18 Months of Liquid Cool: What I Learned

I started my published author career with the After Eden Series and then added The Sleepy Hollow Horrors series two years later. It was the end of 2014 when I mapped out what my next series would be. I had planned four of them, one of which was the Liquid Cool series. So far it has been overwhelmingly the most successful of the three. But, that is completely understandable—action-packed, flying cars, a sci-fi “film-noirish” world, a cool private eye with a fedora, guns and humor, cyborgs and wacky characters. Well, of course: the debut was #1 on Amazon for almost a month, and as of this post, it remains in the top 5 in two categories (sci-fi/cyberpunk and mystery/private investigators), 70% of the reviews are 5-stars, 25% are 4-stars. So it is fair to say readers love it. But that's just the start.

I’m not done with Liquid Cool by a long shot—I already know what the next two books will be. But now I move to one of those other three series to write and release (you, my readers, picked which one), I have to ask: What have I learned?

I knew I had something special with this series genre blend: Sci-fi + Detective Story. Adding in the laughs and the Blade Runner-ish world elevated it even more. However, the single smartest thing I did last year writing-wise was sit down and write a bunch of books in that series. That’s it!  People loved the first book, but they wanted more. The fact that I could deliver that “more” made all the difference. For those that have followed my writing career, I have no issue with writing—15 books in 4 years. “Writer’s Block” is an entity I have never met in my life. Last year, as part of the National Writers Month in November I decided to finish my second Liquid Cool novel, Blade Gunner (I was getting distracted with other book projects—bad, bad, bad). This one month, writers all around the world collectively write for 30 days to finish their book project. Well, I finished Blade Gunner in two weeks. What did I do then? I wrote book three, NeuroDancer. Then, I didn’t stop—I wrote book four, The Electric Sheep Massacre, into the first two weeks of December. I was about to write Book 5, but stopped myself. I didn't want to give my editors a heart attack. So I exited the Liquid Cool world for a bit, thought it’s a really enjoyable place to live in.

As with any independent author-publisher, your writing hat comes off and your business hat goes on. I had three novels to get ready for release. Not that easy, but with a team of editors, proofreaders, and advance readers we got it done. Again, the smartest thing I’ve done in my newbie publishing career was writing those Liquid Cool novels back-to-back. Readers love the first book; they get the rest of them (or the Box Set).

As a writer, I couldn’t be happier. Fans of the series are getting what they want—to follow the cases and antics of Cruz, the private eye. Now don’t hate me but I did tease Book 5 at the end of The Electric Sheep Massacre. I do need to decide fairly soon if I will release that one at the end of the year, maybe in time for the movie release of Blade Runner 2049. I need to think about it. What’s the hesitation? You can see the clue on the main website. I’m releasing another series, but based on the experience and the success of the Liquid Cool novels, I will be following the same model. I’ll be releasing 3 novels of my new fantasy series at once. More on that in another blog post.

For now, it’s all things Liquid Cool. It’s been a fast 18-month roller-coaster ride. I loved writing the novels as much as readers are enjoying them. And a shout out to my great book cover designer Whendell!

Liquid Cool Book Four: The Electric Sheep Massacre is Here!

Talk about a Liquid Cool New Release Explosion!

I loved Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. The movie Blade Runner is loosely based on the story, but they are both great works in their own separate mediums. My book is not derivative of the PKD classic, but I had to get the term “electric sheep” in the title of a sci-fi novel, so it might as well be my Liquid Cool series—The Electric Sheep Massacre. But don’t worry it’s in virtual reality so no real blood and guts—well, we do have some rather gruesome real deaths when they re-enter the real world. But are the electric sheep being massacred, or doing the massacring? That’s what you have to read to find out.

There are two unique aspects of this Liquid Cool novel. First, it is very much like a travelogue. Our hero detective, Cruz, isn’t just in Metropolis in this case. He goes to many places including London Prime—the city of London in the future—yes, cool! He visits “Atlantis” and the novel opens with a “trip” to the Hinterlands. “Is that a tiger?” Yeah, that’s what a character asks in the chapter. I'll let you find out the context.

What is the other unique thing about this novel?

Cruz has dealt with all kinds of villains, but this time he deals with one who is just plain weird. The man may be funny-looking, but he is also deadly dangerous. Worse is that Cruz doesn’t even know why the nemesis is after him. Yes, you meet the blond-wigged man named Ichi Jumper!

“Who is this crazy maniac after me?” Cruz asks. “And I don’t even know why!”

Cruz has a lot of craziness in his life and it doesn’t all have to do with clients and criminals. Aside from his parents-in-law, which he finds all kinds of “pet names” for, he gets the news from his wife—they have a kid on the way. So it’s not all bad.

P.S. Don’t blink because the last line in The Electric Sheep Massacre drops a clue to the next exciting Liquid Cool novel. But you have plenty to enjoy until then. Here are the current Liquid Cool novels—the cyberpunk detective series in a high-tech, low-life world.

These Mean Streets Darkly (The Prequel Short)

Liquid Cool (Book 1)

Blade Gunner (Book 2)

NeuroDancer (Book 3)

The Liquid Cool Box Set (Prequel  + Books 1-3)

The Electric Sheep Massacre (Book 4)

P.P.S. Okay, I added another chapter or epilogue (which is actually the prologue) in The Electric Sheep Massacre. I couldn't help myself–it’s teasing Book 5.

Book News! Liquid Cool Two Book Release Explosion!

Austin Dragon Releases Two New Liquid Cool Novels On March 31st To Readers Worldwide

Austin Dragon, author of the sci-fi/cyberpunk detective Liquid Cool Series, and Well-Tailored Books celebrate the official launch of the second and third books entitled, Blade Gunner and NeuroDancer! The books join its debut novel “Liquid Cool” and prequel, “These Mean Streets, Darkly” to delight readers and fans worldwide.

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 31, 2017) − Author Austin Dragon and Well-Tailored Books announce the official launch of Blade Gunner (Liquid Cool, Book 2) and NeuroDancer (Liquid Cool, Book 3). The books are the highly-anticipated addition to the series that reimagines the cyberpunk genre with an ever-rainy world of colossal skyscrapers, ever-present hovercars flying high above, the grimy, flashy streets of this “neon jungle” below. The Liquid Cool Series is the sci-fi classic, Blade Runner meets the Old Hollywood classic, Maltese Falcon. There is plenty of gritty action, suspense, thrills, and even a few laughs. In this fifty-million-plus supercity of Metropolis, uber-governments and megacorporations fight for control, but so does crime.

In BLADE GUNNER, when two forces of evil want to kill each other—get the hell out of the way! Sinister secret megacorporations. Savage Cyborg cults. And who is Blade Gunner? How does Cruz, our private eye (and unlikely hero), solve this case—let alone survive? Off-worlders will do anything to stop the unknown man called Blade Gunner—even to blow up a supercity from space!

The thrills continue in NEURODANCER! Has Cruz met his supervillain match in NeuroDancer? “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful,” she said to him. He should have listened to his instincts when she strolled into his office to hire him. “I knew I wasn’t gonna touch this case with a 10-foot pole. It had danger written all over it, back and front.” But he did take the Case of the NeuroDancer. Is this the private eye story where the bad “guy” rides off into the sunset and the hero lies flat on his back waiting for the meat wagon to fly down in their hoverambulance.

Welcome to the high-tech, low-life world of Liquid Cool! (See the Liquid Cool Series Page here)

Responding to fans, Dragon has released both books 2 and 3 on the same day, with book 4 coming in May! All books in the Liquid Cool series can be purchased HERE on Amazon.com, Kobo, iTunes, and Barnes & Noble booksellers.

Liquid Cool Release Explosion: The Electric Sheep Massacre!

I loved Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. The classic sci-fi movie Blade Runner is loosely based on the story, but they are both great works in their own separate mediums. You can always tell when something has an impact on the culture. In this case, we have all heard of the term “electric sheep.” So that became part of the title of my fourth Liquid Cool novel. The other part is “massacre”—don’t worry it’s in virtual reality so no real blood and guts (though we do have some rather gruesome deaths). But are the electric sheep being massacred, or are they doing the massacring? That’s what you have to read to find out.

There are two unique aspects for this Liquid Cool novel. First, it is very much like a travelogue. Our hero detective, Cruz, isn’t just in Metropolis in this story. He’s goes to many places including London Prime—the city of London in the future. Cool! He also visits Atlantis and the novel opens with a “trip” to the Hinterlands. “Is that a tiger?” Yeah, that’s what a character asks in that chapter.

What is the other unique thing about this novel?

Cruz has dealt with all kinds of villains, but this time he deals with one who is just plain…weird. The man may be funny-looking, but he is also deadly dangerous. Worse, is that Cruz doesn’t know why the nemesis (in a blond wig) is after him.

“Who is this crazy maniac after me?” Cruz asked. “And I don’t even know why!”

Yes, Cruz has a lot of craziness in his life, but it doesn’t all have to do with clients and criminals. Does he ever have issues with his parents-in-law, which he finds all kinds of “pet names” for. In these Liquid Cool novels, he gets married and, soon, has a kid on the way. So it’s not all bad.

Blade Gunner (Liquid Cool Book 2) introduced a group who wanted to create (and impose) an AI controlled society. In Electric Sheep Massacre (Liquid Cool Book 3), we meet another group of idealists who want to create their own utopia on Earth. In both cases, all that ensued was a lot of death and destruction.

Blade Gunner, NeuroDancer, and The Electric Sheep Massacre arrive March 2017!

P.S. Don’t blink because the last line in The Electric Sheep Massacre drops a clue to the next exciting Liquid Cool novel. But you have plenty to enjoy until then. Here are the current Liquid Cool novels—the cyberpunk detective series in a high-tech, low-life world.

Liquid Cool Release Explosion: NeuroDancer!

This month's three-part blog post continues with the scoop on the next Liquid Cool series release of Book Three: NeuroDancer!

I have a confession to make. I have never read the William Gibson novel, Neuromancer, considered to be the classic that launched the sci-fi genre, cyberpunk. I tried to read it twice, but like Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, I couldn’t get into it. I have a simple rule for all authors, whether it’s Stephen King or a debut writer: I give you 50 pages to hook me. If you can’t, I’m gone. I wanted to like Neuromancer, but didn’t even get 30 pages in. I am far too busy, so I can’t be charitable. I usually have a few short blocks of time each year to do my binge-reading, which I try to cram in as many books as possible.

However, if you loved Gibson’s Neuromancer, great! But…my NeuroDancer is not that. It is about….NeuroDancer.

Who is title of the third Liquid Cool novel?

Here’s a paragraph from the novel:

“I had seen many beautiful women in my life. I was marrying one. This one was one of those movie star-model-politician trophy wife-cgi VR game bimbos—a description I would learn was quite prophetic. Later, I would know her by the name that everyone on the planet and beyond called her—NeuroDancer. I should have thrown her out of my office with her faux-British accent right there, but stupidly, I would take her case.”

In previous novels, our hero, Cruz, deals with crime syndicates, Super Cyborgs, sinister secret megacorporations, Blade Gunner, but this time it is who he calls “The Dame.” The world knows her as NeuroDancer. We also learn that she is Cruz’s arch-nemesis villain.

That is a very bold statement to make, because Cruz has faced the meanest, most dangerous villains out there. Can a world-famous dance performer really top them all? That’s for you to find out.

As with all Liquid Cool cases, there’s more–much more.

Also stay tuned for its amazing book cover. So grab your copy in March and find out about NeuroDancer, the plot, ex-gangster boyfriends and…neurosorcery? And yeah, I do think, our hero detective gets shot again.

In the next blog post (3 of 3), I talk about Liquid Cool Book 4–The Electric Sheep Massacre!
