¿Dónde Está Beth?

1 – Cleopatra

Meet Lew Kaminski

Where’s Beth?

We meet two new characters in Chapter 2 of the Pilot Episode of 21 Years. And we meet them as they return home in a yellow cab from a week’s cruise to the Caribbean:

The back door of the cab swings open and Lew Kaminski steps out. Forty-five. Dressed casually, and exuding confidence with every movement.

He leans down and helps his wife exit the cab. Izabel, also forty-five. Slim and attractive with blonde hair. Wearing a long navy overcoat and heels, and carrying a matching hand...

Characters Make Your Story

No matter how good or how intricate your plot, you’ll lose viewers if they don’t like your characters and/or don’t find them interesting. That said, let’s take a look at the characters as they appear in the Pilot Episode of 21 Years — “Where’s Beth?”

We meet two characters in the first chapter (Cleopatra), but we have no idea who they are or what they look like. We meet a YOUNG MAN and a YOUNG WOMAN.

Too dark to recognize the young man and young woman going at it.

W...

List of Episodes

What is 21 Years?

21 Years is an epic crime saga following in the footsteps of Sons of Anarchy, The Blacklist, Narcos, House of Cards, and Breaking Bad. Originally written in screenplay formatting and aimed directly at Netflix, and later transposed into ebooks and paperbacks for your reading enjoyment.

Twenty-two episodes comprise a Netflix series. Below you’ll be able to follow the progress of the completion of the episodes. I plan to write all twenty-two myself. Why? I love The Blacklist an...

The Character Takes Over

Answer and Question

The Answer – One of the most popular game shows in the history of television. Art Fleming was the first host. And there were only two.

It’s a no-brainer if the third clue were “The other host was Alex Trebek.” Now, just about everybody knows the correct question.

The Question – What is Jeopardy?

Please note that the answer is in the form of a question. Because, you know, that’s how it works on Jeopardy.

Cliché

A cliché about writing fiction claims that the characters take...

Don’t Let the Bedbugs Bite

29 – Don’t Let the Bedbugs Bite

AT THE SAME TIME.

We’re inside the old farmhouse and the lights are now on in the kitchen. We see Billy, Russo, and Cue Ball facing each other in a tight circle in the middle of the large room.

Knuckles walks past carrying some blankets.

“We never wanted to hurt them,” Cue Ball says. “Honest. But, now, we figure if we turn them loose, they go straight to the cops.”

“No shit, Sherlock,” Billy says.

“So what do we do now?” Cue Ball asks.

“Take us back to when thi...

A Pot of Gold

28 – A Pot of Gold

HALF AN HOUR LATER.

We’re in Lew and Izabel’s living room and we see Stan sitting on the sofa watching The Rockford Files. Izabel and Pearl are also sitting on the sofa. Biding their time and waiting to find out how things went between Lew and the detective.

Two minutes pass, and the front door opens. Lew enters and strides to the middle of the room.

“Any luck?” Izabel asks hopefully.

“Some good news,” Lew says, “but don’t get too carried away.”

“Lewis,” Pearl says, “you do...

Shit Hit the Fan

27 – Shit Hit the Fan

AT THE SAME TIME.

We’re in the 12th District squad room and see uniformed cops and detectives moving all around.

We see a cigarette, half smoked, sitting in an ashtray filled with ashes and butts. And there’s Lew sitting across the desk from Detective Reggie Lawson. Twenty-eight, black, and six years on the force. Two years as a detective.

Lew’s halfway through his story. His notebook’s open on the desk and Beth’s photo sits right in front of the detective.

“First,” Lew...
