Review: That’s What I’m Talking About

I think this might be my favourite review so far. It covers all the bases — plot, characters, setting, description. It’s always nice when someone likes the novel, but it’s even nicer when they devote so much thought to it. After all, what you’re looking for as an author is to transport people. To absorb them in a different time and place. When a reader has something to say about virtually every aspect of the novel… well, that’s mission accomplished, in my book.

Thanks, guys!

Review: I Smell Sheep

I don’t smell sheep, myself. Goats, yes. Cows, definitely. Occasionally hippos. But so far, Burundi appears to be entirely sheep free.

But I digress.

A new review of DARKWALKER, earning an enthusiastically bleating 5 sheep, can be found here. However, although it isn’t flagged, it should probably contain a SPOILER WARNING. So be wary…

SF Signal Mind Meld

This morning you can find me amongst very good company over at SF Signal, talking about things I learned from my debut publishing experience. I could have gone on for paragraphs about the deeply affecting and surprising and more than a little stressful ride I’ve been on. Instead, I talked about Twitter.

Go figure.

You can check it out here.

Pirates Ahoy!

When you’re a newbie author, you experience a lot of things for the first time. Many of these new experiences are pleasant. Others, not so much. One falling into the latter category was my first Google Alert informing me of a piracy site offering free downloads of DARKWALKER. Since the first one appeared, others have been cropping up like weeds. For people intent on stealing something worth less than ten bucks, there are now at least five sites offering it up.

That made me mad.

Really mad.

For a while, anyway. But then I got to thinking. Odds are, my first novel is not going to earn out for a while. A following doesn’t spring up overnight; it takes time to build. In the early days, readership is at least as important, if not more important, than sales themselves (at least to my way of thinking). More readers mean more chatter — more reviews, blog posts, etc. — which in turn means more readers, the vast majority of whom are actually going to pay for the book (for less, I might add, than a modestly priced glass of wine in a restaurant. Books are one of the few true bargains left in the world.)

From that point of view, maybe I shouldn’t worry too much about pirate sites, at least not for now. Sure, it’s morally wrong. It is, make no mistake, theft. But since I can’t control it, or even put much of a dent in it, perhaps it’s best to look on the positive side, and hope that anyone who feels inclined to pirate something that took me years of hard work to create will at least be bitten by the bug, and buy the next one, or leave a nice review on Amazon or Goodreads, where it might inspire someone else to buy.

A girl can dream, right?

7 Things I’ve Learned So Far

Looking for some unsolicited advice on writing from a newbie author? Of course you are! In which case, you should head on over to Writer’s Digest, where I contribute my thoughts in a recurring column called, “7 Things I’ve Learned So Far”. (I can’t tell you how tempted I was to start with “humility”, but irony is a dangerous tool to wield when people don’t know you.)

I could have gone to fifteen without breaking a sweat, especially if I included not only things I’ve learned (i.e. mistakes I’ve made), but also things I’m trying to learn (i.e. mistakes I’m still making). But another Thing I’ve Learned is to follow editorial guidelines, so seven it is. Enjoy!
