All my books have alternating narratives, so I get each character's story down first and then fiddle with the structure, move chunks about. I don't plan in any great detail, having only a vague idea where the story is going. I put my characters in the situations I have created for them and see what they do, how they behave and let them lead me. (less)

I catch up on housework. I take a complete break from writing and, as it happens, in a day or two, when I am doing something completely unrelated, washing the dishes, say, or reading an author in a genre very different to mine, I will get an idea and will be suffused with the desire to set it down on paper. “She liked the way a ray of mild autumn sun infiltrating the thick cluster of trees caught a reddish orange leaf swirling in the wind and transformed it golden yellow. She liked that it wasn’t a leaf she recognised, that she could name or associate with her past.”
Renita D'Silva, Monsoon Memories

“What wouldn’t my people give for a few bites of the biryani she ordered me to throw away yesterday because she said it smelt?”
Renita D'Silva, Monsoon Memories

“Where are the coconut trees bowing allegiance to the wind, the wide open spaces, the verdant green fields?”
Renita D'Silva, Monsoon Memories
