He Can Protect Me!!

The Protector (Sons of Texas, #2) The Protector by Donna Grant

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

EVERYTHING’S HOTTER IN TEXAS

When Marine Force Recon captain Cullen Loughman learns that his father’s been kidnapped, he will do whatever it takes to find him. In order to achieve his mission, Cullen will need to team up with the best of the best—someone who just happens to be the most stunning woman he’s ever laid eyes on…

This isn’t the first rodeo for ex--Air Force pilot Mia Carter. Still, Cullen’s bad-boy good looks and charm are distracting her from duty. . .and it appears that the feeling is mutual. As Mia and Cullen make their descent into a dark, dangerous world, their attraction reaches the boiling point. But is their desire worth the risk when a ruthless enemy is waiting in the wings—or will their Lone Star love conquer all, in The Protector, the next Sons of Texas novel by New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant.

Can you say lots of action? I loved this book from page 1! It has characters from the first book and I had to go back and read it first before I picked this one up to start it and I wasn't disappointed I did that. I loved all the characters that were revisited in this book. I enjoyed the pace and the plot. At no point did it get boring, which is a big draw for me when reading a book. I'd say that Donna Grant is a definite buy for me in the future. I had her first book and didn't know it and hadn't read it but I'm sure glad I did because it helped when reading this book. However, you don't have to read book 1 but it helps because book 2 picks up where book 1 leaves off. If you're like me, then you like to read your series in order and I'm orderly like that..

There was a whole lot of information in this book and a lot of action. The romance was really kind of forced and secondary to me. I kind of thought that it could have been a longer book to be honest. It's one of those books where you really don't have to have a romance at all and it's still a really good book. Nothing is really resolved in this book, so it's going to continue into the third book - which I will buy!! It's that good. I love a good suspense, espionage book that leaves you hanging.

If you're looking for a book that is thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish with non-stop action, then this is your book!!

I was given a copy of this ARC from the publisher on Netgalley for a honest review. All of the above comments are my express opinions and no one else's.

Review: The Devil's Daughter

The Devil's Daughter The Devil's Daughter by Katee Robert
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Growing up in a small town isn’t easy, especially when you’re the daughter of a local cult leader. Ten years ago, Eden Collins left Clear Springs, Montana, and never once looked back. But when the bodies of murdered young women surface, their corpses violated and marked with tattoos worn by her mother’s followers, Eden, now an FBI agent, can’t turn a blind eye. To catch the killer, she’s going to have to return to the fold.

Sheriff Zach Owens isn’t comfortable putting Eden in danger, even if she is an elite agent. And he certainly wasn’t expecting to be so attracted to her. As calm and cool as she appears, he knows this can’t be a happy homecoming. Zach wants to protect her—from her mother, the cult, and the evil that lurks behind its locked gates. But Eden is his only key to the tight-lipped group, and she may just be closer to the killer than either one of them suspects…

I would put this at the top of the books I've read so far in 2017. It starts off slow for me but then it gets going and I really enjoyed it. I read about 9 books this weekend and this by far was the top 5. I love Zach. He had protector written all over him. He's not backing down and he's not giving up. I love heroes who are just that. They aren't wishy washy and they just have masculine feel to them. I loved his stubborness. I love suspense and mystery and this book had it. Did I know who it was from the beginning? Not right away. Did I have an inkling of who it could be? Yes I did. However, a good mystery is one that takes you in multiple directions and I like that. It takes you down many roads and it tells many stories. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a romantic suspense novel.

Review: Making Faces

Making Faces Making Faces by Amy Harmon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ambrose Young was beautiful. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was thirteen. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have . . . until he wasn't beautiful anymore.

Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy, and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl.

This is a story of friendship that overcomes heartache, heroism that defies the common definitions, and a modern tale of Beauty and the Beast, where we discover that there is a little beauty and a little beast in all of us.

I dropped all other books when this showed up on my shelf. I've read this book three times and every time I'm a snotted mess at about 72 percent until the end of the book. This book is one that resonates in your soul and doesn't let go. It hangs on, it's one that you recommend to your friends, family and everyone in-between. I love it and hate it at the same time because I know I won't be able to breathe the next day. Amy Harmon has done something that not many authors do - she tells a story without explicit sex or language. She tells a story and keeps it going til the very last page and you're sitting there with a feeling of loss, strength, hope and love. I bought this book for my mother when it came out to read. My mother is someone who only reads Christian books but yet I wanted her to read this so bad. This book has some Christian scripture and references, it does have some language but not a lot. I bought it in hope that she would see past it and boy did she. She loved this book and for my mother to give her stamp of approval on a book, it means the world. I read this book in about 5 hours and didn't stop. That means radio silence for everyone and I was on-call.

This book is about Fern, Ambrose and Bailey (Oh Bailey, how I love you!!) and it goes back and forth through their childhood. I loved all these characters, there wasn't one of the main characters that I could say I didn't like. I loved Brosey's (Ambrose's) friends, even Beans. This book was a tearjerker. It was heartbreaking and tore at your heartstrings. Bailey has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and it can't be cured and the first time he finds out he's going to die, I thought I was going to go through a whole box of Kleenex so I cut up an old t-shirt and used it instead. To listen to Fern tell him she might die first by getting hit by a car while walking down the road to make him feel better is so real to life. She starts listing all the ways she might die first to make him feel better. How we all need a Fern!! She is his person. She's his helper but also his cousin who I honestly believe God sent to him and you find out at the end of the story that her father always believed that once Bailey was gone God would take Fern soon after because of it. It's a sad thought to think that God would do that and he's a pastor but he does. Fern always has Bailey's best interests at heart and always helps him and he is one of those characters you can't help but love. He's all about wrestling and wanting to wrestle but he's also all about Ambrose and helping him become a better person and wrestler. Bailey is really the hero in this story. Hands down, this book wouldn't be what it is if not for Bailey.

Fern is an ugly-duckling and she's never the one that the boys look at. She writes letter to Ambrose for her friend Rita who's beautiful, even though she's always been in love with him. Ever since he helped her bury BS "Beautiful Spider" and sang the "Itsy Bitsy Spider" at it's funeral when they were ten. She's a deep character who writes the most eloquent poetry that says:

If God makes all our faces, did he laugh when he made me?
Does he make the legs that cannot walk and eyes that cannot see?
Does he curl the hair upon my head 'til it rebels in wild defiance?
Does he close the ears of the deaf man to make him more reliant?
Is the way I look coincidence or just a twist of fate?
If he made me this way, is it okay to blame him for the things I hate?
For the flaws that seem to worsen every time I see a mirror,
For the ugliness I see in me, for the loathing and the fear?
Does he sculpt us for his pleasure, for a reason I can't see?
If God makes all our faces, did he laugh when he made me?

How many times have we all looked in the mirror and thought this? It's like the author reached inside my very soul and knew what I felt and how long I'd been feeling it. Those words I will have written on a plaque and framed, so I can read them everyday and know that I'm more than a face. This book just has all the feels!!

There's a scene in the book that I love where Fern refers to Bailey as BS like the spider but calls him "Beautiful Sheen, Beautiful Bailey Sheen" and it's at a part in the book that I'm not going to give away but I had to get up and take the dogs out...at 4 a.m. because I couldn't breathe from crying. I literally was like "NOPE...can't handle no more snot, gotta get up and find something cause I'm dying here." And then I went right back to the book of the best night of my weekend.

You come to love all the characters in this book but one. Ambrose's friends: Beans, Paulie, Grant and Jesse - You love them all in their differences. It's not an easy story to read about them. It's about September 11th, the fallout afterward and 5 boys who join up to make a difference not knowing that the difference will be made in 4 families and a whole town.

There was a lot going on in this book but I didn't feel at any time that I didn't know what was going on. I always felt like everything was explained. There were some really hard topics in this book: War, domestic abuse, dying, peer pressure, ugliness of the world and of oneself, terrorism. It's all in there and it's dealt with appropriately.

Buy this book, buy it for your friends, family and gift it to people you love. It's an awesome book and has made me read all of the authors books since. You will not be disappointed you read it and if you are, then you're not human...you just can't be!! I will guarantee that a part of this book will resonate with you somewhere unless you're a sociopath and then it probably won't!

Interview with the Amazing Tawna FenskeFirst of all,...

Interview with the Amazing Tawna Fenske
First of all, thank you so much for taking time out to answer some questions today. Let's jump right in and get started. I'm very interested in what motivates you to write the characters that you do? What's your motivation when you're researching a book idea?
Thanks so much for inviting me. You’ve asked some awesome questions!
I’ve had several reviewers describe me as writing “smart girl romance” (which I think is meant as a compliment, though it makes me wonder who’s writing the dumb girl romance).
But it’s true that I tend to write characters who are exceptionally bright with a quick, clever sense of humor. Cassie in The List has a PhD in Crop and Soil Science, while Simon is a Stanford graduate and successful entrepreneur. They’re bright, witty, and oozing with sexual chemistry (which sounds like the symptom of a venereal disease, but I digress).
As far as research goes, my love of trying new things often motivates me. For the record, you really can buy a $6 Wartenberg Wheel on Amazon, and there really is a vegan strip club in Portland, Oregon where you’re greeted at the door with the offer of a $4 motorboat.
Where did you get the idea for your current book that's releasing January 30th?

It started with this mental picture I had of a woman doing the walk of shame with her wine-soaked laptop and something super-incriminating frozen on the monitor. It evolved from there, and the story just started flowing.
I’m a pretty fast writer under normal circumstances, but this book came to me so quickly that I found myself typing at warp speed just to keep up with the characters’ dialogue. I finished the book in roughly half my normal time.
How do you come up with the names for your characters? Are they based on people you know?
I’m pretty uncreative with character names, and often find myself scrolling through my Facebook feed in search of names that click. Other times I’ll steal a name from a friend or neighbor or co-worker. Sometimes I put the question out on Facebook and let readers suggest ideas based on a few tidbits I provide about the characters.
Do you get your inspiration from what you read, see on TV or do the characters and storyline just come to you at random times? Do you find it difficult to have the discipline to sit down and write when there are so many other things you could be doing? For example, if you love to read - there are so many good books out there, how do you not say I'll write later? How do you juggle family commitments?
If you asked people who know me well to describe me in one word, I’m guessing at least half of them would choose either “tenacious” or “driven.” Okay, some of them would choose “wildly inappropriate,” but that doesn’t count because it’s two words.
But suffice it to say, I’m pretty focused on my goals, but I do find I have to be very careful about budgeting my time. A couple years ago I started using an Erin Condren Life Planner to map out my writing time, day job time, and family time. I’ve found it makes a HUGE difference in my ability to manage my schedule and see how my three lives overlap.
And speaking of time, one of the biggest reasons I’m able to crank out books at a pretty fast clip is that I very rarely watch movies or TV. I don’t mean that in a “only a couple hours a night” kinda way. I mean that although there is a television in my home, I have no idea how to operate it. It’s actually not a huge sacrifice to give that up, since screen time isn’t something I enjoy. Reading, on the other hand…I love that, and sometimes struggle to make time for it. It’s actually one of my New Year’s resolutions to carve out more downtime for pleasure reading.
If there was one thing you could impart on someone who wanted to write, what would it be?
READ. Read fiction and non-fiction, magazines and novellas, even the back of the air freshener can in your bathroom. Read CONSTANTLY. It’s the best way I can think of to study the flow of words and get your brain thinking about the best ways to describe actions and people and places. Plus it’s fun!
How long does it normally take you, from start to finish to complete a book?
It depends on the book. I average between 4,000-5,000 written words per “author day” (I’ll get to what I mean by that in a second), though sometimes if I’m really cranking I can do 8,000-10,000 words a day.
The shorter, saucier romantic comedies I write for Entangled Publishing, like my new release, The List) are usually around 55,000 words, while the longer, meatier romantic comedies I write for Montlake are closer to 90,000 words.
As for what I mean by “author day,” most people are surprised to learn I still have a part-time day job. While the author gig is my primary source of income, I’ve found I’m infinitely more productive and centered if I have a reason to get out of the house three days a week to interact with humans. (Bonus: I have the coolest day job on the planet as the PR & Communications Manager for my city’s tourism bureau, which means I get paid to take journalists snowshoeing or to write about who has the city’s best mac & cheese).
The team at my day job is amazing, so there’s a lot of flexibility if I need to break up my workday for a call with my agent or shuffle my schedule to accommodate a deadline. My normal author days are Mondays and Fridays, and occasionally weekends if I have a deadline breathing down my neck.
Last question and thank you so much for answering these. This is for everyone out there who really wants to know about eyecandy: If you could pick one guy to be on the cover of one of your books, who would it be?
My husband. Those blue eyes and hands the size of dinner plates make me swoon every time!
I would personally like to thank you, Ms. Tawna Fenske for allowing me to ask these questions that I've always wondered but nAwww, thank you so much! I appreciate you having me here and posing such fun questions!

Review: Chasing Dust Clouds by Lilliana Rose

Chasing Dust Clouds Chasing Dust Clouds by Lilliana Rose
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sent to the country to visit rural clients accountant Blaise Johns doesn’t know what to do when he meets a mob of sheep on the road. He accidently runs over one of Dusty Miller’s ewes and his cool crisp competitive demeanour is dented as he tries to figure out how to make amends with a woman who is intent on busting his balls. Then there’s the competition, Aaron, who isn’t going to be pushed aside. As the out-of-towner will Blaise step up to country life for Dusty? Dusty is furious at Blaise, but the man won’t go away and leave her to run her farm. A sassy self-sufficient young woman, Dusty struggles to let Blaise who is clueless about the life she lives, in to her heart. When two worlds, country and city come together, an explosion of differences rocks the foundation of two peoples lives, forcing them to face the future in unplanned ways, and to give each other another chance.

I loved this book!!! I love Lilliana Rose anyway so it wasn't a chore to read this. I laughed out loud so many times during this book that I had my family looking at me kind of funny. I also had to buy the book for my mother because she insisted that I do that after hearing me from the living room. If a book can take me away from a hockey game then you know you've hit the puck out of the net. This was one of those books.

First of all, it didn't have the instalove, sex so much it makes you flip the pages at a clip faster than a car on a highway and foul language. It built up to a relationship which made me enjoy this all the more. I like romances that have a slow build and then go from there. Would I read a second book? Heck yes. It took maybe 5 hours to finish this book but I was also doing things in between and I'm a speedreader. Others, it might take a lot longer. The descriptions in the book were like you were right there and I loved that.

I received this book for free from ReadforReview in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I’ve always been Miranda Phillips, the town pariah. Growing up with neglectful parents, having sought attention from all the guys that were willing to give it to me, I wasn’t the most well-behaved kid in Lone Star. Not to mention all of the juvenile delinquent acts I’ve committed in my past.

But now I am Lone Star’s only reporter and I’ve come a long way from being that lost, troubled girl, even if most of the town still judged me for it. I don’t allow anyone to get in the way of what I want. Including Ryan John. So when I corner him in a dark hallway and get him to succumb to the sizzling attraction between us, I know I’m playing with fire.

***

Even though I’ve successfully avoided her for two months, I haven’t forgotten how she tastes or what she feels like in my arms. And when I get sent a mysterious letter from some company wanting to buy my thousand shares of water rights that have been in my family for over a hundred years, I’m convinced that there is no one…err, better equipped, to help me than Lone Star’s reporter, Miranda Phillips.

I know how desperately she wants me and this letter gives me all the reason I need to spend one night with the girl from the wrong side of town. One night in exchange for her tight investigative skills. And believe me, she’s tight, in more ways than one. One night. Because Miranda is trouble and being on the city council, as well as guardian to my younger brother and sister, means I can’t afford trouble.

Even if it comes packaged just the way I like.

OMG this book and not in a good way people!!! Okay, so I like to think I can't be shocked...well that's not true anymore book peeps!!! THIS book shocked me. It wasn't that it didn't have a good synopsis or that it wouldn't have been a good read if it didn't have so much sex. I know what you're thinking - What? That's a good thing! But I have to tell you that it made my eyes and ears cry. If your having sex 2 cabins down from your 13 or so age siblings (meaning you kicked them out of the cabin to have sex) you have a problem. If your sexy talk is "oh you're so wet, blah, blah, blah" over and over the same thing...you've got a problem or you need to seek medical attention immediately! I'm not a prude but this bordered on x-rated and should come with some kind of warning. If your Alpha treats you like a ho, you need to bail...like you're in jail! No lie, I felt like this dude needed to take some etiquette lessons. I read some other reviews saying to trudge through it's worth it - I sadly did not find this the case. I have not found 2 characters that I found so dislikable in...well ever. That's saying a lot. I will say that it was well written and there were no grammar issues I could find with the ARC version. It just took me forever to actually read this book because I was too busy putting it down to read others and a really good book doesn't let you do that. It grips you and doesn't let go...this book sadly didn't do that.

I received this book for free from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
