Eating My Words

[image error]“What’s for breakfast?” my son asks. He’s visiting from California thanks to a Boston business trip.

Malevolent . Ensorcell. Palatable.

Sean watches me pour the words into my cereal bowl. “Are you adding milk to that?” he wonders out loud.

“I like my words dry,” I respond.

My sophisticated adult son sits down with a thud. The look in his gray-green eyes changes from amusement to concern in seconds.

“Mom, is everything okay?”

I pour two more words into my bowl, because I’ve never heard him...

What a Nerd!

From If I Ran The Zoo, © 1950, Dr. Seuss

As he drones on and on about the meteorological reasons the clouds are forming heavy and dark above our heads, I smile secretly.

In high school, the nerdy boys – the ones who wore thick glasses and crewcuts and got all A’s in science, math, and astronomy – congregated around me.

I was horrified.

I got A’s in English, Drama, and Latin. I didn’t want to hear about their rocket science and fog dissections. But Robert, Nerd #1, took me to the Sophomore Sno...

#ShareAReviewDay – The Right Wrong Man by Pamela S. Wight

I’m still on a “head-heal” as I recover from a concussion, but I was a guest author last Tuesday on The Write Stuff, in which author/blogger Marcia Meara highlights a wonderful review by Annika Perry of my novel The Right Wrong Man. Hope you hop over and see what she has to say!

The Write Stuff

This afternoon, our guest is Pam Wight, who is sharing a lovely review of her novel The Right Wrong Man. I’m sure you’re going to enjoy reading this one, and thanks so much for sharing it throughout y...

How Do YOU Do Nothing?

[image error]What do you do when you’re told to do nothing?

That’s been my dilemma this past week after a distracted driver (ie, texting) plowed into me and my guy as we headed to Delaware to visit my mom.

We never made it. Damage to car and persons was better than expected, except I got a concussion.

I won’t go into the discomfort and the fear as my body showed me in many ways that I had to stop, which I didn’t do until I finally visited my doctor, who set forth a five-day-rule:

NO computer NO phone. NO...

The Finalist

[image error]A long long time ago, in a land now distant and far removed, girls vied to be finalists in their communities.

Finalists in what, you ask?

According to long ago records recently unearthed, these young women fought for recognition by standing in front of large crowds in long fancy dresses. They paraded up and down in front of an audience of their peers …. and their peers’ parents … competing in poise, talent, and who wore their smiles the best.[image error]

I knew one of these girls. She disliked the contes...

The Invisibility Cap

Cap of Invisibility.

Dr. Rufus promised me that the invisibility cap works for two hours before needing to be re-charged.

Of course, charging the cap is not an easy feat. Just as the professor taught me, I begin with 22 chants, then spread a special lavender-speckled shawl over it, then enact a strange spirit dance for 33 steps.

The first time I used the I.C. – Rufus’ nickname for the invisible cap – it worked wonders. I snuck into the professor’s class on “Mysticism and Magic” and tickled Jo...

Here and Where

[image error]The music takes me away from my writing chair here and brings me to where. Any where I want to go. On this morning, I’d like to go back to the weekend, where my son-in-law sets an individual lava cake ramekin in front of me, proud of his accomplishment, beaming in my praise.

Sons-in-law have it tough, I muse now as a chilly May breeze blows through my window, bird song following with twirling high notes of friendly greetings.

I lean back in my oak chair, my rear aided by a turquoise pillow a...

Mother’s Day Cheese – Grilled

[image error] “Sit down and don’t move.”

This is the first time in my life I can order my mom around, and she has to listen!

She sits on the couch, back against the long floral armrest, head against an added pillow, legs straight in front of her on the rest of the couch, more pillows raising her feet.

“But,” she protests, “I know where the butter is, and the pan to grill the bread. Don’t use the new tomatoes, use the ones in the vegetable bin, and I’m not sure if the cheddar cheese is on the left side of...

Between the Lines

[image error]What’s a fun way to learn about individuals? Perhaps by asking them to list the books they’ve read. Or, even better, to read the books they’ve written. Even though we authors may revel in our fiction (allowing our characters to act in ways we’d never dare), still, there are ways to delve into the likes and dislikes of someone by reading between the lines.

Here’s an example through my innocuous flash fiction, below, based on a set of questions I was asked when nominated last week for the Real...
