Two New Videos

This week I've posted two new videos titled 'Speech Therapy Gone Wild' (a bit dramatic, but what can I say?) and 'Flap, Flap, Cheese'. I hope you enjoy them!

If there's every anything you want to hear about or see, please let me know and I'll do what I can to accommodate.

Have fun!

Well-rounded children's books

Obviously, lots of things go into helping children become well-rounded adults, but one thing I'd like to think about here is picture books and even higher level books that feature a variety of ethnicities and cultures. I work hard to find at least one or two library books every week that feature non-white children or children from other countries (it can be harder than you might think). My hope is that this will help Trooper have an easier time not seeing himself as secondary when he gets older. (Studies have been done that show even non-white children show preference to white dolls, etc. Wish I could remember which book that came from.) There are better ways to do this than by reading books, but moving to China or Nigeria isn't on the table for us any time soon. So we interact with lots of different people, and we read books. It's not hard to see how these practices would be valuable to children of any background.

So what I'd like from you all is to add to my list of books. I'm going to post a couple that we have around the house at the moment, but if you can think of any please leave the title for the rest of us in a comment. I'll create a new page under the 'books' heading for anyone who wants to reference them later, and we can continue to add to that list indefinitely.

1. 'I Lost My Dad' by Taro Gomi. Cute story set in modern day Japan.

2. 'Old Mikamba Had a Farm' by Rachel Isadora. African Old MacDonald.

3. 'Same, Same but Different' by Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw. Parallels life in USA and India.

4. 'Big Words for Little People' by Jamie Lee Curtis. Features an interracial family.

5. 'It's Okay to Be Different' by Todd Parr. About all kinds of differences.

6. 'Creation, (My Father Loves Me) by J.D Wise. African creation story.

7. 'Don't Play Music Next to the Zoo' by John Lithgow. The child's parents don't 'match'.

Please share if you have any, and remember, they don't have to be non-white, they could be in another country and we could learn something about their culture.

...You might be the mother of a three-year-old.

Have you ever been scrubbing down the tub before a visit from your mother-in-law, only to realize that you haven't done it since the last time she visited? Then you might be the mother of a three-year-old.

Have you ever seen your child disappear through the front door, only to hear yourself shouting, "Come back in here! You know you're not allowed outside with no pants on!" ? Then you might be the mother of a three-year-old.

If hearing the tune 'Old MacDonald Had a Farm' makes you get down with your bad self, you might be the mother of a three-year-old.

Celebrating my 35th birthday

Today I celebrated my 35th birthday, and it was lovely. My husband, Jonathan, took care of the dishes all day, took us out for sushi, and got me a kindle paper white so we don't have to fight over the older kindle, anymore.

I've posted several new videos, three in the 'chick-cake series' and one of us at Rice, the sushi restaurant here in Dover. All should be good for at least a chuckle, so be sure to check them out.

One of the things we as parents have tried to do is to introduce Trooper to as many different kinds of people, places, and foods as we can. Whether his tastes are a result of exposure or a natural predisposition, I can't say, but he loves seafood, sushi, steak, fufu, vegetables, chicken with bones in, custard pie (almost any kind of pie) and all kinds of things that many kids don't. This is great for him and even better for us.

This afternoon Trooper wanted to make cookies out of dough in the fridge (we bought it as a fund raiser, not really my thing) and I told him to have at it. I turned the oven on for him and he got out all the things he needed--cookie cooling rack, cookie sheet, spoon, cookie dough--and then he proceeded to eat about twice as much dough as he put on the sheet. His dad eventually stepped in to keep things a little more balanced. Trooper's not physically big enough to deal with the oven, yet, so we took care of that part for him, too.

Between a pleasant birthday, putting up this blog, and having a nice visit with family, it's been a pretty great week. Even if it did snow eight inches. I don't care what they said on the radio, it was eight inches.

I added a new funny video, today, 'Snow Day Slide'. Find it in the sub menu 'videos' (I know, I didn't really have to say that) under 'blog'.

My first blog post!

OK, this is my first ever blog post. I should probably make it something profound, something that I'll be proud of for the rest of my life. The problem is that I don't know if it will even work, so why waste the time and creativity? This is a great learning experience, but I'm still in the middle of it, not in the 'been there done that' category, yet. In fact, you'll have to forgive me for the first year or so. I can be a little dense when it comes to these things. For now, enjoy a couple videos and we'll see how it goes!
