Excerpt from The Vet’s Valentine Gift by J.L. CampbellI sat there thinking Dane had a nerve. From what I understood, he'd been a constant source of disappointment to Jade since his separation and divorce from Toni. Considering that, I didn't know why Toni would defend him.
When she came back to the living room, Jade was with her.
One look at her told me she was still unhappy. Her little mouth drooped at the corners and she kept her gaze lowered. She climbed onto the sofa to sit beside me and after a moment I slipped my arm around her shoulder.
Toni sat on her other side and fixed her eyes on the television where the business segment of the news was on air.
Jade poked me in the leg. "Doc, I didn't ask you before, but you got any children?"
"Do you have any children," Toni said.
Jade nodded to acknowledge her and then turned back to me. "Do you have any?"
"I shook my head. I have nieces and nephews though. Does that count?"
"Nah, but if you had a little girl like me, you'd want to see her all the time, right?"
A deep breath was in order, because I was heading into a minefield and had to choose my words so as not to rile Toni any further.
Gently, I plucked Jade's nose. "Of course, if she was as cute as you are."
Jade turned to Toni. "See, I told you he'd make a good daddy."
Toni shot fire at me with her eyes, and my only response was a shrug. I wasn't about to make Jade feel any worse after her argument with her father.
Jade didn't say anything for a bit, but frowned hard at the television. It wasn't long before she poked me in the leg again. "Doc, can I ask you something?"
"You can ask me anything."
Toni sat forward, as if sensing Jade was going to ask a question she wouldn't like, but she stayed quiet. When Jade looked at her, Toni pressed her plump lips together and put on the same expression my mother used years ago to let me know we'd have words later if I did any foolishness.
Shuffling sideways, Jade angled her body toward me. She narrowed her eyes as if to gauge whether or not she should ask what she wanted to know. I guess she was satisfied with whatever she saw because she sat up straighter and looked me square in the face. "Doc, since you don't have a little girl yet, would you like to be my daddy?"

Sure, she didn’t liked Isabel, but then again, neither did anyone else. Isabel had a condescending attitude and a bad reputation. As manager of the antique store, Patina, she had made a lot of enemies.
There is Patina’s assistant manager, the handsome and charming Trent. Isabel was blackmailing him. There is Patina’s owner, the aloof and influential Anthony Thorpe. Isabel was smuggling drugs through his store. And there is the entire drug dealing Cantono family. Isabel had lost a box containing heroin from one of their shipments. That is just to name a few and didn’t even include the stranger who was seen arguing with Isabel just hours before her death.
The police have too many suspects and too many soft alibis. Leah needs to prove to the sexy new chief of police that she had nothing to do with Isabel’s death.

How to Marry Your Wife by Stella Marie Alden - Giveaway

Will the treacherous journey split them asunder forever?

What foul devilry is this? They told her he was dead. After six long years without a word, her knight falls onto his knees and sings poetry. Then he denies their son? Heed this well. She’s no longer an innocent who’ll giggle and tarry on his every word. The sharp edge of her tongue and knife is the only welcome he’ll get. She’ll not marry him. The pain would be too much to bear should he ever leave again.
Her attitude is beyond understanding. What voice did he have? The king commanded and he obeyed. Regardless of her hatred, the Templar knight weds. This time she will travel with him and he will win back her favor. It’s a long road from London to Hadrian’s Wall. Evil deeds weave a plot laced with castles, kidnappings, and missives. Will the treacherous journey split them asunder forever? Mayhap only in heaven will he rekindle the passion they once shared.

Excerpt:One thick lock of bronze hair escaped the mass tied to her head. The length twisted past a full breast, beyond her navel, and just above a thatch of curly hair. There, he’d almost known her. Would she take him back? She’d haunted every one of his dreams, followed him like a wraith from London, to France, to Italy, the Holy Lands, and by God, back again. She would marry him. He’d insist. He cleared his throat and stepped out into the open on the lowest tier of bricks.
Eyes wide, her mouth dropped open, and she screeched. One arm covered both breasts and the other hand went low. “Thomas? Is that you? Haunt me not. Be gone. Damn you.”
He put melody to one of the hundreds of poems he’d composed as his lower appendage swelled for her. “Merry, Merry. So very ever fair-ye.”
“Good heavenly Father above. Now it sings?” She picked up a scrubbing brush lying beside a pile of her clothing. Fire from the hearth reflected red into her stunned eyes. Water sloshed over the edge of the highest pools onto the surface of the one below it. The lower edge of the middle bath did the same in perfect counterpoint.
He took a deep breath, jumped up three stairs, and opened his arms wide. “Nay a ghost, love. I’ve come back for you.”
A small nugget of soap whizzed by and would’ve grazed a cheek had he not stepped aside. She dropped to her knees with what he thought was a prayer, jostled in her belongings, and rose with the vicious edge of a dagger. She hissed and jabbed in his direction. “Nay. Be gone ghost. You can’t be Thomas. They said you were dead.”
“They? Who are they, dearest? There’s only I, your love. I’ve returned.” Three steps more brought him within an arm’s length. He reached forward with palms up.
With her un-daggered hand, she finger-poked him and her gray eyes went wider still. She paled when she hit solid mail under his tunic and for a moment their eyes locked like years ago and he was all but undone.

I grew up in New England, in Vermont and have always enjoyed making up stories. When I was a kid, nothing was sacred. Crayons would fight other crayons for placement in the box. Street lamps, when they lost their bulbs, would cry. Needless to say, I still have an active imagination.
I love traveling. I'm one of those people that all other travelers hate. I lay back, when the plane takes off, and awake when the plane touches down.
I have two grown daughters, one lives in Brooklyn and one in Rome. My husband loves to edit my work, and my two cats jump on my keyboard when I'm not watching. Blame them if you see typos.
Cheers and thanks for reading.

Excerpt:
“I don’t want to hurt anyone,” I said, “but I will if I have to. I got your message. It would be best if you leave.”
The kid had recovered. The swagger was back, but so was the anger. He took a step toward me. I aimed the gun directly at him, praying fervently that I wouldn’t have to use it.
“You heard the lady,” came a voice from the right. “I’ve called the police. I doubt you want to be here when they arrive.”
I breathed a sigh of relief that was quickly followed by panic as Daniel Thompson stepped out from behind the dumpster. The shotgun he held in his hands wasn’t quite steady. I stepped toward him as the two Cantonos whipped around. Once they realized that they now had someone armed on either side, they moved back toward the car. I continued making my way toward Daniel while keeping an eye on the men.
“You think we’re afraid of the police?” Mike said. “How do you think we know about her snooping?”
“Mike!” the man said harshly. “Get in the car.”
“But…”
“Now,” he growled. The look he gave Mike would have made me pee in my pants. Mike didn’t do much better. He paled and quickly walked around to the driver’s side and got in.
The other man watched him before turning back to us. He didn’t seem concerned. He was relaxed and confident. He did have a scowl on his face, but I think it was left over from the look he had given Mike. His expression smoothed out as he studied us.
By now, I had reached Daniel. As the man wasn’t armed as far as I could see, I didn’t aim my gun at him although I keep it in front of me. His eyes traveled down and back up again, and I could tell he noticed. He looked me in the face, and when I raised my chin and looked back, he suddenly grinned. I gasped softly. He was gorgeous, even better looking than Trent. I hadn’t noticed before because I was so scared, but I certainly noticed now. He might be the best-looking man I have ever seen. He was also the scariest. He raised his hand to his head and gave me a small salute. I could hear sirens in the distance. He stared at me a moment longer and then winked. “Night, Ms. Norwood.”

A Separate Heaven by Alex Disanti - Author Interview & $25 Gift Card Giveaway

She dropped the towel and slipped into the warm water that felt like silk on her naked body. Leisurely, she swam back and forth, again and again. This was heaven. It was all heaven. She lay on her back, floating, her eyes closed, replaying in her mind the wedding and all that had happened since.
Finally, she began to tire and, feeling she could sleep again, made one last lap underwater, crawling along the bottom of the pool. As she entered the shallow end, her hands reached for the tiled rim as she emerged, breaking the surface of the water.
Suddenly, something like a steel vise gripped her wrists, jerking her upward, and she was momentarily airborne. Her feet slammed against the concrete, jarring her from head to toe. Now Dominic had her by her shoulders and was shaking her. She knew he was saying something, but she could hear only the roaring in her head. Not six feet from them stood two men with guns. Behind them on the massive walls that surrounded the villa were several more.

Author Interview:
How did you decide on names for your characters? With the Hamilton family I felt that Catherine Paige (Hamilton) sounded classic, elegant and fit the description of the young woman. For her brothers, John, Matthew and Andrew seemed to be fitting of upper class Long Island family names.
The Gianelli family: Dominic Gianelli. Dominic because I like the name and Gianelli because he is Italian. There are many Italian names in the books and I researched those to have a variety of names from which to choose. The head of Gianelli’s security team is Manetti, and then there is Buscliano, whose nickname is “Bus.” The nickname lends itself to this big, powerfully built man, the muscle of the security force.
I picture my characters before I name them so each name fits each character comfortably.
As an example, Dominic’s father is a tall, slim man with a neatly trimmed mustache. The name Xavier came to mind immediately and it works. His mother, also quite tall and with black hair that she wears pulled back into a bun, dresses conservatively. Victoria seemed appropriate for her.
What is your favorite genre to read?Romance, if it isn’t “fluff.” I enjoy drama and want a story line that isn’t always predictable. Books that I enjoy so much that I read them again are To Kill a Mockingbird, The Horse Whisperer, Davita’s Harp.
Do you listen to music when you're writing?Sometimes. It depends on my mood. When I sit down to write I always know what I’m going to write, so a lot of the time I just want quiet.
Do you have any phobias?Heights. I don’t let it stop me from doing whatever I need to do, but heights do bother me. With regard to writing, I go a little overboard trying not to repeat a word too often especially within a paragraph or even on a page if I can help it. A little OCD. I like order.
Tell us a little about your main characters.Twenty year old Catherine Paige Hamilton is the only daughter of an affluent, Long Island family. Until she meets Dominic Gianelli, she has lived her life in accordance with the wishes and rules of others but she has never known a man like him. He becomes her stepping stone from girl to woman. Despite the reservations held by her family, she enters his life, his world, and she never looks back.
Dominic Gianelli, when he meets Paige Hamilton, is forty-seven years old, has never married. An enigma, in that he is recognized internationally in the business world and his accumulated assets are reported to be prodigious, little else is known about him. He is a quiet man with an air of confidence not lost on others. When he enters a room he owns it.
AUTHOR Bio and Links:Alex Disanti lives in the Texas Hill Country. While writing has been a lifelong love for her, A Separate Heaven is her first novel. Early works were mainly poetry and short stories. As A Separate Heaven progressed from thought to paper, friends and family began reading the manuscript. Then, in an effort to test the marketability of the material, she enlisted the aid of what she calls her “test readers.” These readers vary in age, occupation and background. It simply grew from there. Alex’s rich detail brought the characters to life, and the ensuing chapters could not come quickly enough for her readers.

Monday Excerpt
This month all the Monday excerpts will be from Dead in a Dumpster: Leah Norwood Mystery #1. Available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, iBooks, Kobo, Smashwords, and Google.
When Leah Norwood finds the body of Isabel Meeks in the dumpster behind her store, she can’t believe the police consider her a suspect.
Leah loves a good mystery. Can she find the killer before the police arrest her for murder?
Excerpt:
Keith nodded and then looked back at his notes. “She was found about seven fifty p.m. by Ms. Norwood.”
Keith pointed to me, and the man turned his eyes to mine. His gaze swept down my body and back up. He then dismissed me without a second glance before turning back to the rookie. “Has the ME been called?”
Now, I know that I am not the most attractive person in the world. I’m what most people would call average. Average height, average weight, average looks, but being dismissed so completely really pissed me off. I was cold, wet, tired, and quite frankly, still a little queasy. And it had been a really bad day. The two men were in deep conversation about the medical examiner when I interrupted.
“Can I leave now?”
Both of them turned toward me. Keith seemed a little surprised that I was still there. I guess he had forgotten about me. The other man just seemed irritated that I had interrupted him.
“You found the body?” he asked and then continued when I nodded, “We’ll need to ask you some questions.”
Keith had been asking me questions. My nerves were shot and my temper short. I’m not usually such a bitch, but I had enough of standing out in the freezing rain. I probably shouldn’t have mouthed off to a police officer, but I figured my day couldn’t get any worse. I summoned up my inner diva, gave him my most haughty look, and asked in a snooty tone. “And you are?”
He stared at me a minute, his eyes hard and unyielding. He raised his eyebrows just a notch, pulled out a badge, and held it toward me. “Chief of Police Alexander Griggs.”
Well, damn, my day just got worse.
