and the two fishermen are on the boat. John pulls his gun on the fishermen. Sherlock jumps down off the cabin roof onto the deck. There is either an engine fire resulting in smoke or a very heavy fog.

The house in Ogmore: Interiors were shot. From the estate agent’s website we could see the room that was filmed; a kitchen/family room at the back of the house. Modern, well appointed. Setlockers reported Benedict and Loo were there.

The Castle: Sherlock with a small blonde girl dancing circles around him.

The isolated manor farm: Benedict and Martin filming. Kept private.

Eos/Violin: Eos was only present for 4:3, so the violin makes it’s appearance in 4:3. Precedence dictates that Sherlock’s deepest emotions are vented via his music. We know that the series has some effect on how Mrs Hudson regards Mycroft, can presume her anger is on behalf of Sherlock? The violin is used in connection with Sherlock’s emotions towards Mycroft [TGG, ASiB] and John [ASiB, TSOT] In TRF Moriarty names the three people Sherlock is closet to in the world; John, Mrs H and Lestrade, however we can argue that the list would also include Mycroft. 4 people, 4 strings. One broken.

Young actors: Again keeping in with the theme of a breakdown or severance of the relationship between Mycroft and Sherlock, a flashback to childhood events could be used as background information. Tim Carlton is in this episode but he would be too old to play the younger Mr Holmes, to match the age of the child actors playing his sons. [Could Benedict play his father as a younger man?] With the clue given to us being the name of Sherrinford we are led to consider another brother [Baring Gould speculation] Sherlock’s alternative persona [Doyle’s original name for the character] or a huge fix and the writers have their own idea of who or what Sherrinford is.

To be honest I saw more evidence for The Three Thatchers and The Lying Detective to be dark and heartbreaking, so there MUST be huge amounts of plot not evident for episode 3. Which leads me to conclude that their security and privacy measures worked very well for the final episode. Input welcome.

Magic & Mystery - Halloween 2016

(Not-too-spooky Johnlock tales)

********

Lightning and Sea Glass by 221b_careful_what_you_wish_for, 18
k, explicit.  The mad Professor Moriarty
and his reluctant assistant John Watson have reanimated the dead – and the
results are beautiful. At least John thinks so. When Moriarty rejects his
creation, John disappears with the creature to protect it, sealing their fates
together.  (Loosely inspired by Mary
Shelley’s Frankenstein)

Once Upon a Beast Becoming by antietamfalls, 24 k words. Teen. Magical AU. Reworking of “Beauty and the
Beast.”  An act of pride, a druid’s
curse, an enchanted leaf; Sherlock’s torment has lasted an age. Hope arrives in
the form of one John Watson, a man uniquely suited to break the spell. But with
a single night to win his affections, Sherlock finds his carefully laid plans
disrupted by a monstrous killer whose sights are set on the only thing he has
left to lose: John.

The Straw Man Fallacy by
Vulgarweed, 40 k, explicit. Crossover with “The WickerMan” movie. Just
wonderful! Sherlock and John have been lured to solve the mystery of the
disappeared police officer on SummerIsle. It turns out that they are the new
sacrifice! Ritual public sex – John in antlers and a kilt, Sherlock in a flower
wreathe and white robe. Oh GODS YES!

Skeletons by
flawedamythyst, 57 k, teen.  Sherlock is
an odd flatmate, but John wouldn’t trade him for anyone. Gradually they become
more than just flatmates sliding into a relationship of sorts though Sherlock’s
past remains a mystery and his aversion to celebrating any holidays at the flat
remain strange. Fusion with a well-known movie, very Halloween in flavor.

I used to live alone before I knew you by etothepii, Good Omens/Sherlock fusion. 11 k, teen. The one
where Mycroft is an angel, Sherlock is a demon, and John is still John.

The Boy Who Drank Stars by kinklock, 36 k, explicit.  A gorgeous fairy tale of a fic fusion with
“Howl’s Moving Castle.” The author drew from both the story and the movie to
make this amazing magical tale of the mysterious Wizard Howl, and wounded
veteran John Watson who stumbles upon him. Magicial, sweet, mysterious – this
is an all-around winner!

Well, That Bites by mydwynter, 1.9 k, mature. Vamplock is out dancing, just
oozing across the club, and Moriarty is furious that it isn’t with him. Great
little magical creatures AU in a gay bar. What more could you want?

The Stars Move Still by beautifulfiction, 96 k, explicit. Sherlock is a powerful mage, and though
John is skilled as a healer, he’s an average mage at best. Together though,
they can combine their energies to create something simply amazing. Morarity is
a demon they must defeat to save all, and the sprites in this story are
adorable!

The Detective and the Demon
by oreganotea, 2 k, gen.
“Every demon on record is described as either monstrously terrifying or
breathtakingly beautiful,” Sherlock says. “I have never heard of a demon with a
forgettable face and a propensity for ugly jumpers.”

A Soldier’s Instinct by bees_stories, 1 k, teen. Every soldier
has a survival instinct; that voice in his head or his gut that tells him when
a situation isn’t quite right and that he should tread with care. But on a
London street, John experiences something much more profound.

John Watson’s Moon by
patternofdefiance, 11 k, explicit. John was turned into a werewolf while
fighting in Afghanistan. He returns to London unable to find an acceptable
place in society. He moves in with Sherlock and even though John is feeling
happier than he has in a while, he is still not fully comfortable having his
wolf around Sherlock.

Sic Gorgiamos Allos
Subjectatos Nunc
,  by etothepii (Sherlock/The Addams Family) 5
k, teen. “Sic gorgiamus allos subjectatos nunc. It’s the family motto.”
“What does it mean?” “We gladly feast on those who would subdue us.” Wonderful
backstory on John and his unusual family.  (1st in series)

The Case of the Two Apparitions by trickybonmot, 3 k, mature.
In an effort to alleviate the stress of John’s family life, Sherlock takes him
along to investigate the (probably) fictitious haunting of an old country
house. However, the mystery turns out to be deeper than Sherlock could have
guessed, as some paranormal events are not so easily explained after all. Angst,
dubcon.

Man and Beast by Jupiter_Ash, 19 k, explicit. AU. Sherlock is a
werewolf being held and experimented on in some secret lab. When they toss a
prisoner in with him at full moon, unexpected things happen. Sherlock finds his
mate in John Watson.

Stranger at the Gate
by bendingsignposts,
85
k, explicit. Sherlock is a vampire, but he must convince John, a guard at the
gate, that he is human to gain entry to the village. Sherlock comes to care for
this brave little guard, and worries that John will not like the truth when he
finds it. Angsty, violent, dubcon, hot.

The
Contract
by twistedthicket1, 10 k, explicit. On the eve of the day
in which the divide between the spirit world and the Earth becomes thinnest,
Captain John Watson is intent on making sure that no Demons will make it past
the gate. The village of Baker is heavily fortified, a veritable fortress
against the evils that are scheduled to arrive. On the other side of the world,
Sherlock is an incubus with a problem. He has no sexual desire.

Hellfire by testosterone_tea, 28 K, explicit. Sherlock
is a Mage that gets involved with a case involving Dark Summoning rituals,
leading him to John Watson, a man with Berserker blood. The only thing is,
Berserkers have been extinct for centuries. And of course, nothing involving
Mycroft and his interfering ways is ever simple. This time, even Sherlock may
have bitten off more than he can handle.

the shape of the shadows that
detach from the walls
by wendlaa,
13 k, explicit. John and Sherlock never met so Sherlock ends up as one of the
serial suicide victims. This is not the end however as Sherlock becomes a ghost
who meets John later. Eventually a relationship develops. Lots of feelings and
angst, but a happy ending.

Johnloctober by
prettysailorsoldier, 169 k, explicit.  31
chapters – a series of prompts one for each day of October. Very cute stuff!

Beautiful Words - Benedict on Sherlock (via Doctor Strange)

melancolia:

ebaeschnbliah:

gosherlocked:

So this is what Benedict said in a Berlin interview X when asked about similarities between Sherlock and Doctor Strange. Which is quite telling because Sherlock must be the exact opposite of what Benedict has to say about Stephen Strange (special thanks to @ebaeschnbliah for pointing this out):

“I didn’t find it too similar. This guy is a New York bred and born superhero. And he is a neurosurgeon who while, like you say, arrogant and smart, is also somebody who’s very trapped by the material success of his profession. (…) He drives fast cars and has fast relationships and yet it’s all very hollow. He lives in a beautiful apartment with a stunning view but no one to share it with. He drives a rather beautiful and very fast car (…) but there is no one in the passenger seat (…). But he’s alone. What he becomes at the end is someone who chooses that aloneness in order to do what he has realised is his calling, to become a sorcerer. Yes, I think there are huge amounts of differences.”

So according to Benedict Sherlock is:

not interested in material success

does not have a (fast) car
does not have fast relationships
his life is not hollow
he has (when driving) someone in the passenger seat
he is not alone
he does not choose being alone

We all know who he shares his flat with. We all know who sat in his passenger seat the one time we saw him drive a car. We all know Sherlock never chose to be alone, he felt forced to do so by Moriarty. I think Benedict has managed to give a beautiful characterisation of Sherlock even while talking about a completely different character.

THIS … is utterly lovely @gosherlocked !  Thank you for pointing out these very important facts so clearly.   :)))

I think of all the accusations that the actors don’t analyse their characters is absurd. We all know that the actors of Sherlock BBC ask questions, enjoy the read-throughs because they can get to see beyond the scenes (the impact, the implications when they start to act on them), and choose not to impart them solely for the benefit of protecting their narrative. This is quite clear that Cumberbatch (like MF and the others) truly comprehend their roles and why they decide to portray these characters on the screen.

Interesting. The difference between Dr. Strange and Sherlock is that the doctor is alone … chooses to be alone … no one in his beautiful appartement, no one in the passenger seat of his beautiful car.  And Sherlock ….. well …..

Consider me grinning from ear to ear.  :)))))

I was wondering why they chose a violin to promote the first episode of S4, as it will be called “The Six Thatchers”.

Turns out there’s a luthier in New Zealand, Greame Thatcher, who builts, among other handcrafted string instruments, a violin model called “Thatcher”:

This is not the violin from the promo pic, as this one has 4 fine tuners - but could The Six Thatchers be a reference to six violins nonetheless?

Wow, this is an interesting catch.

@isitandwonder: Could there be six violins and in one of them is hidden something? Maybe this is not Sherlock’s violin after all. Do we know what sort of instrument he plays? (Strangely enough, Sherlockology does not have it among the props). In Canon he plays a Stradivarius.

If something is hidden inside, it must be something that does not impair the sound, a piece of paper maybe. Because what makes me think is that they give us the violin for the first episode whereas a broken string seems to be more in accordance with ep. 2. So maybe this is not just about Sherlock but also about a “real” case.

Some other thoughts on why this would be a clever move:

It would be a new variation on The Six Napoleons and The Six Thatchers from the blog.

People expect this to be Sherlock’s violin in ep. 1 but it turns out to be part of a case.
And then we get the big “Sherlock with broken strings” in ep. 2.
And there is another association with strings - being a puppet on a string, being used by some puppetmaster or at least someone trying this on Sherlock. Smith? Mycroft? Moriarty? Someone from the past?

That’s a really good catch! And I love your add to it @gosherlocked I myself thought it could be someone using Sherlock as a puppet; possibly Mycroft, seeing how Mrs. Hudson gets onto him about something.

@inevitably-johnlocked

I love all of this very much! I’m honestly 99% certain now that this is what it’s going to be about. And perhaps a client or Mycroft knows that Sherlock is fond of violins and it’s why he is on the case, and somehow it eventually ties into the Culverton Conundrum and The Mary Problem.

I love the idea.  But New Zealand isn’t really known for his violins, is it? So I’d say this is too far fetched. They could still invent a violin maker from 19th century who and whose instruments are called Thatcher.

Thatcher is certainly not Stradivarius @miadifferent. And I’ve no idea if Thatcher violins are something special. They are not overtly cheap, I’d say, if that’s anything to go by - but nor really expensive either.

In BBC Sherlock John has been to New Zealand with one of his girlfriends to visit an old friend. Perhaps that could be some connection?

And Thatcher (the luthier) worked with violin makers in England…

So, who knows?

Hi lovely. Do you know of any fics where John and Sherlock go undercover as a couple? Especially undercover in gay spaces?

image

Hey nonny, why yes I DO know of some Johnlock fake relationship for a case fics. I hope these will do! :)

Fake Relationship for a Case Fics

The Norwood
Love Builders
by flawedamythyst, 47k, teen. Sherlock and John go undercover to
solve the murder of Joanna Oldacre, but things are complicated by the many
feelings John has been repressing in the wake of Sherlock’s faked death and
return.

Rainbow Hearts Retreat
by PajamaSecrets, 11k,
explicit. “It’s a same-sex couples retreat. For those
experiencing troubles in their relationship. Consists of group and couples
therapy as well as encouraging socialization between the couples. It’s all in
their incredibly dull brochure.”

Yours
by lookupkate, explicit, 3 k. John and Sherlock go to a gay club for a case.
John gets hit on and Sherlock gets jealous. Gay sex ensues. Hot Toplock.

The
Night Train
by PlainJane, 7 k, explicit.  This is another wonderful pretend
relationship for a case – all wrapped up with an alternate first meeting.
Sherlock runs into John boarding a night train in Paddington station as he
needs to get away from some following goons, and throws himself into John’s
arms shouting “Darling.”  Loved it!

Down with
this Ship
by FrostedFlame (PinkOrchid), 10 k, mature. Sherlock
takes John dancing at a gay bar … for a case, supposedly. He expects John
to be embarrassed by the outing, but Sherlock has never been so wrong about
something. Bi-John in full club gear is a sight to behold!

A Reckoning by Purdu, WIP, explicit.
This fic takes being “pretend boyfriends for a case” to new highs. Set post series
3, the story finds John joining Sherlock in his dangerous six month mission in
Eastern Europe. John becomes a BAMF secret spy, while Sherlock plays the
undercover nerdy scientist. Slow burn, bed sharing, British men being British,
wrapped up with action-movie style case fic and sexy sexiness – wows!!!

The
Newlywed Game: Johnlock Edition
by patternofdefiance, 9 k,
explicit. Utterly adorable bit of fluff. John and Sherlock go on a Newlywed
Game show for a case so Sherlock can study the host. The questions are
adorable, the sex scene after is sweetness personified. Well written, and very
cute.

A Silver Sixpence by
doodle, 16 k, explicit. John and Sherlock have to get married for a case. A
sham become the real. Romance, sex, violence. Goofy and soooo sweet.  Fav.

Wars we fought, things we’re not by
blueink3, 55 k, mature. This is another fake relationship for a case, but this
time John and Sherlock are playing parents with a foster-child baby that
Mycroft has thrust upon them. Playing a gay family on holiday, they spend time
at a seaside town where several gay couples and their children have gone
missing. Oh so sweet, and Connor the toddler is a big thumbs up!
