I don't have any other Dickens retellings planned just yet, but I'm not ruling anything out. Another character I've always thought would be great fun to write about is Madame Defarge: something's going on there, and I'd love to know what.(less)

Lots of things changed between drafts for this book, but the ending note stayed more or less the same. I really wanted to leave these characters with both disappointment and hope: even if we don't get everything we want in the moment, it doesn't mean we give up entirely. I think I needed that feeling as much as Felix, Marya, and Sasha did!(less)

“Men and women pass by in the street, shadows that avert their gaze and adjust their paths. Maybe they don’t hear him. Maybe they do. Just as his survival depends on hiding his tears until it’s safe to drop them, maybe theirs depends on not taking any grief that isn’t their responsibility. Children have been orphaned before today. More will be orphaned tomorrow. It’s only to him that the pain feels unprecedented.”
Allison Epstein, Fagin the Thief

“She’s not particularly good as an artist, but the drawings give her pleasure in an otherwise dull life, and he doesn’t know what else art is supposed to achieve beyond that.”
Allison Epstein, Fagin the Thief
