Which World Do You Belong To?

The thing I took away was that for some people there exists two worlds.

Another big part of last week (for us) was Halloween. We had a friend staying with us and we celebrated not once, but twice. I got married!

Thank You!

Hello my darlings!

I know I went down for like, a week. It has been kind of insane – and a lot of things have changed that I need to update you on. But for now – I wanted to give EVERYONE who has re-blogged my last post or who has in any way helped me promote The Hollow Living a giant “THANK YOU”! You are all amazing! I know it is late (its intended release was like, last Friday), but I PROMISE I am getting back in the saddle and I am going to release it soon! The Bitch King is also underway in its construction. REVIEW: Shadow of the Rose (Adversarius, book #1)

I had great difficulty getting into this story. As an avid fantasy reader, my attention is not that difficult to grasp. However, I found my interest in this book waning soon after the first page. The presence of fantasy tropes became quickly overwhelming. The writing was bland and choppy, the action was not thrilling, and the plot was vague. About 1/3rd of the way through the story I found little things were beginning to grate on my nerves, such as the typical fantasy name construction (multi-syllable with too many vowels), and the distracting use of dialect. The characters themselves were not much to write home about.

I think what really pushed me over the edge were the characters such as “Black Rose” and “Nightshadow”. They serve as a perfect indication of how unimaginative this world is.

I feel as though the writer has potential. If more time were spent on character development it could do a world of good for this story. If I could make one recommendation to the author, it would be to work on world and character building. Fleshing out your character’s voices is imperative to constructing a riveting tale.

I do not usually like to dole out such heavy criticism, but I honestly could not bring myself to enjoy this book. I really did try. But I never managed to become fully immersed in its world, which felt more like I was dabbling in a college D&D session. Actually, if I could compare this book to anything, it would be the Zarryiostrom series by Steven Plagman. Cliché and unimpressive.

Book Review: The Dragon's Disciples

A Quick Look Into “Cherry”

It was silent on the way home. Neil didn’t like quiet drives, but the car radio was busted and Cherry wasn’t being talkative today. Usually she would be chattering about her latest macaroni masterpiece or who stole her crayons. Her crayons were stolen pretty often. Neil had a hunch that she was just ditching them as soon as they lost the points.

Home was fifteen minutes away. He had to come up with some way to fill up the void.

“So, Cherry Berry,” he said, tossing her an easy smile. “I don’t feel like cooking tonight. How about a little McDonald’s?” as soon as he said it, he cringed inwardly. “You know, because they have…milk and apple slices and stuff.” He was a terrible father.

“No, thanks,” Cherry sighed.

“Oh?” Neil was relieved. For a minute all he could picture were those shiny, terrifying nails clacking together in disapproval. “Then what are you up for? We can go anywhere you want.”

“I think I just wanna go home,” she said, picking at the flaking fake leather on her door handle.

“Are you sure?” he prodded, hoping to get something out of her. “You’ve been acting kind of downy-dumps, kiddo, are you sure nothing is wrong?”

Cherry slumped in her seat. “I don’t want to eat dinner.”

“No?” Neil stole a moment to look at her. “Why not? It’s five o’ clock already. Usually you like a little something by now.”

“I don’t want to eat anymore,” she said, decidedly.

“Are you sick?” he asked.

She shook her head.

“Are you not hungry?” he guessed again.

“Emmy Clarkson called me fat,” she muttered.

Neil’s mouth fell open. Women were catty twits, even in preschool.

“Wait, wait.” He said. “Emmy called you fat?”

Cherry nodded, looking away.

“The same Emmy who got in trouble for eating Twinkies in class?”

“She said I looked like a big fat monkey,” Cherry sniffled.

“She probably just said that to make herself feel better, Cherry Berry,” Neil said, insulted on behalf of his daughter. “Next time she says something like that to you, just tell her she looks like Kirstie Alley plus a doughnut. Then pack up your chips and go home.”

“Huh?” Cherry looked up at him, confused. Neil sighed.

“Never mind, kiddo. If she calls you a monkey again, you march right over to the phone and call your daddy. I know how to take care of these things.”

“Yeah?” Cherry brightened a little. “Will you tell her that’s she’s fatter than a big fat monkey? You could tell her she’s fatter than a whale!”

“Probably, that sounds like me,” Neil couldn’t help but smile a little.

Tell us a little bit about your cover art. Who designed it? Why did you go with that particular image/artwork?

The cover art for the series was actually done by Alexander K. (or alexowo, this is their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/alexowo/info) I fell in love with their artwork and immediately asked after a commission. I feel like the dark fairytale look captures the essence of Dragoloth perfectly.
