“Would you like a balloon, little girl? Which colour would you like?” The vendor asked, pointing at all the colourful variations he held in his hand. She stared at them and smiled, before nodding and pointing at the green one.“Hey!” A voice shouted out. “Hey! Step away from her.”The vendor turned around, frowning. A middle aged man was racing up to him, his feet hi...

The Liebster Award tag

Back in the early days of blogging, a common way to escape 'writer's block' was to take up tags. It's been years since I've done one, yet I have to admit that I enjoyed seeing the "tag culture of blogs" is still prevalent even a decade later.

Fellow blogger and co-author Asiya tagged me for the Liebster award.
Quoting from her blog,

"According to Lorraine Reguly's research of this award, this award exists only on the internet, and is given to bloggers by other bloggers. It has German origins – t...

Of Man & Dog

No matter how close we are to another person, few human relationships are as free from strife, disagreement, and frustration as is the relationship you have with a good dog. Few human beings give of themselves to another as a dog gives of itself. I also suspect that we cherish dogs because their unblemished souls make us wish - consciously or unconsciously - that we were as innocent as they are, and make us yearn for a place where innocence is universal and where the meanness, the betrayals,...

“Okay. You now have my undivided attention.” Minister Kurien Nambiar said as he leaned forward and locked eyes with Cyrus. It was an hour after the minister's speech and the crowds were still in the main hall listening to other dignitaries.
“According to my secretary Chandy, you requested to m...

#5sentences Thank you note

Earlier this month, I had asked for your help for getting my short story considered for Indireads Second Short Story contest. A lot of you were gracious enough to help via social media platforms in sharing the story as well as by your comments on the story.

Along with Indireads, I want to thank you all sincerely. My story, “The Ballet” did eventually win the Popular Pick award. It feels very heartening to move away from the genres I'm more comfortable with and win whil...

Kalathappam

If you carefully observe the savory dishes showcased in a traditional Onam sadya or even the traditional Malabar cuisine, you will find an abundant use of easily available local products including coconuts, rice, bananas et al.

Thus, it should come as no surprise if I reveal to you that when it comes to making sweet dishes too, the usual suspects once more find their way into our recipes.

Kalathappam is a sweet dish prepared commonly in the Malabar regions of Kerala, especially in Kannur a...

Whose snake is it anyway?

Eager to share more comical anecdotes here, I had asked my fellow doctors about funny incidents that had occurred during their career that they felt would be worth sharing with the general public. As the responses poured in, I started to realize something – we doctors have a very morbid sense of humour, don’t we? You think I am bluffing? Here are some samples of just the first line of the ‘funny anecdotes’ that came in my inbox:

“There was this time when we were removing a cancerous growth…”. ...

How to Write Short Romance...

A Daily Romance asked me if I would be willing to share a few points that I felt were essential to making a good short romantic tale. That did get me thinking...What really goes into making a love story memorable? A lot obviously, but then what do you do when you are restricted by the word count as well?  How do you make your story stand out? These are some of the points I came up with..

I prefer the time frame in my short stories to be, well, short. An hour, a day, a week…...

Alcohol Withdrawal: Just another thing Kerala is not prepared for post-prohibition

Today, I am going to be focusing on a topic which I predict is going to discussed across the country (and especially in my home state) quite extensively in the days to come, once the new 'alcohol prohibition' law is enforced in God's Own Country.
While this can also be seen as a medical article, the main aim of this post is to share it with my fellow Keralites so that they can spot the symptoms at the earliest, both as individuals and as doctors.

Let me start off with the key point - Alcohol Wi...

The Ongoing novel of Team 'Bards of the Blogosphere' #CelebrateBlogging

As part of Blogadda's ongoing "Game of Blogs", teams of ten bloggers from across the country come together and share their individual insights to help create a unique "one of its kind" novel where all ten bloggers contribute, based on characters provided. This process carries on over a period of three rounds with an elimination every week until the best story is eventually found.

The jury panel for the contest:
