The Journey Begins ~ With Finn Cole

I always enjoyed the scenic downtown core of Brantford, Ontario. When I was young, my mother would take me to visit my grandfather and we would spend the day. Between his large cherry tree and adventures in stores and cafes, there was always something to do. How ironic it was that, now, here I was parking on the side of a street for an afternoon with Finn Cole.

“It's about time we got here. My legs are cramped from this small back seat.”

“Owe!” I hit my head on the roof of the jeep. Thank goodness I already parked. Looking in my rear view mirror, I realized to my horror, that Charles Bizarro was sitting behind me. All I can think of is that urban legend. You know - The one where the lady is driving and doesn't see the killer in her back seat - Someone tries flashing head lights at her, but she is still oblivious. I was that lady. I didn't need a mirror to know I looked quite silly, sitting there, with my mouth hanging wide open.

“How did you get back there?”

“How?” Charles answered. “I opened the door and got in. How do you think I got back here?”

“Okay.” That makes sense of course, but still leaves a question. “When did you get in?”

“Well obviously before we left Burlington,” he said, flashing a snarl of a grin while stretching his legs on the sidewalk.

This conversation was going nowhere fast. I didn't expect it to get any better. If there was one thing I had learned about Bizarro over the past few months, it was that he didn't always answer all my questions. He also seemed to go everywhere I went. The was no sense arguing with him. It would just make me late. Just thinking about it, I almost missed the door to The Starving Artist Cafe completely. Mind you, it is tucked away neatly – one of those hidden gems on a picturesque old downtown street that everyone wants to discover.

The inside is completely different from what I expected from the street looking in. Finn chose a spot at the very back. Weaving my way between tables and chairs of various sizes, gave me the perfect vantage point to browse the work of local artists lining the walls, each one with a price tag.

“Hey,” Finn said. “It's good to see you.” His usual hello embrace and peck on the cheek followed. To my surprise, he did the same to Bizarro.

“Charles Bizarro. A pleasure to meet you.”

“Nice nails,” Finn said with a chuckle.

Those nails are something to behold. I still don't want to know what they might be stained with. The thought of blood makes feel a bit faint. Guess sitting might be a good idea.

“Thank you for coming,” Finn said. “Did you want to order something?”

I can feel saliva pooling in my mouth at just the sound of some of the food on the menu. It's afternoon, barely. Ordering something couldn't hurt, except maybe my diet. My choice, grilled cheese. Now, while the others are deciding still, I have a chance to check out the surroundings. There is so much to take in. Wow, there is even a ledge that holds business cards for local artists and businesses.

“The food sounds so good. It makes me shiver with anticipation.”

I almost forgot Charles Bizarro was here. It was so quiet. Maybe it was the words, or maybe the smirk on is face, but his face blurred before my eyes. Great! Now I am having lunch with Dr. Frank N. Furter. Why can't things be normal again?

“You look like you've fallen into a ... time slip.” Charles said.

A small Karaoke system sitting on a low table to my left begins playing in the background. Of course, the song is “Time Warp.”

Okay enough of the Rocky Horror mind flips. It's time to move on. “I was just organizing my thoughts. Finn, you mind if I ask a few questions?”

“Go ahead,” Finn answered.

“I understand you are working on a new charity. Could you explain what BATA stands for?”

“Brantford’s Advocacy Transgender Alliance, is a grassroots committee dedicated to the health and well-being, as well as ensuring equality/equity for those in the trans community of Brantford/Brant County. We promote education and awareness as well as provide advocacy ensuring all necessary resources and programs are available to the trans community. As the needs of the trans community grows, so will we at the BATA. We are developing programs like the gender closet - donation of used and new clothing for those in the community who cannot afford to buy gender affirming clothing, especially our youth who do not have the support they require at home. We will organize and create events throughout the year such as TDOV/TDOR - international trans day of visibility and international trans day of remembrance as part of the education/awareness mandate. We will continue to evolve to include bigger needs in the community such as a drop-in center/shelter for LGBTQ+ youth to have a safe place to go when things get tough at home. As well as temporary shelter for others in the LGBTQ+ community who cannot find safety in the two shelters at work in our community.”

“What will donations be used for? How much of every dollar will go directly to charitable needs?”

There was no hesitation in Finn's answer. “Every cent of all donations will go toward building a stronger trans community. This is a labour of love for those involved.”

From the slight upwards curl of his lips, I could tell he was in his element. I always new Finn was engrossed in volunteer work within the community, but now, here, it was obvious, this was a passion. “How many different groups do you play an active role in?”

“I am the lead facilitator for Gender Journey Brant and co-facilitator for Brant Trans Youth Support Group - for people in transition and also a back-up facilitator for the LGBTQ Coffee Social.

You can add to that my membership in the community education program called PACE. A community education position, for individuals who have an interest in understanding what can be done to increase their physical activity, and have a desire to share that knowledge with others in their community by leading group activity programs, mentoring, and being able to connect members of the program with other community programs and resources.”

“Wow, that is a lot! How do you find the time to volunteer for so many?” I have a hard time finding time for coffee sometimes. I may have to come to terms with being an under-achiever after today.

“In May of 2010, I found myself out of work and at the start of what would be my journey into disability. The spine is central to how the body functions. It is the core of the bodies frame allowing us to be mobile, as well as houses within all the bundles of nerves that signals the brain which then tells the body what to do. Like say breathe, or tells the heart to pump, or the throat to open and swallow. Everything the body must do to live. I hurt my bodies main frame. So, finding myself with a lot of extra time, I needed to feel like I was still contributing to the world. Most of my work is done from home on my computer. The rest of the time you can find me at the Grand River Community Health Centre. All of the programs and committees I am involved in happen there; with the exception of the Youth Pride Committee which generally meets at the Family and Community Services branch office.”

“How many committees do you sit on?”

“I feel privileged to sit on the Youth Pride Committee which works towards aiding our LGBTQ+ youth in their mission to educate and bring awareness to their unique voices within the greater LGBTQ+ community. With a growing number of young committee members from around the community doing their part to organize and chair Rainbow Alliances/GSAs within their respective schools, to taking leadership roles within the community by sitting on panels and speaking publicly about the issues that they face on a daily basis. As a committee we also organize monthly social events for the youth in the LGBTQ+ community as well as helping them to organize their own Pride event every year during Pride.

I sit on the Bridge Brant, a grassroots committee that works to identify and address inequalities that are experienced by the diverse sexual and gender identified communities within Brantford and Brant County.

I also sit on the Mental Health Awareness Week project committee every January as organizations throughout the community plan and prepare for the first week in May where through the city events are happening with the express purpose of raising awareness to mental health issues. All events at their core are centred around mental health awareness and eroding the stigma that is commonly attached to it. Every year some form of art show is included. Last year it was pieces done by children affected in some way by mental health. This year it will be pieces from all ages of mental health consumers, friends and family who are, or have been affected. I myself have a piece set to display for two weeks at the Starving Artist Cafe. I spend much of my week at the Grand River CHC chalking hair for mental health, as well as chalking the sidewalk with sayings such as - You’d never say, “It’s just cancer, get over it.”, or No More Stigma.”

I could feel the enthusiasm in the conviction of his words. I wanted to know more ... to help. His attitude was contagious. “There must be a lot of events you participate in. Can you tell us about them? Can anyone join in?”

“GJB/BTYSG/LGBTQ Coffee Social have begun an ongoing outing with a local high end used clothing shop called The Closet Door - which is situated within the Artisans Village - They open the shop on a Tuesday evening, creating a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community - friends and family - to come out and shop, offering a discounted rate. May 3rd will be the second of these events affectionately called the closet raid. We plan on doing at least 4 per year. The owner Tammy and her team of wonderful volunteers create the best situation for those in the community that may have a difficult time shopping in the community at large. No hateful stares, no discriminatory slurs, etc...

June 14th during the week of Pride, will be the second year I have been asked by the Pride Committee to organize and host a trans event during the week. This year we are planning an open mic night at the Starving Artist for anyone who wishes to join their voices with those of the trans community. Personal narrative/ stories are the essential bridge that connects all human beings.

The Bridge has been organizing a year long speaker series dealing with an array of elements and issues surrounding the LGBTQ+ community. I sit on the sub-committee for the one slated in November which is directed at the medical community and disparages in health care for the trans community. This event is for the medical community only, but I am so looking forward to it as it will speak to this communities medical practitioners bringing awareness to the need for many of them to get educated and be a supportive part of this community.

Those are just a few events already in the planning stages. We will are looking at hosting some specific events, special dates of remembrance for the trans community & LGBTQ+ youth.”

“What areas are welcome to participate?”

“All areas are welcome. If you hear about something we are doing and wish to participate, come on down.” The smile on Finn's face beamed excitement. It was like a flashlight being turned on before my eyes.

“What can members of the community do to help?”

“Get involved. Come out and participate in every and all events. Join the BATA committee and help us create a safer community for all those who identify as trans.”

“Can you tell us a bit about your personal journey?”

“My personal journey began at the age of 5. Given the state of things some 45 years ago it was not a common occurrence to come out as trans. Not like today’s children whose parents are listening to them when they are insistent, persistent, and consistent about the fact that something isn’t quite right. At 15 I had to push those feeling deep down inside to the point where I was no longer aware of the fact. It wasn’t until I walked away from my family - who had never been supportive of me in anything - that I realized I had one shot at getting my life right; one shot at being happy; one shot at being me. The real me. Ever since I kicked the closet door of its hinges I have been a loud voice in this community. I have a voice, and I will use it to further the rights of my trans brothers and sisters.”

“October 16th is a special day. Please take a moment to explain why. What does wearing purple on this day symbolize?”

Spirit Day is a day dedicated for standing up against bullying and supporting LGBTQ+ perceived youth. Brittany Mcmillan, a Canadian high school student, started Spirit Day in 2010 in response to all the LGBTQ+ suicides. The name Spirit Day comes from the purple stripe of the Rainbow Flag, whose creator Gilbert Baker defined it as "representing spirit'". I am working with some wonderful people on a fundraising event to raise awareness and funds for the BATA.”

“That's it!” Charles Bizarro exclaimed. His finger stuck straight up as if pointing towards the sky. “I have the perfect plan.” His eyes bulged out and sunk back in a few times.
I guess the look on our faces gave away we had absolutely no idea what was going on inside his brain – not that I think anyone ever did.

“We are going to have a transgender spirit day at the haunt. October 16th is a Sunday!” The flamboyance in Bizarro's voice exploded across the room.

“That would work,” Finn replied. “Everyone could wear purple. I could be there with information for anyone who needs it too.”

“And I will donate all proceeds to a charity of your choice. My dear Finn, this works for both of us. I need some new ... blood,” insert random evil chuckle here, “and you can provide that.” His arm flung around Finn's shoulders. “Now that I have solved what we came her for, shall we eat?”

As if on cue the waitress placed plates in front of us. How does he do that? On a side note, the food is amazing. One bite tells me it is going to be very quiet until our plates empty. That doesn't mean I am going to let Charles take over the discussion. As soon as my last bite is gone, I am continuing with my interview.

“November 20th is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Can you elaborate on what the day is about?” Watching Finn wipe a few crumbs from his face and swallow, I realize I probably should have waited for him to finish comfortably before grilling him with another question. Bizarro's attention was off in space somewhere anyways.

“Definitely. TDOR, which occurs annually on November 20, is a day to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of trans-phobia and to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the transgender community.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was founded in 1999 by Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a trans woman who is a graphic designer, columnist, and activist, to memorialize the murder of Rita Hester in Allston, Massachusetts Since its inception, TDoR has been held annually on November 20, and it has slowly evolved from the web-based project started by Smith into an international day of action. In 2010, TDoR was observed in over 185 cities throughout more than 20 countries.

Typically, a TDoR memorial includes a reading of the names of those who lost their lives during the previous year, and may include other actions, such as candlelight vigils, art shows, food drives, film screenings, and marches.”

“How would someone contact you? Do you use social media? If yes, what are the links?”

"My Facebook page - Finn Cole. Gender Journey Brant FB page.
https://www.facebook.com/omanacain
https://www.facebook.com/genderjourne... "

“Can you suggest any resources for transgender people outside southern Ontario?”

“There is a host of resources that can be found whether searching google, or FaceBook. I have a page on FaceBook called Gender Journey Brant that posts all sorts of resources, news, and articles from around the world. GJB will soon become BATA. Still focused on education and awareness.”

“Is there someone they could contact in your organizations for support, help, advice?”

“The FB page has a message option that gets answered in a timely fashion. On our flyer there is a specific gmail account for both of the trans groups that goes directly to my cell phone, as well as the number of our liaison at the Grand River CHC Caitlin Francis 9-5. Monday - Friday.”

“I know you support a lot of local talent and small businesses. Can you share a few with us?”

Starving Artists, Sophia’s Bakery, The Closet Door, Locke & Key Treasures, Unique Outlooks, Twitches Stitches, Kelly’s Kandles, Octupus Red, PhotoHouse Studio, Steven B Andrews & Collected Thoughts, Eyes of a Crow, and C.A.King.”

“Is there anything else you would like to share?”

“Take some time and acquaint yourself with someone from the trans community. Look beyond the differences to all the things that truly connect us all... Humanity. We really are the same after all. Different story; same genre.”

“One last question. I have to ask. Who is your favourite author?” Okay, I know he's going to plug me. I can't help but flash a sly smile.

“Anne Rice, and of course my wonderful friend and ally Carol King.” Finn doesn't disappoint with that answer.

“Anne Rice, wonderful lady!” Bizarro exclaimed.

And he's back. I wonder where Charles disappears to. On second thought, I don't want to know. I think it might be time for him to return to his crypt.

“Thank you for your time today. I am happy to support your programs in any way I can. You have inspired me to make my presence known in the community.”

The Portal Prophecies will be giving $1.00 for every $10.00 spent at the following events to Finn Cole to be donated to the charity of his choice:

Author Interview ~ Heidi Angell

Dr. Anne Hutchins took in a deep breath of air and released it again. It was crisp and clean, something you couldn't find in a busy city. RRNA was just what the doctor ordered. Of course, she was the doctor. She chuckled under her breath at her logic and the new acronym she had just made, RRNA, Rest; Relaxation; Nature; and Adventure. There would definitely be a use for that somewhere in her practice. She pushed the mental note out of her mind, handing the rental company attendant her credit card to pay for the kayak she had reserved.

Placing her hands on her hips, she smiled at the view. Today was the perfect day. It was still early and the water was relatively still, the moon reflecting its glow off the surface. Even if she wasn't the first one out, she knew this area held more than enough places, hidden gems you might say, for all to find.

There was a certain satisfaction, almost an instant gratification, that came with the first paddle breaking through the water, sending ripples of tiny waves to break the glass illusion. As always, she knew where she was going. The one person vessel cast off towards a series of caves and alcoves cut deep into the stone.

She stopped paddling. It was time. This was a sight she wasn't going to miss. The sun was beginning to crown over the top of one of the higher rock formations. Its rays illuminated the reds and golds of the clay that the entire landscape was made of. For a moment, the light and dark met. White fluffy clouds floated in a sea of purples, oranges and reds in the sky, the lake acting as a mirror of the same image. The sight was breathtaking. It made her whole trip worth taking, even though it had just begun.

Taking some time to admire the rock formations, she continued paddling down narrow river-ways. There was a certain humbling feeling that accompanied the sight of how water had carved it's name into the foundation throughout the years. It reminded her of exactly how insignificant we, as people, are in the never ending cycle of nature.

Finding a sandy alcove well tucked away, she pulled the kayak ashore. A small bundle of sage fell out of her cross-body bag. She smiled. Lighting the dried leaves, she made a circle of smoke around her head. She closed her eyes, inhaling the tangy scent, allowing each breath to resonate in her soul, cleansing her spirit. She could see her path forming before her. Now she was ready to follow it, to assume the role of guide for Clear. It was the role that she had been created for. It was the path that was written for her in The Clear Angel Chronicles.

Heidi Angell, bibliophile, lexicomaniac and wordsmith, is the author of the paranormal detective series The Clear Angel Chronicles and has graciously agreed to answer a few questions.

Carol Ann: What genre would you say the book falls into?

Heidi: The series is marketed as a paranormal detective thriller, but I have had reviewers refer to it as a paranormal romance, a detective thriller with paranormal elements, a paranormal thriller, a procedural with paranormal elements, and a whodunit. All of those elements feature prominently in the stories and depending on where the reader is coming from, determines how they describe the series.

Carol Ann: Are there any trigger warnings and/or explicit content readers should know about?

Heidi: Yes, although I would say that the content is no more graphic than Law and Order. There is murder (though we do not see the murders, we do see the aftermath in detail. For the human murders there is very little mess, but there are pet murders that make a lot of readers cry.) There is also a romantic scene at the end that though not explicit, is pretty evident of what happened.

Carol Ann: Who is your favourite character in the book and why?

Heidi: Goodness, this is difficult. As much as I love Clear and Grant, I would have to say that Dr. Anne Hutchins is my favorite. She is just so stalwart and always willing to be the person that others need her to be.

She is very much a chameleon. To her patients she is kind and soothing, to Grant she is tough and determined. She teases and torments the sheriff. For Clear she is the best friend, scientist, supporter, and coach. A very versatile character.

"As Clear prepared the drinks, she was once again grateful for Anne’s tutelage. Six months ago she had known almost nothing of wines and liquors. Anne had instructed her thoroughly in the finer points of entertaining in her preparation to front the ranch." Angel's Dance pg 2.

Carol Ann: If your character was allowed one chance to say anything to your readers, what would he/she say?

Heidi: "Life isn't as hard as a lot of people make it out to be. Love yourself. Love those near you. Everything else will work itself out. Also, if Grant hurts Clear, you know I'm the one who killed him."

Carol Ann: If your character could donate to any charity, which one would he/she choose?

Heidi: She can only choose one? I could see her donating to Doctors without Borders and Operation Smile (time and money).

Carol Ann: Have you written any other books?

Heidi: I have also written an urban fantasy series, The Hunters The Hunters, and the first in a four part YA contemporary fiction series, The Hell School Series. Hell School: Fresh Meat, based on my experience being stalked in high school.

Carol Ann: Do you have any special mentions? (Editor, cover art etc...)

Heidi: A huge thank you to my editors Wendy Sampson and Megan Elliott. They are both amazing and wonderful women!

Carol Ann: What is next for you? Anything in the works?

Heidi: I am participating in Camp Nano and wrapping up the sequel in The Hunters series, The Hunted, which is due out this summer.

Author Interview - R. J. Davies Mornix

The normal hustle and bustle of the big city seemed far away. The beginnings of a dawn on the horizon kissed the dark skies. A breeze cooled the sweat trickling down her face. Being in a fit condition wasn't good enough. She needed to be better ... stronger, and so she ran. While most of the world still hid their heads in their pillows, this is where you could find Dice Maddox Private Investigator. That is if she ran off the pages of R.J. Davies Mornix's book, Maddox Files: Back to Business.

I had the privilege of interviewing my fellow Canadian author this past week. Growing up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, R. J. Davies Mornix has always been an avid Science Fiction and Fantasy fan. Even at the tender age of eight, she dreamed of becoming a published author.

Maddox Files takes place in Toronto, Ontario, the place where she met her husband Dave Mornix, who also doubles as president of her fan club. His support has been monumental in Rhonda's Journey to fulfilling her dreams.

Along with her husband, two sons, Davey and Denziel, and their two cats, Rhonda returned to her roots, making Sault Ste. Marie her residence. Now, a normal day consists of writing plots, conversations, and scenes in ratty notebooks, napkins, and slips of torn-up, coffee-stained envelopes.

When asked why she writes, her answer is, "It's a need, really, like breathing ... I have to do it."

You can find her novel, Maddox Files: Back to Business at the following locations:

Amazon.ca Amazon.com Barnes & Noble Chapters/Indigo/Coles Kobo Balboa Press

“A 26 year old Dice Maddox living in Toronto, Ontario struggles with her failing love life and a career she doesn't love deciding to get back into a business she was once good at. Ryan Winters her first client was a confirmed bachelor until he had a small car accident, a woman named Lily Winters claims to have been married to him for 6 months. Digging deeper into Lily Winters, Dice soon discovers that she isn't who she says she is but wait what is she? A demon? An alien? Will Dice Maddox first case back be her last?”

Carol Ann: Are there any trigger warnings and/or explicit content I should know about?

R. J. Davies Mornix: No nothing explicit a character may swear once of twice in the book but that is the extent of it.

Carol Ann: What genre would you say the book falls into?

R. J. Davies Mornix: Private Investigation/Science Fiction
There are some side plots for the series itself. Someone thought it fell into the Romance Science Fiction category I almost fell over when I heard that. I would not consider myself a Romance writer in any measures. I love people and I love telling stories about people and Dice Maddox has her stories that need to be told. I would say it falls into the Private Investigation Fiction or Science Fiction spectrum.

Carol Ann: Who is your favourite character in the book and why?

R. J. Davies Mornix: Dice Maddox Private Investigator, because she reminds me of me when I was her age. There are definitely differences but we have some core values that are similar. Her parents died when she was five in a car accident. Dice was raised by, her aunt Sophie who wasn’t the maternal type. Leaving Dice to become very independent at a young age. I was very independent at a young age but my circumstances were very different. I grew up in a single parent home and I was the oldest of three. When I was in my twenties I never planned on having kids or settling down. I met my husband at 29. I think she finds herself in Book One.

Carol Ann: Please describe him/her/they a) physically b) their personality.

R. J. Davies Mornix: She is stronger than she realizes, she has a good heart and she is very loyal. She gets to a point where she dances around what she wants but knows what she doesn’t want. Taking a step in the direction of owning her own business and getting into what she loves most helps revitalizes her. She is physically fit but she runs every morning. Her personality determined, wants to find the truth. She has a soft spot for those she lets in her life. Her ex-fiancé cheated on her twice but she still talks to him and they are friends. She wants him to be happy too. She loves a good adventure when chasing after the truth for a client. Fearless.

Carol Ann: Are there any quotes from your book that capture the essence of Dice Maddox's personality?

R. J. Davies Mornix:
“So what are you celebrating?” he asked gently.
“Got rid of my boyfriend, a job I didn’t like and opening my own business,” she smiled proudly.
“Sounds like someone has been busy kiddo,” his words sounded like he was purring, soft and inviting.
She looked at him and smiled, “kiddo? What am I five?”

“I wished I didn’t have this morning meeting or I would join you,” Mr. Larke was standing behind her. She felt her insides dance around.
Skip your meeting a little voice in the back of her mind sang in a little singsong voice. He stood behind her. She closed her eyes, inhaled the crisp cool air … opened her eyes and shoved the thoughts of wondering how Sean Larke would look dipped in chocolate … just chocolate and nothing else.
Thank God people didn’t come with thought bubbles over their heads, she would never be allowed to leave home.

“Well thank you for that very chauvinistic point of view. Because I have a vagina I should be at home and pregnant? You know they had a little movement not too long ago that allows women out of the house for a few hours a day.” She glared at him.

Carol Ann: Do you have any upcoming events you would like your readers to know about?

R. J. Davies Mornix:Book Signing Party in Sault Ste. Marie at the end of April

Carol Ann: What is next for you? Do you have anything in the works?

R. J. Davies Mornix: This is book one of so far a 7 book series there could be more
The first four are already written. The others are outlined.
Book two will be out before Christmas this year.
Book Two- Maddox Files: Blurred Lines
Book Three – Maddox Files: Down the Rabbit Hole
Book Four – Maddox Files: The Watchers
Book Five - Maddox Files: The Light Snuffer

Carol Ann: Is there anyone else who contributed to the book you would lie to mention?

R. J. Davies Mornix: Editors were Jane Omollo and Diane Davies
Cover Design and logo Pennina-Lynn Cobb of Penny C. Designs
My book trailer was created by Dave Mornix of DAM Insights and the music written by my youngest son Denziel Mornix (Denziel the Best) and performed by Denziel and his brother Dave Mornix Jr.

Looks like we are out of time. Thank you Rhonda for visiting with us today! Readers can follow R.J Davies Mornix via social media.

A Haunted Giveaway

It's been a few days since my meeting with Charles Bizarro. I'm not sure even now that it has fully sunken in what transpired that evening. Let's face it, it was more like a scene from a horror flick than a business engagement. Never-the-less, I have no desire to get on his bad side. Better safe than sorry is a good motto, especially, in this case. That leaves me with a giveaway to create. Well, actually two giveaways. Here goes nothing;

THE PRIZES

Here is what I am being offered by Bizarro to give away.

Codes to his ticket site that when inputted will give you two (2) tickets to Bizarro's Factory of Fear located in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. You can pick from all dates they are open in the 2016 season. Value per prize is a maximum of $30.00.

Grand Prize

VIP pass for the winner plus ten (10) friends (that's 11 tickets altogether) for a special haunted evening to take place on any evening the Haunt is not regularly scheduled to be open. Sorry it cannot be on Halloween. You will need to book the date as soon as possible (by September 29th at the latest).

Here's what you get:

entrance to the haunt and all attractions.
A spfx makeup demo
A private ghost tour of the property (I have been informed of multiple deaths have occurred throughout the history of the property)
A campfire with spooky stories (hot chocolate and smores included)

These VIP Passes are valued at $1,000.00 each.

Prizes are awarded “as is” and have no cash value. If you win 'em you use 'em or you don't! That is your choice!

For the month of March a maximum of three (3) prizes that will be drawn. Draws will take place once per week from March 18 to the last week of September 2016. There will be one Grand Prize (VIP Pass) draw that will occur on a date in September 2016 to be announced. Ballots from events (as mentioned below) that do not have a dedicated VIP draw will be added to the Social Media VIP draw.

There will be multiple ways to enter. Individuals can enter as many times as they wish. All entries received will be valid for all draws that occur after the date entered, including the grand prize draw. I will randomly post on my social media ways for individuals to have their name entered during the contest duration. Ways to enter may be posted on any form of social media including the forums of the portal prophecy website and my ask the author group on goodreads. It is up to individuals to find the information on ways to enter themselves.

Announcement of all winners will be made via youtube video. Several draws may be combined into one video. Announcements of video release dates and postings will be made on facebook and twitter. All winning codes will be delivered via facebook or email. It is your responsibility to provide a form of contact for this.

CHARLES BIZARRO EVENT GIVEAWAY

As this suggests, Charles Bizarro will be present at events and doing his own giveaway. This is completely separate from my social media giveaway. The prizes are the same, however there will be at least three (3) VIP Passes between all events the Portal Prophecies attends between March and September 2016.

One will be drawn from entries received at Toronto Comiccon
One will be drawn from entries received at Niagara Falls Comiccon
One will be drawn from entries received at Word on the Street Toronto.
The ballots from all other events which take place before October 1, 2016, will be added to the social media draw for the VIP Pass.

Charles Bizarro, at his sole discretion, may choose to add more VIP draws if he sees fit, depending on the number of entries received.

There will be a minimum of five (5) draws each for a code that is good for two (2) tickets to the haunt in the 2016 season per event.

Draws will occur during the two weeks following each event. All draws, including the combined event and social media draw for a VIP pass will take place no later than September 27, 2016 (the final draw). No entries will be accepted after that draw has been made.

The Meeting

The drive to the old flea market wasn't normally bad. It's located on a rural part of Dundas Street in Hamilton, Ontario, that, at this time of night was almost completely abandoned. Of course, the weather tonight wasn't particularly helpful. Yesterday it snowed heavily. Today, the temperatures rose significantly above the freezing mark. That had been the theme for most of this past winter. The result this evening, however, was a fog thick enough to leave a liquid residue on the windshield just messy enough to require the wipers to run on a low speed.

I was close now. It's probably a good thing that there isn't a lot of traffic this evening. The entrance way to the flea market wasn't well lit and even in the best of conditions could be a little tricky to find, if you didn't know exactly where it was. A GPS helped in that regard. A woman's voice came on, “Your destination is on the right.” I made my jeep slow to a crawl. My head jutted forward over the steering wheel. I need better vision. I narrowed my eyes to a squint under the strain of trying to find where to turn.

Aha! I found it. I had been there many times before of course, but, the long unpaved lane still reminded me more of something you would find leading to an old farm rather than a business. That, of course, was part of the charm of this flea market, at least during the day.

The parking lot was somewhat of a rectangular shape surrounded by different buildings. Each one housed the wares of vendors who were present only for daytime Sunday shoppers. The only light on at the moment was one mounted atop a tall pole.
The fog inside the lot was different. It stuck low to the ground unlike the mist that engulfed my jeep on the road. A chuckle escaped my throat surprising even me. It was more of a nervous reaction than a laugh. As a writer, my mind tends to wander to the outer limits of the imagination. It didn't take much for me to envision the dense mist on the road being one of four walls forming a barrier around the property. The question ringing through my head was, 'Is it there to keep people out or someone in?' I fumbled for a notebook and pencil in my bag. This is good stuff I need to remember.

“Darn.” My shoes hit the ground splashing slush all over the bottom of my pants. The fog clung to me about half way up my calves and anywhere there was a puddle was bound to be hidden. There were probably a few pot holes that needed to be fixed as well. Considering the up and down temperatures the past three months had brought, it was to be expected. There was no choice. I would have to stumble my way to under the light and wait for him to arrive.

The air wasn't so much cold as it was crisp this evening. That added to the already eerie atmosphere. Above the light post, the a full moon glared down at me, but at the same time gave off very little light. As a child, I always loved staring up at the sky at night. Finding shapes in the stars was a fun way to pass the end of a summer day. This evening, however, there seemed to be an absence of stars. Just the moon was staring back at me. If the man in the moon did exist, he, at that moment, reared his face. I swear I saw one eye wink at me.

The trance of the moon's power vanished, replaced by something more unsettling. A howl cut through the silence. It was close. How close, I don't know, but too close for comfort. And, it isn't stopping. At first, I was almost convinced it was an animal, perhaps a dog, a wolf or a coyote. But no, it isn't quite any of those sounds. There was almost a human quality to it, as if a man was being tortured but couldn't form words from the pain. That must be my writer's imagination again. At least, that's what I am telling myself. Another sound. This one, I know. It's a chainsaw. First firing up and then cutting through something. Who would be out on a night such as this cutting wood? The other noise, the one of a living creature, faded away. It simply ceased as if it hadn't existed at all. What could have caused its silence?
Goosebumps began popping up on my arms at the base of tiny hairs, that, were now standing straight up at attention as if awaiting something sinister to happen. They didn't wait long. The light above me began flickering before extinguishing altogether.

“Great! Just what I needed.” My hand dove into my bag, pulling out my phone. Anyone who knows me also knows technology is not, has never been and never will be my strong point. I'm not sure how long exactly it took, but I am positive It took several minutes of fumbling around with buttons, to make the flashlight work.

I let out a sigh shining the light right into his face. My body flew up what, I imagine, was at least two feet from the ground. Of course, it was just my luck, I hit another puddle of cold messy slush on the way back down.
“Careful,” he said. “I wouldn't want you to have an accident.” His voice seemed to linger on accident just a little too long.

“Charles Bizarro?” I already knew the answer to that. I had, after all, spent my weekends in October last year at his haunt signing books when it was open. Of course, my memories of him were all from a distance. Up close and personal was very different.

“In the flesh.”

Something about that answer left me with an uneasy feeling. I wish I could put a finger on exactly what it was. Reflections of the moon against his pure black eyes stole my thoughts away as I stood there. I must need glasses. There are no white parts to his eyes, just black. Contacts! That had to be it. He was after all a performer, although, I'm not quite sure why he needs them on a night like this. I guess I should be flattered he took the time.
A chainsaw fired up again in the background.

“Perhaps.” The word was still dripping from his lips as a coy smile crept across his mouth just wide enough to expose some sharp teeth. “We should head into my office.”

Following him was about the only choice I had right now. The sight of those teeth stuck in my brain like gum to the bottom of a classroom chair. Fake! They had to be part of his costume.

“Here we are! Right up these steps and make yourself at home.”

At home! I let out a fake cough covering up a nervous giggle. I could feel the heat building in my cheeks. He must have noticed. Thank goodness the lighting inside was all different colours, especially the reds.

“I extend an apology. The air in here can get ... a bit stale.”

“Mmmm.” I have no idea how to reply to that. Not to mention, I am now walking through a trailer filled with the most absurd items I have ever seen. A shrunken head! Wow that's a squirrel moment.

“It's my museum of oddities, normally an attraction for the haunt. When we are closed it doubles as my office. Oh, and I wouldn't touch that if I were you.”

Okay, so he must have eyes in the back of his head as well. He never turned around, but, still knew what I was doing. Great! I could be defiant and take my time catching up to him. I wonder if that would anger him. I suppose finding out why he called me here is a better idea.

Mr. Bizzaro was already sitting down at ... wait ... “Is that a coffin? You use a coffin for a desk?” This guy is beyond Bizzaro.

“Actually, I sleep in it.”

“You sleep in it? Really?” I like spooky stuff as much as the next girl, but you wouldn't catch me sleeping in a coffin. That's just wrong.

“It's quite comfortable. Would you like to try lying down?”

“I'll wait till I'm dead, thanks.” I regret saying that already. I hope he doesn't take that as an invitation to murder. There goes that over achieving imagination again. Grab a grip girl. He's just a business man with an unusual business. “You didn't call me here to discuss your furniture I take it.”

“No, of course not. I want to discuss our contract.”

“Our contract?” Yikes my voice cracked. “You mean from last year?”

“Last year. This year. Next year. Time is irrelevant to such matters.”

“Actually, it isn't. We are dealing with a document that has time specific terms.” I really hope he doesn't take that the wrong way. “I brought a copy of it just in case we needed it.”

“Pull it out then! Read the fine print.”

“It's right here. As you can see, there is no fine print Mr. Bizarro.”

“It's Charles. Formalities have never been my strong suit. As long as I have lived they seem far too impersonal for my taste.”

As long as he has lived? He can't be more than mid twenties. Although the greyish tone to his skin might indicate something different. That has to be the lighting though.

“Look again.”

Just humour him and put on a big smile. My hand shook. Tiny words were forming at the bottom of my contract before my eyes. “That wasn't there before! The words are too small to read.”

One blink and the paper was gone from my still trembling hands. There it was held tightly in Charles' grasp now ... My contract. He has it and now he is crumpling it up int a ball. Great.

“No worries. I can tell you what it says.”

“Huh.” Great response. That's the best I can come up with? My contract is flying through the air towards a garbage can and all I can say is, 'huh'. Oh, even better it burst into flames. Wait, how did he do that?

“Basically, it says I have the right to keep you on for another year. Use you for a bit of promotion. Lurk around at a few events ... yadda yadda yadda.”

Yadda, yadda, yadda? Who says that anymore?

“Here take this.”

A piece of paper. Wonderful. Maybe it's a new contract or worse, perhaps a my own will and burial instructions.

“Relax muffin, it won't hurt you. Well unless you are prone to paper cuts.”

I am not sure what sort of laugh that is coming from this guy, but it doesn't sound funny at all. Oh well, what's the harm in reading whatever it says? “Codes? Please tell me that these aren't launch codes and you want me to blow up a bunch of people.”

“Ha. Now what good would that do me. I want some fresh meat to come through the haunt. Generally, that means they need to be alive when they arrive.”

“So what are they?” I probably should have run rather than asking. Too late now.

“They are codes to my ticket site. I want you to give away some tickets as promotional gifts to your readers.”

Wow guess I have been way off base. I never saw that coming. “Why me?”

“Writers hold a special place inside me. You are the ones who create the monsters. That's why I have you at the haunt with your books. The only thing better than a writer, is a reader. They are the ones who breath life into the things that go bump in the night. They can take a single scenario and make it more terrifying than it already was. Take, for instance, you and your friends are watching a horror movie. Something makes one girl scream. What happens to the rest of you? You all jump and scream too. Your one friend multiplied the original effect. That's what I need. That's what you are going to provide for me.”

“You want me to scream?” I can of course scream but I'm no Jamie Lee Curtis. Shouldn't he be looking for a professional screamer?

“No. Well you can if you want to, but that isn't what I am aiming for. I want your readers to come and let their imagination run wild. Where you want to document and write about everything you experience, your fans want to live it.”

Oh look at that I have a notepad and pencil again. Guess he might be right about writers. “Okay so each of these codes are for free tickets to your haunt.”

“Now you have the idea muffin. I knew you wouldn't let me down.”

Right. Glad he has faith in me. “You want me to make up promotions and give them away. Something maybe on facebook or twitter?”

“Excellent idea!”

One thing I can say is that Charles definitely had his drama classes down to an art. I might have to duck if his arms flail about any closer to me. Talk about eccentric. The clothes he is wearing just makes it worse. Something from a cheesy vampire book, set in the eighteen hundreds, complete with ruffles and stains.

“I assume you want to be a part of the process?” Of course he did. He was too flamboyant not to want attention of any kind.

“Brilliant idea!”

I wonder if he's clapping his hands for my idea or himself. I guess it doesn't matter. He seems happy and nothing creepy has happened in the last five minutes. “Perhaps on YouTube, I can have you do live draws weekly or biweekly from all the names entered. That way you can announce to the world the lucky recipients of your generosity.”

“YES! Who knows we could offer a little sneak peak into the world of Charles Bizzaro as well.”

“Okay. You are leaving the detail of the social media promotions to me so I can write up whatever I want for the giveaway?”

“The weekly giveaways are yours to play with. In addition to those, I will also being giving away tickets on my own at your events. You can promote that however you see fit. But wherever you go this year I will be lurking as well. Anyone can visit with me and fill in a ballot for daily draws anywhere you make an appearance. I might even scare up some business for you!”

Way to wait for an invitation. Oh well, I suppose he is an attraction. “You'll be at the comic cons, meet and greets, word on the street, everywhere?”

“Everywhere! We are going to be spending a lot of time together.”

At least it will be in the daylight. “And how many draws will you make?”

“As many as I feel like. Let's say at least five per day but no more than ten. Each will be good for two free tickets. The winners, when they enter their lucky codes, can pick the day from any we are open in the 2016 season. Then the standard fine print garbage. Prizes are as awarded and have no cash value. You provide your own transportation to and from the haunt. We aren't responsible for loss of limb, decapitation or death, yadda yadda yadda. All information can be found on my website, http://www.bizarroshaunt.com or https://www.facebook.com/bizarrosfact...

Again with the 'yadda yadda yadda.' I can't believe the crypt keeper has social media. I guess everyone does now-a-days. “Wait! Loss of limb, decapitation or death?” That hit me like a tonne of bricks.

“Strictly for insurance purposes muffin. Don't get all emotional.”

Insurance. Of course. I guess that makes sense. A haunted house would need to cover their butts with an insurance policy. People have, after all, died from being afraid.

“So, do we have a deal?” His hand locked with mine in a firm shake.

“Yeah, I guess we do.” Yuck. I hadn't noticed his nails until now. They have to be two inches long, slightly curled and razor sharp. I have never seen that putrid a shade of yellow before mixed with some black and reddish tones. If I was writing a book I would describe them as having a colour of being stained as a result of having handled meat and blood for years without gloves.

I wonder, did I just make a deal with the devil? This was definitely going to be one of the more unusual years in my writing career. I will have to be sure to make as many notes as possible. It could end up being a fascinating addition to my memoirs down the road.
