About the Book

He should’ve never left his house. He should’ve stayed at home. He has a legitimate excuse—he’s running a fever and he’s fairly sure he’s developing pneumonia. He should have called in sick…but he doesn’t. He goes to work, because his team is relying on him. First, he has to sign about eight thousand calendars—all from women who purchased said calendars to benefit the Fallen Officer fundraiser. And when he’s done with that, he has to endure a television interview along with the rest of the SWAT team seeing as they made national news with their ‘Hot SWAT’ calendar that’s sold a million copies to women all over the world. Needless to say, when Samuel Adams walks into the pharmacy hours later, he only has one thing on his mind. Ibuprofen. Sadly, he never gets to the Ibuprofen. Mostly because before he gets there, he finds a junkie waving a gun around threatening to kill anybody that moves.  He’s running a fever. That has to be the reason that the girl in the corner begins cursing up a storm and drawing the junkie’s attention. Has to be.

 ***

Stop it, stop it, stop it! She tells herself to take a deep breath. Tells herself that she needs to calm down. Tells herself that if she doesn’t get her act under control, things are going to get ugly. And, of course, that’s when the curse words start flying. The more nervous she gets, the worse her Tourette’s becomes. Which is, of course, why she stands up and gives the man a perfect target. Thank God that the coughing giant in the corner makes the same move and saves her life. And how does she repay him? By calling him every awful word in the dictionary. Thank you, Tourette’s.

I have loved this series and that speaks loudly in and of itself. I am enjoying all the characters and the overlapping of series that we've gotten to see. I think that this has been one of LLV's best yet.

Review: Wild Highway

Wild Highway Wild Highway by Devney Perry
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read the first book in the series and loved it. This book was also just as great. I've needed something to keep my mind off life and this was what I needed. Gemma and Easton were not the easiest couple. In fact, she literally runs in to him on her way back into town and he's kind of a jerk to her. That's not to say that he doesn't have a good reason though. Devney always puts her characters from previous books in her new books, which is what I love about her. She knows how to write hometown romance like nobody's business. This was another 5-star for me!!

Another great book in the Swat 2.0 series by LLV!! This book is about Booth and Dillan and I have to admit that I've wanted this book for a long time because I love the twins dad...it's true, I've secretly always loved him the mostest lol. This storyline should have been complicated but it wasn't because in this case it was each twin loved the other twin and it worked. That's not to say there weren't some hard or hurt feelings. I never give spoilers in any reviews but I do let people know that the book is a one-of-a-kind that will have you wanting to read the next book

Title: By a ThreadAuthor: Lucy ScoreGenre: A Grumpy Boss Romantic ComedyRelease Date: April 23, 2020 Dominic was staring at me like he couldn’t decide whether to chop me into pieces or pull my hair and French kiss me.
DominicI got her fired. Okay, so I’d had a bad day and took it out on a bystander in a pizza shop. But there’s nothing innocent about Ally Morales. She proves that the first day at her new job… in my office… after being hired by my mother. So maybe her colorful, annoying, inexplicably alluring personality brightens up the magazine’s offices that have felt like a prison for the past year. Maybe I like that she argues with me in front of the editorial staff. And maybe my after-hours fantasies are haunted by those brown eyes and that sharp tongue. But that doesn’t mean that I’m going to be the next Russo man to take advantage of his position. I might be a second-generation son of a… fill in the blank, but I am not my father. She’s working herself to death at half a dozen dead-end jobs for some secret reason she doesn’t feel like sharing with me. And I’m going to fix it all. Don’t accuse me of caring. She’s nothing more than a puzzle to be solved. If I can get her to quit, I can finally peel back all those layers. Then I can go back to salvaging the family name and forget all about the dancing, beer-slinging brunette. AllyHa. Hold my beer, Grumpy Grump Face.Author’s Note: A steamy, swoony workplace romantic comedy with a grumpy boss hero determined to save the day and a plucky heroine who is starting to wonder if there might actually be a beating heart beneath her boss’s sexy vests.

This was a really good, funny, and quick read!! I love all of LS books and this was no exception. Dominic and Ally had some chemistry, but Dominic just couldn't catch a break and neither could Ally. I mean, when a hot guy gets you booted - what's a girl to do? Well, I'm not giving anything away but the book is funny to me because she hands him his butt in front of his own staff since he was dumb enough to hire her!!

Excerpt:
He licked his lips and repeated what he always did when we had to perform, when we had to do our jobs. “I won’t be gentle with you.”
Our foreheads touched, my chest heaved with exertion like it was hard to breathe when he was so near, but really it was the promise that killed me, a promise that he wouldn’t enjoy touching me ever again, that I was more curse than cure, and yet, I knew it was all we would ever get, these fleeting moments where we did our job too well. “Then make it hurt, baby.” My voice cracked. “Make it hurt.”
His lips parted in a groan as he spun me into his arms and crushed his mouth to mine. It was part pain, part pleasure as he pulled my hair then slid a hand up my shirt like nobody was watching when everyone was.
We broke apart, mouths swollen, my lower lip was bleeding.
A reminder for both of us—this was no cease-fire, this wasn’t real, it was all a carefully constructed show.
“Mmmmm…” I smirked. “Looks like Junior’s not playing around tonight, ladies.”
Screams went up as Junior grabbed my ass and squeezed so hard, I knew I would bruise later. He roughly pulled me against his chest and nipped at my neck.
I told my body it didn’t feel good.
I told my heart we were safe.
And I forced myself to believe the lie every single time we touched.
Because to do otherwise—would destroy me.

I love RVD's books and I love her original Eagle Elite books, but this new series - I don't know if it's for me. It was written well and the storyline was there but maybe the Covid virus had me in a mood. I really thought the characters were characters of themselves. Where was the Chase and Phoenix we'd come to love? Instead we'd have Phoenix, who beat his kid when he was a child to teach him a mafia lesson? It just didn't track for me. Then, there was the "don't acknowledge we're mafia, but tell everyone around that we're mafia!!" I know a little something of the mafia and here's what I know - don't acknowledge it, don't speak about it and for the love of Pete, don't flash it around like a diamond. This book is great fiction which is why I kept reading because it's fiction and I don't expect it to be "The Great American Novel." All-in-all, this was an almost 4-star read. As an author their worldbuilding is incredibly complicated and this book though more violent than any of the others...in my heart, I don't think she made it that way for just the giggles of it. I think she did it because it's a new series and that's where the world is going.

Excerpt:
He’s a creature of habit, and it only makes things easier on my end.
I watch as he makes quick work of the steps leading from the precinct to the curbside where a food truck is parked, clearly raking in the cash if the coming and going of countless employees is any indication.
Detective Warren pays, then stands off to the side as he waits for his lunch order to be called. I study him through the small monocular from where I lie haphazardly sprawled on one of the benches across the street, and my eyes catch sight of a small nick along the left side of his jaw.
Thanks to the last vagrant who claimed this spot, I lie on padded newspapers clad in an oversized dark green poncho, the hood covering my head. With my projected air of defeat and filth, I easily blend in with the others in the vicinity.
Once the detective collects his order, I wait until he heads toward the stairs leading back to the building before I make the call.
Carefully stacking his to-go coffee on top of his Styrofoam takeout container, he withdraws his cell and stares down at the screen for a beat before answering.
“Detective Warren.”
“Hello, Detective. I’ve been meaning to call you.” The free voice-distortion app is doing its job, thankfully.
“Who is this?” He immediately glances around, searching for sight of anyone who stands out.
“Do you know what’s been going on with the Dixie Mafia these days?”
There’s a subtle stiffening of his shoulders. “Who the hell is this?”
“You’ve been working hard, but nothing’s stuck, huh?” It’s a rhetorical question, so I don’t pause for him to answer. “Well, that dirty money that went missing the other night? It found its way to a good cause. The Salvation Army and the Center for Abused and Neglected Children.” My voice hardens. “Those organizations will do that blood money justice.”
Detective Warren shakes his head slowly. “You can’t just go around killing people.” As he gains momentum, his tone grows firmer. “That’s not how things work.”
I glare even though he can’t see me. “That’s how things work now, Detective. When the justice system fails, someone else needs to step in.”
“You can’t—”
“Hey, Detective?” I interrupt suddenly. Because there’s my cue: the wince-inducing screech of the city bus’s brakes as it draws to its scheduled stop in front of the precinct. “Be careful shaving next time. It’d be a shame to nick any more of that handsome face.” The bus blocks my view of the detective as I end the call, then peel off the poncho, and tuck it beneath the thick wad of newspapers before I stride away.
I’m out of sight before the bus drives off.

Trailer

Excerpt
Death. Heartache. Vengeance. This isn’t a tale for the tender-hearted, the judgmental, or those who refuse to think outside the box and look at the broader picture. Those who think that everything is black and white. Simple. Cut and dried. It’s not. There’s always shades of gray. It’s easier to say “I’d never” when you’re sitting safely at home with the people you love most right by your side. When grief hasn’t woven itself so deeply in the fabric of your DNA that it can never be unraveled. There can be no separation. And even if you tried, it would only result in you becoming a frayed and tangled mess. It’s easy to say you’d never walk the treacherous moral tightrope. But you aren’t the one who plummeted to the depths of hell, littered with the agony of loss and the anger of injustice, and had to claw your way out. This story isn’t scrawled on pristine white pages in bold black ink. Marred, torn, and blood-spattered, its chapters hold deep gouges inflicted by betrayal. This story is about a woman who had everything taken from her.And how she took it all back.

This is for charity. This is for fun. You are a professional. You can do it.

Those are the words that Calloway Alvarez chants to herself as she watches all the large men gather into the small room where she’ll be doing the interviews for her employer—Hero Magazine.

Honestly, she’s convinced herself that she can’t accomplish the task at hand.

That is until she hears his voice, and her head turns to see him standing there.

Louis Spurlock. Greek god. SWAT officer. Keeper of her secrets. Ultimate fantasy. Man who will break her heart.
***
Louis Spurlock has been playing nice.

He’s been biding his time, giving Calloway the space she thinks she needs.

But then he sees her taking photos of his friends in all states of undress, talking to them all as if they’re best friends, and that little thread of control he’d been managing to hold onto unravels.

Let’s change it up, she says. And the moment the words are out of her mouth, he’s stripping to his skivvies, and throwing out a challenge while he’s at it.

Calloway won’t know what hit her when he’s through playing.

But he does know one thing for sure. When it ends, she’ll be his.

I love this series by Lani Lynn Vale and I'll be saying that later. I loved Louis and Calloway. I loved seeing all the other members of SWAT and their families. I absolutely loved the storyline. What I didn't like was the "danger angst" it was kind of one and done, but I loved everything else and can't wait for the next one!!

This was a quick, quick read about Rex and while I love him as a character - I don't think we got to see enough of him. For a character as big as he is and for how many times we've seen him in the series...this was just meh. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. I just thought it was entertaining to read during Pandemic 2020. I wish I could say more but the female heroine had me asking the question of 1) does she have Tourette's or 2) does she have Asperger's. There was no explanation as to why she was the way she was.

Mason was in the driver’s seat and I was in the passenger seat. Logan looked at each of us. He was wearing a distinct frown-smirk combo on his face as he said his piece. Problem was, he’d been saying it since we left Boston, since we landed in California, and since we’d been in the rental and driving three hours past Fallen Crest. It’d been said. It’d been heard. We were now at the part where we wanted to murder my brother-in-law. Or, correction, where I wanted to murder my brother-in-law. Mason was stoic and driving. He was able to get in the zone and tune Logan out. Taylor was sitting in her chair, reading on her phone. She had the whole tuning-out thing too. Not me. I was a mom, so somehow that meant I always had to be aware and alert, and now I was close to grinding my teeth and yelling for a Logan time-out. Five minutes in the back, please. Mason grunted. “Tough shit.” Nice. Maybe he wasn’t so ‘tuned out.’ I looked at Taylor. “Can you keep him under control?” She glanced up from her phone. “You know the answer to that question. You’ve known him longer.” Touché. I’m not sleeping with him.” Taylor just laughed. “Shouldn’t have said that. He’s probably refraining from twenty different inappropriate jokes as I’m talking.” “Ahem.” Logan gave us both a look. “It’s because I love both of you—in different ways—and respect both of you that I’m not touching that. But Sam…” Logan leveled me with an aggrieved look, his eyebrows raised. “Can you watch what you say? Old Logan would’ve been all over that one, and can you imagine the innuendos?” He gestured to himself, his face tight. “But I’m here. Being polite—” “Sorry. I thought since you’re older and in law school, you’d be more mature.” “It’s like you don’t know me at all.” But he was grinning. “Logan.” Insert some assertive tone here. I had to make my point. “We got a babysitter for the weekend. I got permission for a full weekend off from my training. Your brother is on a much-needed vacation before football training starts, and I have been needing Heather time even though I saw her a few weeks ago.” I had a point. What was it? “So shut it, okay?” That was my point. “All I’m saying is that we were supposed to do the yacht. Nate and Matteo were up for it. Now suddenly we’re doing a camping thing. I’m not clear on the why?” Mason glanced into the rearview mirror. “It was Nate’s idea. He said something about family research. What’s your issue? You like camping.” “That’s when we were young. We did stupid shit back then like. We’re old now. If we go camping, I prefer it to be on things like yachts. Or we stay in a mega-mansion and our camping is napping by the pool.
