Ben and Martin's Friendship?
No one else is talkingabout this, and there’s probably a good reason for that, but it’s bugging me,
so I’m going to post about it. Maybe people know more about this than I do and
can enlighten me.
Over the years of being a Sherlock fan, I’ve enjoyed the little
behind the scenes glimpses we’ve gotten of Ben and Martin’s friendship. Them
goofing around on the red carpet, cracking each other up on set, the photos of
Ben holding Martin’s kids in S1 setlock (or perhaps S2), the bts footage from
The Hobbit that showed Ben sneaking up on Martin, excited to see him….
It was just nice to know they had good chemistry and liked one another IRL.
But lately, that’s changed. The points:
1. There’s
this video of Martin from Dec 2014. When a reporter says she thinks Benedict
should make an appearance on SNL with him, Martin says “I think Benedict can go
fuck himself” (x).
Yes, I know Martin can be a foul-mouthed little smart ass (and I love that
about him), and often just takes the piss. But on this video really seemed to
have genuine antipathy behind his statment. I hope I’m wrong.
2. There was no
trace of Sherock in Martin’s SNL appearance. (And yes, I’ve read the meta about
the sax player scene, but if that was related to Sherlock is was way, way
obscure and not something that casual viewers would get.)
3. There
were no pics of them really interacting from the Christmas Special setlock,
The images of them in the ‘fake 221B’ set showed Martin and Amanda
cuddling and not looking particularly happy and Ben on the opposite side of the
set not interacting with them. On past setlocks there were always pics of them interacting.
4. There
were no pics of them interacting at all at the recent BAFTAs. Again, in past years there were.
5. When
some news sources reported that Martin was best man at Benedict’s wedding on
Valentine’s Day, The Australian reported this:
“Yet the reports
caused hilarity at the Freeman home in Hertfordshire, where the actor’s
partner, Amanda Abbington, tweeted a picture of a newspaper report that she
called “bowel-shatteringly, mind-numbingly wrong … how we laughed and laughed”
She later deleted the tweet but left
other messages suggesting that Freeman and his co-star are professional
partners, not best buddies.(x). Now, assuming Amada did indeed tweet this,
this is both wildly inappropriate and very mean-spirited (not the first time,
Amanda). It would imply that not only wasn’t Martin the best man, but he is, in
fact, quite the opposite, that they can’t stand one another. Why else would it be “mind-numbingly wrong”
and make them “laugh and laugh”? And the very idea of her “laughing” at Ben’s wedding
is just… Gah. Mean Girls much? Ugg.
7. Though
most reports say Martin “was there” at the wedding according to “a source” (as a regular
guest), no pictures of him there have surfaced, despite pap shots of nearly
everyone else one could expect to be there surfacing. And clearly Amanda wasn’t
there if she was free to be tweeting such things on the day of.
8. Now,
there are plenty of reasons why Martin wouldn’t be at the wedding, given his busy
career. Supposedly he is filming in New Mexico with Tina Fey currently (x). But
Amanda’s nasty tweet implies it wasn’t just a scheduling conflict that had Martin in
absentia, but it was something more personal.
So
what’s it boil down to? This is all
circumstantial and I hope there’s nothing to it. But given that there have now been 3 chances for Martin and Ben to be shown together (setlock, Bafta, and the wedding), and they weren’t, it appears there really is a rift.
No, it’s not necessary for
Ben and Martin to be friends IRL in order for the show to go on and for their
performances to be excellent. But THEY WERE friends until recently. If they are now
seriously on the “outs”, that may affect Sherlock (the show) eventually. After
all, they both have plenty of other projects they can work on if being on set
is not fun. And yes, I do think there’s some bleed over of personal chemistry
that can’t help but occur between actors.
Mostly,
it makes me sad to think of them now disliking each other, because they
seemed to have so much fun together in the past. And that the falling out
happened after Mary/Amanda appeared in the picture? How ironic if RL mirrored fiction.
Best not to speculate on
that I suppose, since I have no facts on the cause of a rift, if there genuinely is one. Let’s just say Amanda’s nasty little tweet did nothing to elevate her from my least favorite character on the show.
